Anyone reading this post of our Swavlamban intitative can help us with this intent of ours...

Mittal Patel meets Bajaniya community who is experiencing
debt-free living after taking interest free loan from VSSM

‘Loan you offered helped me set up my business; I saved well and married off my daughter without borrowing a single rupee from a private money lender!’ an elated Govindbhai Bajaniya shared.

Around 25 people in Banaskantha’s Kankrej exchanged/sold fashion accessories and likes against the naturally fallen hair of women. However, they lacked the capital to procure and stock goods in bulk. As a result, they needed to borrow money from private lenders at a very high-interest rate. It means their ability to save money got compromised.

VSSM offered these individuals interest-free loans, enabling them to buy goods wholesale. These men who either walked or cycled to collect hair managed to make good profits from their rejenuvated business, which helped each of them buy a motorbike to help them scale more regions.

Recently, I met these young Bajaniya men. Since the motorbikes also double up as stores, we decided to upgrade the design of the bikes to mobile kiosks to help them showcase their products better and attract more customers.

Anyone reading this post can help us with this intent of ours.

The youth from Patan’s Sirval village also requested for the same, a modified motorbike.

We will help them with efficiently designing a motorbike. VSSM also plans to improvise their goods procurement system. Most of these families buy goods from the local level and pay a higher price for the same. We plan to link them with the Tankshal market in Ahmedabad. It will provide them options to buy the latest products and wholesale rates and make better profits. Our team members Nisha and Amibahen will help them with this nitty-gritty.

Ishwarbhai, our team member in Banaskantha helps identify deserving candidates for interest-free loan initiative. VSSM takes immense pride in its hardworking team at the realm of  various initiatives.

We are glad the families are economically flourishing and experiencing the joys of debt-free living.

Dalpatbhai is a wise man; we wish he soon realizes his dreams...

Dalpatbhai Bharthari came to meet Mittal Patel to show his
Fixed Deposit receipt of Rs 15,000/-

“Ben, look, I have got an FD (fixed deposit) done!”

I was a little amazed listening to the word FD from Dalpatbhai, who has never been to school. Only to realise that this is the doing of our Nisha and Ambien. The duo is in charge of the Swavlamban initiative while Bhargawbhai, Madhubahen, Hiren, Sachin, and Dipen support them. Our team offers unsolicited advice to any loan applicant to cultivate the habit of regular savings.

And not all choose to follow it with dedication and promptness shown by Dalpatbhai.

“Ben, I am a Bharthari from Banaskantha living in Ahmedabad’s Kamod. The Ravanhattha I play doesn’t earn me much. I work hard, but my earnings remain meager. I collect scrap; how much can I carry on my shoulder? In a video shared by you, I saw how the Nathbawa  inn Surendranagar benefited from the paddle rickshaw you gave them; I also want to buy a paddle rickshaw.” Dalpatbhai spoke his mind at our office a few months ago.

Although we were meeting Dalpatbhai for the first time, we know his community well. Hence, we asked him to write an application for the paddle rickshaw. “But I cannot read or write!” he responded, requesting Ambien and Nishaben to write an application. “But I don’t want it free; you loan me the money to buy it!” he added.

Dalpatbhai leads an itinerant life, and it is not sure how long he will remain in Kamod. Therefore, we had our apprehensions about his ability to pay installments regularly.

“Please have faith in me, I don’t want charity. But, I will not let you down; loan me some money!” he requested after our queries.

Dalpatbhai’s intentions were noble, and we loaned him some amount. Within a month, he repaid Rs. 6000, and one day he came to our office to show FD receipt of Rs. 15000. “I want to collect more such receipts because I wish to buy a house.”  Dalpatbhai shared. He has bought separate paddle rickshaws for his wife and son. They, too, work independently and contribute to family income along with regular savings.

“I have to save Rs. 3000 a month if not more; you have taught me how to do it. Had I begun a little early, the amount would have been substantial enough to buy a house. ” Dalpatbhai shared.

