“We did visit a bank with Kanubhai (VSSM team member) but were appalled by the manner in which they spoke to Rekhaben. The bank official had never met Rekhaben, did not even know her yet, showed no respect in his conversation. You are like a daughter to us Ben, it is so difficult to live as a widow in the society. We do not have this kind of money, to us you and the organization are like our own and hence I am here with these community leaders to ask for your help.”

Khodubhai Kangasiya reached out to us with same right as he would do to somebody his own. Rekhaben Kangasiaya, a resident of Kalawad got married as a child. The marriage was a happy one, the couple sold artificial jewelry and #cosmetics on the streets of their town. Unfortunately, after the birth of their daughter the husband succumbed to a serious illness. Rekhaben was too young, so the family married her to her younger brother-in-law. They both worked hard, had children together and also invested Rs. 10 lacs in a shop to upgrade and carry on their business of artificial jewelry and cosmetics. The money was borrowed on hefty interest from a private money lender. The couple believed in hard work and had confidence that they will be able to repay the amount. They had already paid off half of the amount. Just when everything was seemed upbeat, Rekhaben’s husband infected jaundice which progressed into Hepatitis B. The medical bills for the treatment soared up to 2.5 lacs yet, it could not save Rekhaben’s husband.

After the death of her husband, sustaining the business alone was a challenge for Rekhaben who began finding it difficult to repay the amount. Along with the business she had to sustain her children and mother-in-law. But, she was determined and did not give up hope. Initially, the lender was supportive and asked to pay at gradual pace but, later he began eying on the shop and asked to pay not just the interest but also the original amount.
Five lakhs were not a small amount. Rekhaben did not feel it right to spread her hands before the community which, had already helped her with paying off the medical bills. The community leaders made all possible efforts to manage for a loan of 5 lacs but, things did not workout. Hence, they turned up to VSSM with this special request. VSSM had never met Rekhaben but, Khodubhai, Ravjibhai and other leaders guaranteed the amount.
Why should the entire community worry about the plight of a widow?? On the contrary, they were concerned about her well-being and that is what appealed me the most!! It is such empathy that is holding such communities together We have decided to support Rekhaben from the funds given to VSSM by extremely compassionate Shri. Chandrakantbhai Gogari of Aarti Foundation.
Rekhben participated in the “We also exist” convention and travelled all the way from Kalawad to Palapur. She thanked and blessed everyone who helped put her life back on track.
Am sure she soon will be able to pay off her loan and own the shop pretty soon.

