“You look very young, so must you be when your husband passed away? Why didn’t  you consider remarrying?”

“I have two children. I have seen many widowed women leave children with their grandparents and remarry. There is nothing wrong with marrying again,  but the thought of my children growing up without the care and protection of my parents gave me sleepless nights. So I decided to remain single and raise my children.”

Eight years ago, Janakben lost her husband to TB. A resident of Ahmedabad, Janakben is physically challenged yet works as domestic help to earn a living to raise her children. The disability proved to be a challenge when Janakben had to mop the floor, but she had no other choice. Someone advised her to learn sewing to earn better, and she did acquire the skill, but to take it as an occupation, Janakben required a sewing machine, and Janakben lacked the funds to buy one. She did expect someone to help her, but that did not happen when VSSM learnt about her condition and needed it to help her buy a sewing machine.

“My elder son studies in 10th grade; I had to think twice even if I needed to buy a book for him. My elder brother does help, but he too has a family to support. This sewing machine will help me earn a dignified living. I will not have to remain dependent on others to meet the basic needs of my family.” Janakben shared. “I have an APL card; can’t I have a card that helps me get more grains. Even a kilo more would be a relief,” she continued. 

We have briefed her about the government scheme of providing Antyoday ration card for widowed women, and we will be helping her get one.

It amazes us to witness how Rs 10-15,000 can transform someone’s life for good.

તમારા ઘરવાળા ગુજરી ગયા એ વખતે તો તમારી ઉંમર ઘણી નાની હશે આજેય તમે નાના જ લાગો તો બીજા લગ્ન કેમ ન કર્યા?'

'મારે બે બાળકો. મે ઘણી બહેનોને આવી સ્થિતિમાં બાળકોને પિયર કે સાસરીમાં મુકીને બીજે લગ્ન કરી લેતી જોઈ છે. એ લગ્ન કરે એમાં ખોટુયે નથી પણ મને મારા બાળકો બાપ વગરના તો થયા હતા પાછા એને મા વગરના કરવાના.. આ વિચાર માત્રથી ધ્રુજી જવાયું ને લગ્નનો વિચાર પડતો મુક્યો'

અમદાવાદના જનકબહેનના પતિ આઠ વર્ષ પહેલાં ટીબીમાં ગુજરી ગયા. જનકબેન પગે અપંગ બીજાના ઘરના કચરા પોતા કરીને પોતાનું ને બાળકોનું પુરુ કરવા કોશીશ કરે. ઘરકામ કરવા જાય ત્યાં કચરા પોતા કરવામાં ઘણી તકલીપ પડે પણ શું કરે.. કોઈએ કહ્યું સિલાઈ કામ શીખી જાવ પૈસા સારા મળશે. એ શીખ્યા. સરસ કામ આવડ્યું પણ પછી મશીન લેવાની સગવડ ન થઈ. મદદ કરી શકે તેવા સૌની સામે અપેક્ષાથી જોયું પણ ખરા પણ કશું થયું નહીં. અમારા ધ્યાને એમની સ્થિતિ આવી ને અમે મશીન આપ્યું. 

જનકબહેન કહે, 'મારો મોટો દિકરો 10મા ધોરણમાં ભણે એક ચોપડી લાવવી હોય તો ઘણી વખત વિચારવું પડે. મારો ભાઈ મદદ કરે પણ એય બિચારો કેટલું કરે? આ મશીન થકી હું સ્વમાનભેર કોઈની ઓશિયાળી વગર વધારે કમાઈશ'

એમણે કહ્યું. 'મારી પાસે APL કાર્ડ છે. મને વધારે અનાજ મળે એવું કાર્ડ ન મળે? એક કી.ગ્રા. અનાજ વધારે મળે તોય મને ઘણી રાહત રહે'

સરકાર દ્વારા વિધવા બહેનોને અંત્યોદય કાર્ડ આપવામાં આવે છે તેની માહિતી અમે આપીને એ કાર્ડ કાઢી આપવામાં અમે મદદ કરીશુનું કહ્યું. 

10 થી 15 હજાર રૃપિયામં કોઈની જીંદગી બદલાઈ જાય એ વાત જ કેવી અદભૂત..

