“Ben, once upon a time, I used to drive a second-hand chakra. But after it developed some snag, I could not get it fixed as repairing it required Rs. 10,000, and I did not have that kind of money. I decided to borrow some money from a private money lender, but the interest was too high. Eventually, I gave up the idea of repairing it and took up working as labour. Later, when I met Rizwanbhai (from VSSM) he offered me an interest-free loan of Rs. 10,000. I got the chakra repaired and restarted my business.

Along with the loan, Rizwanbhai also tutored me on savings and financial management. As a result, I kept paying the instalments and saving from my income. And today I could buy a brand new chakda worth Rs. 1,60,000  on cash. You loan us money whenever we need them, something a bank doesn’t do. They don’t trust us, maybe because we live in huts while you completely believe in us.” Govindbhai from Gandhinagar’s Delvada shared his experiences with us.

The Govindbhai I had met four years ago and the one I met today come across as transformed individuals. He bought a new chakra, took a loan from us and bought buffaloes. And after paying the EMIs he has managed to save Rs. 50,000 as a bank deposit.

“Had we known and learnt about saving, we would have managed to save enough to build our own house. We have never learnt to save money; we just spent all we earned. But after you taught us, we have been building up our savings.” Govindbhai is saving to build a lovely home for his family.

Along with regularly paying the EMIs he also makes a regular donation to VSSM.

"બેન એક વખત હતો જ્યારે હું જૂનામાંથી લીધેલો છકડો ચલાવતો. એ છકડો બગડ્યો અને રીપેરીંગનો ખર્ચ મને 10,000 કહ્યો પણ એ વખતે મારી પાસે દસ હજાર નહોતા. વ્યાજવા મળે તો લેવા ગયો પણ વ્યાજ કમર તોડી નાખે એવું. છેવટે ધંધો મુકી મજૂરીયે લાગ્યો. પછી રીઝવાનભાઈ(VSSMના કાર્યકર જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય)ના સંપર્કમાં આવ્યો ને એમણે મને દસ હજારની લોન આપી. 

છકડો રીપેર કરાવ્યો. મારો ધંધો ફેર શરૃ થયો.. બચતની શીખ પણ તમે આપી એટલે પછી જે કમાયો એમાંથી થોડા થોડા બાજુએ મુક્યા અને જુઓ આજે મારી પાસે મારો પોતાનો નવો છકડો 1,60,000 નો છે. મે લોન નથી કરાવી આખો છકડો રોકડેથી લીધો. 

તમે જ્યારે જરૃર પડે અમને લોન આપો. આવું બેંકો નથી કરતી. અમે છાપરાંમાં રહીએ એટલે કદાચ પૈસા નહીં આપતા હોય. પણ તમે ભરોષો કર્યો"

ગાંધીનગરના દેલવાડાગામમાં રહેતા ગોવિંદભાઈએ આ વાત કહી. ચારેક વર્ષ પહેલાં ગોવિંદભાઈને મળેલી તે વખતના ગોવિંદભાઈ અને આજના ગોવિંદભાઈમાં ઘણો ફેર. 

એમણે નવો છકડો લીધો. અમારી પાસેથી બીજી લોન લઈને ગાય - ભેંસ ખરીદ્યા અને પચાસ હજારની બચત બેંકમાં ભેગી કરી.

એ કહે, "આ બચત કરવાનું અમને નહોતું સમજાતું. જો પહેલાંથી રૃપિયો રૃપિયો બચાવ્યો હોત તો આજે અમારી પાસે પોતાનું ઘર હોત.  મૂળ સમજણ નહોતી ને એટલે બસ ખાલી જીવ્યા. પણ તમે સમજાવ્યું ને આજે આ બધુ થયું"

ગોવિંદભાઈ પોતાનું સરસ ઘર બાંધવા બચત ભેગી કરે છે.. 

અમે આપેલી લોનના હપ્તા તો એ નિયમીત ભરે પણ એ સંસ્થાને સો - બસો રૃપિયા જેવી શક્તિ એવી ભક્તિરૃપે અનુદાન પણ આપે. 

ગોવિંદભાઈની ઈચ્છા એમના છકડાં સાથેના ફોટોની તે એ પણ લીધો.. 

ગોવિંદભાઈ જેવા 5000થી વધુ માણસોને અમે મદદ કરી શક્યા છીએ VSSM  સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી આ બધુ થયું..

“Kantibhai, now that you have prospered, it is time to pay it forwards to the society. So if you begin working in that direction…” before I could finish my sentence, Kantibhai responded. “Ben, my wife and I have been working to help alcohol addicts in our neighbourhood give up their addiction. We have helped 15 individuals leave their habit of consuming alcohol. We also counsel and mediate family disputes. It is an advantage that everyone listens to me. God has given me the ability to understand, and I have to make the most of it. I may not be able to provide financial assistance but can always use compassion and intellect to help others find happiness.

Kantibhai resides in Patan’s Harij. He traded snacks and confectionary through a wooden kiosk he had made adjoining his house. Lack of capital prevented realising his dream of building a pucca shop, but his habit of saving money and working hard with dedication brought him prosperity. Soon he builds his shop. All the funds were utilised towards the construction of the shop; Kantibhai lacked funds to buy goods and products to fill up the shop, so he requested a loan from VSSM’s Mohanbhai (Kantibhai knows the VSSM team in the region).

 VSSM provided a loan of Rs. 20,000, the amount helped him buy a small refrigerator to begin selling dairy products. “The fridge has doubled my income.” Kantibhai shared. The current sales touch Rs 3000 to Rs 3500 with comfortable profits. 

 Kantibhai aspires to stock some more products that will help him boost sales. We pray to almighty for his continued success and salute him for his thoughtfulness for his community.

કાંતીભાઈ તમે સુખી થયા હવે ફરજ સમાજ માટે કાંઈક કરવાની. એ દિશામાં...'  હુું વાક્ય પુરુ કરુ તે પહેલાં જ એમણે કહ્યું, 'બેન હું ને મારી ઘરવાળી અમારા મહેલ્લામાં કોઈ દારૃના રવાડે ચડી ગ્યું હોય તો એને વ્યસન મુક્ત કરવાનું કરીએ છીએ.. આજ સુધી લગભગ 15 લોકોને આ બદીમાંથી મુક્ત કર્યા. આ સિવાય કોઈના ઘરમાં પારિવારી કંકાસ હોય તો પણ અમે વચમાં પડી બધુ ઉકલે તે માટે પ્રયત્ન કરીએ.. વળી મારી વાત બધા માને પણ ખરા.. ભગવાને મતી આપી છે તો એનો સદઉપયોગ તો કરવો પડે. આર્થિક રીતે ભલે કોઈને મદદ ન કરી શકુ પણ જીભથી તો થઈ જ શકે બસ એ કરુ છુ...'

કાન્તીભાઈ પાટણના હારીજમાં રહે. એમના ઘર પાસે એમણે લાકડાનું કેબીન બનાવેલું એમાં એ ગોળી બિસ્કીટ ટૂંકમાં નાસ્તાના પડીકા રાખી વેચવાનું કરે. ઈચ્છા પોતાની દુકાન થાય એવી પણ મુડી નહોતી. પણ ધીમે ધીમે બચત કરતા ગયા. 

ધંધાની ધગશ ને વળી નિષ્ઠા તો જબરી એટલે બસ કુદરતે બરકત આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું ને એમણે કેબીન કાઢી નાનકડી દુકાન કરી. 

પણ દુકાનમાં શોભે તેવો સામાન ભરાવવા પૈસા નહીં. VSSMના કાર્યોથી એ પરિચીત એમણે અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ પાસે લોનની માંગ કરીને અમે 20,000 આપ્યા. જેમાંથી એ દૂધ, દહીંનો વેપાર કરી શકે તે માટે ફ્રીજ લાવ્યા ને કાંતીભાઈ કહે, આ એક ફ્રીજથી જ મારી દુકાનની આવક બમણી થઈ ગઈ. 

હાલ એ 3000 થી 3500 નો વેપાર રોજ કરે છે. નફો પણ સારો એવો છે. 

એમનું સ્વપ્ન દુકાનમાં હજુ વધારે સામાન ભરાવવાનું છે જેથી વેપાર વધારે થાય.  કાંતીભાઈ સફળ થાય તેવી પ્રાર્થના ને તેમની સેવા પારાયણતાને નમન..

સ્વતંત્ર ધંધાની ધગશ રાખવાવાળા પરિવારોને લોન આપી શકીએ તે માટે મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનોનો આભાર...એમના થકી જ આ બધુ થાય છે.

