Teenaben Ravan was able to get a house in Deesa under Rajiv Gandhi Away Yojna. With the help of Pravinbhai Maadi and Nagarpalika, Teenaben had to pay the Rs 10, 000/- , which she borrowed through the interest free loans that VSSM gives to NT/DNT communities.

Mahesh (VSSM worker) clicked the picture and Teenaben told Mahesh to make a copy of it and give it to her the earliest. Today, Mahesh calls me with a request to send the picture clicked with Teenaben. He informed me that Teenaben has been calling him several times a day and  now, he is hesitant to even go to the locality that Teenaben lives , with the fear that she will catch him and ask for the copy of the picture.

Unlike Mahesh, I only had laughter in my part. Everyone has pictures of their family members in their house and to get a place in that is truly humbling.

VSSM facilitates applications for 6 Vansfoda families to procure aid to buy livelihood kits …

The efforts led by VSSM have enabled 10 families belonging to Vansfoda community and living in Patan’s Ranuj village acquire residential plots. For the families to receive government aid for the construction of their homes it is necessary that the applications are attached with a consent letter from the Panchayat ‘permitting these families to build homes’ on the allotted plots. Since we do not like the families face any complications in future,  the team of VSSM makes sure all the necessary permits are taken and procedures are completed. Our team member Mohanbhai applied for these permits and along with that he also applied for assistance for purchasing livelihood aids  from Jilla Udhyog Bhavan. 

VSSM tries to be helpful to the nomadic families for the entire gamut of  challenges they face and the settlements in Jesda, Deesa, Ranuj, Vijapur etc are examples of VSSM’s holistic efforts.

વાંસફોડા પરિવારોને સાધનિક સહાય મળે એ માટે vssm દ્વારા ૬ પરિવારોની અરજી કરવામાં આવી.

પાટણ જીલ્લાના રણુંજ ગામમાં રહેતાં વાંસફોડા સમુદાયના ૧૦ પરિવારોને vssmના પ્રયત્નથી રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ ફાળવાયા. આ પરિવારોને મકાન સહાય મળે એ માટે ગ્રામપંચાયતની બાંધકામ માટેની પરવાનગીની ચિઠ્ઠી અરજી સાથે જોડવી ફરજીયાત છે. vssmના કાર્યકરો તમામ કામ ભવિષ્યને ધ્યાનમાં રાખીને કરે જેથી આ પરિવારોને ભવિષ્યમાં પણ કોઈ તકલીફ ના પડે. કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ પરવાનગી ચિઠ્ઠી માટે અરજી કરી સાથે સાથે આ પરિવારો હાથલારી પર વ્યવસાય કરી શકે એ માટે એમણે ૬ પરિવારોની જીલ્લા ઉદ્યોગ કેન્દ્રમાંથી સાધનિક સહાય મળે એ માટે પણ અરજી કરી. એક પરિવાર vssmના સંપર્કમાં આવે તો એ પરિવારને સંપૂર્ણ રીતે મદદરૂપ થવાનું vssmના કાર્યકરો કરે. જેસડા, ડીસા, રણુજ, વિજાપુર વગેરે જેવી કેટલીયે વસાહતો એનું ઉદાહરણ છે.

The collapse of rural economies have triggered the most profound and yet largely unrecognised rural-urban migration in our country. Amongst many other poor and marginalised  communities also present are the nomadic communities, whose traditional occupations gradually became obsolete and they have no other means but to work as labourers or resort to begging. The nomadic communities as such do not belong to any village but their occupation largely depended on rural communities  so with the rural population moving towards the cities the nomadic communities also turned towards the urban regions and  settled in the various slums and ghettoes or makeshift shanties on the roadsides. In cities also these communities struggle to find work on daily basis and sustaining a family is a challenge.

Recently we happened to visit such families living in Rajkot and Morbi.  These families are struggling with their lives, making numerous rounds to the government offices for getting power, water, ration cards and various other entitlements. But as it happens no one listens to the pleas of the poor and powerless. When there are no guarantees of their where about who is going to hold their hands and help them earn a decent living, who loans money to such individuals and communities?

VSSM has supported such families in Rajkot and Morbi and we recently has a meeting with them. During the meeting they talked about the change they are experiencing in their lives because of their new business initiatives and what are their plans for future. The community here have a special liking for VSSM’s Kanubhai. They say " no one cares for them more than him, he is the one who stands by them in times of need. After he came to our settlements there has been 70% change in our standard of living, our addictions have also reduced, we are experiences new possibilities in life.”   Such honest feedbacks delights us. We feel, as an organisation we are inching closer to our goals.