આ કાર્ય માટે મદદ કરનાર સ્વજનોના અમે આભારી છીએ. ને તમે પણ મદદ કરી કોઈની જીંદગી બદલાવી શકો..

Govindbhai sharing his success story to Mittal Patel

The rich and the privileged will find it difficult to comprehend the power of small loans and support. The Swavlamaban initiative has woken us up to the massive positive impact of the small loans/support. And by small we mean Rs. 10k or 20k. While we might contemplate the benefits of such small loans, it has changed the lives of many impoverished families. But, when the money is loaned with good intention,  the loanees have managed to multiply it 100 times.  One such beneficiary is Govindbhai from Gandhinagar’s Delwada.

Govindbhai and his family live in a mud house, they earn their living from selling vegetables. He had a second-hand chakdo automobile that required repairs before it could become worthy of use. VSSM is striving to enable the families of Delwada to obtain residential plots. Our Rizwan would watch the chakdo lying ideal in from of Govindbhai’s house, on inquiring he learnt about the reason for it not being in use. VSSM recommended Govindbhai for a loan of Rs. 10,000. The loan amount  enabled Govindbhai to repair the chakdo and also rent a small piece of farmland where he began growing vegetables.

VSSM shares regular updates on its social media handles of success stories and learnings of individuals and families whose lives have been positively transformed because of VSSM’s interest-free loans. Govindbhai would regularly read these updates and understand the essence of the loans which is not just revival of their traditional occupations but practising financial prudence as well. 

“Ben, because of the understanding you always give, I have managed to save Rs. 90,000. I was to build a good house hence have saved Rs. 70,000 for the same and Rs. 20,000 is rotating capital for my business. I also purchased a second-hand motorbike. Life would have been much better if you had met us before !!!” Govindbhai shared when I was in Delwada recently.

‘It is never too late to do the right thing…” I replied as I was leaving.

The free food and money is not a long term option for poverty elevation, the poor families need permanent and sustainable remedies that can help them earn their living with dignity. It is here that small loans by VSSM are working wonders to provide much need financial stability and independence to these very poor families.

And it is all because of you that we can become instrumental in heralding this change.  Gratitude always!!

દસ - વીસ  હજાર રૃપિયા કોઈની જિંદગી બદલી શકે? પ્રથમ તો આટલી રકમમાંથી તે વળી શું થાય? એવું આપણે માનીએ. પણ સાચી સમજણ અને પવિત્રભાવ સાથે કોઈને મદદ કરીએ તો એકમાંથી હજાર થઈ શકે એ #ગાંધીનગરના #દેલવાડામાં રહેતા ગોવિંદભાઈને મળીએ તો સમજાય.

ઈંટ માટીથી બનાવેલા છાપરાંમાં ગોવિંદભાઈનો પરિવાર રહે ને શાકભાજીનો વેપાર કરે. જુનામાં છકડો રીક્ષા લીધી. પણ રીપેરીંગ કરાવ્યા વગર એ ચલાવી શકાય એમ નહોતી. અમે દેલવાડામાં રહેતા પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે તે માટે પ્રયત્ન કરીએ. ગોવિંદભાઈના ઘર આંગણે પડેલી રીક્ષા અમારા કાર્યકર રીઝવાન જુએ. એક વખત પુછતા સ્થિતિનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો. VSSMમાંથી દસ હજારની લોન આપી. જેમાંથી એમણે એન્જીન બંધાવ્યું ને થોડી રકમ બચી તેમાં કાંઈક એમણે ઉમેર્યા અને જમીનનો નાનકડો ટુકડો ઉધેડ રાખ્યો. ને એમાં વાવી શાકભાજી..

સંસ્થામાંથી લોન લઈને સફળ થયેલા લોકોની વાતો અમે યુ ટ્યુબ કે ફેસબુક પર લખીએ. આ બધુ ગોવિંદભાઈ વાંચે ને જુએ. અમે દરેક લખાણમાં - વાતમાં આર્થિક સદ્ધરતાની, બચતની વાત ભારપૂર્વક કહીએ. ગોવિંદભાઈ આ વાત બરાબર સમજ્યા.

