Sitaben selling her plasticware…..

6 Vadee families practicing their traditional occupation of basketry reside in the village of Uun. The occupation isn’t rewarding enough to help  sustain themselves. One of the members Sitaben widowed long back. Her elder son stayed along with his family while her younger son still studies in 5th grade. With the elder son walking out on his mother the responsibly of running the household was solely Sitaben’s. She went in search of work every morning but finding work as manual labour wasn’t necessary. The income of a daily wage earning manual labourers isn’t enough to sustain self and children. Sitaben found it extremely difficult to make ends meet. Under such circumstances VSSM offered a Rs. 20,000 interest free loan to her. The loan has helped Sitaben start her business of selling household plasticware. She has procured the material at wholesale rate and travels  from village to village to sell them. 

Sitaben travels 29 kms. to pay her monthly instalment,  such is her dedication that  whenever  coms to VSSM’s Naranbhai’s home to deposit her instalment she brings along her plasticware so that it can be sold in the society where Naranbhai lives. Sitaben manages to earn Rs. 300 to 400 daily…..

ઊંણ ગામમાં ૬ વાદી પરિવારો રહે છે. આ પરિવારોનો વંશ પરંપરાત વ્યવસાય વાસમાંથી ટોપલા બનાવવાનો પરંતુ હવે આ વ્યવસાયમાં તેમનું ગુજરાન ચાલતું નથી. વસાહતમાં જ રહેતા સીતાબેન દેવાભાઈ વાદી આમ પણ વિધવા હતા અને તેમાં તેમનો મોટો દીકરો લગ્ન બાદ પરિવારથી અલગ થઇ ગયો. નાનો દીકરો હજુ ધોરણ ૫માં અભ્યાસ કરે તેથી ઘરના ગુજરાનની સમગ્ર જવાબદારી હાલ સીતાબેન પર છે. સીતાબેન આસપાસના વિસ્તારમાં છુટક મજૂરી કરીને પોતાનું અને નાના દીકરાનું માંડમાંડ ગુજરાન ચલાવે છે પણ પાંચેય આંગળીઓ સરખી ન હોય તેમ રોજ તેમને ચોક્કસ મજૂરી મળે તેવું નથી હોતું. આવી અવઢવ વચ્ચે તેમણે VSSM પાસેથી રૂ. ૨૦,૦૦૦/-ની વગર વ્યાજની લોન લીધી અને પ્લાસ્ટીકની સાધન સામગ્રી જથ્થાબંધ ભાવે ખરીદી લાવી તેની છૂટકમાં ફેરી કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું.

એટલું જ નહિ પોતાના ગામથી ૨૯ કિમી દૂર દિયોદર લોનના હપ્તાની રકમ VSSM કાર્યકર નારણભાઈ રાવળને આપવા તેમની સોસાયટીમાં આવે ત્યારે તેઓ સાથે સાથે સોસાયટીની બહેનોને પોતાનો માલ પણ વેચતા જાય.. તેમની આવી વ્યવહારિક બુદ્ધિ અને નિષ્ઠાને જેટલી સલામ આપીએ એટલી ઓછી છે. હાલ તેઓ આ નવા વ્યવસાયમાંથી દૈનિક રૂ. ૩૦૦/- થી રૂ. ૪૦૦/-ની આવક મેળવે છે.

VSSM convinces Devnath Vadee  to start his own

The Vadee (Snake Charmer) community or the iconic ‘shake-charmers’ were the face of India. India was know as a land of snake charmers. But with the implementation of the Wildlife Protection Act rendered them jobless. Suddenly the occupation that they had been engaged with all their lives and past generations became illegal,  practicing it meant inviting legal action and fines. The Vadee community mostly lived isolated in the woods, the effect of the new law was the community turning into beggars as they did not have any other skills to earn living and there were no measures by the government to rehabilitate such a huge community. Today we can find many Vadee families including young children  roaming around and  begging as a means to earning, while some hone costumes of sadhus and wander waiting for people to give some alms. Every one tell them to work and earn their living, but the community is clueless. The have no answers to the hows and whats??


VSSM has been striving to create livelihood opportunities for this community. It has made numerous presentations to the government for making some rehabilitation plans for such communities, but have not yielded any positive results. We understand  that this community has to give up begging as occupation and earn a more dignified living, we had initiated the process of identifying youth from the communities willing to put in hard work and prepare them for some profession and  extend  them interest free loans. Everything was to be done by us identify the youth, identify a profession,  train them, link them with the market etc. yet no one was ready to come forth.