ગામડાં ભાંગતા જાય છે. લોકોએ રોજગારીની શોધમાં શહેરોની વાટ પકડી છે. આવામાં વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો કે જેઓ પોતાનાં પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય અર્થે સદીઓથી ફરતા રહ્યા છે. જેમના વ્યવસાયો પણ સમાજ આધારિત હતા જે હવે પડી ભાંગ્યા છે, એમણે પણ શહેરોમાં આવીને વસવાટ કર્યો છે. આમ તો એમના કોઈ ગામ જ નથી અને વિચરણ એજ એમનું જીવન હતું એમાં શહેરોમાં હવે થોડા ઘણા અંશે એ સ્થાઈ થવાની કોશિશ કરે છે. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નાજુક છે. માંડ માંડ ગુજારો કરતાં આ પરિવારો પાસે બે ટંકનું ભેગું કરવું પણ મુશ્કેલ હોય છે આવામાં પોતાનું આવાસ તો કાયથી હોવાનું.. સડકો ઉપર, ગટરની બાજુમાં કે જ્યાં સામાન્ય રીતે કોઈને નડે નહી એવી જગ્યા પર આ પરિવારોએ પોતાના ડેરા-તંબુ નાખ્યાં છે.

આ દેશમાં આવા લાખો પરિવારો વસે છે. તાજેતરમાં રાજકોટ અને મોરબી શહેર અને તેના તાલુકા મથકોમાં રહેતાં આવા પરિવારો વચ્ચે જવાનું થયું. આ પરિવારો જીવવા માટે મહેનત કરે છે. વિવિધ સરકારી કચેરીમાં વીજળી, પાણી, રેશનકાર્ડ વગેરે જેવા પ્રશ્નો સાથે કેટલીયેવાર રજૂઆત કરી પણ કોઈ સાંભળવા તૈયાર નથી. આવામાં સ્વબળે ઉભા થવા આ પરિવારોએ બેંક પાસે જઈને ધિરાણ માંગ્યું કે, જેમાંથી નાનું – મોટુ પોતાને ગમતું કામ કરી આજીવિકા મેળવી શકાય પણ જેની પાસે પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો જ નથી અથવા આધારો છે પણ સરનામુ નથી - આજે અહિયાં તો કાલે બીજે ક્યાંય ડંગા સાથે ફર્યા કરવાનું એમને લોન કોણ આપે?

vssmએ આવા પરિવારોને વગર વ્યાજની લોન આપીને સ્વમાનભેર જીવન જીવી શકે એ માટે મદદરૂપ થવાનું કર્યું છે. હમણાં રાજકોટ જવાનું થયું એ વખતે લોન લીધેલા પરિવારો સાથે એક બેઠક થઇ(ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે) જેમાં એમણે લોન લીધા પછી જીવનમાં આવેલા હકારાત્મક ફેરફારની સાથે સાથે ભવિષ્યના આયોજનો સંદર્ભે વાત કરી...

vssmના એ વિસ્તારના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ માટે આ પરિવારોને અનહદ પ્રેમ છે. એ લોકો કહે છે એમ, કનુભાઈ અમારી વસ્તીમાં જે રીતે ફરે છે અમારા સુખ દુઃખમાં સાથે ઉભા રહે છે એ રીતે કોઈ ઉભું રહ્યું નથી. ના કોઈએ મદદ કરી છે. એમના આવવાથી અમારામાં ૭૦ ટકા ફેર પડી ગયો છે. વ્યસનપણ અમે બંધ કર્યા છે.. આ સાંભળ્યું ત્યારે ખુબ આનંદ થયો. vssmની સ્થાપનાના મૂળમાં આ વિગતો હતી જે સાકાર થઇ રહી છે.

Manibanagar is one of the suburbs of Kutchh’s Bhacahu. Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM operates a school for the children of nomadic families here while women come to learn tailoring at this center. After completion of the 3 month long  course four women proposed VSSM for a loan to buy sewing machines. VSSM lent Rs. 8,000 to each of these applicants.   They have bought the sewing machines and began earning from it and are paying a Rs. 700 EMI as well. There is a gradual change in their standard of living as well.

vssm દ્વારા વિચરતી જાતિના બહેનોને સિલાઈ મશીન ખરીદવા માટે લોન આપવામાં આવી.