Economic well-being has the utmost potential of transforming one's life. VSSM's Swavlamban initiative aims at providing financial independence to marginalised families by providing them interest-free loans for reviving their traditional livelihoods. The initiative has helped 4500 individuals achieve economic self-sufficiency. 

We have limited funds to offer, funds we are constantly striving to increase. If we have more funds on hand, we will be able to provide loans to a greater number of people. 

VSSM receives donations from many of its well-wishing friends for the Swavlamban program. Recently, we had the opportunity to meet respected Shri Pratulbhai Shroff, founder of Dr K. R. Shroff Foundation. Pratulbhai travelled with us to meet the families who have received support under the program and to make the program reach more families; he donated Rs. 1 crore to the funds. On behalf of all the families we support, I am grateful to Pratulbhai for his generous gesture. 

In a gathering organised to share experiences of past and current loanees of Patan's Harij region we were delighted to learn about their economic condition's positive transformation. 

Many well-wishing donors have supported the program, "We will create some best examples with your support," I always tell them.

આર્થિક સદ્ધરતા માણસનું જીવન બદલી નાખે છે. અમારો સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ જેમાં અમે આર્થિક રીતે તકવંચિત પરિવારોને પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર વ્યવસાય કરવા લોન આપીએ. અત્યાર સુધી 4500 થી વધુ વ્યક્તિઓને અમે લોન આપી છે ને એમાંથી ઘણા લોકો બે પાંદડે થયા છે. લોન આપવા માટે અમારી પાસે મર્યાદીત ભંડોળ આ ભંડોળ વધે તેવા અમારા સતત પ્રયત્નો. વળી વધુ લોકો આ કાર્યમાં સહભાગી થાય તો વધારે લોકોને લોન આપી આર્થિક રીતે સુખી કરી શકીએ. 

VSSM  સાથે સંકળાયેલા ઘણા સ્વજનો આ કાર્યમાં તેમનાથી થાય તે મદદ કરે. પણ હમણાં આદરણીય શ્રી પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફ - ડો.કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશનના સ્થાપકને મળવાનું થયું. 

એકદમ નોખી માટીના માનવી. તેઓ અમારી સાથે જેમને અમે લોન આપી છે તેવા પરિવારોને મળવા આવ્યા ને તેમણે આ કાર્યક્રમ હજુ સઘન કરવા માટે વધુ લોકો સધી પહોંચવા એક કરોડનું અનુદાન આપ્યું. તેમની આ લાગણી માટે તમામ વંચિત પરિવારો વતી તેમની હું આભારી છું.

તાજેતરમાં પાટણના હારીજ આસપાસમાં રહેતા અને જેમને અમે લોન આપી છે કે આપી હતી ને એ પૈસાથી જે સુખી થયા તેમની સાથે બેઠક થઈ. 

લોન થકી તેમના જીવનમાં શું ફેર પડ્યો તેની કાર્યક્રમમાં ઉપસ્થિત સૌએ વિગતે વાત કરી ને તેમના અનુભવો સાંભળી અમે રાજી. 

આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ જેવા ઘણા સ્વજનો આ કાર્યક્રમમાં મદદ કરે એ દરેક સ્વજનને હંમેશાં કહુ છુ તમારા અનુદાનમાંથી ઉત્તમ કરી બતાવીશું. ફરી આપ સૌની લાગણીને વંદન...

Mittal Patel meets Pareshbhai

Pareshbhai resides in Patan’s Harij town; the weak economic condition of the family did not allow him to get higher education. And the social rules forced him to marry at a young age hence, to begin earning early on in life.

He bought a second-hand auto-rickshaw, but most of his income would be spent on repairing the old auto. Fed up, he decided to buy a new or 2-3 years old auto-rickshaw in resale. He had some savings and decided to borrow the deficit amount from VSSM. On our Mohanbhai’s recommendation, we approved a loan of Rs. 50,000 to Pareshbbhai. The loan amount helped him buy a 2-year-old auto on resale. An efficient auto-enabled him to earn better, save better and build his own house.

Pareshbbhai’s enterprise helped him achieve all that he did, but his intent was helpful to others. “You helped me stand on my feet; I have to give it forward and share a part of my earning to others who need it!” Pareshbhai would tell us. 

VSSM provides ration kits under its Mavjat initiative to some destitute elders in villages around Harij. Each month Pareshbbhai volunteers to bring these kits to the elders staying around 7-10 kilometres of Harij. Also, he doesn’t charge any women in labour on their way to the maternity hospital and charges 50% fare to senior citizens.

People of economically sound backgrounds donating a slice of their income is understandable, but ones with limited means doing so is commendable. “I have learnt it from you!” Pareshbhai tells us.

પરેશભાઈ પાટણના હારીજમાં રહે. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી હોવાના લીધે ઝાઝુ ભણી ન શક્યા. વળી નાનપણમાં લગ્ન થયા એટલે ઝટ કામ ધંધે વળગવાનું થયું. 

જુનામાંથી રીક્ષા લઈ તેમણે વ્યવસાય શરૃ કર્યો. પણ એમાંથી જે મળે તેમાંથી મોટાભાગનો ખર્ચ રીક્ષાના રીપેરીંગમાં જાય. આખરે કંટાળ્યા. નવી રીક્ષા અથવા બે કે ત્રણ વર્ષ જુની રીક્ષા ખરીદવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. થોડી મુડી હતી ને જે ખુટતુ હતું તે તેમણે VSSMમાંથી લેવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈ થકી અમે 50,000 રૃપિયા લોન પેટે આપ્યા.

જેમાંથી એમણે બે વર્ષ જુની રીક્ષા ખરીદી. આમ ધંધો સરસ થવા માંડ્યો. બચત થઈ સરસ ઘર પણ બનાવ્યું. 

પરેશભાઈએ સાધનિકી આ બધુ મેળવ્યું.. પણ મનની ભાવના સેવાની. મને તમે મદદ કરી હું બેઠો થયો. મારે પણ મારી કમાણીનો થોડો ભાગ સેવાના કાર્યોમાં કાઢવો જોઈએ એવું એ માને. 

અમારો માવજત કાર્યક્રમ જે અંતર્ગત અમે નિરાધાર વડીલોને રાશન આપીએ. તે હારીજ આસપાસના સાત થી દસ કિ.મી.ના વિસ્તારમાં રહેતા માવતરોના ઘરે દર મહિને રાશનકીટ પહોંચાડવાનું પરેશભાઈ વિનામુલ્યે કરે. 

આ સિવાય તેમની રીક્ષામાં કોઈ પ્રસુતિની પીડા ઉપડી હોય તેવી બહેન બેસે તો એમની પાસેથી ભાડાના પૈસા એ ન લે. સીનીયર સીટીઝન પાસેથી પણ 50 ટકા ભાડુ જ લે. 

આર્થિક રીતે સુખી સંપન્ન જેની પાસે ઘણું છે એ વ્યક્તિ કોઈને મદદ કરે તે તો સમજી શકાય.  પણ મર્યાદીત આવકની વચ્ચે સેવાના ભાવને ટકાવવો ને સેવા કરવી એ કાબીલે તારીખ છે. 

પરેશભાઈ કહે, તમને સૌને જોઈને જ હું આ શીખ્યો. 

સાંભળીને આવો હકારાત્મક ચેપ રસૌને લાગે તેવું સાહજિક કહેવાઈ જ ગયું. 

પરેશભાઈને રીક્ષા માટે લોન આપવા અમને આર્થિક મદદ કરનાર  YVO સંસ્થાનો ઘણો આભાર.

15 is an age when children are busy studying, forging friendships and enjoying a carefree life. But for Govind, the responsibility of tending to the needs of his three younger siblings and grandparents fell on him at the very young age of 15. 

Govind resides in Surendranagar and used to walk around to collect trash in the rucksack laden on his back.

VSSM provided him with a paddle rickshaw to increase his mobility. “His business is doing good,” Harshad informs me. I especially met him during my recent visit to Surendranagar. The rickshaw looked cared for as he had decorated it with yellow flowers.

“Are you happy,” I inquired.

“Because I have my vehicle, it is so easy to do business now,” he tells me.

“What does your father do?”

“He passed away when I was 12-13 years old.”

“And mother?”

“She remarried.”

“Didn’t she bring her with you?”

“My mother took my three younger siblings and me with her, but life was difficult there. She remained busy settling into a new life; most days, there would be no food, and we would be loitering in filth. I could not see my siblings endure such pain. One day I took them all and came to my grandparents in Surendranagar, they are old, but they take care of us. I earn whatever I can from the trash I collect. We do have food at the end of the day.”