Dalpatbhai is a wise man; we wish he soon realizes his dreams.

VSSM learned about the need and gave a handcart to Shantibahen under its tool-kit support program...

Shantibahen and Hasubhai shared their sentiments with Mittal
Patel during their visit to collect the handcart

Shantibahen’s long battle with tuberculosis has taken a heavy toll on her body. The body has lost a lot of muscle and fat weight, and it is tired of fighting all these years. Shantibahen was a vegetable vendor and her husband Hasubhai rode a three-tiered paddle rickshaw. The couple worked hard, and life was good.  But the battle with TB stretched too long; it shattered her physical and mental strength; fight it out, and mental strength is a significant factor in fighting a disease like TB.

Hasubhai continued to boost Shantibahen’s spirits to keep fighting, but it didn’t help much. Hasubhai is wise; he knows work is the only therapy to keep his wife upbeat. He wanted Shantibahen to take up vegetable vending again but lacked the capital to buy a hand cart. VSSM learned about the need and gave a handcart to Shantibahen.

“I want to work and get better soon; I want to be there for my children, who are still small!” Shantibahen shared her sentiments while at our office to collect the handcart

We pray for Shantibahen’s speedy recovery, and a happy and peaceful future. We are also grateful to the generous support of our well-wishing donors who enable us to walk this path.

The Swavlamban Livelihood initiative has been successful in providing support to Prakashbhai to revamp his livelihoods...

Mittal Patel meets Prakashbhai during her visit to Kheda

“I wanted to study all the way to earn lots of money, but my father’s illness compelled me to drop out of school to earn money to meet his medical expenses. But I have not let go of the dream to earn lots of money!” The impoverished life Prakashbhai lives in Kheda’s Dabhaan villages justifies  his dream of earning well,

After working as menial labor for a very long time, Prakashbhai bought a second-hand auto rikshaw. Unfortunately, most of his daily earnings were spent on repairing the pre-owned vehicle. A new rickshaw would at least save him that expense. But he lacked the capital to buy a brand-new vehicle.

When VSSM’s Rajnibhai learned about Prakashbhai’s intention to buy a new rickshaw,  he offered him a loan to pay the down payment. The balance amount was borrowed from a bank. The hard work Prakashbhai put in became worthwhile as he now saved the money he spent on repairs.

After meeting the household expenses, Prakashbhai manages to spare Rs. 10,000 as EMI towards both his loans.

Prakashbhai now intends to buy another auto-rickshaw so that he can rent it to supplement his income. And the ability to work hard and the foresight he possesses will bring him success. Moreover, the discipline with which he repays his loan has convinced us to offer him another loan when required.

The Swavlamban Livelihood initiative has been successful in providing support to 6000 families to revamp their livelihoods. And we are glad this number keeps growing.

We wish Prakashbhai all the very best with his future endeavors.

VSSM's swavlamban initiative helps Mahendrabhai to pay off the loan and restart his business.

Mittal Patel with VSSM's coordinator Rajnibhai meets
Mahendrabhai who took interest free loan from VSSM

"I had borrowed Rs. 15,000 from my employer, but that loan made me his slave," shared Mahendrabhai from Kheda's Dabhan village.

Although Mahendrabhai hasn't studied much, he is very enterprising. He traded plasticware and fashion accessories, but the business collapsed during the pandemic. The extended phase of the pandemic also ate into the family's savings. With no choice left, Mahendrabhai took up a job at a factory and borrowed Rs. 15,000 for household expenses. But the loan became a problem rather than a solution.

The employer had agreed to pay a daily wage of Rs. 300, but at times he would not pay this amount on the pretext of the loan adjustment. Moreover, he was not allowed any leave; if Mahendrabhai took a break, the boss would come to his house and take him along.

