“Will giving this pedal rickshaw really help you?”

“Oh yes, sister, it will help a lot. We used to go to Rajkot GIDC from Lodhika to collect scrap sitting in a rented rickshaw. We used to pile the scrap so high on our shoulders and heads that we could barely carry it. On such days, we would barely earn ₹250. After paying the rent, we were left with only ₹150. But now, with this pedal rickshaw, we will be able to collect much more scrap. I estimate we could easily earn ₹800–₹900 per day. Earlier, we barely had enough to fill our stomachs, but now we can even save.”

Hearing this was truly heartwarming. Can ₹15,000 really make such a difference in someone’s life?

As part of our self-reliance program, we provide loans to people who want to start their own independent businesses. But some families are not capable of repaying a loan. For them, we provide tools or equipment suited to their trade, so they can increase their income. In this effort, Rajeshbhai Shah from Mumbai has been a great supporter. One could even say he has “pushed this initiative forward.”

Under this program, eight families in Lodhika were provided pedal rickshaws in the first phase. There are still more families who need rickshaws, but we couldn’t provide them earlier because they were not identified during our survey. Now, we are ready to support them as well.

This initiative has been supported by those who truly believe in the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — Sanjaybhai Shah, Sagar Modi, and Kushal Modi from Diya Trends Pvt. Ltd.

Through everyone’s combined effort, VSSM has brought smiles to the faces of ten families.

"અરે બેન બહુ સારુ રહેશે. અમે લોધિકાથી રીક્ષામાં બેસીને રાજકોટ GIDC માં ભંગાર ભેગુ કરવા જઈએ. તે એ રીક્ષા ભાડુ. પાછુ અમે ખભા ને માથા પર ઊંચકી શકાય એ રીતે  ભંગાર ભેગો કરીએ એના દિવસના બસો અઢીસો મળે. આમાંથી ભાડાના કાઢીએ તો વાંહે દોઢશો વધે. પણ હવે આ પેડલ મળી તે વધારે ભંગાર ભેગુ થઈ હકશે. મારા અંદાજ પ્રમાણે અમે આઠસો, નવસો નો ધંધો કરી હકીશું. પહેલા પેટ જોગુ માંડ નીકળતું પણ હવે બચતેય થાશે. એવું પેડલ રીક્ષા પાસે ઊભા રહીને ધીરુભાઈએ કહ્યું."સાંભળીને આનંદ થયો. 15,000 રૃપિયામાં કોઈની જિંદગીમાં આવડો ફરક પડી જાય?

અમારા સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત અમે પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરવાની ખેવના રાખનાર વ્યક્તિઓને લોન આપવાનું કરીએ. પણ આ કેટલાક પરિવારો એવા હોય કે, જેમની લોન લઈને ભરવાની ક્ષમતા નહોય. એમને એ જે ધંધો કરે તે ધંધાને અનુરૃપ સાધન આપવાનું કરીએ. જેથી એમની આવકમાં વધારો થાય. આ કાર્યમાં મુંબઈના રાજેશભાઈ શાહનો સહયોગ ઘણો. આમ તો એ ધક્કો મારે એમ પણ કહી શકાય. 

આ કાર્યક્રમના ભાગરૃપે જ લોધિકામાં રહેતા 8 પરિવારોને પ્રથમ ફેઝમાં પેડલ રીક્ષા આપી. હજુ કેટલાક પરિવારો છે જેમને પણ પેડલ આપવાની જરૃર છે. પણ એ પરિવારો અમે જ્યારે સર્વે કર્યો ત્યારે મળ્યા નહોતા. એટલે ન આપી શક્યા. પણ હવે આપીશું.

આ કાર્યમાં જેઓ વસુદૈવ કુટુંબકમ ની ભાવનાને ખરા અર્થમાં માને છે તેવા દિયા ટ્રેન્ડ્સ પ્રા.લી.ના આદરણીય સંજયભાઈ શાહ, શ્રી સાગર મોદી તેમજ શ્રી કુશલ મોદીએ મદદ કરી. 

સૌના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી VSSM દસ પરિવારોના ચહેરા પર સ્મિત લાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બન્યું.

Mittal Patel meets nomadic families of Vadodara

Sanjaybhai Nat from Vadodara is a hardworking and talented artist. The dhol and shehnai are traditional instruments linked to his ancestral profession — they are what give him his identity as a Nat. Although he possessed the skill, he didn’t have enough money to buy his own instruments. Because of this, instead of performing independently, he would join a relative’s team in Surendranagar.

One day, he learned that KRSF and VSSM provide loans to people who want to start their own small businesses. He contacted our Vadodara volunteer, Sunil, and took his first loan, with which he bought 20 dhols. Later, with a second loan, he purchased shehnais and proper uniforms for his team.

Today, Sanjaybhai has his own independent team. He receives orders and performs programs across Vadodara district and many other regions.

He says,“The organization breathed life into my career. I can never forget this support. Otherwise, who gives loans based on trust alone!”

Through the initiative of KRSF and VSSM, more than 12,000 families today run their own independent livelihoods and have become self-reliant.

We feel immense joy in becoming instruments of change in the lives of many like Sanjaybhai.

વડોદરાના સંજયભાઈ નટ, મહેનતકશ અને પ્રતિભાશાળી કલાકાર. ઢોલ અને શરણાઈ એમના પરંપરાગત ધંધા સાથે જોડાયેલા સાધન, જે એમને નટ તરીકેની ઓળખ આપે. સંજયભાઈ પાસે આ કળા તો હતી, પણ સાધન ખરીદવા માટે પૈસા નહોતાં. તેથી સ્વતંત્ર રીતે વગાડવા જવાની જગ્યાએ, તેઓ સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં રહેતા સગાની ટીમમાં વગાડવા જતા.

એક દિવસ તેમને ખબર પડી કે KRSF અને VSSM એવા લોકોને લોન આપે છે, જે પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો શરૂ કરવા માંગે છે. એમણે વડોદરાના અમારા કાર્યકર સુનીલનો સંપર્ક કર્યો અને પ્રથમ લોન લીધી જેમાંથી એમણે 20 ઢોલ ખરીદ્યા. એ પછી બીજી લોનથી શરણાઈ અને પોતાની ટીમ માટે સરસ યુનિફોર્મ લીધાં.

આજે સંજયભાઈ પાસે પોતાની ટીમ છે. તેઓ વડોદરા જિલ્લા સહિત અનેક વિસ્તારોમાં સ્વતંત્ર રીતે ઓર્ડર લઈને પ્રોગ્રામ કરવા જાય છે. એમણે કહે, "સંસ્થાએ મારા જીવનમાં પ્રાણ ફૂંક્યા. એનું ઋણ હું ક્યારેય ન ભૂલુ. બાકી અમારા પર ભરોસો કરીને લોન આપવાનું કોણ કરે!" 