I had goosebumps hearing  Govind talk about his struggles. He must be around 20-21 years old now. And he has already been mothering his siblings for the past five years. He is ‘the Moustached Mother,’ as Harshad calls him.

We are grateful to Mumbai based Shri Rajeshbhai Raval for his support; it helped us buy a paddle rickshaw for Govind.

I asked Govind to begin saving some money from whatever he earned. Govind does not have a roof over his head. We had helped him apply for plot allotment, and he was allotted one in Baakarthali village. Very soon, plans will be made for the construction of a house.

“If you begin saving, it will help you contribute to the construction of your house,” I advised while bidding farewell.

“I will give my savings to Harshadbhai,” he replied innocently.

Harshad will mentor him towards better financial planning.

Govind is an example for individuals who run away from responsibilities. He had no compulsion to raise his younger siblings, yet he became their mother.

પંદર વર્ષનો ગોવિંદ મા બની ગયો...

રમવા, ભણવાની ઉંમરે આવી મોટી જવાબદારી ઉપાડવાની સમજણ એનામાં ક્યાંથી આવી?

ગોવિંદ સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં રહે ને ખભે કોથળો લઈ પગપાળા ફરી ભંગાર ભેગો કરવાનું કામ કરે. 

તે પોતાની સાથે ત્રણ નાના ભાઈ બહેન અને દાદા દાદીને સાચવે. અમારા કાર્યકર હર્ષદે અમને આ વિગત કહી અને આપણે એને પેડલ રીક્ષા આપીએ તો એ વધારે કામ કરી શકેનું કહ્યું.

અમે પેડલ રીક્ષા આપી. એનો ધંધો સરસ ચાલે છે ના સમાચાર હર્ષદે આપ્યા. હમણાં સુરેન્દ્રનગર જવાનું થયું ત્યારે એને ખાસ મળવાનું થયું. પેડલ રીક્ષાની આગળ એણે સરસ પીળા ફુલો ભરાવ્યા હતા. 

રાજી છે એવું પુછ્યું તો કહે, 'હવે તો ધંધો કરવાની હોંશ થાય છે. વાહન થઈ ગ્યું ને એટલે'

'તારા પપ્પા શું કરે?' એવું પુછતા એણે કહ્યું, 'એ તો હું બાર - તેર વર્ષનો ત્યારે જ ગુજરી ગયા'

'તો મા?'

'એણે બીજે લગ્ન કરી લીધા... '

'તો એ તને લઈને ના ગઈ'

'હું ને મારાથી નાના બીજા ત્રણ ભાઈ બહેન છે. મારી માએ જ્યાં લગન કર્યા ત્યાં અમને લઈને ગઈ'તી પણ ત્યાં દુઃખ ઘણું હતું. એ એનામાં પડી'તી. અમારા ખાવા પીવાનાય કાંઈ ઠેકાણા નહીં. ગંધવેડામાં પડ્યા રેતા. મારુ તો ઠીક મારી નાની બહેન અને ભાઈને જોઈને જીવ બળતો. તે એક દિવસ એ ત્રણેય ને લઈને હું સુરેન્દ્રનગર મારા દાદા દાદી જ્યાં રહેતા ત્યાં આવી ગયો. દાદી - દાદીની ઉંંમરેય થઈ તોય એ અમને સાચવે. હું ભંગાર વીણીને જે મળે તેમાંથી બધાનું પુરુ કરુ...'

ગોવિંદ આ બધુ કહેતો હતો ત્યારે મારા રૃવાડાં ઊભા થઈ ગયા. હાલ એની ઉંમર 20 - 21ની હશે. આવડો નાનકડો ગોવિંદ હર્ષેદ કહે એમ મુછાળી મા બની ગયો.. આમ તો મુછોના દોરાય હવે ફૂટ્યા પણ એની આ નિસ્બતને પ્રણામ કરવા ઘટે.

આવા ગોવિંદને પેડલ રીક્ષા આપવામાં શ્રી રાજેશભાઈ મહેતા(મુંબઈ)એ મદદ કરી. તેમનો આભાર.

ગોવિંદને મળીને નીકળતા મે એને નાની રકમની બચત કરવા કહ્યું. મૂળ એની પાસે રહેવા પોતાનું ઘર નહીં. અમે એને રહેવા પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે સરકારમાં લખ્યું ને એને બાકરથળીગામમાં પ્લોટ મળ્યો. બસ ત્યાં એનું ઘર થવાનું. જો બચત કરીશ તો થોડા ઘણા ઘર બાંધવામાં તુ નાખી શકીશનું કહ્યું ને એણે તુરત કહ્યું, હું બચત હર્ષદભાઈને આપી દઈશ..

સાવ નીખાલશ.. હર્ષદ એને બચતના પાઠ શીખવશે...પણ ગોવિંદ જવાબદારીમાંથી મોંઢુ ફેરવાનાર વ્યક્તિઓ માટે ઉ.દા.રૃપ લાગ્યો. આમ તો એની ક્યાં કશીયે જવાબદરી હતી છતાં એણે સ્વેચ્છાએ મા બનવાનું સ્વીકાર્યું..

“We cannot collect much junk in the gunny bag lugged on our shoulder,, we also cannot walk far from our settlement. It is tough to walk the distance back if the load is heavy. If we have a tool of our own we can collect more plastic bags and junk. But we do not have money to buy a vehicle for ourselves. We are trash collectors, who would loan us money. We might also not be able to repay it back. Our families are big, we barely manage to feed them all.

You thought of us and gave us this paddle rickshaw. We have nothing to worry now. It will be easy for us to cycle through and collect the junk. We collected junk worth Rs. 150-200 earlier, the mobility due to paddle rickshaw will help us double the amount.” Patdi’s Jagdishbhai shared this while expressing his gratitude for the paddle rickshaw we provided.

Infact, we should be grateful to individuals like Jagdishbhai for collecting the trashed plastic bags, water bottles and pouches and  the irreversible damage to environment it has caused. These families collect the plastic that would otherwise fly around or litter our open spaces. I wonder if these families need to encouraged to collect the trash or we as consumers need to make mindful choices and refuse using plastic.

We all know that the ideal situation would be reducing the use of plastic. But until that happens the paddle rickshaw we have provided will increase the efficiency and provide more opportunities families who survive on trash.

We are grateful to the donors who helped us support these  7 families of Patdi and change their lives for better.

‘ખભે કોથળો લઈ ભંગાર ભેગો કરવા ફરીએ તે એમાં કેટલું ભેગું થાય? પાસુ વસાહતથી ઘણે છેટે નો જવાય. નહીં તો ભેગુ કરેલું લઈને પાસા આવતા દમ નીહરી જાય. ઘરનું સાધન હોય તો ઘણા કાગરિયા(પ્લાસ્ટીક) વીણી હકાય. પણ એ સાધન ખરીદવા ફદિયા ક્યાંથી લાબ્બા. અમે રીયા ભંગારિયા અમને પાસુ પૈસા કોણ ધીરે ને ધીરે તોય અમે પાસા નો દઈ હકીએ.અમારી હોજવેણ જ કેવડી મોટી. બધાનું પેટ જોગુ આમાં માંડ નીહરે...

આ તો તમને અમારો વિચાર આઈવો તે આ પેડલ દીધી. હવે અમને કોઈ વાતે ચિંતા નહીં. હેય ને બે માણસ એમાં બેહી ભંગાર ભેરો કરવા જઈ હકશું. 

પગે ચાલી દોઢસો બસોનો ભંગાર ભેગો કરતા હવે પડેલ આવ્યું તો દોઢસો બસો બીજા ઉમેરાશે..’

સુરેન્દ્રનગરના પાટડીમાં રહેતા જગદીશભાઈએ બહુ લાગણીથી આભાર માનતા આ બધુ કહ્યું..

આપણે સૌ પડીકા ખાઈને કે પાણી પીને જ્યાં ત્યાં પ્લાસ્ટીકની બોટલ કે ઝભલા નાખી દઈએ ને પર્યાવરણને નુકશાન પહોંચાડીએ. પર્યાવરણ માટે હાનિકારક પ્લાસ્ટીક ભેગુ કરનારા આ પરિવારો. તેમને તો આપણે જેટલું પ્રોત્સાહન આપીએ તેટલુ ઓછુ. 

જો કે આદર્શ સ્થિતિ પ્લાસ્ટીકનો વપરાશ આપણે ઘટાડીયે તે. ખેર એ બધું તો જ્યારે થાય ત્યારે પણ ત્યાં સુધી આ પરિવારો આ ભંગાર કે કચરા પર જ નભે.. તેમની આર્થિક ક્ષમતા અમે પેડલ આપી એનાથી વધશે.. પેડલ આપનાર VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્નેહીજનોનો આભાર..