Mahendrabhai was tired of his job but could not find a way to escape the debt clutches of the employer. "If someone lends me Rs. 15000, I will leave this job the next moment," he would think

Upon learning about Mahendrabhai's plight, our team member Rajnibhai spoke to us, and we offered him a loan of Rs. 30,000, from which he had to pay off the loan and restart his business.

The employer refused to take the money and let him go. It took lots of effort and pleading for Mahendrabhai to walk out of his enslaving job.

The remaining Rs. 15,000 helped him restart the business. Life is back on track, with saving tricking in. Hope his dream of a pucca house soon becomes a reality.

Employers acting in such a selfish manner is heart-breaking. With the hope that sanity prevails, we pray for the happiness and well-being of everyone.

Mahendrabhai restarted his buisness with the help of VSSM's
swavlamban initiative

Mahendrabhai's life is back on track, with saving tricking in

Sunday 9 October 2022

VSSM's swavlamban's initiative has helped nomadic individuals reinvent their livelihoods....

Mittal Patel with Mansa's Akashbhai and others who
succeeded in breaking from their debt cycle

Ben, I can lead you to numerous individuals in our village who, after borrowing money from private money lenders, continue to pay instalments but cannot manage to pay interest. As a result, they have had to leave the village not to escape the demands of the money lender but make enough money to pay off the debt. They are not shying away from repaying their money; they need more money to pay off the huge interest. I have convinced and brought back two such individuals and got them to restart their vegetable cart." Manasa's Aakashbhai shared these details.

The small vendors trading fruits and vegetables need to purchase goods worth Rs. 5-6 thousand daily. But they do not have that kind of capital; hence, they take loans from private money lenders at hefty interest rates. Moreover, there is a penalty for missed or late instalments. They would even take away vegetables for free.

"No one likes the burden of debt. But, unfortunately, we have no choice but to borrow money at high-interest rates from these private money lenders," shared the young vegetable vendors of Mansa.

We had decided to free 12 such vegetable vendors from keeping an account of their debt and free them from their dairies. The efforts paid off. Not only did the 12 young men succeed in breaking free from the debt cycle, but they also adopted the habit of regular savings.

After they repaid one loan, they took another. Some of them invested in their businesses, while others repaired their homes. Akashbhai and other youth from the Mansa are working towards providing freedom to the individuals burdened under private debt.

We have agreed to help them achieve this goal.

We are grateful for our donors' financial support; this support has helped nomadic individuals reinvent their livelihoods. Even our loanees regularly donate a part of their income to the initiative.

Will to succeed… VSSM helps Bhavesh & Bhavna begin their own venture…

Mittal Patel visits Bhavesh and Bhavna's shop during
her visit tio Sarwal

Bhavesh and Bhavna are young but wise and hardworking beyond their age. Bhavesh practiced the traditional occupation most Bajaniya follow; collecting hair shed during everyday combing. But it required him to wander a lot while he yearned for a settled life that could allow his children to go to school and spare his tired legs.

In the meantime, he happens to speak to VSSM’s Mohanbhai about his struggle to find a solution. Mohanbhai suggested he start a small shop in the heart of the Bajaniya settlement in Patan’s Sarwal village. A neighbourhood shop would benefit both him and the community.

Bhavesh decided to go forward with the idea, he started a shop in one room of his house. VSSM offered him a loan to stock the goods. With time,  Bhavesh learned the tricks of the trade. While the first loan helped set up the business, the second loan enabled Bhaveshbhai to stock more goods. And with the business growing, his wife Bhavnaben too has joined the business. The couple has established their business well, are timely with their EMI payments, and makes a regular donation to the organization.

I had the opportunity to visit the shop during my recent visit to Sarwal.

“What more do you think needs to be added to your business?” I asked.

“I wish nobody from this settlement should experience the need to visit  Harij bazar. Hence, I want to convert this shop into a one-place shopping solution for my community.” Bhavesh replied.

I was impressed by Bhavesh-Bhavna's vision for their venture. Despite having little education, they had clarity and understanding of their work. And they were willing to put in the required hard work. I am sure they will realize their dreams.

