For decades now the Dafer families have suffered unnecessary police atrocities, the name Dafer attracts police attention and whether they have been part of any crime or not police picks them up subjects them to remands and false confessions. The Dafer were part of the armies before and are know to be a fierce and loyal tribe, past decades have seen them taking up work of guarding the farms and village boundaries. These families are not allowed to stay in the village and hence there Dangas dot the village boundaries. Guarding the boundaries requires them to keep some sticks and earlier they would have some weapon ( which they no longer keep fearing police attention). The instances of police entering the Dangas and taking the Dafer men along and not releasing them are very frequent, this requires the village Sarpanch and other village leaders to go to the police station, give statements and prove innocence. Most of the Dafer families are to a great extent fed up of such behaviour of police. They are looking for alternates but lack of education and deficiency of any other skills are the major roadblocks for them to jump to other alternates of earning livelihood. 
Fakirbhai Dafer stays in Danavada village of Surendranagar’s Muli block. He earns his living by guarding the boundaries, but was determined to find an alternate. He bought a used camel cart, the cart required some maintenance but there was no many to do that. VSSMs Harshadbhai got a sense of this need and recommended VSSM to support Fakirbhai. With the loan of Rs. 10,000 Fakirbhai got his cart repaired.
Fakirbhai no longer works as a boundary guard instead, he ferries sand, manure, grains, fuel wood to the farms. His son Haji also helps him with his work. The earnings are good and life is gradually changing for better…
Fakirbhai has become an inspiration to other families in his Danga, they too are looking for alternates and we are sure with the determination they have change isn’t very far…….

‘ડફેર સમાજે ગુનાહિત ભૂતકાળમાંથી બહાર નીકળવાનો નિર્ધાર કરી લીધો છે’
સુરેન્દ્રનગરના મુળી તાલુકાના દાણાવાડાગામમાં ફકીરભાઈ ડફેર અને એમનો પરિવાર સીમરખોપું કરીને રોજીરોટી મેળવે. વર્ષોથી ડફેર પરિવારો ગામમાં રહે અને સીમરખોપું કરે. કોઈ ગુનામાં એમના નામ નહિ. ના કોઈ સાથે વિવાદ.. છતાં પોલીસનો ભય એમને હંમેશાં રહ્યા કરે. ક્યારેક તો પોલીસ આવીને ‘હથિયાર રાખો છો એમ કહીને ડંગામાંથી કોઈ પુરુષ હાથમાં આવે તો એને લઈ જાય.’ આ સમયે ગામના સરપંચ અને બીજા આગેવાનો સાથે પોલીસ સ્ટેશન જવાનું અને હથિયાર નથી એ સાબિત કરવાનું. આવી માથાકૂટ અવારનવાર થયા જ કરે. પોલીસનો એટલો બધો ભય આ પરિવારો અનુભવે... કંટાળેલા આ પરિવારો તો આ બધામાંથી છૂટવા ક્યારનાય પ્રયન્ત કરે. પણ શિક્ષણ છે નહિ અને બીજા વ્યવસાયની આવડત નથી. આવામાં શું કરવું એ સૌથી મોટો પ્રશ્ન. પણ ફકીરભાઈએ આ બધામાંથી બહાર નીકળવાનો નિર્ધાર કરી દીધેલો એમણે જૂની ઊંટલારી ખરીદી. પણ થોડા સમયમાં ખ્યાલ આવ્યો કે, આમાં કંઈ ધંધો થઇ શકે નહિ. લારીને મરમ્મતની જરૂર હતી. કોણ મદદ કરે? પાસે બચત પણ નહિ. vssmના કાર્યકર હર્ષદને આ બાબતનો ખ્યાલ આવતાં ફકીરભાઈને રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ ની લોન vssmમાંથી આપવાં ભલામણ કરી. લોન મળી અને લારી સરખી થઇ ગઈ.
ફકીરભાઈએ સીમ રખોપું બંધ કરી દીધું. ખેડૂતોના ખેતરમાં ખાતર ભરવાનું, માટી ભરવાનું, અનાજ લાવવાનું, લાકડાં ભરવાનું વગેરે જેવા કામો ફકીરભાઈ અને એમનો દીકરો હાજી કરે છે. સારું કમાય છે. હવે જીવન બદલાયું છે.
ફકીરભાઈના ડંગામાં રહેતાં અન્ય પરિવારો પણ પોતાની રીતે નાના નાના વ્યવસાય માટે વિચારી રહ્યા છે.. ડફેર સમાજે ગુનાહિત ભૂતકાળમાંથી બહાર નીકળવાનો નિર્ધાર કરી લીધો છે... હા વિકલ્પો શોધી રહ્યા છે પણ બધું ગોઠવાશે એ નક્કી છે..