KRSF અને VSSM ની પહેલથી 12,000 થી વધુ પરિવારો આજે પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરી સ્વાવલંબી બન્યા છે. સંજયભાઈ જેવા અનેકોના જીવનમાં નિમિત્ત બન્યાનો અમને આનંદ..

Mittal Patel meets Nasib in Vadi settlement of Vadodara

Fortune is his name, yet fortune never favored him.

Born into the Madari community, Nasib could not study much. His father used to perform snake-charming acts, but when the practice was banned, the family was pushed into deep struggle. To support the household, Nasib worked as a daily-wage laborer — yet it was never enough to gather any meaningful savings.

He dreamed of changing his life by owning his own rickshaw.

He saved a certain amount through hard labor and requested the remaining amount as a loan from our volunteer Sunilbhai through the organization. We provided the loan, and he bought the rickshaw.

Today, Nasib proudly drives his rickshaw through the streets of Vadodara.

He says, “Now I drive my rickshaw with full confidence!”

The joy on his face is truly remarkable.

Nasib still lives in a small hut, enduring dirt and difficulties during the monsoon.

His dream is to buy an eco-friendly vehicle and build a permanent house.

Seeing his dedication and hard work, it is certain that his dreams will come true soon.

Through the combined efforts of KRSF and VSSM, over 12,000 families like Nasib’s have become self-reliant and started independent livelihoods.

નસીબ જેનું નામ પણ એનું નસીબ ચમકે નહીં.

મદારી સમુદાયમાં જન્મેલો નસીબ ઝાઝુ ભણી ન શક્યો. પિતા તો સાપનો ખેલ કરતા પણ એના પર પ્રતિબંધ આવ્યો. પરિવાર જીવવા માટે સંઘર્ષ કરવા લાગ્યો. નસીબ છૂટક મજૂરી કરી ઘર ચલાવવામાં ફાળો આપે. પણ એથી કંઈ ઝાઝું ભેગું ન થાય.

જીવન બદલવા પોતાની રીક્ષા ખરીદવાનું એણે સપનું સેવ્યું.

એણે મજૂરી કરીને ચોક્કસ રકમ ભેગી ને બાકીની એણે અમારા કાર્યકર સુનીલભાઈને સંસ્થામાંથી લોન પેટે આપવા કહ્યું. અમે લોન આપી ને એ રીક્ષા લાવ્યો.  

આજે નસીબ વડોદરાની ગલીઓમાં ગર્વથી પોતાની રીક્ષા ચલાવે છે. એ કહે,"હવે હું વટથી રીક્ષા ચલાવું છું!" એનાં ચહેરા પરનો આનંદ અદભૂત.

નસીબ હજુ છાપરામાં રહે છે, ચોમાસામાં ગંદકી અને મુશ્કેલીઓ સહેવી પડે છે,

એનું સપનું ઈકો ગાડી ખરીદવાનું અને પાકુ ઘર બનાવવાનું.

નસીબની મહેનત અને લગન જોઈને એનું સપનુ ઝટ સાકાર થશે એમ ચોક્કસ કહી શકાય.

KRSF અને VSSM ની સંયુક્ત પહેલથી આજ સુધી 12,000 પરિવારો નસીબની જેમ પોતાના પગ પર ઉભા થઈ સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરતા થયા છે.

 The Story of Ajaybhai from Savli (Vadodara) and Namisar

When difficulties arise in life, a person is often forced to seek help from others. But life changes only when someone holds your hand and guides you in the right direction.

We were fortunate to meet not just one, but two Ajaybhais — and we became an instrument in bringing happiness into their lives.

Both of them had little formal education and survived on daily wage labor. It was hard to fulfill basic household needs, and during emergencies, they were often forced to borrow money, sinking under the burden of debt.

They learned that KRSF and VSSM provide loans to help start small businesses. With the help of our volunteer Sunilbhai, they applied for the loan. Both Ajaybhais had learned to repair gas stoves and mixers. With the loan, they started their own small repair work.

Slowly, their hard work began to pay off. Today, they easily earn ₹500–₹700 per day.

Ajaybhai proudly says: “If the organization hadn’t supported us, life would have been very difficult. Whenever we borrowed money from outside lenders, we had to pay back such heavy interest that it would break our back. If we took ₹30,000, we had to return ₹50,000 with interest. Now we’ve completely stopped taking such loans. Sunilbhai even taught us how to save.”

Every month, Ajaybhai donates ₹100 to the organization. He says:“Right now, I give ₹100 a month, but my wish is to give ₹200 every month — permanently.”

They do not earn a lot, yet the spirit of giving back from whatever little they have is truly admirable. May God fulfill all their wishes.

Through the self-reliance program of KRSF and VSSM, thousands of people like Ajaybhai have transformed their lives.

Our prayer is that God continues to make us instruments in such noble work.

વડોદરાના સાવલી અને નમીસરાના અજયભાઈની કહાની

જીવનમાં મુશ્કેલી આવે ત્યારે માણસે બીજા પાસે હાથ ફેલાવવો પડે, આવામાં સાચી દિશા બતાવી શકે તેવા કોઈ હાથ પકડી લે તો જિંદગી બદલાઈ જાય. 

અમને એક નહીં પણ બે અજય ભાઈ મળ્યા. જેમના જીવનમાં સુખ લાવવામાં અમે નિમિત્ત બન્યા. 

આ બેઉ ભણ્યા ઓછુ, છુટક મજૂરી પર નભે. ઘરની જરૂરિયાત પૂરી થવી મુશ્કેલ. ક્યારેક જરૃરિયાતના સમયે કરજ કરવું પડે ને એના ભાર નીચે જાણે દબાઈ જાય.

એમને ખબર પડી કે  KRSF અને VSSM તરફથી વ્યવસાય કરવા લોન મળે છે. એટલે અમારા કાર્યકર સુનિલભાઈની મદદથી એમણે લોન માટે અરજી કરી. બેઉ અજયભાઈએ ગેસ અને મીક્ચર રીપેરીંગનું કામ શીખ્યું હતું, અમારી લોનથી એ કામ શરૃ કર્યું. ધીમે ધીમે મહેનત રંગ લાવતી ગઈ.  આજે એ દિવસના ₹500 - ₹700 આરામથી કમાઈ લે છે. 

અજયભાઈ ખૂબ ગૌરવથી કહે છે, "જો સંસ્થાએ હાથ ન પકડ્યો હોત તો જીવતર અઘરુ હતું. બહારથી ક્યારેક વ્યાજવા પૈસા લઈએ તો એનું કમરતૂટી જાય એવું વ્યાજ આપવું પડતું. જેમ કે 30,000 રૂપિયા લઈએ તો વ્યાજ સાથે 50,000 પાછા ભરવા પડે. હવે અમે બહારથી વ્યાજના પૈસા લેવાનું સદંતર બંધ કર્યું. સુનિલભાઈએ બચત કરવાનું પણ શીખવ્યું."

સંસ્થાને દર મહિને ₹100 અનુદાન આપતા અજયભાઈ કહે છે, "હાલ હું દર મહિને ₹100 આપું છું પણ મારી ઇચ્છા દર મહિને ૨૦૦ એ પણ કાયમ આપવાની છે."