VSSM’s Mohanbhai, with his understanding and foresight, plays a vital role in identifying the right individuals and bringing them the necessary support. We wish Bhavesh and Bhavna the very best in life. We are grateful for the help of our well-wishing donors for their unending generosity.

Mittal Patel was impressed by Bhavesh-Bhavna's vision
for their venture

Bhavesh- Bhavna and their son

VSSM extended helped Dashrathbhai procure products for the new venture...

Mittal Patel meets Dashrathbhai

“It was impossible to meet everyone’s aspirations from just one business. Hence, I  had thought of a parallel venture but lacked the capital to start it. But your support changed my financial condition,” shares Dashrathbhai from Kheda’s Aantroli village. Dashrathbhai is skilled at repairing electric goods. He runs a repair shop in his village, but it does not fetch him enough income. It was impossible to meet his aspirations to build a good life couldn’t be completed on this income. Hence, to supplement the income, he contemplated stocking up fashion accessories and other daily needs goods at his shop but lacked the capital to buy these goods.

Dashrathbhai came into contact with VSSM’s Rajnibhai and requested a loan. The interest-free loan of Rs. 30,000  VSSM extended helped him procure products for the new venture.

As the news of his venture spread across the village, business picked up, and his income doubled. He now wishes to have a more extensive shop that stocks a wide range of products. The hard-working individual Dashrathbhai is, I am sure this too will soon become a reality.

The happiness we experience when small support transforms an individual’s life is matchless.

We are grateful to our well-wishers for their continued support and wish Dashrathbhai all the best with his future endeavours.

#MittalPatel #vssm

VSSM's Swavlamban initiative shares positive stories of hundreds of individuals like Mahendrabhai...

Mittal Patel meets Mahendrabhai at his grocery Kiosk

Mahendrabhai lives in Kheda's Antroli village and runs a grocery kiosk in the same village. The income from his business is enough to meet his family's daily needs but does not offer the scope to create capital and expand the business.

Mahendrabhai had been looking at avenues to expand his business but lacked the capital to do so. The interest on loans from private money lenders is atrociously high; he feels it is an option one should never opt for. It is something he has learned from experience, and he is right.

Mahendrabhai contacted VSSM's Rajnibbhai and requested a loan to stock goods he otherwise could not.

We provided a loan of Rs. 30,000. "There is an obvious increase in the income and profit with the products I have stocked up using Rs. 30,000. The profit has doubled. I want to save all that money and start the cattle feed business." Mahendrabhai shared.

VSSM's Swavlamban initiative shares positive stories of hundreds of individuals like Mahendrabhai who have prospered even with a small loan of as less as Rs 10,000.

These interest-free loans have given them the strength to carry on.

The Swavlamban initiative supported 5500 individuals, and we hope for these numbers to keep growing. May it help them grow independent and happy.

VSSM’s interest free loan enables a dignified living to individuals like Lalabhai...

Mittal Patel meets Lalabhai

Every few days, I receive a call from Lalabhai from Dakor. “Ben, how are you doing? Do plan to come to Dakor for Ranchodrai’s darshan,” he would tell me during every call.

Lalabhai is a very hard-working individual. Although his early childhood was spent in a shanty, he had pledged not to let poverty keep him in its clutches. Lalabhai went to school until 10th grade, after which he dropped out.

His mother earned a living through selling fashion accessories, and he, too, had taken up the same trade. The business grew well, and he was required to rent two shops and build a small cabin near the Dakor temple.

The income enabled him to build a pucca house.

Two years back, Lalabhai suffered a heart attack; his treatment at a private hospital washed off all his savings. Usually, Lalabhai stocked his goods on credit from as far as Mumbai. But after the heart attack, his business collapsed, living no capital to buy goods.