We collect and sell junk. Since we do not have our own vehicle we are required to rent one, which is bit of an issue. We can rent the cart in the morning and need to return it before 4 pm. We cannot hold to the cart after 4, we cannot work beyond 4 even if we want to! Vinodbhai (VSSM’s team member) asked us to buy a cart of our own so that we would not have to worry about paying rent. The only problem was that we did not have funds to buy a cart. We barely earn to bring food to our plate in the evening, how would we have enough to buy a car?”

Vinodbhai offered to sanction an interest-free loan from VSSM, but we fear borrowing money. What if we cannot repay it. We would be tagged as criminals, hence we refused the loan that was offered to us.

Recently, Vinodbhai shared the above experience with us. It was about Nitabahen from Mahisagar’s Santrampur district.

We liked the honesty and humility of Nitabahen and other families living with her. We decided to help the with loans and address their fear of loans.

We convinced them to buy a hand cart for their business, “it would be better to have a paddle rickshaw, it would help us travel more, gather more junk and also sell other stuff along with the junk we gather. Later, we also persuade them to take half the amount as donation and the other half as loan.

The financial assistance for this tool support comes from respected Shri Krishnakant Mehta and Dr Indira Mehta.

The support has helped spread light in lives of 8 Devipujak families, the families are now able to save some money and lead peaceful life. We are grateful for the support and wishing the best to all.

 ભંગાર ભેગો કરી વેચવાનું અમે કરીયે. અમારી પાસે વાહનની સગવડ નહીં. ભાડેથી લારી લઈને અમે ધંધો કરીયે પણ ભાડામાં મુશ્કેલી ઘણી. સવારે લારી મળે અને 4 વાગ્યા પહેલા પાછી આપવાની. આમ વધુ ફરી વધુ ભંગાર ભેગો કરવાની હોંશ હોયતોય કરી ના શકીયે.

આતો વિનોદભાઈ (અમારા કાર્યકર) એ કહ્યું કે તમારા ઘરનું સાધન લઇ લો ને તો ધંધો ચિંતા વગર કરી શકાય. એમની વાત સાચી હતી પણ અમારી પાસે મૂડી નહિ. રોજ જીવાય એટલું માંડ ભેગું થાય એમાં સાધન માટે પૈસા ક્યાંથી કાઢવા? 

વિનોદભાઈ એ સઁસ્થામાંથી વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપવા કહ્યું પણ અમને લોન લેવામાં બીક બહુ લાગે? ના ભરી શકીયે તો ગુનેગાર કહેવાઈએ! એટલે લોન માટે ના કહી.

મહીસાગર જિલ્લાના સંતરામપુરમાં રહેતા નીતાબેનની આ વાત વિનોદે અમને કહી.

અમને નીતાબેન અને એમની સાથેના બધા પરિવારોની ખાનદાની ગમી. અમે નક્કી કર્યુ આ પરિવારને મદદ કરવાનું અને લોન ન લેવા પાછળનો એમનો ડર દુર કરવાનું.

ધંધા માટે પોતાની લારી લેવા સમજાવ્યા. ત્યારે એમણે કહ્યુ, લારી કરતાં પેડલ રીક્ષા હોય તો વધારે સારુ .મૂળ વધુ ફરી શકાય વધારે ગામોમાં પણ જઇ શકાય અને ભંગારની સાથે નાની મોટી બીજી વસ્તુ પણ વેચવાનુ થઇ શકે.

એ પછી 8 વ્યક્તિને સમજાવી પેડલરીક્ષા માટે પચાસ ટકા રકમ મદદ સ્વરુપે અને બાકી પચાસ ટકા લોન પેટે આપી.

આ કામમાં મદદ કરી આદરણીય શ્રી ક્રિષ્નકાંત મહેતા અને ડો. ઇન્દિરા મહેતાએ. 

એમની મદદથી દેવીપુજકના 8 પરિવારોના ધરમાં રોશની થઇ.એ લોકોના ધરમાં હવે બચત થાય છે. સુખેથી એ લોકો હવે જીવે છે. મદદ માટે આપનો ઘણો આભાર અને સૌનુ શુભ થાય એવી ભાવના.

My work in social sector provides me opportunities to meet individuals from varied walks of life, but when it connects me with honest, humble and truthful individuals the heart brims with joy. The marginalised communities we work with have always lived in deficiencies hence, they seldom refuse any potential help coming their way. And there are rare ones like the very humble Devabhai Kangasiya who go on to tell us, ‘I cannot accept charity!’

Over the years we have come across many who have stated they cannot accept charity. VSSM offers interest free loans to expand or revive their independent businesses which they pay back as monthly instalments and also donate Rs. 100 – 200 to VSSM’s activities.

Chotila’s Shardaben Kangasiya would buy the products she sold with money borrowed from private money lender. With an objective to free her from the hefty interest she was paying, VSSM offered her a loan of Rs. 30,000 . Shardaben bought good with all the money. The mother son duo set out to sell the goods. While on their way to sell the goods at neighbouring villages in a chakda one of their bundle fell off and they realised the missing pack after they had travelled a little further. When they returned searching the bundle was nowhere to be found. The lost goods worth Rs. 25,000.

Shardaben was shattered, she cried over her loss. Her sons who stay in a separate house consoled her and gave her Rs. 5,000. Shardaben bought goods from the money and began on a smaller scale, but never did she share this incident with us and continued to pay us the instalments.

Recently while in Chotila, I happen to meet Shardaben when she mentioned about the lost goods. It was only her nobility to not mention about incident and ask for some more help.

Our Chayabahen and Kanubhai have mentored these families well. Shardabahen and her son Chandubhai both believe it is better to live  without  the need of charity. And families like these always inspire us.

સમાજકાર્યો સાથે સંકળાયેલી હોવાના નાતે નિતી ભાત ભાતના લોકોને મળવાનું થાય. જેમાં કેટલાકની સચ્ચાઈ, નિષ્ઠા, વધારાનું ન મેળવવાની ભાવના જોઈને તો રાજી જ થઈ જવાય. આમ તો જે વંચિતો સાથે કાર્ય કરીએ તે બધાય સતત અભાવમાં રહેનાર. એટલે કોઈ મદદ કરે તો એમને સોના જેવું લાગે.. ટૂંકમાં મદદ કરોનું કહેનાર ખુબ પણ અમારા નેકનામના દેવાભાઈ કાંગસિયા જેવાય આંગળીના વેઢે ગણાય એવા ખરા જે કહે, ધર્માદાનું મને નો ખપે... 

ધર્માદુ નો ખપે કહેનાર ઘણાને અમે તેઓ જે વ્યવસાય કરે તે વધારવા લોન આપીએ ને એમાંથી એ રળે ને લોન પરત ભરે સાથે સંસ્થાના કાર્યોમાં સો બસો રૃપિયા દાન પેટે આપે.

ચોટીલામાં શારદાબહેન કાંગસિયા રહે. કટલરી તેમજ હોઝીયરીનો સામાન વ્યાજવા પૈસાથી લાવીને ધંધો કરે. એમણે વ્યાજમુક્ત થવા ત્રીસ હજાર VSSMના સ્વાલંબન કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત લોન પેટે અમે આપ્યા. 

લોન આપ્યા પછી એ સામાન લાવ્યા. ગામડાંઓમાં એમના દિકરા સાથે એ છકડાંમાં બેસી સામાન વેચવા જઈ રહ્યા હતા. તે વેળા છકડાંમાં પાછળથી સામાનનું આખુ પોટલુ પડી ગયું. લગભગ પચીસ હજારનો સામાન પડી ગ્યાનો ખ્યાલ ઘણે આગળ નીકળ્યા પછી આવ્યો. પાછા વળ્યા પણ સામાન ન મળ્યો.

શારદાબહેન ખુબ રડ્યા. એમના દીકરા એમનાથી જુદા રહે. તેમણે હીંમત આપી ને પાંચ હજાર રૃપિયા આપ્યા જેમાંથી એ ફરી સામાન લાવ્યા ને નાના પાયે પાછો ધંધો શરૃ કર્યો. એમણે કોઈ જ ફરિયાદ વગર અલબત આ ઘટનાની જાણ કર્યા વગર જ લોન ભરપાઈ પણ કરી દીધી.

હમણાં ચોટીલા જવાનું થયું તે વેળા એમણે પોટલું ખાવાયાનું કહ્યું. અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈની શારદાબહેનના પરિવારને જબરી શીખ... 

વળી શારદાબહેન પણ એવા ખાનદાન એટલે જ પોટલું પડ્યાનું કહીને મદદ માંગવાનું એમણે ન કર્યું..