અજયભાઈ ઝાઝું કમાતા નથી પણ એમને જે મળે એમાંથી અન્યોના સુખ માટે આપવાની એમની ભાવના ઉત્તમ. ઈશ્વર એમની મનોકામના પૂર્ણ કરે એવી પ્રાર્થના.

KRSF અને VSSMના સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ થકી અજયભાઈ જેવા હજારો લોકોની જિંદગી બદલાઈ છે.

ઈશ્વર હંમેશા અમને આવા સદકાર્યમાં નિમિત્ત બનાવે – એ જ પ્રાર્થના.

If we try to find a solution to a problem that seems difficult, the solution will certainly be found. The question is whether we are ready to approach the solution in the way we’ve found it.

Kanchanben lives in the village of Dabhana in the field. Her husband works in a company, and when Kanchanben gets work, she does field labor. However, field labor is not available year-round, and it becomes difficult to manage the household with her husband's earnings. She didn’t know what to do.

The government introduced sewing classes in the village. Kanchanben learned sewing. However, the issue was the sewing machine. She didn’t have enough savings to buy a machine.

Dr. K.R. Shroff Foundation provides loans to families of underprivileged and nomadic communities through VSSM. Kanchanben knew about this. She contacted Rajnibhai, a worker from the organization. She requested a loan of 50,000 to buy a sewing machine along with fabric to sew and sell ready-made dresses, blouses, etc.

Kanchanben’s eyes showed determination and the zeal to work hard. People like her definitely deserve loans. A loan was granted, and today she earns five to seven thousand a month. From her earnings, she saves money and dreams of opening a larger shop.

She also wishes to convince her husband to leave his job, buy an auto-rickshaw, and start an independent business.

When Kanchanben met the respected Pratulbhai Shroff, he became emotional. He said, “I am very happy now. VSSM and KRSF together have helped 9,400 families become independent in business. We are pleased to bring happiness into the lives of the underprivileged."

અઘરામાં અઘરી લાગતી સમસ્યાનું સમાધાન શોધવા કોશીશ કરીએ તો સમાધાન મળે જ. મુદ્દો આપણે સમાધાન શોધી તે પ્રમાણે કરવા તૈયાર છીએ કે કેમ તે...

ખેડાના ડભાણ ગામમાં કંચનબેન રહે. પતિ કંપનીમાં નોકરીએ જાય ને કંચનબેન ખતમજૂરી મળે તો એ કરે. પણ ખેતમજૂરી બારે મહિના મળે નહીં ને પતિની કમાણી પર ઘર ચલાવવામાં તકલીફ પડે. શું કરવું એ સમજાતું નહોતું.

ગામમાં સિવણના વર્ગો સરકારે શરૃ કરાવ્યા. કંચનબેન સિવણ શીખ્યા. પણ મુદ્દો મશીનનો હતો. બચત એટલી હતી નહીં કે એ મશીન ખરીદી શકે.

 ડો. કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશન તકવંચિત અને  વિચરતી જાતિઓના પરિવારોને VSSM ના માધ્યમથી લોન આપી ધંધો કરતા કરે એ કંચનબેન જાણે. એમણે સંસ્થાના કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈનો સંપર્ક કરી. સિલાઈ મશીનની સાથે સાથે કપડુ ખરીદી તૈયાર ડ્રેસ,બ્લાઉઝ વગેરે સીવી વેચવા 50,000 લોનની માંગણી કરી.

નિષ્ઠા અને મહેનત કરવાની ધગશ કંચનબેનની આંખોમાં દેખાતી હતી. આવા વ્યક્તિઓને લોન આપવાનું તો કરવું જ પડે. લોન આપી ને આજે હવે એ મહિને પાંચ સાત હજાર કમાતા થઈ ગયા. એમની કમાણીમાંથી એ બચત કરે ને મોટી દુકાન નાખવાનું એ સ્વપ્ન સેવે. 

એમના પતિને પણ નોકરી છોડાવી રીક્ષા લઈ એ સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરતા થાય એવી એમની ઈચ્છા છે.

આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફને જ્યારે કંચનબહેન મળ્યા ત્યારે એ ભાવુક થયા. એમણે કહ્યું, મને અત્યાર ઘણું સુખ છે. VSSM અને KRSF એ મળીને અત્યાર સુધી 9400 પરિવારોને સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરતા કર્યા. તક વંચિતોના જીવનમાં સુખ આપી શક્યાનો અમને રાજીપો..

"Instead of giving me ration, help me start a business... I don’t like sitting idle and eating." If a young person says this, it’s understandable, but this is what 82-year-old Jeevan Kaka was saying. There’s no one in his family. He sleeps in the courtyard of the Mataji temple in Kheda’s Beedj. He lived his life working hard, but was never able to own a house.

We provided Jeevan Kaka with ration every month under the maintenance program, so that he could make his own living and not have to depend on others. But Kaka didn’t like the idea of receiving free food.

One day, Dimpleben from our organization, along with our associate Inderbhai, went to Bidaj in Kheda where they met Jeevan Kaka.

When they inquired about his well-being, Kaka talked about wanting a source of livelihood. In his youth, Kaka used to sell plastic items from a cart. They decided to help him sell those items again, and respected Inder Modi offered to assist.

It’s been around three months since then. Help came through, and Kaka started selling items from the cart. Recently, when I went to Bidaj with Inder Modi, we met Jeevan Kaka again. Kaka said, "Now I have dignity. As long as my hands and feet work, I will work, and if I do business like this, my health will stay good."

We had many conversations with Kaka, but there was no trace of despair or fatigue in his life. Kaka is an inspiration to many... I bow to him in respect.

Thanks to the respected Inder Modi for understanding Jeevan Kaka’s feelings and helping him. As VSSM, we are honored to have been a part of this process...

મને તમે રાશન આપો એના કરતાં મને ધંધો કરી આપો ને.. મને આમ બેસી ને ખાવું ગમતું નથી.' કોઈ જુવાન વ્યક્તિ આવુ કહે તો સમજાય પણ અમને આ કહી રહ્યા હતા 82 વર્ષીય જીવણ કાકા. એમના પરિવારમાં કોઈ નહીં. ખેડાના બીડજમાં માતાજીના મંદિરના ઓટલે એ સુઈ રહે. મહેનત મજૂરી કરીને જીંદગી જીવ્યા. પણ ઘર ન કરી શક્યા. 

જીવણકાકાને અમે માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે. જેથી એ પોતાના જોગુ બનાવી જીવી શકે. કોઈની ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની ન થાય. પણ કાકાને આ મફતનું ખાવું ગમે નહીં.

એક દિવસ અમારા ડિમ્પલબેન અમારી સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજન ઈન્દ્રભાઈ સાથે ખેડાના બીડજમાં ગયા ત્યાં જીવણકાકા મળ્યા.