After learning about their situation, we loaned him and his son some money. The amount was kept as a deposit at the merchant’s they bought the goods to restart their business. It has been quite a while since we loaned them the money. “Things are back on track,” Lalabhai had called to share.

I had the opportunity to visit his store on my recent trip to Dakor. I was astonished at the volume of goods stored in his shop. The wholesellers had put the same old trust in him; as a result, they had stocked Rs. 10 lac worth of goods. Around 200 vendors buy goods from Lalabhai.

“I now want to work in a way that I become instrumental in the happiness of others.” We hope Lalabhai succeeds and accomplishes his goal.

We are grateful for the support you have extended to Lalabhai. Your support enables us to reach individuals like Lalabhai.

Mittal Patel visits Lalabhai's store

Mittal Patel visits store of Lalabhai on her recent visit to Dakor

Monday 8 August 2022

A handcart was given to Bhanuben with the help of our tool support program ...

Mittal Patel meets Bhanuben

We will give a handcart to Bhanuben and some capital to start a business selling vegetables.

"Who is Bhanuben? What is her age?" I asked obvious questions when one of our team members mentioned the above.

"Bhanuben is here at our office; let us meet her," he responded.

"A very frail-looking lady with an equally frail voice entered my office.

"Do you know the business of selling vegetables?" I asked.

"My husband was a vegetable vendor; I would accompany him sometimes. Hence, I know certain things but will learn on the job, Didi!"

"What work do you do at present?"

"I work as domestic help, but an  income of Rs. 3000 is insufficient to feed my two children and parents-in-law," Bhanuben responded.

"What went wrong with your husband?"

"Cancer. My husband was addicted to gutka masala; he would not listen to any of my pleas to stop eating the gutka. As a result, he was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth. We got him operated on, but the doctor said he would never be cancer free because cancer had spread in the body. My husband heard the doctors say this and committed suicide." Bhanuben was emotional by the time she finished this statement. She would be 27ish years old, and her husband passed away two years ago.

"You re-married?"

"I don't want to marry again. I want to focus on raising my children well and educating them. I want to live for them."

"what difference will a handcart bring to your life?

"It will make a difference, Didi. I don't have money to buy a handcart. If I get into selling vegetables, I will make a decent income. My house is a kuccha one-room house with a leaking roof; my father-in-law remains ill. I question why god has granted me so much pain. I don't have parents, just a sister as a family. Whenever possible, sends Rs. 500-1000. She is my strength and support. But I am tired now; if I had no children to look after, I too would have decided to end my life." Tears rolled down Bhanuben's eyes.

I am astonished by the sheer negligence of people with addictions towards their families.

"Didi, Hirenbhai tells me that you also operate a hostel. I wish to enrol my children into it." The life lessons Bhanuben has learned under her given  circumstances

A handcart was given to Bhanuben while we worked towards getting her a proper house.

"Will God give me happiness?" on her way out, she comes back from the main gate to ask me this.

Women are empowered here since ages...

Kangsiya women makes Mittal Patel to wear Bangels

“Ben, you set up a kiosk to retail fashion accessories. When you are  financially independent you will not require to stretch your hands before your husband.” The women of Kheda’s Sandhana shared this piece of advice with me.

They were 100% correct, and I liked them for their understanding.

Financial independence for women is needed in this time and age. Despite having the required skills, qualifications and understanding many women are unable to step out of their homes because their husbands would not want them to. But, financial independence is for one’s security. In case of an untoward situation, it is financial independence that will allow the women to face the challenges with respect and determination. They would not require to start from scratch. Education and economic independence thus become critical.

“Stretching hands before the husband even for 5 rupees is humiliating at times. If we are earning, we can spend our money wherever we want to...” Bharti tells me.

Women stepping not of the house to make a living might be a recent scenario for many communities, but the kangasiya women have led a financially independent life for generations.

“However our husband would be, we do not go complaining to our parents’, when we have our earnings there is no need to do so. When we are the earning members, do not mind tolerating the  husband!” Gauriben shared a very strong opinion.