ધર્માદાનું તો ભગવાન નો ખવડાવે એ જ હારુ એવું શારદાબહેન ને એમનો દીકરો ચતુરભાઈ બેઉં માને...

આવા પરિવારો અમારા માટે પ્રેરણારૃપ..

I have rented a shop in Chotila market at a monthly rent of Rs. 10000, with the help of little savings I had and some loans, I have built a house in society. The house has cost me Rs. 12.5 lacs. I will invite you for the house warming ceremony; you have to come.”

Chotila’s Sitabahen Kangasiya talked about her financial well-being and growth when I recently met her. Four years ago, Sitabahen and her husband wandered villages to sell hosiery and fashion accessories. They would never have enough capital to buy goods, hence were required to borrow money at hefty interest from private money lenders. 

Sitabahen aspired to expand her business but lacked financial backing.  Jagmalbapa, Sitabahen’s father  had long association with VSSM, he spoke to Chayabahen and Kanubhai for loan to Sitabahen. VSSM offered her loans of 10K, 30K and 50K after repayment of each loan; she might have taken four loans from VSSM. These loans gave her the freedom from the hefty interest rates of private loans and provided opportunities to save money. 

Recently, on my way to Gondal I decided to meet Sitabahen as Chayaben insisted for a very long time. She took me to see her shop; while their daughter looks after the shop, the couple continues to wader across the villages to sell their products. The business has expanded, and so has their income. “Not even in our wildest dreams had we thought that we are capable of paying rent of Rs. 10,000, and to be able to build a house feels so surreal. We did not rely on the government but our hard work to build this house.”

Education and economic well-being are enough to uplift human beings in difficult circumstances. The joy of building a fortune from our sweat and blood remains unparalleled.

I wished Sitabahen happiness and the ability to share her joy towards the betterment of her community. I insisted that happiness doubles when shared, “Of course, I will…” she responded.

'બેન મે ચોટીલાની બજારમાં મહિને દસ હજાર રૃપિયા ભાડેથી દુકાન રાખી  ને મારી બચત ને થોડી બેંકથી લોન લઈને સાડા બાર લાખનું ઘર સોસાયટીમાં લીધુ છે. આ ઘરનું વાસ્તુ કરુ ત્યારે તમને તેડાવીશ. તમારે ખાસ આવવાનું છે....'

ચોટીલાના સીતાબહેન કાંગસિયા હોંશથી પોતાની આર્થિક પ્રગતિની વાત કરી રહ્યા હતા. આજથી ચારેક વર્ષ પહેલાં સીતાબહેન અને તેમના પતિ કટલરી, હોઝયરીનો સામાન લઈને ગામે ગામ ફરી વેચવાનું કરતા. સામાન લાવવા પુરતા પૈસા ન હોય એટલે તગડાં વ્યાજે લાવતા ને મર્યાદીત સામાન ખરીદતા. 

સીતાબહેનને ધંધો મોટો કરવાની હોંશ ઘણી પણ પાસે મૂડી નહીં. સીતાબહેનના પપ્પા જગમાલબાપા VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા. એમણે અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈને સીતાબહેનને લોન આપવા વાત કરી. 

ને અમે સીતાબહેનને દસ હજારને પછી ત્રીસ ને પચાસ એમ ક્રમશઃ લોન આપતા ગયા. લગભગ ચારે વખત લોન લીધી. તગડા વ્યાજમાંથી મુક્તિ મળી એટલે બચત પણ થઈ.

છાયાબહેન ક્યારના સીતાબહેનને મળવાનું કહ્યા કરે. તે હમણાં ગોંડલા જતા ચોટીલા ખાસ સીતાબહેનને મળવા ગઈ. એ વખતે આગ્રહ કરી એ પોતાની દુકાન જોવા લઈ ગયા. એમની દીકરી દુકાન સંભાળે પોતે અને તેમના પતિ આજેય ગામોમાં સામાન લઈને ફરે. ટૂંકમાં ધંધો મોટો થયો આવક વધી. એ કહે, 'અમે ક્યારેય વિચાર્યું નહોતું કે દસ હજાર ભાડુ અમે ભરી શકીશું પણ જુઓ આજે બધુ થાય છે. ઘર તો સ્વપ્ન જેવું હતું. પણ એય થઈ ગયું. સરકાર આપે એવી આશા નથી રાખી. બાવળાના બળ પર વિશ્વાસ હતો તે ઘર થઈ ગયું...' 

શિક્ષણ ને આર્થિક સદ્ધરતા માણસને કપરી સ્થિતિમાંથી બહાર કાઢવા માટે પુરતા. જાત મહેનતે કમાયેલાની મજા જ જુદી. 

સીતાબહેનને ખુબ સુખી થાવ ને સમાજઉપયોગી કાર્યમાં તમારુ સુખ ખાસ વહેંચજોનું. મૂળ સુખ વહેંચવાથી સુખ જ મળે એ ભાર પુર્વક કહ્યું ને એમણે કહ્યું, એ તો કરીશ જ બેન...

Govindbhai, a resident of Ratanpura village near Shihori tells me this.

Diary; for those who cannot put this term into context, let me clarify it. Dairy is a notebook that maintains the daily account for the individuals who borrow money daily. The amount of Rs. 1000 increases to Rs. 1100 the next day. Indeed a hefty interest these individuals are required to pay to private money lenders. 

The Bajaniya men sell plastic homeware and fashion accessories on a motorbike. They never have cash on hand, so they must borrow money from private money lenders. 

“The money we earn is enough to meet their living expenses but does not bring us prosperity,” Vershibhai tells me. 

Under the Swavlamban initiative, VSSM has offered interest-free loans of Rs. 20,000 each to eight Bajaniya individuals to help them pursue their chosen occupations and attain freedom from the hefty debts of private money lenders. Many of them have already repaid Rs. 2000 before the month finishes. Apart from the instalment, they have also donated to the organization. 

“Ben, let us plan a Bajaniya convention for the community in this region. We were hoping you could make them understand that you can free us from the Diary. Also, help us establish a wholesale store of goods we sell in Shihori itself. The store can work as a cooperative. The Bajaniya community members will purchase the goods from this store, others willing to buy them shall also be allowed, and the profit earned will be shared amongst the cooperative members.  

We have been striving to evolve such models for a very long time and have educated numerous communities on the same. But as they say, things happen when they are destined to happen. Now that the community has felt the need, we are sure that this will be accomplished soon. 

And when we free them from their Diary, we shall make them take a pledge that they will be careful to not fall into the trap again….

ડાયરીમાંથી મુક્તી આપી...

શિહોરી નજીકના રતનપુરાગામમાં રહેતા ગોવિંદભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. 

ડાયરીના ચલણને ન સમજનારને ડાયરી એટલે શું એ પ્રશ્ન થશે.. એટલે થોડી ચોખવટ કરુ.

 દૈનિક  વ્યાજવા લેવાતા પૈસાના લેખાજોખા જેમાં રહે તે ડાયરી.. હજાર રૃપિયા ઉધાર લઈએ તો બીજે દિવસે હજારના અગિયારસો ચુકવવાના ટૂંકમાં દૈનિક તગડુ વ્યાજ..

બજાણિયા પરિવારો મોટરબાઈક પર પ્લાસ્ટીકનો ઘર વપરાશનો સામાન એ સિવાય બંગડી બોરિયા બક્કલ વગેરે વેચે.. હાથ વગી મોટી મુડી નહીં એટલે વ્યાજવા પૈસાથી ધંધો કરે.. જેમાં ઘર ચાલી જાય પણ આર્થિક રીતે સદ્ધર ન થવાય એવું વેરશીભાઈ કહે.

VSSMના સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત અમે આઠ બજાણિયા ભાઈઓને તેઓ જે વ્યવસાય કરે તે કરવા અને વ્યાજના ચૂંગાલમાંથી છૂટવા પ્રત્યેકને વીસ વીસ હજારની લોન આપી.. ને કેટલાકે તો મહિનો પતે એ પહેલાં જ બે હજારનો હપ્તો ભરી પણ દીધો.. વળી હપ્તા સાથે સંસ્થાના સેવાકાર્યો માટે ધર્માદા પેટે સો દોઢસો રૃપિયા પણ એમણે આપ્યા... 