એમની ખબર અંતર પુછતા કાકાએ રોજીરોટીનું સાધન કરી દેવાની વાત કરી. કાકા યુવાનીમાં લારી લઈને પ્લાસ્ટિકની ચીજો વેચવાનું કરતા. તે એ જ ચીજો વેચવા મદદ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું ને આદરણીય ઇન્દ્ર મોદીએ એ માટે મદદ કરવા કહ્યું. 

આ વાતને ત્રણેક મહિના થયા. મદદ પહોંચી ને કાકાએ લારી પર સામાન વેચવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. હમણાં બીડજ ઇન્દ્ર મોદી સાથે જવાનું થયું ને જીવણકાકા મળ્યા. કાકાએ કહ્યું, 'હવે હખ છે. જ્યાં સુધી હાથ પગ ચાલે ત્યાં સુધી કામ કરવું છે ને આવી રીતે ફરતો ધંધો કરુ તો તબીયતેય સારી રે..'

કાકા સાથે અમારી ઘણી વાતો થઈ પણ ક્યાંય જીવન પ્રત્યે હતાશા નહોતી ના કોઈ થાક...

A new sewing machine would help Pujaben earn more
for her family

The term "women's empowerment" has become quite common nowadays. But the question arises: What does empowerment really mean? Is it empowerment for a woman to step out of the house and work? Or is it empowerment to walk shoulder to shoulder with men?

Like me, many people don't consider these things as true empowerment. True empowerment is when a woman can make her own decisions in her own way.

I recently met Puja, who is an example of true empowerment. She is not very old, maybe not even 25. She got married to a man from the village of Bidaj and moved there. Her husband worked as a farm laborer and managed the household. After marriage, Puja also worked as a laborer. But then, she had a daughter, and she couldn’t bear to leave her.

Puja knew how to do stitching. Her mother had taught her, but she didn't have a sewing machine. Her husband could barely bring home enough to meet the basic needs, so where would they get a sewing machine?

We work to ensure that families living in this settlement receive their rights as citizens. We helped them obtain ration cards and caste-income certificates. We also provided some loans.

Our dear friend, Indra Modi, along with Dimpleben, visited us to see our work. At that time, our worker Rajnibhai suggested that we could help Puja by providing her with a sewing machine, which would benefit her greatly.

Indrabhai listened to this and said he would help her get a sewing machine. He then provided Puja with a machine.

After about three months, Puja had to go back to Bidaj, and I met her again. She was happy. She was earning 300 to 500 rupees a day from her stitching work. She said, "Now I don’t have to ask my family for money to run the household. I save too. Whenever I need to go somewhere or buy something, I have money in my hands, and I don’t have to argue. I can make my own decisions."

What a powerful statement Puja made. We are so happy to have been a part of her journey.

સ્ત્રી સશક્તિકરણ આ શબ્દનો ઉપયોગ હવે ઘણો થવા માંડ્યો છે. 

ત્યારે સવાલ થાય સશક્તિકરણ એટલે શું?

શું ઘરની બહાર નીકળી નોકરી કરવી એ સશક્તિકરણ? પુરુષોની સાથે ખભે થી ખભે મેળવી ચાલવું એ સશક્તિકરણ?

મારી જેમ અનેક લોકો આને સશક્તિકરણ નથી માનતા પણ દરેક સ્ત્રી પોતાની રીતે પોતાના દરેક નિર્ણય લઈ શકે તે સાચુ સશક્તિકરણ.. 

પોતાના નિર્ણય લેનાર પુજાને હમણાં મળવાનું થયું. એની ઉંમર બહુ મોટી નહીં. કદાચ પચીસી પણ નથી વટાવી એણે. આમ એ ડીસાની ને લગ્ન કરી એ ખેડાના બીડજ માં આવી. પતિ ખેત મજૂરી કરે ને એના પર ઘર ચાલે. પૂજા પણ લગ્ન પછી મજૂરીએ જતી. પણ પછી દિકરી આવી. ઝીણકીને મૂકીને જવા મન ન માને...

એને સિલાઈ કામ આવડે. પૂજાની મમ્મીએ એ શીખવાડેલું. પણ મશીન એની પાસે નહીં. પતિ તો માંડ બે ટંક ચાલે એટલું રળી લાવે ત્યાં મશીન ક્યાંથી લાવે.

આ વસાહતમાં રહેતા પરિવારોને નાગરિક તરીકે અધિકારો મળે તે માટે અમે કામ કરીએ. રેશનકાર્ડ ને જાતિ - આવકના દાખલા અમે કઢાવ્યા. કેટલાકને લોન પણ આપી. 

અમારા આ કાર્યને જોવા અમારા પ્રિયજન ઈન્દ્ર મોદી અમારા ડિમ્પલબેન સાથે ગયા. ને એ વખતે અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈએ પૂજાને મશીન લાવવામાં મદદ કરીએ તો એને ઘણો ફાયદો થાયની વાત કરી. 

આ વાત ઈન્દ્રભાઈએ સાંભળી ને એમણે મશીન લઈ આપવામાં મદદ કરવા કહ્યું. એ પછી પૂજાને મશીન લાવી આપ્યું. 

મશીન આપ્યાના ત્રણેક મહિના પછી પાછા બીડજ જવાનું થયું ને પૂજાને પાછા મળ્યા. એ રાજી રાજી. રોજનું 300 થી  500નું કામ એ કરી લે છે. એ કહે, 'ઘર ચલાવવ હવે મારા ઘરવાળા પાસે પૈસા માંગવા નથી પડતા. બચત પણ કરુ છું. ક્યાંક જવું હોય કશું લેવું હોય તો હાથમાં પૈસા હોય તો પછી બીજી માથાકૂટ નહીં. હું મારા નિર્ણયો જાતે લઈ શકુ છું.'

કેવી મોટી વાત પૂજાએ કરી. અમે પૂજાના રાજીપામાં નિમિત્ત બન્યા એની ખુશી..

આદરણીય ઈન્દ્ર મોદી નો ઘણો આભાર. તેઓ વર્ષોથી અમારી સાથે સંકળાઈને જે મદદ કરે છે એ માટે હરખ...

This was said smilingly by Geetaben, who runs her small grocery store at Mahisagar's Jetpur.

The families of  Bajaniya stay in bigger houses. Geetaben believes that even if she has a small shop , she can have good business there. Our relationship with all these families is for years. Vinodbhai and Kantaben, our associates from Mahisagar, have always desired & dreamt of a better life for these families. They always thought of which business would help the villagers to earn more. They would also advise the villagers accordingly and also ask them to apply for a loan from VSSM &  KRShroff Foundation.  

It is because of such dedicated associates that we have been able to cater to the needs of 8200 such families and make them self-sufficient & independent.  Geetaben's daily trade is good. Her wish is to repay the present loan first and then take a bigger loan for a bigger grocery store.