હમણાં દેલવાડા જવાનું થયું ત્યારે એ મળ્યા ને ખાસ કહ્યં, 'બેન તમે સમજણ આપી તે હાલ મારી પાસે નેવું હજારની બચત છે. સારુ ઘર બનાવવું છે તે સીત્તેર હજાર બેંકમાં મુક્યા છે ને ધંધા માટે વીસ હજાર હાથ પર છે. જુનામાંથી બાઈક લીધું છે. તમે પહેલાં મળ્યા હોત તો અવેરવાનું અમે વહેલાથી શરૃ કરી દીધુ હોત..'

જાગ્યા ત્યારથી સવાર ગોવિંદભાઈ એવુ કહીને ત્યાંથી નીકળી...

આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી હોય તે માણસને ખાવાનું કે અન્ય મદદ એક કે બે વખત માટે આપણે કરી શકીએ. આખી જીંદગી આપણે એને પોષી ન શકીએ. આવામાં તેને પગભર કરીએ તો એ પોતાનું જાતે કરતો થઈ જશે.

આવા વંચિતોના કલ્યાણમાં નિમિત્ત બનવા માટે મદદ કરનાર સૌ સ્નેહીજનોનો આભાર... આપની મદદથી જ આ બધુ શક્ય બન્યું...

Mittal Patel meets Melakaka at his kiosk

 Melakaka lives in Gandhinagar’s Aajol village. I was at Aajol recently, Melakaka insisted I visit his shop, so we did.

“Ben, business is good now, we earn Rs. 700-800 daily. Earlier I had a small kiosk of tin sheets, I could not stock enough of these biscuits, chocolates, snacks etc. but after VSSM provided me with a loan of Rs. 30,000 I managed to upgrade the kiosk to this pucca shop.” Kaka was happy, during a meeting with our dear Raval community members he shared his experiences of growing his business and about his own growth. He advised fellow community men to work hard to earn a living as well as the goodwill of society.

“What is your dream, Kaka?” I asked while stepping out of his shop.

“If you give me another loan, I would want to stock some groceries etc. and make better earning. It will bring prosperity to my family and spare some money to allow me to spare some money  to help others in need.”

Such noble thoughts from humble these humble human beings need to be revered.

Our meetings with individuals like Melakaka who have benefited under the interest-free loans program enable us to comprehend the life-changing impact of small loans on these families.

મેલાકાકા #ગાંધીનગરના #આજોલમાં રહે.

હમણાં આજોલ જવાનું થયું ત્યારે મેલાકાકાએ પોતાની દુકાને આવવા ખાસ આગ્રહ કર્યો ને અમે ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા. 

કાકાએ કહ્યું, 

'બેન હવે તો ધંધો હારો હેડ. 700 - 800નો વકરો થઈ જાય છે. પેલાં પતરાંનું કેબીન હતું જેમાં ગોળી, બીસ્કીટ સિવાય ઝાઝુ નહોતું રાખી શકાતું. પણ VSSMમાંથી ત્રીસ હજાર આપ્યા તે આ દુકાન થઈ ને સામાન પણ વધારે ભરાવી શક્યો'

કાકા એકદમ ખુશ હતા. રાવળ સમાજના પ્રિયજનો સાથેની બેઠકમાં એમણે દરેકને પોતાની પ્રગતિની વાતો કરી ને સૌને મહેનત કરી પૈસા કમાવ તો લોકો આપણો ભાવ પુછતા થશેની વાત કહી. 

કાકા સ્વપ્ન શું છે? એવું એમની દુકાનેથી રજા લેતાં પુછ્યું તો કહ્યું, 'બીજી લોન આપો તો દુકાનમાં કરિયાણુંને બીજો સામાન વસાવું. બે પાંચ રૃપિયા વધારે કમાવવા છે. પરિવાર તો સુખી થશે જ પણ દયા ધરમ માટેય થોડું કાઢવું છે..'

મેલાકાકાની ભાવનાને પ્રણામ..

દસ, વીસ, ત્રીસ હજારમાં કોઈની જીંદગીમાં કેવો ફેર પડી જાય એ મેલાકાકા જેવા અનેકોને મળીને સમજાય છે. આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર પ્રિયજનોનો આભાર તેમજ આ વિસ્તારના અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદ અને રીઝવાન જેઓ આવા પરિવારોને શોધી કાઢે છે તેમના પ્રત્યે રાજીપો...

