Around 9 years back Talabhai Mir moved from Shihori to  settle in Juna Deesa. He earns his living by selling lace and borders. Before his business took turn for good Talabhai made partial earning by working as labourer. To expand and make the business more productive, Talabhai needed some working capital. With deficit funds he was required to buy his products on credit and traders do not give large quantity of goods on credit. This means Talabhai could sell less and cover less villages in a day. This reduced his ability to earn and make some profit. With very little money he found it difficult to feed his family of 4, making it important that he had an alternate source of income.

Talabhai Mir came into contact with VSSM’s team member in Juna Deesa and requested for a loan of Rs. 20,000. After the loan was sanctioned he bought lace and border worth Rs. 15,000 reserved the balance Rs. 5,000 for some on hand expenses. With the large amount of products to sell, Talabhai covered more villages and reached substantial number of customers. As his savings increased he bought a motor bike. Initially he travelled using local transport which had an impact on his mobility. 

VSSM has also helped him obtain Voter ID card and Aadhar Card, and we have also helped with applying for a residential plot under Pandit Dindayal Awas Yojna. The support he has received from VSSM has. Helped Talabhai stabilize his life. He now wants his kids to study well and we wish his desire to do that comes true. We are glad to have been part of his journey. We at VSSM will always be grateful to all of you who have helped us bring  a change in lives of thousands of individuals like Talabhai.

શિહોરીથી આઠ – દસ વર્ષ પહેલા જુના ડીસામાં સ્થાયી થયેલા તલાભાઈ ઉકાભાઈ રાઠોડ લેસપટ્ટી વેચવાનો ધંધો કરે. તેમને બે બાળકો. તેઓ પહેલા મજૂરી કરવા જતા અને ક્યારેક ક્યારેક લેસપટ્ટીનો ધંધો કરતા. તલાભાઈ આ વ્યવસાયને આગળ વધારવા માંગતા પણ પૈસાના અભાવે કરી શકતા નહીં. જો લેસપટ્ટી ઉધારમાં લે તો તેમને વધુ પૈસા આપવા પડે જેનાથી જોઈએ એટલો નફો થાય નહીં. ઘર ચલાવવા મજૂરીએ જવું પડે. જુનાડીસામાં VSSMનું કામ ચાલતુ જ હતુ તેથી તેઓ સંસ્થાના સંપર્કમાં આવ્યા. તેમને વગર વ્યાજની રૂપિયા ૨૦,૦૦૦ની લોન આપવામાં આવી. જેમાંથી તેઓ રૂપિયા ૧૫,૦૦૦ની લેસપટ્ટી લાવ્યા અને ૫,૦૦૦ રૂપિયા હાથ ખર્ચ માટે રાખ્યા. લોન લીધા બાદ તલાભાઈ ગામડે ગામડે જઈ લેસપટ્ટીનો ધંધો કરવા લાગ્યા. ધીરે ધીરે બચત થવા લાગી. જે બચત થઇ તેમાંથી તેમણે બાઈક લીધું. પહેલા તેઓ ધંધો કરવા જતા તો છકડામાં કે પછી રીક્ષામાં જવું પડતું. હવે બાઈક હોવાથી તેઓ બાઈક લઇ લેસપટ્ટીનો ધંધો કરવા જાય છે. જુના ડીસામાં ઘણા વખતથી વસવાટ કરવા છતા તેમની પાસે મતદાર કાર્ડ કે આધાર કાર્ડ નહોતું. સંસ્થાની મદદથી તેમની પાસે આધાર કાર્ડ અને મતદાર કાર્ડ તો થયા, તે સિવાય પંડિત દિનદયાળ અંતર્ગત તલાભાઈને મદદ મળી શકે તે માટે સંસ્થા તરફથી પ્લોટ માટે ફોર્મ પણ ભરવામાં આવેલ છે. ધીરે ધીરે તલાભાઈ સંસ્થાની મદદથી પોતાના જીવનને આર્થિક રીતે પગભર કરી રહ્યા છે. તેમના બાળકો હાલ ભણવા જાય છે. તેઓ પોતાના બાળકોને સારું જીવન આપવા માંગે છે અને બાળકો ભણી ગણી આગળ વધે તેવી તેમની મહેચ્છા છે. તેમના સપનાઓ પૂરા કરવામાં અમે સહભાગી બન્યા તેનો અમને આનંદ છે. VSSM સંસ્થાના કામને આગળ લઇ જવામાં ઘણા લોકોનો ફાળો રહેલો છે તે દરેકનો હ્રદયપૂર્વક આભાર માનું છું.