વેરશીભાઈ કહે, બેન આપણા આ વિસ્તારના બધા બજાણિયાનું સંમેલન કરીએ ને તમે એમને આ સમજ આપો આપણે બધાને ડાયરીમાંથી મુક્ત કરી દઈએ. પછી અમે જે સામાન વેચીએ તેની હોલસેલની દુકાન શિહોરીમાં જ કરવામાં મદદ કરો. મંડળીની જેમ એ દુકાન ચાલે. અમે બજાણિયા ત્યાંથી જ સામાન લઈએ ને બજાણિયા સિવાય બીજા ને સામાન જોઈતો હોય તોય આપવાનો ને જે નફો થાય તે મંડળીના બધા સભ્યોમાં વહેંચાય એમ કરવાનું.

સાચા લોકોને શોધવા એય મોટી કવાયત એ માટે અમારા કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરભાઈ, નારણભાઈ અને કનુભાઈ ઘણું મથે તેમનો ઘણો આભાર..

આવા મોડલ ઊભા થાય તે માટે અમારી વર્ષોથી ખેવના ને એ માટે સમજ પણ આપીયે. પણ ખેર નિયત સમય પહેલાં કશું થતું નથી.. અમે કહ્યા કરતા પણ હવે તેમના પોતાનામાં જ આવી ભાવના ઊભી થઈ છે તો આ પણ પાર પડશે...

પણ હા બધાને ડાયરીમાંથી મુક્ત તો કરીશું ને સાથે વચન પણ લઈશું ડાયરીમાંથી એક વખત મુક્ત થયા પછી ફેર આ ચુંગાલમાં ન પડવાનું...

I was into forbidden occupations, but I fell in love with the person who changed my life forever. She got me addicted to hard work.

“If we don’t have food, we shall go hungry, but whatever we eat will be earned through our hard work. Money earned unlawfully drain the same way,” she would tell me.  Since that day, I have been pulling this paddle rickshaw.

It has been 15 years since that day, Ramzanbhai has been riding a rented paddle rickshaw ever since. The rent has increased from Rs. 10 to Rs.30.

VSSM’s Swavlamban team members Bhargavbhai and Nisha identified Ramzanbhai, who had ferried some goods to our office.  As usual, we inquired if the paddle rickshaw was his own, which he denied. 

“Would you like it if you could own a paddle rickshaw?” we asked Ramzanbhai.

“What is there not to like?” he responded. “But I do not have money for that!” he continued.

Bhargavbhai reached to meet the shop owner for whom Ramzanbhai ferried the most. We offered him a loan, to which he agreed immediately. But we had to know him better before proceeding any further. The owner decided to become his guarantor, and we offered him the loan to buy a paddle rickshaw.

Ramzanbhai reached straight to our office at Ramdevnagar after purchasing the rickshaw from Delhi Darwaja. He couldn’t thank us enough.

“My wife has called me 25 times; she is eagerly waiting for me to reach home. She wants to distribute jalebi in our neighbourhood now that we have our vehicle.” Ramzanbhai shared with cheer, his face reflecting a joy as if he owned a BMW!

“We hope that you won’t sell it off in case of financial emergency?” we asked.

“This was a desire, to own my rickshaw. The household expenses never spared any money, and I could never save enough to buy even a paddle rickshaw. Now I will follow your advice and save Rs. 1000 a month. I will treat this as a rented rickshaw and deposit Rs. 40 into the piggy bank I have bought. The rickshaw is the first property I have bought; I still have to purchase much more. I also want to be clean in my financial relationship with you to trust me further. I want to buy a house, and only if I have your trust will you support me. Who supports the way you have!”

Ramzanbhai was reeling under immense joy. It sure was infectious.

મારા ધંધા ખરાબ હતા પણ જીવનમાં કોઈ એવું આવી જાય જે તમારુ જીવન બદલી નાખે બસ એક વ્યક્તિને પ્રેમ કર્યો ને એણે મને મહેનતના રવાડે ચડાવ્યો. એ કહેતી, ઓછુ મળે તો ઓછુ ખાવાનું પણ મહેનતનું ખાવાનું. હરામનું હરામના રસ્તે જ જાય.. 

જે દિવસે એણે આ સમજાવ્યું એ દિવસે પેડલરીક્ષા પકડી તે આજ સુધી એના પર જ નભુ છું. 

15 વર્ષથી ભાડે પેડલરીક્ષા ચલાવતા અમદાવાદના રમઝાનભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. પહેલાં દસ ને હવે ત્રીસ રૃપિયા ભાડે એ રીક્ષા લાવે. 

VSSM ની સ્વાવલંબન ટીમમાં કાર્યરત ભાર્ગવભાઈ તેમજ નિશાએ રમઝાનભાઈને શોધી કાઢ્યા. એ કોઈનો સામાન ભરવા અમારા ત્યાં આવ્યા ને ટેવ પ્રમાણે આ પેડલરીક્ષા તમારી છે નો સવાલ પુછ્યોને એમણે ના કહ્યું.પોતાની રીક્ષા થાય તો ગમે? 

રમઝાનભાઈએ કહ્યું કેમ ન ગમે.પણ મારી પાસે પૈસા નથી. અમે લોન આપવા કહ્યું. એમણે તુરત હા પાડી. પણ પ્રશ્ન હતો અજાણ્યા વ્યક્તિનો. ભાગર્વભાઈ તો પહોંચ્યા રમઝાનભાઈ જે દુકાનનો મહત્તમ સામાન ભરે એમના ત્યાં. દુકાન માલીકે રમઝાનભાઈના જામીન ભર્યા ને અમે પેડલરીક્ષા માટે લોન આપી.

એમણે પેડલરીક્ષા ખરીદીને સીધા દિલ્હી દરવાજાથી રામદેવનગર અમારી ઓફીસ આવ્યા.. આભાર માનવા..

હરખથી કહે, મારી ઘરવાળી દિવસના પચીસ ફોન કરી ચુકી ક્યારે આવશો ક્યારે આવશો... તે હવે ઘેર જઈશ ને મહોલ્લા આખામાં જલેબી બાટીશ.. મારે ઘરનું સાધન થઈ ગ્યું.

જાણે બીએમડબલ્યુ ખરીદી હોય એવી ખુશી એમના ચહેરા પર હતી. 

જરા હાસ્ય સાથે ઘરમાં તકલીફ આવશે તો વેચી તો નહીં નાખો ને એવું પુછ્યું તો કહ્યું. આ તો તમન્ના હતી. પણ ખર્ચા એટલા બધા કે આ ખરીદવાની તાકાત જ ન થઈ. પણ હવે તમે બધાએ શીખ આપી તે મહિનાના 1000 બચાઈશ. 

મૂળ ભાડાની જ છે એમ માનીને મે ગલ્લો ખરીદ્યો છે તે એમાં 40 નાખીશ... 

આ પેલી પ્રોપર્ટી ખરીદી હજુ આગળ ઘણું લેવું છે. તમારી સાથે વ્યવહાર પણ સરસ રાખવો છે મૂળ મારે ઘર લેવું છે. મારો વ્યવહાર સારો હશે તો તમે મદદ કરશો નહીં તો કોણ કરે...

રમઝાનભાઈના મોંઢા પર અપાર આનંદ હતો એ સુખી તો અમેય સુખી....

આ કાર્ય માટે મદદ કરનાર સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર... 

તેમની મદદથી જ આવા હજારો પરિવારોના ચહેરા પર સ્મિત લાવવાનું થઈ શકે છે.

Mittal Patel with Subhashbhai and Lilaben

Subhashbhai and Lilaben are residents of Ahmedabad’s Shahpur locality. Subhashbhai sells plasticware to make living while Lilaben is a homemaker.

Subhashbhai was addicted to gutka and pan masala so much that even Lilaben’s  insistence could not convince him to give up the addiction. “I don’t feel hungry, I feel blotted, cannot focus on work…” he would reason out and find an excuse to continue eating gutka.  Then came a time his body gave in to the addiction, Subhashbhai was diagnosed with mouth cancer. Lilaben  ran pillar to post for his treatment, months of treatment saved Subhashbhai’s life, but his physical capabilities deteriorated drastically.

Lilaben took up of responsibility of earning for the family, by taking up chores of a domestic help in surrounding residential colonies. While the parents managed to make two ends meet, the sons decided to lead independent lives. As years passed Subhashbhai gained strength and could think of coming back to work. The money Lilaben earned was barely enough to meet their needs, the couple lacked capital to restock the goods and start their business.

VSSM learned about their condition and decided to loan them Rs. 10000 from which Subhashbhai bought goods and began selling them through a rented paddle rickshaw. We asked them to buy a rickshaw so that he saves the daily rental. “I will take a loan after I begin earning well, cannot afford to take too much for free!!”

The addiction to gutka ruined our life, we are required to start afresh. Lilaben shared from personal experience the importance of giving up the deadly addiction to gutka/tobacco in the video clip shared here.