Jagabhai leaves addiction and starts earning...

Jagabhai, a resident of Ahmedabad’s Ramdevnagar was an alcoholic once. Last year the women of Ramdevnagar raised their voice against the prevalence of alcohol and drugs in their settlement and campaigned for the strict enforcement of prohibition law in Ramdevnagar. Jagabhai too joined the campaign, but he was sure that giving up alcohol was an impossible proposition. 

The VSSM team persuaded him to remain determined and give up his addiction. Madhuben, our extremely zealous team member closely works with the community of Ramdevnagar, she also convinces the youth to give up their addictions, arranges for their treatment and ensures they do not fall off the wagon. Jagabhai was enrolled with a deaddiction program and to our great surprise has been addiction free.

After he sobered down,  he needed work. Madhuben ensured he gets a hand cart under government’s Manav Garima Yojna. The hand card enthused him to work, Jagabhai began selling onions-potatoes. The business helped instilled within him,  hope and confidence to dream.

We pray to almighty to grant Jagabhai good health and wisdom.

The objective for sharing this story was to share the incredible results a determined human being can achieve. He was not sure about ability yet he convinced himself to try and bid adieu to his habit of consuming alcohol. It was his strong will power that has seen him through.

જગાભાઈ...

અમદાવાદના રામદેવનગરમાં રહે. એક વખતના દારૂના વ્યસની.

દારૂ અને ગાંજાથી આ વસાહતને મુક્ત કરવાની ઝુંબેશ આ વસાહતની ભવાની બહેનોએ ઉપાડી. જગાભાઈ એમાં જોડાયા પણ મનની ભીતર દારૂનું વ્યસન પોતાથી નહીં છૂટે એવી પાકી ખાતરી...

એક રીતે કહું તો પોતાના કરતાં દારૂ પર વધારે ભરોસો.

અમે કહ્યું તમારું મન મક્કમ હશે તો તમે ચોક્કસ દારૂ માંથી છૂટી શકશો...

અમારા બહુ ઉત્સાહી કાર્યકર મધુબેન આ વસાહતના લોકો સાથે કામ કરે. વ્યસનમાંથી મુક્ત થવા ઈચ્છતા વ્યક્તિઓની અમે ટ્રીટમેન્ટ કરાવી રહ્યા હતા. જગાભાઈની પણ ટ્રીટમેન્ટ થઈ અને ખરેખર દારૂ છૂટ્યો.

હવે નવરા કેમ બેસાય? કામ તો કરવું રહ્યું..

સરકારની માનવ ગરીમા યોજના અંતર્ગત જગાભાઈ ને હાથલારી અપાવવાનું vssmના કાર્યકર મધુબેન કર્યું..

હાથલારી હાથમાં આવી એટલે કામ કરવાની ધગશ આવી. ડુંગળી બટેટાનો વેપાર શરૂ કર્યો.

સ્વપ્નો જોવાનું શરૂ થયું...

ઈશ્વર જગાભાઈ ને સારું સ્વાસ્થ્ય અને સમૃદ્ધિ બક્ષે એવી પ્રાર્થના...

પણ જગાભાઈની વાત લખવા પાછળનું તાત્પર્ય દારૂ છોડવા માટેનો મનના ખૂણે એમણે કરેલો સંકલ્પ. ભરોસો નહોતો છતાં હું પ્રયત્ન કરીશ એ વાત જેના લીધે આજે જગાભાઈ દારૂના વ્યસનથી મુક્ત થયા

There are numerous ways to define ‘home’, to me a home is a place where my tired body and soul finds peace.

The financially sound families will never experience the struggle it is to create a house to make a home but, to the communities who have been living under the vast open sky and on the bare earth it is a dream they chase for their entire life. And thousands of them never get to experience the peace of living in a house of their own. So, imagine the joy it brings when these families get to know that they will soon be able to live this dream!!

Recently, VSSM became instrumental in bringing this joy to Saraniya and Devipujak families of Chhapi. These families have received plots and assistance from the government but, the Rs. 70,000 they receive from the government is nowhere enough to build a one room house with a sanitation unit. These families are daily wage earners hence, expecting savings from them is also not practical. They had been requesting an interest free loan of Rs. 30,000 from VSSM and also expected a top-up if required!! VSSM did fulfill their requirement and gave the loan they had requested..