To all whom we have given the loans to, they have started to dream big. We can see & feel this clearly.. We only wish that all be happy  and also wish & pray that Geetaben's dreams are also fulfilled

મહિસાગરના જેતપુરમાં રહેતા ગીતાબહેનને ઘરમાં કરેલી પોતાની નાનકડી દુકાન બતાવતા મર્માળુ હસીને કહ્યું.

જેતપુરમાં બજાણિયા પરિવારોનું ફળિયું મોટુ. જો નાનકડી દુકાન થાય તો ત્યાં વકરો સારો થાય એવી ગીતાબહેનની લાગણી.

આ બધા પરિવારો સાથે અમારો નાતો વર્ષોનો.. વળી મહિસાગરના અમારા કાર્યકર વિનોદભાઈ અને કાંતાબહેન બેય અમારા કરતાંય આ પરિવારો વધારે સુખી કેવી રીતે થાય તેના સપના સેવે. ફલાણો ધંધો કરો તો પૈસા વધુ મળશે જેવી શીખામણો આપે ને શીખામણ પછી KRSF અને VSSM માંથી લોન આપે. 

આવા સંનિષ્ઠ કાર્યકરોની ઘગશના લીધે જ અમે ગીતાબહેન જેવા 8200 પરિવારોને લોન આપી પગભર કરી શક્યા છીએ.. 

ગીતાબહેનનો દૈનિક વકરો સારો એવો થઈ જાય છે. એમની ઈચ્છા હાલમાં લીધેલી લોન પતાવી વધુ મોટી લોન લઈને કરિયાણા સહિતની મોટી દુકાન કરવાની છે..

અમે જેટલા પણ વ્યક્તિઓને લોન આપવામાં નિમિત્ત બન્યા છીએ એ બધા સપના જોતા થઈ ગયા છે એ સ્પષ્ટ જણાઈ રહ્યું છે.

બસ સૌ સુખી થાય એવી શુભભાવના... ને ગીતાબહેનનું સ્વપ્ન પણ ફળે એમ પણ ઈચ્છીએ...

Badal, you have a rickshaw. Why don't you talk about it ?

Badal shied away and with a nod of head said no.

If you don't speak how will you get passengers for your rickshaw ?

He smiled & turned his head away.

How can anyone be so shy ? I was a bit surprised.  I observed that Badal had tied a handkerchief to his head? 

I asked him whether he is the Son-in-Law of this place ?

He smiled & said yes by nodding his head.

Dharanath, who was standing across and replying to all my questions to Badal came forward.

I asked Dharanath about Badal. Whose Son-in-Law he is ? Why doesn't he speak a word ?

Dharanath said Badal is his son-in-law and he is not speaking because of his presence. What a way to show respect !! In fact this respect is observed in the entire juggler (madari) community. The youngsters will not speak much when elders are around.

This talk is about a village in Kheda District called Kapadvanj. A big community of jugglers stay there. They are not educated. Snake charmer's work has stopped. Astrology work in saint's clothes also is not very popular. They work hard but since they have not done labour job for many generations, they are not used to it.

We encouraged this community to do some independent work. In this Kapadvanj village we first gave loans to 9 people and then  to 17 more. Our dedicated associate  Rajnibhai identified these people & encouraged them to do small businesses. Dharanathbhai from the community also played an important role. He asked us to give loan to his son-in-law for buying a rickshaw. He said that his son-in-law is still young and if he stays in the village & learn business it will be good for the family.  Since we now knew why Badal does not speak, we requested Dharanath to stay away from Badal & then we asked Badal how his business is going. He said he earns enough to pay the instalment of the finance loan & VSSM loan that he has taken. He is able to do business of Rs 800- Rs900 per day. 

With the blessings of elders the young ones settle down faster. Elders also must give freedom to the youngsters for the families to become stronger. Our best wishes to Badal for his success.

'બાદલ તારી રીક્ષા છે તો તું વાત કરને!'

મારા સવાલ સામે બાદલ જરા શરમાઈ ગયો ને એણે મોંઢુ હલાવી ના પાડી. 

'અરે તુ બોલતો નથી તો તારી રીક્ષામાં મુસાફરો કેવી રીતે આવે છે?'

એ મલક્યો ને ઊંધુ ફરી ગયો.. 

કોઈ વ્યક્તિ આટલું શરમાય? મને જરા નવાઈ લાગી. ત્યાં મને બાદલના માથે બાંધેલો રૃમાલ દેખાણો. 

'તુ અહીંયાનો જમાઈ છે?'

એ ફરી હસ્યો ને મોંઢુ હલાવી હા પાડી..

ત્યાં થોડે દૂર ઊભેલા ને બાદલને પુછાતા મારા પ્રત્યેક પ્રશ્નનો જવાબ આપતા ધારાનાથ આવી પહોંચ્યા. મે એમને, 

'આ કોનો જમાઈ છે જરાય બોલતો નથી.' એવું પુછ્યું જવાબમાં એમણે કહ્યું, 'મારા જમાઈ છે. હું ઊભો છુ ને એટલે...'

કેવી આમાન્યા.. આમ તો મદારી સમાજ આખો આવી મર્યાદા જાળવે. સસરા કે ઘરના વડિલોની સામે કારણવગર બોલવાનું જમાઈ ટાળે. 

વાત છે ખેડાના કપડવંજની. મદારી પરિવારોની મોટી વસાહત. ભણતર આ વસાહતમાં રહેનાર યુવાનોમાં ઝાઝુ નહીં. સાપના ખેલ તો બંધ થયા. સાધુ બાવાના વેશમાં જ્યોતિષ જોવાનું કામ પણ ઝાઝુ ચાલે નહીં. મહેનત મજૂરી સૌ વળગ્યા. પણ હાથમજૂરીના કામો પેઢીઓમાંથી કોઈએ કરેલા નહીં તે એ બહુ ફાવે નહીં.

અમે મદારી પરિવારોને સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરવા પ્રેરીયે. તે કપડવંજની મદારી વસાહતમાં 9 લોકોએ પ્રથમ ને પછી બીજા 17  વ્યક્તિઓને અમારા કર્મઠ કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈએ લોન લઈને નાના મોટા ધંધા કરવા ઉતેજન આપ્યું. તેમાં વસાહતના આગેવાન ધારાનાથભાઈએ પણ મહત્વની ભૂમિકા ભજવી. 

ધારાનાથે પોતાના જમાઈને રીક્ષા માટે લોન અપાવી. 

ધારાનાથ કહે, 'જમાઈ નાના છે નજર સામે રહે તો ઠીક રહે ને ધંધો શીખી જાય તો એમનું એ રળી ખાય.'

બાદલનું ન બોલવાનું હવે સમજાયું અમે ધારાનાથને આઘા જવા કહ્યું એ થોડા ખસ્યા પછી બાદલે કહ્યું, રીક્ષાથી એ સારુ કમાઈ લે છે. અમારો હપ્તો ઉપરાંત ફાયનાન્સમાંથી લીધેલી લોનનો હપ્તો પણ એ ભરી શકે છે ને ઘર પણ ચાલે છે. ટૂંકમાં દૈનિક 800 થી 1000 નો વકરો એ કરવા લાગ્યો.