કચ્છના ભચાઉના મણિબાનગરમાં આરતી ફાઉન્ડેશનની મદદથી વિચરતી જાતિના બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું કામ ચાલે છે. આ  સેન્ટર પર જ મણિબાનગરમાં રહેતી વિચરતી અને વંચિત જાતીઓની બહેનો સિલાઈકામ શીખવા આવે. ૩ મહિના સિલાઈકામ શીખવ્યા પછી ચાર બહેનોએ પોતાના ઘરે સિલાઈ મશીન ખરીદી સિલાઈ કામ શરુ કરવા માટે મશીન ખરીદવા માટે લોનની માંગણી કરી. આપણે પ્રત્યેક બહેનને રૂ.૮,૦૦૦ ની લોન આપી. બહેનો મશીન લાવી અને કામ શરુ કરી દીધું. એમણે લીધેલી લોનનો માસિક રૂ.૭૦૦ નો હપ્તો પણ આ બહેનો ભરે છે. એમનું જીવન ધોરણ પણ બદલાયું છે..

ફોટોમાં પોતાના સિલાઈ મશીન સાથે અમીનાબહેન, ભારતીબહેન, નાજીનાબહેન, હેતલબહેન કે જેમના સ્વપ્ન ઘરમાં પોતાના પતિને આર્થિક રીતે મદદરૂપ થવાનું છે.

VSSM’s pledge to make the nomadic communities debt free

Amidst one of the very posh localities of Ahmedabad called  Gulbai Tekra is nestled a large ghetto called Hollywood, a slum that  houses a large number of nomadic families. Most of these families are involved in the craft of making statues from plaster of paris. They are mainly Ganesha statues that are sold during the annual Ganapati Mahotsav.

Ratanben, her husband Dhulabhai, three daughters and one son stay in this slum. While one of daughters is married and lives in  her own home the other two daughters help their parents in making statues.  The couple’s only son  has just cleared his 10th grade. The statue making business is seasonal one requiring lot of pre-planning, lack of which results into a flop season and no earnings. The statues have to be prepared four months before the season approaches and requires substantial capital investment. The returns on which are only after the statues are sold off. For the rest of the year Ratanben sells cosmetics and imitation jewellery while the daughters work as household helps at houses in neighbourhood, the combined  incomes of which helps feed the family during the rest of the year. Such families do not have any savings to fall back on, requiring them to borrow money at  hefty interest rates from private money lenders or some relatives. Once the statues are sold and they have money on hand the debts are paid off.  Also since Dhulabhai doesn’t possess any other skill he needs to borrow money whenever some need arises. But they do remain trapped into a permanent cycle of debt. Even the family’s combined  income from all the occupations isn’t enough to allow them to save for the rainy day. Any emergency would mean borrowing money and incurring debt!!! That is how life goes on for this as well as many other families like them….

VSSM through its various initiatives is much involved with this community. VSSM’s Elaben has suggested to these families to work towards creating a corpus by borrowing money from relatives and VSSM (both interest free funds) and do a proper business this year. The loan  is to be repaid from the money that is earned from other occupations.  If need be work more and work harder. The aim will be to make good profit in this season. Ratanben grasped the matter well and took a loan of Rs. 20,000 from VSSM, brought Rs. 40,000 from her family members and created a fund of Rs. 60,000 to work with. Dhulabhai has began making statues and expects brisk sales this year. Ratanben’s expects making good profit since all the funds are interest free. 

"I want to educate my son well, get my daughters married without incurring further debt. We will be able to pay off the VSSM loan from the work I and my daughters do, so we will be saving Rs. 20,000 in this season itself!!” says a rather confident Ratanben.

વિચરતા પરિવારોને દેવા દેવામુક્ત કરવાનો vssmનો નિર્ધાર ...

રતનબહેન તેમના પતિ, ત્રણ દીકરી અને એક દીકરા સાથે અમદાવાદના ગુલબાઈ ટેકરા વિસ્તારમાં  રહે. એક દીકરી પરણીને સાસરે ગઈ અને દીકરાએ હમણાં ધો.૧૦ની પરીક્ષા આપી. બાકીની બે રતનબહેન અને તેમના પતિ ધુળાભાઈ મૂર્તિઓ બનવાનું કામ કરે છે પણ આ ધંધો સીઝનલ એટલે સિઝન બરાબર જાય એની તૈયારી પહેલેથી કરવી પડે. મૂડી રોકાણ કરવું પડે. સિઝનના ચાર મહિના પહેલાં સામાન લાવીને મૂર્તિ બનાવવાનું કામ શરુ કરી દેવું પડે. રતનબહેન મૂર્તિ બનાવવાની સીઝન ના હોય એ વખતે શૃંગાર પ્રસાધનો પણ વેચે. એટલે સીઝન સિવાય ગાડું ગબડ્યા કરે.