Abbasbhai Meer and his family stay in the Lakadia village of Kuttch. The family earns their living from cattle grazing, such livelihoods barely allow families to have a  daily meal.. It is  absolute  poverty under which  they survive.  Their houses are nothing more than shanty roofs with no walls to support. VSSM’s Ishawarbhai had been instrumental in enabling this family acquire their fundamental documents  like Voter ID card, Ration Card and likes…

Along with the issue of having a permeant place for building a house the other crucial problem was of earning a decent living. Cattle grazing was not an option Abbasbhai was prepared to pursue for long time. He had seen his fellow community men start business of selling laces and borders after procuring interest free loans from VSSM. Abbasbhai also wished to start-up a  similar venture but did not have enough investment capital. So he came up to VSSM  with a request for a loan of Rs. 20,000 to help him start his own venture of retailing laces and borders.

These families consider VSSM to be their guardian and whenever in need they look up to VSSM for support. Ishwarbhai recommended the proposal to VSSM and the loan was sanctioned. The venture has helped Abbasbhai make decent living. He hopes to gradually expand his business. All we can hope for is he continues to be successful and earn a dignified living without having to depend on others for help…..

કચ્છના લાકડિયાગામમાં મીર પરિવારો રહે. આ પરિવારો ઢોર ચરાવવાનું કામ કરે અને ગુજરાન ચલાવે. છાપરાંમાં તદન ખરાબ સ્થિતિમાં રહેતા આ પરિવારોને મતદારકાર્ડ, રેશનકાર્ડ જેવા આધારો અપાવવામાં VSSMના કાર્યકર ઈશ્વર માધ્યમ બન્યા. 

રહેણાંકની કાયમી જગ્યાની સાથે સાથે રોજગારી એ તેમનો કાયમનો પ્રશ્ન હતો. આખી જીંદગી ઢોર ચરાવે તોય પોતાના નામે એક ઓરડી લઈ શકવાનું આ મીર પરિવારો કરી શકે તેમ નહોતા. તેમને પણ સામખ્યારીમાં રહેતા મીરની જેમ લેસપટ્ટી વેચવાનો વ્યવસાય કરવો હતો પણ એ માટે પાસે એક રૃપિયાનીયે બચત નહોતી. સંસ્થા તો તેમની ભાષામાં કહુ તો તેમની મા છે. એટલે વસાહતના અબ્બાસાઈએ લેસપટ્ટીના વ્યાપાર માટે રુા. 20,000ની લોન આપવા VSSMને વિનંતી કરી. 

ઈશ્વર આ પરિવારોને સતત મદદરૃપ થાય તેણે અબ્બાસભાઈને લોન અપાવી અને સુરતથી લેસપટ્ટી લાવવાની ગોઠવણમાં પણ મદદ કરી. લેસપટ્ટી વેચીને અબ્બાસભાઈ સારુ કમાય છે. ધીમે ધીમે ધંધો મોટો કરવાની તેમને આશા છે. કોઈનીયે સામે હાથ લાંબો કર્યા વગર તેઓ મહેનતથી પોતાનું ઘર ઊભું કરે તેવી બરકત કુદરત તેમને ધંધામાં આપે તેવી પ્રાર્થના..

20 Meer families that reside in Kutchh’s Samakhiyari earn their living from small cattle-farming. Owning 10-15 sheep and goats does not earn them any significant income but all that each of these family could afford was only these many cattle. The amount of time spend on herding these animals is same and returns are very low.  The income was daily from the wool sheared from the sheep.  Increasing number of these families are wanting  to change their occupation but do not have capital to support their desire. Last year VSSM had supported few  families from this community to change the occupation and they were quite happy with the way their work progressed

Sabeerbhai Meer staying in the same settlement also wished to change his occupation and begin selling decorative lace and borders instead of clinging to cattle farming.  He expressed his wish to VSSM’s Ishwarbhai who forwarded the request to VSSM. Sabeerbhai was given a loan of  Rs. 20,000 by VSSM. Sabeerbhai sources laces and borders from Surat at wholesale rates and retails  them in the villages of Kutchh and Saurashtra. The income and profit is good which helps him both pay back the loan installments and save some amount on regular basis. 