વડીલોની છત્રછાયામાં બાળકો નિશ્ચિત થઈ જાય. જો કે વડિલોએ પણ બાળકોને ભયમુક્ત વાતાવરણ આપવું પડે. બેય એકબીજાને સમજે તો પરિવાર મજબૂત થાય એ નક્કી.. ખેર બાદલ ખુબ સુખી થાય એવી શુભભાવના...

 "We do not like to ask for help anymore. We get harassed by the locals & also the police. We do small labour work. However, in Bagpotra we have not done any work. To ask for money becomes more difficult. We are snake charmers. No labour is involved in that. We put on clothes of a sadhu and begged. People started accusing us based on our caste. We are helpless and do not know what to do further to survive ".

Why don't you do business ? we asked

"Snake charmers do not know any business"

You are quite fluent in speaking. You can easily do business. We will give you funds.

But if we are not able to repay then ?

You will be able to. Don't worry. From your community select a few who have some business sense. We will give them loans for different small businesses.

Our colleague from Kheda , Shri Rajnibhai said this to Dharanathbhai , a snake charmer. After that nine people from that community applied for a loan for doing business. Rajnibhai helped in identifying the businesses for these nine people. Loan was granted to them. 

One amongst them was Champaben. She set up a small outlet of sweetmeats,biscuits. We gave her a loan of Rs 30,000/-. Every month all are repaying their instalments.

These families of snake charmers were at the cross-roads of survival. Their snake charmer business had virtually closed. We felt that the only solution for their survival was that they must do small business and for that we were ready to help. We had tried for several years but they were afraid of taking even a small loan of Rs 5,000/-. That's when Dharanathbhai showed courage.

When we asked Champaben how was the business. She replied that life is much better now as compared to before. No more hassles of moving from villages to villages and staying in garbage like condition. Everyday she is able to sell goods worth Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000. Seeing these nine people succeed, another seventeen people applied for a loan. We are happy . Helping such families is always our priority.

Our respected Shri Pratulbhai Shroff of Dr K R Shroff Foundation  helped us greatly in this venture of giving loans. So far 6800 families have taken benefit of this scheme and have become independent. Wishing happiness to all.

'આ માંગવાનું હવે ગમતું નથી. લોકોની અને પોલીસની હેરાનગતિ એમાં ઘણી વધી છે. છુટક મજૂરી અમે કરીએ, પણ બાપગોતરમાં આમ જુઓ તો અમે મજુરી કરી નથી એટલે એ અઘરુ પડે. પહેલાં સાપના ખેલ પર નભતા એમાં મજુરી ક્યાં આવે?  અમે નાથપંથી એટલે સાધુવેશે હવે અમે યાચવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. પણ લોકો એમાં જાતભાતના આરોપ લગાડે. શું કરવું કશું સમજાતું નથી.'

'તમે ધંધો કરો.'

'ધંધો અને મદારી?'

'તમે બોલવામાં સરસ છો.. ઘંઘો આરામથી કરી શકો. અમે પૈસા આપીશું.'

'પણ પૈસા ન ભરાણા તો?'

'ભરાશે તમે ચિંતા ન કરો. તમે વસાહતમાંથી થોડા લોકો કે જેમનામાં ધંધાની સુઝબૂઝ હોય એવાને પસંદ કરો અમે એમને અલગ અલગ વ્યવસાય માટે લોન આપીશું.'

ખેડાના અમારા કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈએ કપડવંજમાં રહેતા મદારી ધારાનાથ ભાઈને આ કહ્યું ને પછી નવ લોકોએ અલગ અલગ વ્યવસાય માટે લોન લીધી. નવ વ્યવસાય ક્યા એ શોધવામાંય રજનીભાઈએ મદદ કરી.

ચંપાબહેન એમાંના એક જેમણે ગોળી, બિસ્કીટ વેચવાની નાનકડીલદુકાન આમ તો ગલ્લો નાખ્યો. 30,000 લોન પેટે અમે આપ્યા. દર મહિને આ વસાહતમાંથી લોકો નિયમીત હપ્તો ભરી નાખે. 

મદારી પરિવારો સાપના ખેલ કરી પેટિયું રળતા. એ ધંધો તો બંધ થયો. હવે શુંનો પ્રશ્ન મોં વકાસીને અમની સામે ઊભેલો. અમને સમાધાન એ ઉદ્યોગ સાહસીક બને એમાં જ લાગતું. વર્ષોથી એ માટે પ્રયત્નો કરતા. પણ પાંચ હજાર લેતાય એમને બીક લાગે. ત્યારે ધારાનાથે હીંમત કરી.

ચંપાબહેનને મળીને ધંધો કેવો ચાલે એ પુ્છયું તો કહે, 'ગામે ગામ રઝળપાટ કરવામાંથી છુટકારો મળ્યો. કેવા ગંધવેડામાં પડ્યા રેતા. હવે હખ છે. રોજનો અઢી ત્રણ હજારનો વકરો થઈ જાય.'

નવ વ્યક્તિઓ ધંધામાં સુખી થયા એ જોઈને બીજા 17 વ્યક્તિઓએ પણ નાનો ધંધો નાખવા લોન માંગી..

અમે તો રાજી છીએ. આવા પરિવારોને મદદ કરવી એ તો અમારી પ્રાથમિકતા.

 "We aspired to expand our business of bamboo basketry but lacked the required capital. We are five brothers, and you provided each of us with an interest-free loan of Rs. 20000. We borrowed another Rs. 1 lac from a private lender at a very high-interest rate. With the money, we went to Mumbai to purchase bamboo from the wholesale market. The cost of bamboo in Mumbai was comparatively cheaper, and Rs. 2.20 lacs enabled us to buy a lot of bamboos. Eventually, we borrowed another Rs. 1 lac from you to pay off the private lender's loan. It was a risk we had taken for the first time; we are glad everything worked out well. Apart from the regular baskets, we have also begun making bamboo ladders and other construction-related materials, which are in great demand, and our business is good." Sureshbhai  Pilucha village in Banasknatha's Vadgama spoke about his business expansion after availing interest-free loan under VSSM's Swavlamban initiative.

"Agreed that your business has grown, but how has it impacted your happiness quotient?" we inquired.

"Initially, we used to rent the vehicle required to ferry our goods; now we have bought a chakra to carry our products. We also purchased a motorbike and keep Rs. 5000 for daily expenses."

We all have dreams, and realizing those dreams does need some support. We hope to be that support. A small loan has significantly impacted Sureshbhai and his brothers' lives. Sureshbhai aspires to build a big store in Palanpur or Vadgam to help display and sell his products/creations. We pray for his continued success.

Since its launch, the Swavlamban initiative has supported  6500 families. And lives of numerous families have changed for the better. We are grateful to all our well-wishing donors for their encouraging support.