આ પરિવારનું આર્થિક પાસું એટલું મજબુત નહિ. આમ તો મૂર્તિ બનાવવાના કામમાં મળતર ખુબ હોય પણ એ માટે મૂડી રોકાણ સરખું કરવું પડે. બચત તો હોય નહિ. એટલે સીઝનમાં મૂર્તિ બનાવવા માટે તગડાં વ્યાજે અને પોતાના સગા- સંબંધી જેમની સ્થિતિ ઠીક છે એમની પાસેથી ઉછીના પૈસા લાવે અને સીઝન પત્યા પછી થયેલી આવકમાંથી દેવું ચૂકતે કરે.. પણ પછી તો રતનબહેન અને એમની દીકરીઓ ઘર કામ કરીને જે લાવે એમાંથી જ ખાવાનું. ધુળાભાઈને બીજા કામની આવડત નહિ અને મજુરી બહુ ફાવે નહિ એટલે જરૂર પડે પાછા દેવું કરીને પૈસા લાવવાના અને આમ દેવાના બોજ તળે દબાતા જાય અને સિઝનમાં દેવું ઉતારી દેવાનું. આ નિત્યક્રમ વર્ષોથી ચાલે...

આ પરિવારો સાથે આપણે કામ કરીએ.. દરેક મૂર્તિ બનાવનારના ઘરની ઉપર જણાવી એવી જ વાત. ઇલાબહેને એક રસ્તો કાઢ્યો અને વ્યાજવા પૈસા લાવ્યા વગર કામ કરવાનું કેટલાક પરિવારો સાથે નક્કી કર્યું. ‘સગા- સંબંધી તો વ્યાજ વગર પૈસા આપે એટલે એમની પાસેથી મૂડી ભેગી કરો અને vssmમાંથી રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ની લોન લો અને દર મહીને તમારાં પરિવારના અન્ય સભ્યો કમાય છે એ vssmની લોનનો હપ્તો ભરે.. જરૂર પડે એક કામ વધારે કરો.. પણ આ સિઝનમાં સરખો નફો થાય એમ કરો અને બચત પણ બરાબર કરો જેથી આવતાં વર્ષે વધારે સારો ધંધો કરી શકાય. એવી વાત ઇલાબહેને આ પરિવારને સમજાવી. રતનબહેન ઈલાબહેનની આ વાત બરાબર સમજ્યા. રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ની vssmની લોન અને સગા સંબંધી પાસેથી રૂ. ૪૦,૦૦૦ લાવ્યા અને રૂ.૬૦,૦૦૦ નો સામાન લાવીને મૂર્તિ બનાવવાનું કામ ધુળાભાઈએ અત્યારથી શરુ કરી દીધું. જેથી સિઝનમાં દોડાદોડી ના થાય..

આ વર્ષે એમને ખુબ સારો નફો થશે એવો રતનબહેનને વિશ્વાસ છે. તે કહે છે, ‘સંસ્થાની લોન તો મારી દીકરી અને અમે જે કામ કરીએ છીએ એમાંથી જ ભરી દઈશું એટલે એ ૨૦,૦૦૦ તો સીધા જ બચવાનાને. મારે દીકરીઓને પરણાવવાની છે અને દીકરાને ખુબ ભણાવવો છે અને એ પણ દેવું કર્યા વગર અને એ સરસ પાર પડશે એવો હવે વિશ્વાસ છે. ’

Babubhai Bajaniyaa, his wife, 2 daughters and a son stay in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad. The couple’s two elder daughters are married and moved to their own homes. Babubhai irons clothes during the day time and drives a rented auto in the nights. His wife works as household help at times taking her daughters along to help her out. All the 4 kids do go to school though. 

Inspite of the couple working really hard,  making ends meet remained a challenge. The rent of the auto is Rs. 200 per day plus fuel charges, “ driving rickshaw isn’t a very lucrative, the  income from driving rickshaw is just enough to buy some vegetables for the family,” says Babubhai.  Had Babubhai owned the rickshaw he would save substantial amount every month, Babubhai desired to buy a rickshaw but that required lot of money which the family did now have. The couple had managed to save Rs. 20,000 but that wasn’t enough to buy an auto. 