“Nobody is prepared to trust us, the way we live with absolutely no belongings its difficult to put that trust as well. But God has looked upon is and  sent VSSM to help us. I will always say that with VSSM besides us God has taken care of us!!” says a rather delighted Sabeerbhai.

કચ્છના સામખ્યારીમાં ૨૦ મીર પરિવારો રહે. આ પરિવારો ઘેટાં બકરા પાળે અને એનું ઊન વેચીને રોજી રોટી રળે. પણ ઘેટાં ચરાવવા ગામે ગામ ખુબ રઝળવાનું થાય વળી આર્થિક હાલત એટલી સારી ના હોવાના કારણે  માલધારી રાખે એટલા માલ ઢોર રાખવાનું એ કરી ના શકે. ૧૦ કે ૧૫ ઘેટાં બકરાના ઊન વેચીને કેટલું કમાઈ શકાય?

વ્યવસાય બદલવો હતો પણ મૂડી રોકાણ માટે પૈસા નહિ. vssm આ પરિવારો સાથે કામ કરે. આપણે ૭  પરીવારોને લેસ પટ્ટીનો વ્યવસાય કરવા માટે વગર વ્યાજની લોન આપેલી. જેનાથી એમને ખુબ સારો વકરો થયેલો. 

વસાહતમાં રહેતાં સલીમભાઈ મીરને પણ ઘેટાં- બકરાંની જગ્યાએ લેસ પટ્ટી વેચવાનો વ્યવસાય કરવો હતો એમણે vssmના કાર્યકર ઈશ્વરને આ માટે વાત કરી અને ઈશ્વરે એમને vssmમાંથી રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ની લોન અપાવી. સલીમભાઈ સુરતથી લેસપટ્ટી લાવીને સૌરાષ્ટ્ર અને કચ્છના ગામડામાં ફરીને વેચે છે. ધંધામાં એમના કહેવા પ્રમાણે સારો વકરો થાય છે તેઓ લોન તો ભરે છે સાથે સાથે બેંકમાં બચત પણ કરે છે. 

સબીરભાઈ કહે છે, ‘અમે જે હાલતમાં રહીએ છીએ એમાં અમારા ઉપર ભરોષો કરીને લોન આપવાનું અને એ પણ વગર વ્યાજની કોણ કરે. પણ ભગવાને અમારી હામે જોયું એટલે સંસ્થાને મેકલી. હું તો કહીશ કે ગરીબો હામે ભગવાને જોયું ખરું.’

Livelihood Generation for Meer Community of Gujarat By VSSM

Samakhiyali region in Kutchh has a sizeable population of families from Meer Community. These families earn their living by working as menial labour, goat farming, selling lace and borders etc. VSSM has been working towards helping these families get their identity documents, livelihood etc. The  families have received Voter ID cards and Ration Cards. Families who have been given loan by VSSM have began earning well from new ventures they have created. 

One such family is of Fatehbhai and Kaliben - an extremely hard working couple. Fatehbhai earns from goat and sheep farming, selling the sheep wool for living. The earnings are low because he could afford to  buy and rear on 7 to 10 of these cattle. Fatehbhai wanted to change his profession so he  requested Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM to lend him Rs. 15,000 to buy lace and borders (VSSM had supported some individuals in the settlement for the same). He bought the material from Surat. Now the couple sells lace in the bazaar of Samakhiyali and Bhacahu and if there is a need  they also go to villages. The business is good enabling them to pay Rs. 1000 as instalment and save Rs. 500 every month.   

“Life seems to be changing for better now. Gone are the days when we had to drink water to and fill our hungry stomach. We have also bought a barrel to store grains. The earning is enough to help us buy good  amount of food. Your trusting us and lending money has been a blessing otherwise who keeps faith in people who wander, have no permanent address!!” shared Fatehbhai.

Fatehbhai is contemplating to enrol his children in VSSM run hostel in Bhachau. This particular hostel was a Balghar before and now with support of Arati Foundation it will be functioning as a hostel.

વિચરતા પરિવારોને પગભર કરવાની vssmની મથામણ હવે રંગ લાવી રહી છે...