The families were delighted at the prospect of moving into a house that will provide shelter from the harsh vagaries of nature… That they soon will have an address to come back to, that they will raise their families in a home and not under a tarpaulin sheet!!

Our best wishes to them and a small prayer that may their families continue to experience this peace!!

ઘરની વ્યાખ્યા કરવી હોય તો ઘણી થાય... પણ મારા મતે હાશ બોલાય ને મનના તમામ અજંપા અને થાકને વિરામ મળે એ ઘર...

જેનું આર્થિકકારણ ઠીક હોય તે પોતાનું #ઘર ખરીદીને કે ભાડેથી લઈને આરામથી રહી શકે પણ જેને આભનું ઓઢવાનું ને ધરતીનું પાથરણું જ નસીબ હોય ને દુર દુર સુધી પોતાની કલ્પના મુજબનું ઘર ખરીદવાની શક્તિ જણાતી ના હોય તેમનેય ઘર કરવાની હોંશ તો જાગે પણ તે પુરી ના થાય. આવામાં અચાનક જ જાગેલી હોંશ પૂર્ણ થવાની ખાત્રી થઈ જાય તે પળ કેવી સુખદ...

આવી જ સુખદ પળમાં અમારે નિમિત્ત બનવાનું થયું. છાપીમાં #સરાણિયા અને #દેવીપૂજક પરિવારોને સરકાર દ્વારા રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવાયા ને મકાન બાંધવા માટે રૃપિયા સીત્તેર હજારેય મળવાના પણ એમાં કાંઈ #સેનિટેશન યુનીટ સાથેનું ઘર ના થાય. વળી પાછી પાસે બચતેય ક્યાં હતી. Vssm પાસેથી ત્રીસ હજારની વગર વ્યાજની લોન લેવાની ને સુંદર ઘર બનાવવાની તેમની વિનંતી. પાછી જરૃર પડે વધારે લેવાની પણ તમન્ના રાખી...

Vssm એ તેત્રીસ પરિવારોને નવ લાખ નેવું હજારની ઘર બાંધકામ માટે વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપી. સૌના મોંઢા પર આનંદ ને હવે પગને વિશ્રામ મળશે, ટાઢ, તાપ અને વરસાદ ખમી શકાય એવા ઘરમાં અમારો ગૃહપ્રવેશ થશે તેવી લાગણી....

બસ જલદી પાકા ઘરમાં રહેતા થાવ તેવી શુભેચ્છાઓ...

લોનના ચેકનું વિતરણ કર્યું તે વેળાની ને હાલમાં આ પરિવારો જ્યાં રહે છે તેની તસવીર...

"Want to save to build a home…."

Hemabhai Meer is a community leader amongst the 25 Meer families staying on the Boda road in Diyodar. An extremely humble and helpful Hemabhai puts the needs of others before his. The Meer families of Boda road work as daily wage earners, they are skilled mud excavators but getting work daily isn’t always possible. When work is scarce they set out to beg. During festivals like Holi these families go house to house singing Holi folk songs in return of which people give them money. 

Hemabhai and his wife Pasiben have always worked for the larger good of their community. They are leaders who work for the betterment of their community. They have been instrumental in bringing the children of the community to school, on behalf of the families Hemabhai also makes rounds of various government offices whenever needed. All this engagement hardly gave him time to work to earn living and support his family so the community supported him for working on their behalf. The death of his first wife and the subsequent remarriage had left Hemabhai in a big debt. 

Once VSSM began working in the settlement, most of the work was done by VSSM so the community’s need to sustain Hemabhai decreased. Hemabhai struggled to make ends meet but he was to dignified to share his problems with VSSM’s Naranbhai. It was Pasiben  who shared their  issues  with Naranbhai and requested him to find support to help them start their own business. The couple wished to get a camel cart. In rural parts camel carts are hired by farmers to ferry manure, grains etc. Buying a camel cart required substantial amount which the family did not have. VSSM loaned Rs. 30,000 to Hemabhai to buy a camel cart. Hemabhai bought a camel cart with part his and part VSSM’s support. The couple now works really hard and earns a decent amount everyday. They get regular jobs of ferrying manure to the farms. He has already repaid Rs. 15,000 - half  his loan amount. 