‘બેન તમારે પાંચ લાખની લોન અમારા સમાજની દીકરીને દેવી પડશે.’
‘પાંચ લાખ આ રકમ તો ઘણી મોટી કહેવાય. બેંકમાંથી મળી જશે. સંસ્થા આવડી મોટી લોન ના આપી શકે.’
‘કનુભાઈ (VSSMના કાર્યકર) હારે બેંકના પગથિયાએ ચડી આવ્યા. પણ ન્યાં જે રીતે રેખાબેનની પુછપરછ કરવામાં આવી. એ નો ગમ્યું. બેંકનો ઈ માણહ રેખાબેનને કોઈ દી મળ્યો નોતો ને તોય જાણે વર્ષોથી ઓળખતો હોય એમ સીધો તુ તારીથી વાત શરૃ કરી. વધારે શું કહુ બેન તમેય દીકરી જેવા સો. ખરે જ બેન જુવાન દીકરી ને એય પાસી વિધવાને સમાજમાં જીવવું કાંઈ હેલું નથી. અમારી કને એટલા પૈસા નથી કે ઈને મદદ કરી હકીએ. પણ તમે ને સંસ્થા બેય અમારા એટલે તમને કહેવા મારી નાત સાથે આયા ને તમારે મદદ કરવાની સે.’
પ્રેમપૂર્વક ને પાછા એક જુદા અધિકારભાવથી રાજકોટના ખોડુભાઈ #કાંગસિયા એ અમારી સામે આ વાત મુકી. કાલાવાડામાં રહેતા રેખાબહેન કાંગસિયાના નાનપણમાં લગ્ન થયા. પતિ પત્ની બંને પથારો પાથરીને #શૃંગારપ્રસાધનો વેચે. સુખી દાંપત્યજીવન. એક દીકરી જન્મી. ત્યાં પતિને ગંભીર બિમારી લાગુ પડીને એ આ દુનિયા છોડી ગયો. જુવાન દીકરી આખી જીંદગી રંડોપો વેઠી ના શકે. એટલે દિયરવટુ કરાવ્યું. રેખાબહેનનું ગાડુ ફરીથી ગબડ્યું. પતિ પત્નીએ ખુબ મહેનત કરી. બીજા બાળકો પણ થયા. મહેનતકશ રેખાબહેન અને તેમના પતિએ રૃપિયા દસ લાખમાં કટલરી નો સામાન વેચી શકાય તે માટે દુકાન ખરીદી. હા મોટાભાગના પૈસા વ્યાજવા લઈને જ તો. બાવળાના બળ પર વિશ્વાસ હતો એટલે પૈસા તો ભરાશે જ. ને પાંચ લાખ તો ભરાઈ પણ ગયા. ત્યાં અચાનક રેખાબહેનના પતિને કમળો થયો ને તેમાંથી કમળી. અઢી લાખનો ખર્ચ થયો છતાં તેમના પતિ ના બચ્યા.
હવે દુકાનના હપ્તા ભરવાનું થોડુ મુશ્કેલ હતું છતાં રેખાબહેન હિંમત ના હાર્યા. ઘરમાં સાસુ ને બીજા બાળકોનુંયે પુરુ કરવાનું ને માથે વ્યાજવા પૈસાની ચિંતા તો ખરી જ. શરૃઆતમાં જેમની પાસેથી પૈસા લીધા હતા તેમણે ધીમે ધીમે પૈસા આપજો એમ કહ્યું પણ પછી દુકાન પર નજર બગડી.
‘ખાલી
વ્યાજ ભરે નહીં ચાલે મૂડી પણ ભરો નહીં તો દુકાન વેચી નાખો’ નું પેલા ભાઈએ કહ્યું.
રેખાબહેન મૂંઝાયા. સમાજે પતિની બિમારીમાં ઉઘરાણું કરીને મદદ કરેલી. ફરી પાંચ લાખ માટે સમાજ પાસે હાથ લાંબો કરવાનું ના ગમ્યું. ને કરે તોય પાંચ લાખ એ કાંઈ નાની રકમ નહોતી.
લોન રૃપે મદદ મળે એ માટે રેખાબહેનને સાથે એમના સમાજના આગેવાનો બધે ફરી વળ્યા પણ ક્યાંય મેળ પડ્યો નહીં. સંસ્થા સાથે આ પરિવારો સંકળાયેલા. હા રેખાબહેનને કોઈ વાર મળવાનું થયેલું નહીં પણ ખોડુભાઈ, રવજીભાઈને અન્યોએ ઓફીસ આવીને એમની બાંયેધરી લીધી.
આખી વાતમાં સમાજના આગેવાનો એક વિધવા બહેનની ચિંતા કરે તે વધારે ગમ્યું. બાકી રેખાબહેનનું જે થવાનું હોય એ થાય એની ચિંતા સમાજ શું કામ કરે? ખરે જ નાના સમાજો આ બંધનથી એક બીજા સાથે બંધાયા છે ને એટલે જ એ ટક્યા છે..
આરતી પરિવારના આદરણીય શ્રી ચંદ્રકાન્તભાઈ ગોગરી જેઓ આ પરિવારોને બેઠા કરવા ખુબ મદદ કરે તેમણે આવા પરિવારોને બેઠા કરવા વગર વ્યાજે લોનના રૃપમાં મદદ કરવા જે રકમ આપી હતી તેમાંથી રેખાબહેનને મદદ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.
રેખાબહેન વિચરતી જાતિઓ માટે આયોજીત મહાસંમેલનમાં છેક કાલાવાડથી પાલનપુર આવ્યાને મદદ કરવાવાળા સૌનો આભાર માન્યો ને સૌને ભગવાન સુખી રાખે તેવા આશિર્વાદ આપ્યા.