કચ્છના સામ્ખ્યારીમાં મીર પરિવારો રહે. આ પરિવારો છૂટક મજૂરી, બકરાં પાલન અને લેસપટ્ટી લાવીને વેચવાનું કામ કરે. આ પરિવારોને તમામ નાગરિક અધિકારો મળે એ માટે vssm પ્રયત્નશીલ છે. મતદારકાર્ડ, રેશનકાર્ડ આ પરિવારોને મળી ગયા છે. એમનામાનાં કેટલાકને આપણે વ્યવસાય માટે લોન પણ આપી છે. 

વસાહતમાં રહેતાં ફતેહભાઈ અને કાળીબહેન ખુબ મહેનતુ પણ બે છેડા ભેગા કરવાં હમેશાં મુશ્કેલ બને. ફતેહભાઈ ઘેટાં -બકરાં પાલનનું કામ કરે અને તેનું ઊન વેચીને ગુજારો કરે. વળી બકરાં પણ ૭ થી ૧૦ની સંખ્યામાં વધારે ખરીદવાનાં પૈસા ના હોય એટલે માંડ માંડ પુરુ થાય. આ વસાહતમાં રહેતાં લોકોને વ્યવસાય માટે આપણે લોન આપી એટલે ફતેહભાઈએ પણ લેસપટ્ટી લાવીને વેચવા માટે રૂ.૧૫,૦૦૦ની લોન આપવા વિનંતી કરી. ફતેહભાઈને વ્યવસાય બદલવો હતો. આપણે લોન આપી. તેઓ સુરતથી લેસ લાવ્યા. હવે કાળીબહેન અને ફતેહભાઈ સામ્ખ્યારી અને ભચાઉના બજારમાં બેસીને અને જરૂર પડે આ વિસ્તારના ગામડાઓમાં ફરીને લેસ વેચે છે. સારું મળતર મળે છે. vssm માંથી લીધેલી લોનનો માસિક રૂ.૧,૦૦૦ નો હપ્તો ભરે છે અને બેંકમાં રૂ.૫૦૦ ની બચત કરે છે. 

ફતેહભાઈ સાથે ધંધો બરાબર ચાલે છે કે નહિ? એ અંગે વાત કરી તો એમણે કહ્યું, ‘જીવન બદલાઈ રહ્યું છે. સાચું કહું તો પાણી પીને હવે પેટ ભરવું નથી ભરવું પડતું. અનાજ ભરવા નવું પીપડું પણ ખરીદ્યું છે. હવે સામટુ અનાજ ખરીદી શકાય એટલા પૈસા મળે છે. અમે રાજી છીએ. અમે વિચરતી જાતિના. અમારા સરનામાં ના હોય. આવામાં અમારા પર ભરોષો કરીને અમને લોન આપવાનું કોણ કરે? સંસ્થા અમારી સાથે છે એનો આભાર માનીએ છીએ.’ ફતેહભાઈએ એમના બાળકોને ભણવા માટે ભચાઉમાં જ vssm દ્વારા અને આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશનના આર્થિક સહયોગથી ચાલતા બાલઘર કે જે હવે હોસ્ટેલના રૂપમાં પણ કામ કરશે ત્યાં ભણવા મુકવાનું નક્કી કર્યું છે. બદલાવ આવી રહ્યો છે જેનો આનંદ છે.. આ કામ આપ સૌ દાતાઓની મદદ વગર સંભવ નહોતું. સૌ સાથે છો એનો આનંદ અને મદદ માટે  હ્રદયપૂર્વક આભાર વ્યક્ત કરીએ છીએ.

The Meer families of Jantanagar Ahmedabad, extremely  hard working yet unable to break free of the cycle of poverty. These Meer Communities Families earn living by making and selling decorative and enhancements articles  for trucks. When the days  aren’t good and business is hard these families sell the stuff at very low prices often incurring losses. Imaambhai suffered losses doing just that. Completely broke he had no money on hand  to buy raw materials required to make  new articles, he did not know his neighbours well enough to ask their financial help while the other Meer families around him were sailing on the same boat hence asking their help was absolutely out of question. Running out of options  he decided to make trip to Rajasthan and borrow Rs. 5000 from a relative there. 