This experience made us contemplate further as to how do we make the Vadee youth work and earn living. One thing struck us then.. The Vadee are fond of tea and numerous cups of tea in a day, they do not like to make tea at home, instead would prefer a cup of this beverage from a tea  stall nearby. So we decided to prepare a Vadee gentleman to start a tea stall. Bhacahu has a big Vadee settlement and VSSM has been working with these families for a while, the Bal Dost  Ishwarbhai  talked and  prepared Devnath to start a tea stall with some snacks. So will he be successful was the big question but we had to take this calculated risk if we had to set an example before the community. But Devnath worked hard and succeeded. The hotel and tea stall both are doing good business. The instalments to Rs. 30,000 loan we had sanctioned are also paid regularly while he still manages to save some amount. Devnath’s son studies from Ishwar at the  Balghar support by Aarti Foundation.

“ its enough, I do not  desire to lead a wandering life anymore, when begging people are not happy to give us money and it does take an effort to persuade them, that is hard work too but more than that I would prefer to do this work more, this work is pleasure rather than pain!!!” confesses Devnath.

Gujarat has a huge population of Vadee community. VSSM is trying its level best to provide decent employment opportunities to these families but, its impossible to reach to such vast number alone and we would appreciate if there is some government support in rehabilitation these community.

વાદી – મદારી સાપના ખેલ દર્શાવીને લોકોનું મનોરંજન કરતાં અને આજીવિકા રળતાં. પરંતુ ‘વાઇલ્ડ લાઈફ પ્રોટેક્શન એક્ટ’ અંતર્ગત સાપના ખેલ કરવાં પર પ્રતિબંધ આવ્યો અને આ પરિવારો પાસે અન્ય વિકલ્પ ના બચતાં મોટાભાગના ભીખ માંગીને કે સાધુ બાવાના વેશ ધારણ કરીને ગુજારો કરવા માંડ્યા. vssm આ પરિવારો સ્વમાનભેર રોજગારી મેળવી શકે એ માટે પ્રયત્નશીલ છે. સરકારમાં આ સમુદાયના પુન:વસન માટે પણ ખુબ રજૂઆતો કરી છે પણ એ દિશામાં નક્કર આયોજન થયું નથી. શુ કરવું? આ સમુદાયના લોકોને ભીખ માંગવાનું છોડીને મહેનત કરવાનું અમે કહીએ છીએ પણ એ સૌથી અઘરું છે. જો કે એ કરવાનું તો છે જ. અમે વસાહતોમાંથી જ મહેનત કરવા માટે તૈયાર હોય એવાં યુવાનોને વ્યવસાય માટે વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. કયું કામ એ લોકો કરશે એ પણ આપણે જ નક્કી કરીને એની ગોઠવણ પણ આપણે કરીને આપવાની હતી. એક વર્ષથી મહેનત કરી પણ કોઈ તૈયાર ના થાય.

વાદી ચા પીવાના ખુબ શોખીન અને એમની વસાહતની પાસે વાદી સિવાયના કોઈની ચાની હોટલ હોય જ અને એ ધમધોકાર ચાલે.. કારણ વાદી ઘરે ચા પીવા કરતા હોટલની ચા પીવાનું વધારે પસંદ કરે.. અમે વસાહતમાં ચાની હોટલ કરી શકે એવા એક વાદીભાઈને તૈયાર કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. ભચાઉમાં વાદીની ખુબ મોટી વસાહત અને એમાંથી દેવનાથને ચાની હોટલ અને સાથે સાથે નાની દુકાન જેમાં વેફર, બિસ્કીટ વગેરે વેચવાનું કરવા માટે vssmના કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરે તૈયાર કર્યો. શુ થશે? દેવનાથ બરાબર કામ કરશે? ઘણા પ્રશ્નો હતાં પણ દેવનાથ ગોઠવાઈ ગયો. હોટલ અને ગલ્લો બંને બરાબર ચાલે છે. અમે ૩૦,૦૦૦ ની લોન આપી છે જેના હપ્તા પણ નિયમિત ભરે છે અને બેંકમાં બચત પણ કરે છે. દેવનાથનો એક દીકરો ઈશ્વર પાસે જ આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશનની મદદથી ચાલતા vssmના સત્યમ બાલઘરમાં ભણે છે. દેવનાથ કહે છે, ‘બસ હવે રખડવું નથી. માંગવા જઈએ તો કોઈ સામેથી દેવા રાજી ના હોય એમાંય મહેનત પડે છે પણ એ મહેનત કરતા આ મહેનતમાં વધારે આનંદ છે.’

ગુજરાતમાં વાદીની વસ્તી ઘણી વધારે છે બધાને કામે વળગાડવા જરૂરી છે vssm એનાથી થાય એ પ્રયત્ન કરશે પણ સરકાર વાદીની કુશળતા જોઇને એમનું પુન:વસન કરે તો ઉત્તમ કામ થાય.