While Gauri Ma remarked, “From an early age, we begin to groom our daughters on business skills. As a result, they are better prepared just in case they are faced with any crisis.

The kangasiya women are a truly empowered lot. So ideally,  each woman, whether she is a mother or  mother-in-law should provide space to their daughters and daughters-in law to secure financial independence. It is only then they would be able to face the world with their head held high.

Mittal Patel with Kangsiya women

Kangsiya women tells Mittal Patel that "If we are earning,
we can spend our money wherever we want to.."

Sunday 31 July 2022

VSSM bought hand cart for Rekha Maa under its tool support program...

Mittal Patel meets Rekha Maa

There is a very popular phrase in Gujarati, 'Even the dogs from maternal town are dearer'. Women use it to share the ingrained love for all things associated to their maternal home. Rekha Maa used that phrase when she tightly held my hand.

VSSM's Madhuben and Hiren were working on ration card-related issues in Ramol when Alpesh from the settlement asked them to meet Rekha Maa.

Rekha Maa's husband ran a pakora cart, and it was a flourishing business. The family lived at peace until her husband was alive, as there was a steady flow of income. However, meeting the household expenses became a challenge after he passed away. The couple's only child is differently abled and needs constant medical attention. Rekha Maa took up a job as a utensil cleaner at a hotel. Gradually, as she aged, that became cumbersome because handling restaurant vessels required a lot of energy.

With no options left, she began begging near Ramol toll booth.

Alpesh and other village youth would watch Rekha Maa's plight in dismay. They helped whenever possible, but with unstable economic conditions, they also had limitations. Alpesh felt it would be better if Rekha Maa was given a hand cart through which she could trade seasonal produce. Alpesh did not want her to feel burdened by depending on others for food.

Alpesh shared his thoughts with Madhuben. Consequently, we bought a hand cart for Rekha Maa.

"Ba, where is your maternal home?" I asked Rekha Maa when she was at our office to collect the hand cart.

"Have you seen Tharad in Banaskantha?" Rekha Maa asked.

“Yes, I have also seen Chekhla, Simana, Kakar…” I replied.

"Are you from there, my village?" a gleaning Rekha Maa asks me.

The delight on her face was so bright that I could not say no. Also,  I believe in Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam… that makes this entire earth my maternal home.

I liked the Ba's intent of working to earn a living. Alpesh and others from the settlement accepted the responsibility of bringing goods for Ba and ferrying the cart to and from the work spot.

This was a fantastic amalgamation. Alpesh, his friends and Rekha Ma all belong to different communities neither were they related in any other way, yet humanity prevailed, and they chose to stand beside Rekha maa.

We told Rekha Ma to work until her health permits, after which we shall provide a monthly ration kit.

The world is a better place because humans live Alpesh still exist.

VSSM’s Swavlamban initiative has supported marginal families with interest-free loans that help restore their livelihoods...

Mittal Patel visits our loanee at their settlement

During the olden days,  it was a norm to take up a father’s occupation. So a goldsmith’s son became a goldsmith, a farmer’s child would take up farming and so on. Just like so, we took up our family profession of playing ravanhattha, and it did sustain our generations. But today,  it is an occupation that brings us no returns; people consider us beggars, and they advise us to work to earn a living. Ben, doesn’t playing ravanhattha involve hard work? The younger generation has given up playing ravanhatta; instead, they have taken up odd businesses.

Dalpatbhai, from Ahmedabad’s Kamod village, had shared the above. Eventually, VSSM provided him with an interest-free loan to begin his venture.

The same was with Pravinbhai and Bhailalbhai from Banaskantha’s Bhoyan village. The duo had the skill to sell fashion and home accessories but lacked the capital to do so. They had stopped playing ravanhattha and made meagre earnings by working as menial labour. As we all know, working as a daily wage earner does bring meals to the table but is never enough to meet all the fundamental needs of life.