“ Once I am repay the loan and some remaining previous debt I want to start saving for building my own home,” says an optimistic Hemabhai.

દીયોદરમાં ૨૫ મીર પરિવારો બોડા રોડ ઉપર રહે અને છુટક મજૂરી કરીને પોતાનો ગુજારો કરે. આમ તો ખાડા ખોદવાના કામમાં આ લોકો પાવરધા પણ હંમેશાં કામ મળે એવું ના થાય ત્યારે માંગવા જાય. હોળી વખતે તો તેઓ ડફલી વગાડે અને ફાગ ગાય અને લોકો એમને પૈસા આપે. 

મીર સમુદાયના આગેવાન હેમાભાઈ અને એમના પત્ની પસીબેન vssmના તમામ કામોમાં ખુબ સહયોગ કરે. મીર પરિવારના બાળકો માટે આપણે વસાહતમાં વૈકલ્પિક શાળા શરુ કરી ત્યારે બાળકોને સમજાવીને ભણવા મુકવા માટે આ બન્ને જણ જ સૌને સમજાવતા. જેના કારણે બાળકો ધીમે ધીમે ભણતા થયાં. હેમાભાઈ vssmના કાર્યકર નારણ સાથે સરકારી કચેરીમાં પણ જાય.. ધીમે ધીમે એ પોતે આર્થિક સદ્ધરતા માટે વિચારતા થયા પણ શું કરવું એ સૂઝતું નહોતું. 

આમ તો હેમાભાઈ આગેવાન એટલે મજૂરી કરવા એ પોતે ક્યારેય જાય નહિ લોકોના સામાજિક કામો પતાવવાના અને લોકો એમને સાચવે. એટલે એમનો જીવનનિર્વાહ ચાલે. પણ એમની પત્નીનું મૃત્યુ થયું અને બીજી પત્ની(પસીબેન) લાવવામાં અને બાળકોને સાચવવામાં ઘણું દેવું થઇ ગયું. vssmનું મીર વસાહતમાં કામ શરુ થયું. સામાજિક રીતે થતા ખોટા કામો vssmના કાર્યકર નારણે બંધ કરાવ્યા. હેમાભાઈની આવક તો સાવ જ બંધ થઇ ગઈ. હેમાભાઈ નારણને કશું કહી ના શકે પણ પસીબેને નારણને સઘળી હકીકત કહી અને કંઇક ધંધો કરવા મદદ કરવા કહ્યું. ઊંટલારી હોય તો દિયોદર આસપાસના વિસ્તારોમાં ઘણું કામ મળશે એવી એમને શ્રધ્ધા. પણ એ માટેના પૈસા એમની પાસે નહિ. બચત તો જિંદગીમાં ક્યારેય કરેલી નહિ. આપણે લોન આપવાનું શરુ કર્યું કે, નારણે સૌથી પહેલાં હેમાભાઈને લોન આપવા વિનંતી કરી અને જૂનામાંથી ઊંટલારી ખરીદવા રૂ.૩૦,૦૦૦ની લોન આપણે આપી. થોડા પૈસા એમણે પોતે પણ કાઢ્યા. 

લારી લીધા પછી એક પણ દિવસ હેમાભાઈ અને પસીબેન ઘરે રહ્યા નથી. રોજ સવારે પતિ-પત્ની બન્ને વિવિધ કામો માટે ભાથું લઈને જતા રહે છે. એમને ખેતરમાં ખાતર ભરવાનું કામ ખુબ મળે છે. આ સિવાય માટી અને અનાજ વગેરે ઢોવાનું કામ પણ એ કરે છે. vssmમાંથી લીધેલી લોનનો માસિક હપ્તો રૂ.૧૫,૦૦ એ ભરે છે અને એમના માથે જે દેવું છે એ પણ ઓછું થઇ રહ્યું છે. હેમાભાઈ કહે છે, ‘બસ બહારનું દેવું અને સંસ્થાની લોન ભરાઈ જાય પછી ઘર બનાવવા માટે પૈસા ભેગા કરવા છે..’