"વાંસનો ધંધો મોટો કરવાની હોંશ તો હતી પણ પાસે પૈસા નહોતા. અમે પાંચ ભાઈઓ તમે અમને પાંચેયને વીસ-વીસ હજારની લોન આપી. આ 1.20 લાખ ભેગા કરી અમે મુંબઈ ગયા અને ત્યાંથી 2.20 લાખના વાંસ ખરીદ્યા. બીજા લાખ અમે વ્યાજવા લીધેલા. પણ મુંબઈથી વાંસ અમને પ્રમાણમાં સસ્તો મળ્યો. જો કે 1 લાખ વ્યાજવા લીધેલા એનું વ્યાજ મારી નાખે એવું હતું. તમારી પાસે એ વ્યાજમાંથી મુક્ત થવા બીજી પચાસ -પચાસ હજારની લોન લીધી. 

અમે પહેલીવાર આવડુ મોટુ સાહસ કર્યું હતું પણ અમે સફળ રહ્યા. વાંસમાંથી પહેલાં સૂડલાં ટોપલા જ બનાવતા હવે અમે સીડી, સેન્ટીંગ ભરવા માટેનો સામાન વગેરે બનાવવા માંડ્યા. હવે તો ઘણા ઓર્ડર મળવા માંડ્યા. ધંધો પણ વધ્યો."

બનાસકાંઠાના વડગામના પીલુચાના સુરેશભાઈએ હસતા હસતા વાત કરી.

અમે પુછ્યું, "ધંધો વધ્યો એ તો સાચુ પણ તમારા સુખમાં વધારાનું શું ઉમેરાયું."

"ઓર્ડર નો સામાન ઉતારવા ભાડેથી વાહન લાવતો પણ એના કરતા હવે ઘરનું સાધન થઈ ગયું. મે છકડો રીક્ષા લીધી.  એ સિવાય ક્યાંક સગાવહાલાના ત્યાં જવું હોય તો બાઈક ખરીદી લીધું. બે પાંચ રૃપિયા હવે હાથવગા પણ રહે છે. "

નાનકડી લોન સુરેશભાઈ અને એમના ભાઈઓના જીવનમાં બદલાવ લાવવા મહત્વની બની. સ્વપ્ન દરેક માણસ જુએ પણ એ સ્વપ્ન પૂર્ણ કરવા એને ટેકાની જરૃર પડે. બસ આ ટેકો આપવાનું આપણે કરી શકીએ તો ઘણું.  અમે એ કર્યું ને સુરેશભાઈની જીંદગી બદલાઈ એમનું સ્વપ્ન પાનલપુર કે વડગામમાં મોટી દુકાન કરવાની છે જ્યાં એ પોતે બનાવેલો સામાન વેચી શકે. એમના સ્વપ્ન ફળે એ માટે ઘણી શુભેચ્છાઓ. 

અત્યાર સુધી 6500 થી વધુ પરિવારોને આ રીતે લોન આપી છે. જેમાંથી ઘણાની જીંદગી બદલાઈ ગઈ છે. આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર સૌ સ્વજનોના અમે આભારી છીએ.

Mittal Patel meets Lalabhai

Every few days, I receive a call from Lalabhai from Dakor. “Ben, how are you doing? Do plan to come to Dakor for Ranchodrai’s darshan,” he would tell me during every call.

Lalabhai is a very hard-working individual. Although his early childhood was spent in a shanty, he had pledged not to let poverty keep him in its clutches. Lalabhai went to school until 10th grade, after which he dropped out.

His mother earned a living through selling fashion accessories, and he, too, had taken up the same trade. The business grew well, and he was required to rent two shops and build a small cabin near the Dakor temple.

The income enabled him to build a pucca house.

Two years back, Lalabhai suffered a heart attack; his treatment at a private hospital washed off all his savings. Usually, Lalabhai stocked his goods on credit from as far as Mumbai. But after the heart attack, his business collapsed, living no capital to buy goods.

After learning about their situation, we loaned him and his son some money. The amount was kept as a deposit at the merchant’s they bought the goods to restart their business. It has been quite a while since we loaned them the money. “Things are back on track,” Lalabhai had called to share.

I had the opportunity to visit his store on my recent trip to Dakor. I was astonished at the volume of goods stored in his shop. The wholesellers had put the same old trust in him; as a result, they had stocked Rs. 10 lac worth of goods. Around 200 vendors buy goods from Lalabhai.

“I now want to work in a way that I become instrumental in the happiness of others.” We hope Lalabhai succeeds and accomplishes his goal.

ડાકોરથી લાલાભાઈનો ફોન દર થોડા દિવસે આવે. બેન તમે મજામાં.. ડાકોર આવો રણછોડરાયજીના દર્શનાર્થે એવું એ ભાવથી કહે...

લાલાભાઈ બહુ મહેનતુ વ્યક્તિ. ઝૂંપડામાં જન્મેલા પણ આખી જીંદગી હું ઝૂંપડાંમાં નહીં રહુ એવો એમણે નિર્ધાર કરેલો. એમના મા ટોપલામાં કાંસકીઓ, બોરિયા બકલ વેચવાનું કરતા. લાલાભાઈ દસ ચોપડી ભણ્યા પછી પરિસ્થિતિના લીધે ભણી ન શક્યા. એમણે પણ કટલરી વેચવાનું શરૃ કર્યું ને ધીમે ધીમે સરસ ઘંઘો સેટ કર્યો. બે દુકાન ભાડેથી લીધી અને એક નાનકડું કેબીન પણ રણછોડરાયજીના મંદિર તરફ એમણે બનાવ્યું.

પાક્કુ ઘર થયું. ટૂંકમાં એ બે પાંદડે થયા. 

બે વર્ષ પહેલાં અચાનક લાલાભાઈને હાર્ટ એટેક આવ્યો. ખાનગી હોસ્પીટલમાં સારવાર ને ખર્ચો ઘણો થયો. બચત ખતમ થઈ ગઈ. આમ તો દુકાનમાં ભરાવવાનો સામાન એ ઉધાર લાવતા. એમની શાખ એટલી સારી કે મુંબઈના વેપારી એમને સામાન આપતા. પણ હાર્ટ એટેક પછી બધુ સાવ ઠપ્પ ગયું.એમની પાસે સામાન લાવવા મૂડી ન રહી. 

એમની સ્થિતિનો અમને ખ્યાલ આવ્યો ને અમે એમને ને એમના દિકરાને લોન આપી. આ લોનને વેપારી પાસે થાપણ પેટે મૂકી ને ઉધારમાં ફરી સામાન લાવી એમણે  ધંધો શરૃ કર્યો. 

લોન આપ્યા ને વખત થયો. હવે બધુ બરાબર સેટ છે એવું એ ફોન પર કહેતા.

હમણાં ડાકોર ગઈ ત્યારે એમના ત્યાં ખાસ જવાનું થયું. એમની બે દુકાનો જોઈને દંગ થઈ જવાયું.