સુભાષભાઈ અને લીલાબહેન અમદાવાદમાં શાહપુુર વિસ્તારમાં છાપરુ બાંધી રહે. પ્લાસ્ટીકના તગારાં વેચવાનું સુભાષભાઈ કરે ને લીલાબહેન ઘર સંભાળે. 

સુભાષભાઈને માવા મસાલા ખાવાની જબરી લત. લીલાબહેન ઘણું ના પાડે પણ વ્યસન કરનાર માણસના બહાના પણ જબરા. ના ખવું તો પેટમાં ગેસ થાય, માથુ ચડે, કામની સુઝ ન પડે વગેરે વગેરે.. આખરે તબીયતે જવાબ આપી દીધો. મોંઢાનું કેન્સર થયું. લીલાબહેને ઘણા દોડા કર્યા. સિવીલમાં મહિનાઓની સારવાર પછી સુભાષભાઈ બચ્યા. પણ તબીયત નરમ થઈ ગઈ. કામ કરી શકવાની જાણે ક્ષમતા જ ન રહી. 

લીલાબહેને સોસાયટીમાં વાસણ, કચરા પોતાના કામ શરૃ કર્યા. દિકરા ખરા પણ એ જુદા રહેવા જતા રહ્યા. આમ હુતો હુતી હખેડખે ચલાવે. 

સુભાષભાઈની તબીયત ઠીક થઈ. કામ કરવાની ધગશ જાગી પણ તબકડાં, ડોલ, ટબ ખરીદવા પાસે મૂડી નહીં. લીલાબહેન પેટ જોગુ કમાઈ લેતા આમાં બચતનો તો પ્રશ્ન જ નહોતો. 

અમારા ધ્યાને આ બેઉની સ્થિતિ આવી. VSSM એ દસ હજારનો ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ સામાન લઈ આપ્યો. પેડલ રીક્ષા એ દૈનિક 30 રૃપિયા ભાડેથી લાવે ને એના ઉપર સામાન લાદી વેચવા ફરે. અમે ભાડાની જગ્યાએ પોતાની પેડલ રીક્ષા ખરીદી આપવા અંગ કહ્યું તો એમણે કહ્યું, 

એક વખત ફેર કમાતો થાવું પછી લોન આપજો પેડલ ખરીદવા. મફતનું વારે વારે ન લેવાય...

સામાન લઈને નીકળી રહેલા લીલાબહેને પોતાની જીંદગી માવા મસાલાએ બગાડી. પોતાને ફરી એકડ એકથી શરૃ કરવાનું થયું પણ અન્યોની સાથે આવું ન થાય તે માટે વ્યસન ત્યજજોનું ખાસ વિડીયો ક્લીપમાં કહ્યું...

બેઉ સુખી થાય એવી ભાવના....

ને આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર...

Rasikbhai Saraniya shares his experience to Mittal Patel

En route to Surendranagar via Dhrangadhra, we spot Rasikbhai on a bicycle. Rasikbhai Saraniya is one of the 35 recipients of hamry fitted bicycle VSSM has provided to individuals from Saraniya community under its tool support program.

Rasikbhai’s narration of the difference the tool fitted bicycle has made in the lives of these individuals made us realise the impact the support has made.

“We could barely cover 2-3 villages with the heavy Saran loaded on our shoulders; the private transport fellows would never allow us into their vehicles. In the villages, dogs would chase us. It was like harassment, but sharpening knives is our traditional occupation; we lack other skills. Hence,  we have no choice but to continue practising it. However, after you gave us hamry fitted bicycles, we can cover 40 kilometres in a day and earn at least Rs. 500 to 600 daily. And neither do we worry about being chased by dogs.

Just like Rasikbhai and his fellow community men, we could also bring a positive change in the life of Varshaben, who rented a handcart to ferry and sell water across the shops. Varshaben lacked funds to buy her handcart. VSSM, with the support of its well-wishers, gave Varshaben a handcart, saving her Rs. 25 of daily rent.

The change experienced by these Rasikbhai, Varshaben and others proves the little help goes a long way…

અમે ધ્રાંગધ્રાથી સુરેન્દ્રનગર જઈ રહ્યા હતા ને વચમાં એકદમ રસીકભાઈ સાયકલ સાથે દેખાણા. અત્યાર સુધી ખભા પર સરાણ લઈને પગપાળા ફરનાર રસીકભાઈને થોડા દિવસ પહેલાં જ અમે સાયકલ આપેલી. દોઢસો બસો કમાનાર વ્યક્તિના જીવનમાં એક સાયકલ કેવો બદલાવ લાવી શકે તે રસીકભાઈએ કહ્યું ત્યારે ખ્યાલ આવ્યો.  

અમે ખભે સરાણ લઈને એકાદ બે ગામ માંડ ફરતા. રીક્ષાવાળા બેસાડે નહીં ને બેસાડે તો બમણું ભાડુ લે, ગામમાં જઈએ તો કુતરા વાંહે થાય. બહુ હેરાન થતા પણ છરી ચપ્પુની ધાર કાઢવાનો અમારો પરંપરાગત ધંધો. એ સિવાયનું કશું આવડે નહીં. એટલે હખેડખે એ કરે રાખતા. પણ તમે આ સાયકલ માથે હેમરી ફીટ કરી આપી તે હવે 40 કી.મી.નો પ્રવાસ કરવામાંય વાંધો નથી આવતો. 500 - 600 તો આરામથી કમાઈ લઉ છું. હવે કુતરા કે ગાયોની બીકેય નથી.

અમે રસીકભાઈ ને તેમના જેવા અન્ય 35 સરાણિયાઓને સાયકલ પર હેમરી ફીટ કરી આપી ને તેમનું જીવન બદલાયું.આજ રીતે સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં રહેતા વર્ષાબેનનું જીવન પણ બદલાયું. એ ભાડેથી લારી લાવી તેના ઉપર પાણી ભરીને દુકાનોમાં વેચતા. પોતાની લારી ખરીદવાની આર્થિક સગવડ નહીં. VSSM સાથે સંકળાયેલા પ્રિયજનોની મદદ લારી આપી...હવે વર્ષાબેનને નિરાંત છે ને 25 રૃપિયા બચે છે...નાનકડો પ્રયાસ કોઈના જીવનમાં કેવો ફેર પાડી શકે તે આ બધાને સાંભળીએ ત્યારે ખ્યાલ આવે..

Mittal Patel meets Laksdhmanbhai 

We were on our way to meet the Saraniya families living in Amreli’s Savarkundla. “Ben, we have to meet Lakshmanbhai Chuvadiya Koli,” said Rameshbhai, my team member, tells me when we cross Hamapur village on our way. 

We decided to stop at the village where Lakshmanbhai arrived on a bicycle to meet us. Both, Lakshmanbhai and his wife are differently-abled. But while watching him ride his bicycle, one cannot make out that he had issues with his leg.  

Lakshmanbhai tutored children in his village to earn a living. However, the pandemic took a toll on his student strength and most withered away. A self-respecting man, Lakshmanbhai did not like stretching his arms for help. Rameshbbhai was aware of his deteriorating financial condition. We asked him to start some venture for us to help him with an interest-free loan. Lakshmanbhai decided to open a grocery store at his home. VSSM offered a loan of Rs. 15000, and his life was back on track. 

“After I learnt that you were to pass through the village, I have been waiting for you since morning,” he tells me warmly. 

Lakshmanbhai’s son stayed in our hostel and completed his 12th grade. Currently, he is pursuing a BSc IT degree from Ganpat University. Given the family’s economic health, VSSM has been supporting his fees. 

“ Once my son gets employed, we will pay back every penny of the support you have given me. We cannot keep the money received in charity!” he shares. 

Lakshamnbhai insisted we visit his house, but had to refuse the invite as we were stretched on time. We showered our best wishes on Lakshmanbhai, and we continued for Savarkundla. 

અમરેલીના સાવરકુંડલામાં રહેતા સરાણિયા પરિવારોને મળવા અમે જઈ રહ્યા ત્યાં વચમાં હામાપુરગામ આવ્યું. 

અમારા કાર્યકર રમેશભાઈ કહ્યું, બેન લક્ષ્મણભાઈ ચુવાળિયા કોળીને આપણે મળવાનું છે.

અમે ગામના પાદરે વાહન રોક્યુ ત્યાં સાયકલ પર લક્ષ્મણભાઈ આવી પહોંચ્યા. સાયકલ ચલાવતા લક્ષ્મણભાઈને જોઈને લાગે નહીં કે એમને પગમાં તકલીફ છે. માંડ ચાલી શકતા લક્ષ્મણભાઈના પત્ની પણ વિકલાંગ..