VSSM had provided loans to the duo. Once the paid off the first loan of Rs. 10K, they took another of Rs. 30k each. The monthly saving rule helped Bhailalbhai purchase a second-hand motorbike while Pravinbhai bought a brand new moped worth Rs. 65000 with a down payment of Rs. 10,000.

The Bharthari community earn their living by singing lullabies. In return of which, they are given sarees and grains. The sarees are repurposed in making shelters that barely protect them from the forces of nature. Sadly, they are left with no choice but to live so.

Pravinbhai and Bhailalbhai have growing independent ventures, each earning Rs. 500 to Rs. 600 daily. They now have a tin roof over their head and the aspiration to build a pucca house. Hopefully, that too shall happen soon.

VSSM’s Swavlamban initiative has supported marginal families with interest-free loans that help restore their livelihoods. The initiative has helped 5000 families until now. We wish each of these families the best in their life.

VSSM bought sewing machine for vaishaliben under its tool support program...

Mittal Patel meets Vaishaliben at VSSM's
office

Vaishliben lives in Ahmedabad. Two years ago, she lost her husband to heart failure. The couple's family lay shattered due to this sudden life-changing event. The responsibility of raising their two children now fell upon Vaishaliben's shoulders.

Initially, friends and relatives provided emotional and moral support. They assured support, but as we all know, we need to fight our battles.

Vaishaliben began working at the khakhra-making factory. However, the remuneration was not enough to meet their expenses. The challenges of life began taking a toll on Vaishaliben's mental health. She even contemplated and attempted suicide. VSSM's Kiran met her when she was undergoing treatment at a hospital. As she was admitted to Civil Hospital, there was no need for funds, but  VSSM remained by her side to provide warmth and strength to help her recover better.

"I know to tailor, women in my neighbourhood work on the sewing machine and earn Rs. 8 to 10,000 a month. I, too, can find sewing jobs if I had a sewing machine." Vaishaliben responded when we inquired if there was anything we could do to help her ease her financial challenges.

VSSM bought a sewing machine for Vaishaliben. We hope that it will help her earn and raise her children better. There is a regular workflow, and life seems a little easy for her. We hope that the children, once they grow up, become the support Vaishali needs.

I have always emphasised on education and financial independence of women. We should not be waiting for some untoward circumstances that force us to seek financial freedom.

People who easily give-up hope need to draw inspiration from individuals like Babukaka...

Mittal Patel meets Babubhai Raval

We waited 51 years to find happiness, and we had faith in God that someday he would bring us happy days.

"How can one remain patient and wait this long for  happiness to reach them?" I asked myself when Babukaka from Patan's Khakhal shared the above.

Babukaka was just six months old when his father passed away."if I went to school the belly remained hungry," he shared in this simple yet powerful truth of the reality that kept him away from school. This one sentence in a deeply rooted Gujarati dialect explained his condition.

When Babukaka came into our contact in 2017, he needed a loan of Rs. 10,000. He required funds to work towards making his dream a reality. VSSM provided him with an interest-free loan of Rs. 10,000 which he used for making coal. The entire family worked hard and stretched the amount to earn better.

"I have managed to get 75 grams armlets done for my wife Rangu Ma and employ five people at my place. All of these after spending on household expenses and paying the monthly EMIs." Kaka shared with a smile on his face.

Kaka has understood the tricks of the trade; he is on the path to success and continues to take loans from us and adhere to the repayment schedule.

Today, Kaka employs 35 people, and his wife and daughter-in-law remain home to focus on his grandchildren's education.

Babukaka has inspired many; the villagers made him file a nomination for the post of Sarpanch at the recently held panchayat election. As a result, Rangu Ma was elected as an unopposed Sarpanch. Babukaka now works for the development of his village.

"I can eat what I wish, buy the clothes I like and help the people I want to!" Babukaka said with humility. We were glad to watch him progress and do good in life. And people who easily give-up hope need to draw inspiration from individuals like Babukaka.