વેપારીઓએ ફરી એમના પર ભરોસો કર્યો એટલે એમની દુકાનમાં દસ લાખનો સામાન ભર્યો હતો. 200 જેટલા ફરિયા એમની પાસેથી સામાન લઈ જાય..

હાર્ટ એટેક પછી એમણે કહ્યું, હવે મારે લોકોના સુખમાં નિમીત્ત બની શકાય એવા કાર્યો કરવા છે.. બસ લાલાભાઈની એ ભાવના સફળ થાય એવી શુભેચ્છા આપી...

લાલાભાઈ જેવા વ્યક્તિઓને ફેર બેઠા કરવા મદદ કરનાર અમારા સ્વજનોનો આભાર... એમની મદદથી  આવા કાર્યો થાય...

Mittal Patel meets Bhanuben 

We will give a handcart to Bhanuben and some capital to start a business selling vegetables.

"Who is Bhanuben? What is her age?" I asked obvious questions when one of our team members mentioned the above.

"Bhanuben is here at our office; let us meet her," he responded.

"A very frail-looking lady with an equally frail voice entered my office.

"Do you know the business of selling vegetables?" I asked.

"My husband was a vegetable vendor; I would accompany him sometimes. Hence, I know certain things but will learn on the job, Didi!"

"What work do you do at present?"

"I work as domestic help, but an  income of Rs. 3000 is insufficient to feed my two children and parents-in-law," Bhanuben responded. 

"What went wrong with your husband?"

"Cancer. My husband was addicted to gutka masala; he would not listen to any of my pleas to stop eating the gutka. As a result, he was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth. We got him operated on, but the doctor said he would never be cancer free because cancer had spread in the body. My husband heard the doctors say this and committed suicide." Bhanuben was emotional by the time she finished this statement. She would be 27ish years old, and her husband passed away two years ago.

"You re-married?"

"I don't want to marry again. I want to focus on raising my children well and educating them. I want to live for them."

"what difference will a handcart bring to your life?

"It will make a difference, Didi. I don't have money to buy a handcart. If I get into selling vegetables, I will make a decent income. My house is a kuccha one-room house with a leaking roof; my father-in-law remains ill. I question why god has granted me so much pain. I don't have parents, just a sister as a family. Whenever possible, sends Rs. 500-1000. She is my strength and support. But I am tired now; if I had no children to look after, I too would have decided to end my life." Tears rolled down Bhanuben's eyes.

I am astonished by the sheer negligence of people with addictions towards their families.

"Didi, Hirenbhai tells me that you also operate a hostel. I wish to enrol my children into it." The life lessons Bhanuben has learned under her given  circumstances 

A handcart was given to Bhanuben while we worked towards getting her a proper house.

"Will God give me happiness?" on her way out, she comes back from the main gate to ask me this.

આપણે ભાનુબહેનને શાકભાજીનો વેપાર કરવા લારી આપીશું ને ધંધો શરૃ કરવા થોડા રૃપિયા પણ...

અમારા કાર્યકરે આ વાત કહી એટલે સાહજીક થયું ભાનુબહેનની પસંદગી કેમ? એમની ઉંમર શું?

જવાબમાં ભાનુબહેન આવ્યા છે મળી લઈએ એવું કાર્યકરે કહ્યું ને, ભાનુબહેન મારા કાર્યલયમાં આવ્યા. શરીરે દુબળા, અવાજ પણ સાવ ઝીણો..

મે પુછ્યું, તમને શાકભાજીનો વેપાર આવડે છે. 

મારા ઘરવાળા એ કરતા હું ક્યારેક એમની સાથે જતી. એટલે થોડું ફાવે છે પણ કરી લઈશ દીદી.

હાલ કામ શું કામ કરો?

કચરા પોતા કરવા જવું છું. પણ એમાં ઝાઝુ મળતું નથી. 3000 જેવું મળે એમાં મારા બે બાળકો અને સાસુ સસરાનું પુરુ કરવાનું. થોડું મુશ્કેલ થાય છે. ઘરવાળાને શું થયેલું?કેન્સર.. વ્યસન કરતા. હું ઘણું ના પાડતી પણ એ માને નહીં. મોંઢાનું કેન્સર થયું. ઓપરેશન કરવાનું હતું. એ વખતે ડોક્ટરે મને કહ્યું, ઓપરેશન પછી પણ એ ઝાઝુ નહીં કાઢે. મૂળ કેન્સર પ્રસરી ગયું છે. મારા ઘરવાળા આ સાંભળી ગયા ને એમણે આત્મહત્યા કરી..

આટલું કહેતા ભાનુબહેન ઢીલા થઈ ગયા..  એમની ઉંમર છવ્વીસ કે અઠ્ઠાવીસની હશે.. બે વર્ષ પહેલાં પતિ ગુજરી ગયા. 

તમે બીજા લગ્ન?

ના દીદી હવે નથી કરવા.. મારા બે બાળકો છે એમને ભણવવા છે. એમના માટે જીવવું છે.. લારીથી જીંદગીમાં ફરક પડશે? પડશે દીદી.. મારી પાસે લારી ખરીદવા પૈસા નથી  પણ લારી મળે તો કામની સાથે સાથે શાકભાજીનો વેપાર થાય તો આવક વધે.. હાલ ઘર પણ ઠેકાણા વગરનું છે. એક રૃમ છે. ચોમાસામાં પતરાંમાંથી પાણી પડે. ઘરમાં બિમાર સસરા.. ક્યારેક થાય ભગવાને આટલું દુઃખ કેમ દીધું. પિયરમાં પણ એક બહેન સિવાય કોઈ નથી. મા-બાપ પણ નથી.. બહેન ક્યારેક 500 -1000 મોકલી આપે. હીંમત એ ઘણી આપે. પણ થાકી ગઈ છું. બાળકો ન હોત ને તો મે પણ એમના જેવો જ રસ્તો અપનાવી લીધો હોત...

આટલું કહેતા ભાનુબહેનની આંખોમાંથી બોર જેવડાં આંસુ વહેવા માંડ઼્યા. સાંત્વના તો આપવાની જ હોય..

પણ વ્યસ્ન કરનાર વ્યક્તિઓ પરિવારની કેમ ચિંતા નહીં કરતા હોય એ પ્રશ્ન હંમેશાં થાય..

ભાનુબહેનને કહ્યું, દીદી મને હીરેનભાઈએ કહ્યું કે તમે હોસ્ટેલ પણ ચલાવો તે મારા બે બાળકોને હું ત્યાં મુકવા ઈચ્છુ છુ.... 

કેવી સરસ સમજણ કદાચ સમયની થપાટે તેમને આ બધુ સમજાવ્યું.એમનું ઘર સરખુ કરવાનું પણ કરી આપીશું.. ને લારી તો આપવાની જ હોય...

એ મારા કાર્યલયમાંથી બહાર નીકળી રહ્યા હતા દરવાજે પહોંચી પાછા વળીને અમણે કહ્યું, 

ભગવાન મને સુખ આપશે?