VSSM’s  Chayaben got to know about this development. Chayaben is a teacher at one of the VSSM Bridge School in the area. She spoke to Imaambhai and convinced him that it was illogical to go all the way to Rajasthan for a mere Rs. 5000, spending Rs. 1000  on travelling that distance. She recommended Imaambhai takes a loan of Rs. 5000 from VSSM which he can gradually pay back. Imaambhai accepted the recommendation and took a loan from VSSM. The money helped him buy raw material to make new set of decorative articles. A new rhythm of selling new articles and buying raw material is in place now, the money keeps rotating, the EMIs are paid regularly with just the last one remaining.  

Chayaben has worked very closely with these Meer Families, she has experienced their pain and cheer hence feels, “these Meers A Nomadic Community need to change their business, making and selling such decorative articles cannot take them further in life, its just enough to sustain them not take them forward.” She spoke her heart to the community,  Imaambhai’s son Farookbhai and Bhurabhai  also from the settlement  understood the intent of Chayaben’s concern. They picked up new trades - we shall write on that in detail in future posts. Its the mutual faith and trust that is working wonders here. To trust them, loan them money when others shy away from them and be part of their progress ….. is how VSSM chooses to work with these nomadic communities, a strategy that is bringing some brilliant results. It is truly an achievement for all associated with Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM .

મીર પરિવારોને પગભર કરવાનું સ્વપ્ન...

જનતાનગર – અમદાવાદમાં રહેતાં મીર પરિવારો ટ્રક શણગારવાનો સામાન બનાવીને વેચે. મહેનત ખુબ અને મળતર ઝાઝું નહિ.. ક્યારેક સાંજ સુધી ધંધો ના થાય તો ખોટ ખાઈને પણ સાંજનો ચૂલો સળગે એટલો સામાન વેચી દે. આવામાં ઈમામભાઈને ખોટ આવી ગઈ. પાસે પૈસા પણ ખાસ ના રહ્યા કે, જેને લઈને નવો સામાન લાવે.. જ્યાં રહે ત્યાં કોઈ ઓળખે નહિ કે એની પાસેથી પૈસા મળે.. અન્ય મીર પરિવારોની હાલત પણ એક સાંધે ત્યાં તેર તૂટે એવી આમ કોઈ પાસે મદદ પણ કેમ મંગાય? છેવટે રાજસ્થાનમાં એમના સગાવહાલાં રહે છે એમની પાસે રૂ.૫,૦૦૦ વ્યાજવા લેવા જવાનું નક્કી કર્યું.. 

મીર પરિવારોના બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું કામ કરતા છાયા બહેનને ઈમામભાઈની આ સ્થિતિનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો એમણે ઈમામભાઈને રૂ.૫૦૦૦ લેવા રાજસ્થાન ના જવા સમજાવ્યા.. એમણે કહ્યું, ‘રાજસ્થાન જવાનાં ભાડામાં જ રૂ.૧૦૦0 જતા રહેશે. એના કરતાં vssm તમને રૂ.૫૦૦૦ લોન પેટે આપશે તમે ધીમે ધીમે પરત કરજો..’ અને આપણે રૂ.૫૦૦૦ની લોન ઈમામભાઈને આપી જેમાંથી ટ્રક શણગારવાનું રો મટીરીયલ એ લાવ્યાં. ઘરે બેસીને એમાંથી બધી વસ્તુ બનાવી અને વેચવાનું કરવા માંડ્યા.. પછી તો સામાન લાવે, વસ્તુ બનાવે અને વેચે.. ઘર ચાલી જાય અમે vssmની લોનના હપ્તા પણ ભરાય હવે તો છેલ્લો એક જ હપ્તો બાકી છે..

પણ છાયાબહેન આ બધા મીર પરિવારોની સતત ચિંતા એ કહે છે એમ, ‘રેડીયમના ધંધામાં મળતર ખાસ નથી રોજે રોજના રોટલા નીકળે બાકી આગળ ના વધાય. મીર પરિવારોએ ધંધા બદલવા પડે..’ અને છાયાબહેન એમની આ હકીકતોની ગણતરી કરીને એમને સમજાવવામાં લાગી ગયાં. વસાહતમાંથી ઈમામભાઈના દીકરા ફારુકભાઈએ અને વસાહતમાં રહેતાં ભુરાભાઈએ છાયાબહેનની વાતમાં શ્રધ્ધા દાખવી નવા વ્યવસાય કર્યા સારું કમાય છે એમની વાત આગળ જણાવીશું.