ગામમાં ટ્યુશન કરીને પરિવાર પેટિયું રળે. પણ કોરોના આવ્યા ધીમે ધીમે ટ્યુશન છુટવા માંડ્યા. કોઈ સામે હાથ લાંબો કરવો એમને ગમે નહીં. પણ રમેશભાઈ એમના સંપર્કમાં તે એમને ખ્યાલ આવ્યો. લક્ષ્મણભાઈને પોતે કોઈ નવો વ્યવસાય કરી શકે તો અમે મદદ કરીએનું કહ્યું ને એમણે ઘરમાં જ કરિયાણાની દુકાન કરવાની વાત કરી. એ પછી 15000નો સામાન અમે ભરાવી આપ્યો ને એમની ગાડી નીકળી પડી.

હું એમના ગામમાંથી નીકળવાની છું આવી ખબર પડી તે સવારથી તમારી રાહ જોવું છુ બને એવું એમણે ભાવથી કહ્યું..

લક્ષ્મણભાઈનો દીકરો અમારી હોસ્ટેલમાં બાર ધોરણ ભણ્યો. હવે અમે એને BSC IT ભણવા ગણપત યુનિવર્સીટીમાં દાખલ કર્યો. પિતાની ફી ભરી શકે એવી સગવડ નહીં તે અમે ત્યાં પણ તેના નિભાવ અને ભણવાના ખર્ચમાં મદદ કરીએ..

લક્ષ્ણભાઈ કહે, 'મારો દીકરો ભણી નોકરીએ લાગે પછી VSSMએ કરેલી બધી મદદ મારે પાછી દેવાની હો બેન.. ધર્માદાનું અમને નો ખપે..'

કેવી ઉમદા ભાવના.....

લક્ષ્મણભાઈનો ઘણો આગ્રહ પોતાના ઘરે આવવાનો પણ સમયના અભાવે એ ન થયું પણ ગામના પાધરે એમની સાથેનો ફોટો તો લીધો જ...

લક્ષ્મણભાઈને સુખી થાવ તરક્કી કરોની શુભેચ્છા આપી અમે આગળ વધ્યા...

Mittal Patel gives sewing machine to Zakirbhai and his wife 

A freak accident in 2012 had slit open Zakirbhai’s leg into two. 11 surgeries later, Zakirbhai still finds it difficult to remain standing after some time and walks with the help of a stick. The treatment required them to sell off the house they owned.

We appealed one of our well-wishers to help the family, providing ration kit was not a permanent solution.  We suggested they start a business, but before Zakirbhai could reply his wife spoke up, I don’t have a sewing machine. I work on someone else’s machine and the money  helps me meet the household expenses. If I have my own machine my income will increase.

Our dear Krishnakant Uncle and Indira Auntie immediately offered to support when they were briefed about Zakirbhai’s family.

At our office to collect the machine, Zakirbhai’s wife was in tears when she narrated their painful living condition after her husband’s medical emergency.  “We do not like to stretch our arms for help, but we do not have a choice!” she mentioned.

“Ben, can you get me a job of liftman, which I can do sitting on a stool.” Zakirbhai requested while leaving.

ઝાકીરભાઈને 2012માં અકસ્માત થયો ને એક પગ જાણે વચમાંથી ચિરાઈ જ ગયો. 11 ઓપરેશન થયા. માલિકીનું ઘર વેચાઈ ગયું. ત્યારે જતા લાકડીના ટેકે ચાલી શકે એવી સ્થિતિ થઈ. જો કે વધુ સમય માટે ઊભા રહેવું તો આજેય મુશ્કેલ.

આવા ઝાકીરભાઈને મદદ કરવા એક પ્રિયજને કહ્યું. રાશનકીટ એક બે વખત આપી પણ એ કાયમી ઉકેલ નહીં.

અમે એમને ધંધો કરવા કહ્યું. પણ ઝાકીરભાઈ કાંઈ જવાબ આપે તે પહેલાં તેમના પત્નીએ કહ્યું, મારી પાસે નથી. હું બીજાના ત્યાં જઈને સિલાઈ કામ કરુ છુ ને એનાથી ઘર ચલાવું મને પોતાનું મશીન મળે તો મારી આવક વધે. 

અમારા પ્રિય ક્રિષ્ણકાંત મહેતા અને ઈન્દિરા આંટીને વાત કરી ને એમણે તો તુરત આવા પરિવારોને મદદ કરવા હા ભણી. 

સિલાઈનું મશીન લેવા ઝાકીરભાઈ ને તેમના પત્ની ઓફીસ પર આવ્યા ત્યારે સ્થિતિની વાત કરતા કરતા તેમના પત્નીના આંખમાં ઝળઝળિયા આવી ગયા. 

માંગવું ગમે નહીં પણ સ્થિતિ એવી એટલે....

ઝાકીરભાઈએ જતા જતા, મને લીફ્ટમેનની નોકરી મળે કે બેઠા બેઠા થઈ શકે એવું કોઈ કામ મળે તો અપાવજો બેન એવું કહ્યું..

વટવામાં આવું કોઈ કામ હોય તો ચોક્કસ જણાવજો. 

આ અને આવા કેટલાય પરિવારોને આર્થિક રીતે બેઠા કરવા સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરી શકે તે માટે સાધન આપવા મદદ કરનાર ક્રિષ્ણકાંત અને આંટીનો આભાર...

કુદરત સૌને સુખી કરે એવી ભાવના...

Mittal Patel consoles Harshaben

Harshaben was at our office for sewing machine, her face looked grave. After the death of her husband in May the responsibility of three children and aging mother-in-law fell on her.

“Do you know tailoring?”

“I had been sewing once but could not continue because of  family  responsibilities.”

“Will you manage to do it now?”

“The responsibility of raising  three kids is on me. I don’t have a choice, will have to manage.”

Harshaben resides in a rented house in Ahmedabad’s Chanakyapuri. During the deadly second wave of Covid-19, her husband got infected. Few days later his oxygen levels dropped. “We could not find a bed at any hospital, we got him treated at home, got oxygen too but once the bottle was empty he began gasping for air. I took him to Civil Hospital in that condition but….!!” Harshaben was in tears as we consoled.

VSSM with support from YVO, is providing livelihood tools to 48 individuals who have lost the primary earning member of the family to Covid-19 and has exhausted their savings to the treatment. As part of the initiative Harshaben received a sewing machine.

May  Almighty grant strength to  Harshaben to carry out her responsibilities and to save the humankind from the pandemic.

હર્ષાબહેન સિલાઈ મશીન લેવા માટે અમારી ઓફીસ પર આવ્યા.

ચહેરા પર ગમગીની હતી. મે મહિનામાં એમણે એમના પતિને ગુમાવ્યા હતા. ત્રણ બાળકો ને ઘરડાં સાસુની જવાબદારી હવે હર્ષાબહેનના માથે હતી. 

'સિલાઈ કામ ફાવે છે?'

'ઘણા વખત પહેલાં કરતી પછી મારા ઘરવાળાએ છોકરાંઓ પર ધ્યાન આપવા કહ્યું ને મે એ છોડ્યું'

'હવે ફાવશે?'

'શું કરુ ન ફાવે તોય ફવડાવીશ. જીવવું તો પડશે અને ત્રણેયને ભણાવવાના પણ છે'

અમદાવાદના ચાણક્યપુરી વિસ્તારમાં ભાડાના મકાનમાં હર્ષાબહેન રહે. કોરોનાની બીજી લહેરમાં એમના પતિને તાવ આવ્યો ને પછી ઓક્સીજન લેવલ ડાઉન ગયું. એ કહે, 'એમને લઈને દવાખાના ગઈ પણ જગ્યા મળી નહીં. ઘરે ઓક્સિજનની વ્યવસ્થા કરી પણ બોટલ ખતમ થઈ ગઈ. મને આ બધુ કાંઈ સમજાય નહીં. ડચકા લેતા એમને લઈને હું સીવીલ પહોંચી પણ.....'

હર્ષાબહેનની આંખોમાંથી અશ્રુધારા વહેવા માંડી..દિલાશો તો આપવો જ રહ્યો..

હર્ષોબહેન જેવા 148 પરિવારો જેમણે કોરોનામાં ઘરનું કમાનાર મુ્ખ્ય વ્યક્તિ ગુમાવ્યું હોય કે, બિમારીના લીધે બચત ખતમ થઈ ગઈ હોય તેમને YVOની મદદથી સાધનીક સહાય આપવાનું અમે કરી રહ્યા છીએ. હર્ષાબહેનને પણ એના ભાગરૃપે જ મશીન આપ્યું..
