The Meer - we have kept writing about this community - the collapse of traditional occupations, nomadic lifestyles, no benefits from government welfare schemes because they do not feature on government list of the poor and marginalised communities. The Meer traditionally played ’Dafli’ a musical instrument played during festivals and special occasions. Now the community plays Dafli only during the festival Holi. In some parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat the festival of Holi is celebrated for a week or more when communities have from house to house singing-dancing and are given money in exchange. Rest of the year they have no work, so they turn to work as daily wage earners. During the rest of the year many of the Meer families engage themselves in shared farming, where they have to pay a certain fixed amount to land owner. The income isn’t much and the work they put in is really tough. The income is so low that it would hardly sustain they during any emergency situation.
"This year the flash foods of northern Gujarat ravaged the crops of these families. The crops and the land have been washed out. The families have been left with absolutely nothing, there is no top soil on which they can begin farming again!! There is noway even the land owning farmer could help. So how do we earn to feed our children??” was the challenge Popatbhai Meer and many others like him faced.
“VSSM’s Naranbhai comes to our settlement, he teaches our children and helps us with many things. I spoke to Naranbhai about our damage and need for some support. I requested him to help me with a loan of Rs. 30,000 to buy a camel cart. On my request VSSM has supported me with a loan and I brought Rs. 10,000 from a relative - to buy a second had came-cart that costs Rs. 40,000. I an d my wife both work. The season is good and I get enough work to ferry manure and soil to the farms. When we did farming we took credit of Rs. 700 to 1000 from the land owning farmer. At the end of the season he would deduct the money and all we were left with was 3-4 bags of wheat or bajra!! It was difficult to sustain with such low returns. Now I earn Rs. 300 to 400 every day, I get money at the end of the day, no credits is the best part. I really want to work hard and educate my children, am glad VSSM is with us to provide help and guidance whenever required. We are extremely grateful for your support.” Popatbhai narrated.
Rs. 30,000 isn’t a big amount however for families like Popatbhai’s its a huge amount. With the increasing income all they need is proper guidance to manage their money. VSSM’s team members are always prepared to guide these families on such matters. Hopefully Popatbhai will soon break free from the clutches of extreme poverty.
દરિદ્રતામાંથી ઝટ મુક્તિ મળશે એવી અમને આશા છે..
અમે મીર. આમ તો અમારા ઘૈડીયા ડફલી વગાડે, નાચે અને માંગીને ખાય. અમે હવે ફક્ત હોળીના સમયમાં આવી રીતે ફાગ ગાવા જઈએ બાકીના સમયમાં છૂટક મજૂરી, ખેત મજૂરી કરીએ. હું પણ ખેડૂતના ખેતરમાં ચોથાભાગે જમીન રાખું છું. મારો આખો પરિવાર આ જમીન પર ખુબ મહેનત કરે. આમ તો આખી સીઝનની મહેનતમાં રોટલો મળે એટલું. બાકી બચત - બચત ના થાય. સારો ખોટો પ્રસંગ પણ ના નીકળી શકે. ગાડું ગબડ્યા કરે એટલું જ. પણ આ વખતે દુકાળમાં અધિકમાસ જેવી હાલત થઇ આ ચોમાસે આવેલા પૂરે બધું ખલાશ કરી નાખ્યું. ખેડૂતની જમીન ધોવાઇ ગઈ ખુબ નુકશાન થયું. મારો ભાગ પણ છૂટો થયો ખેતી કરવા જેવી જ ના રહી એમાં એમનો પણ શુ વાંક કાઢું. નારણભાઈ (vssmના કાર્યકર) રોજ અમારી વસાહતમાં બાળકોને ભણાવવા આવે અને અમારી તકલીફોમાં ઘણી મદદ કરે. નારણભાઈને મે ખેતરોનો ભાગ છૂટી ગયાની વાત કરી. સાથે સાથે ઊંટલારી માટે લોન માટે પણ કહ્યું. રૂ.૩૦,૦૦૦ની મને vssmમાંથી વગર વ્યાજે લોન મળી અને મારા કુટુંબીજનો પાસેથી ઉછીના રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ લઈને જૂનામાંથી લારી ખરીદી અને ઊંટ લાવ્યો. હાલ ખેતીની સિઝન છે એટલે ખેતરમાં ખાતર નાખવાનું રેતી ભરવાનું કામ મળે છે. સારું કામ થાય છે. હું અને મારી ઘરવાળી બંને કામ કરીએ છીએ. ખેતીમાં ભાગ રાખતાં એ વખતે ઉપાડ પેટે દર મહિનાની ખર્ચી રૂ.૭૦૦ થી રૂ.૧,૦૦૦ ખેડૂત પાસેથી લેતો અને સિઝનમાં અમને મળતાં દાણામાંથી ઉપાડને વળાવી લેતો. એટલે સિઝનના અંતે બે- ચાર બોરી બાજરી કે ઘઉં સિવાય ઝાઝું કશું મળતું નહિ. પણ ઊંટલારીમાં સારું મળતર છે. રૂ.૩૦૦ થી રૂ.૪૦૦ નું કામ થઇ જાય છે અને સૌથી સારું રોજે રોજ પૈસા મળી જાય છે. મારે ખુબ કામ કરવું છે મારા બાળકોને પણ ભણાવવા છે. સંસ્થા અમારી સાથે છે અમને સાચો મારગ બતાડે છે એને ધન્યવાદ છે.’
બનાસકાંઠાના દિયોદરમાં મીર વસાહતમાં રહેતાં પોપટભાઈ મીરે ઉપરની વાત જણાવી ત્યારે રાજી થવાયું. રૂ.૩૦,૦૦૦ એટલી મોટી રકમ નથી પણ આવા વંચિત અને વિચરતા પરિવાર માટે આ રકમ લાખો રૂપિયા સામાન છે. હવે આવક વધી છે. બસ આયોજન શીખવવાનું છે અને એ થશે તો આ દરિદ્રતામાંથી ઝટ મુક્તિ મળશે એવી અમને આશા છે.