VSSM’s Ilaben knew Babubhai. She knew Babubhai wished to buy a rickshaw , she explained to Babubhai that instead of buying a new vehicle get a second hand rickshaw  and once he has  saved  enough get a brand new one!! Ilaben helped Babubhai in getting Rs. 30,000 loan from Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM. He added his savings of Rs. 20,000 and bought a second hand rickshaw fro Rs. 50,000.

Babubhai Bajaniyaa Nomadic Tribes still works the same way irons clothes in during the day ash drives auto in the night. Sometimes when he gets a good customer he drives during the day. But he does have to catch up with his sleep which he does during the day by taking breaks from  ironing clothes. He saves Rs. 5000 to Rs. 5500 every month the amount he paid as auto rent earlier. “I want to educate my children well and give them a better future, it seems I will be able to do that now!!” shared Babubhai.

vssmની મદદથી જૂનામાં રીક્ષા ખરીદી અને પોતાની આર્થિક આવક વધારી 

બાબુભાઈ બજાણિયા તેમની પત્ની, ચાર દીકરીઓ અને એક દીકરા સાથે અમદાવાદના પાલડી વિસ્તારમાં  રહે. બે દીકરીઓ પરણીને સાસરે ગઈ અને બીજા બાળકો ભણે છે. બાબુભાઈ દિવસે કપડાંને ઈસ્ત્રી કરવાનું કામ કરે અને રાતનાં ભાડેથી રીક્ષા લઈને ચલાવે. તેમની પત્ની ઘરકામ કરવા જાય અને ક્યારેક દીકરીઓને પણ સાથે લઇ જાય. 

બાબુભાઈનો પરિવાર મોટો આખા ઘરનું પૂરું કરવું મુશ્કેલ પડે. રીક્ષાના ભાડા પેટે રૂ.૨૦૦ રોજના આપવા પડે અને રીક્ષામાં ગેસ પણ પોતે ભરાવે આમ મળતર ખુબ ઓછું રહે પણ એકલી ઈસ્ત્રી કરીને ઘર ચલાવવું મુશ્કેલ હતું. બાબુભાઈ કહે છે એમ ‘રીક્ષા ચલાવવામાં મળતર ખાસ નહિ પણ શાકભાજીના પૈસા નીકળી જાય એટલે બસ..’ પોતાની રીક્ષા હોય તો સારી એવી આવક થાય પણ તે ખરીદવા બાબુભાઈ પાસે ખાસ બચત નહોતી. રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ની મૂડી ખુબ મહેનત કરી પતી પત્નીએ ભેગી કરી રાખેલી. પણ એટલામાં રીક્ષા આવે નહિ...

vssm કાર્યકર ઇલાબહેન બાબુભાઈના પરિચયમાં ખરા. બાબુભાઈ રીક્ષા ખરીદવા ઈચ્છે છે એ પણ એ જાણે. ઇલાબહેને એમને નવી રીક્ષા ખરીદવાની જગ્યાએ હાલ પુરતી જૂની રીક્ષા લઈ લેવા કહ્યું અને સારી કમાણી થાય તો નવી રીક્ષા ક્યાં નથી લેવાતી એમ વાત કરી સમજાવ્યા. બાબુભાઈના ગળે આ વાત ઉતરી પણ પાસે તો રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ જ હતા. જૂની રીક્ષા રૂ.૫૦,૦૦૦માં આવે. ઈલાબહેને બાબુભાઇને રૂ.૩૦,૦૦૦ની લોન vssmમાંથી અપાવી અને બાબુભાઈ રીક્ષા લાવ્યા. બાબુભાઈનો નિત્યક્રમ એજ રહ્યો, દિવસે ઈસ્ત્રી કરે અને રાતના રીક્ષા ચલાવે.. પરિવાર આખો એકબીજાને મદદરૂપ થાય છે.. બાબુભાઈ પોતે ગરીબીમાંથી બહાર નીકળવા ઈચ્છે છે અને એટલે જ આવી કાળી મજૂરી કરે છે એ કહે છે, ‘દિવસે ઇસ્ત્રીના કામની સાથે થોડો આરામ થઇ જાય છે એટલે રાતના રીક્ષા ચલાવું છું હવે ભાડું આપવું પડતું નથી એટલે ભાડાના જ મહિનાના રૂ. ૫,૦૦૦ થી રૂ.૫,૫૦૦ બચે છે. બાકી દિવસ દરમ્યાન પણ કોઈ વરધી મળે જાય તો એ પણ કરી લઉં છું.. બચત પણ કરું છું. મારે બાળકોને ખુબ ભણાવવા છે અને હવે બધું થશે એમ લાગે છે.’
