Suvaben Dilawarbhai and her family of seven stay in Rajkot’s Ghanteshwar. An alcoholic husband meant Suvaben had to work very hard to feed the family. She makes kitchen tools like tongs, spatula, serrated spoons, large pans, tin stoves, etc by hand and sells them in neighbouring villages. Her husband does help in making these goods but a substantial part of their earning goes in his alcohol.

VSSM works in the region and Kanubhai knew the family well. One day Suvaben shared her pain and issues with Kanubhai requesting him for a loan from VSSM as she needed more money to increase her work. She needed money to buy raw material so as to increase the manufacturing. However there as one catch, loan from VSSM meant commitment to give up and abstain from addictions of alcohol, tobacco, smoking etc.  So Dilawarbhai was sensitised and convinced to give up his alcohol habit, he was required to take a pledge to abstain from alcohol. Subsequently,  Suvaben was given a loan of Rs. 10,000. The couple bought raw materials and began making tools. Once enough was manufactured the couple set out to sell to as far as Mumbai. Previously this wasn’t possible since money was scarce, manufacturing in bulk was unthinkable so all they did was make little, sell it in the neighbouring villages and Dilawarbhai  spending on his drinking. Whenever time permits from their studying their children also lend a hand with certain easy tasks.

The family is on its way to enjoying financial security they never experienced. Dilawarbhai has kept his pledge and remained clean from drinking, the everyday quarrels between this couple are now thing of past, profits are good and  the instalments are paid on time as well…..

રાજકોટ નજીક આવેલા ઘંટેશ્વરમાં વિચરતી જાતિ વસાહતમાં ગાડલિયા લુહાર સમુદાયનાં સુવાબેન દિલાવરભાઈ પોતાનાં પરિવાર સાથે રહે. સાત જણનાં પરિવારનું ગુજરાન લોખંડનો માલ-સામાન બનાવી કરે. સુવાબહેન ચીપીયા, ઝારા, સાણસી, તાવેતા, પતરાનાં ચૂલા, તબકડા વગેરે જેવા સાધનો બનાવીને આજુબાજુનાં ગામોમાં ફરીને વેચે અને આજીવિકા રળે.

પતિ દિલાવરભાઈને દારૂનું વ્યસન ખૂબ. સુવાબહેન સાથે એ પોતે પણ સામાન બનાવે પણ કમાણીનો ઘણો હિસ્સો દારૂમાં નાખે. ઘરમાં ઝઘડાં કરે. આ વિસ્તારમાં vssm કામ કરે. vssmના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ બજાણીયાના પરિચયમાં આ પરિવાર આવ્યો. કનુભાઈને સુવાબહેને પરિવારની તકલીફોની વાત કરી. સાથે સાથે ધંધા માટે થોડી વધારે મૂડી મળે તો ઘણું કામ થઇ શકે એમ જણાવ્યું,

સંસ્થા તરફથી સુવાબહેનને રૂI ૧૦,૦૦૦/- ની વગર વ્યાજની લોન આપવામાં આવી પણ લોન આપતા પહેલાં દિલાવરભાઈને સમજાવી દારૂ પીવાનું બંધ કરવા પ્રતિજ્ઞા લેવડાવી.

સંસ્થાની લોન મળતાં જરૂરી કાચો માલ ખરીદી ઘરે સામાન બનાવવાનું પતિ-પત્નીએ શરૂ કર્યું. માલ તૈયાર થતાં પતિ-પત્ની મુંબઈ વેચવા જાય. પહેલાં એક સામટો વેચી શકાય એટલો સામાન તૈયાર થતો જ નહિ કારણ બચત પણ થતી નહિ. બે-ચાર દિવસ કામ કરીને જે સામાન ભેગો થાય એ લઈને ફરજીયાત રાજકોટમાં જ વેચવો પડે એવી હાલત હતી. પણ હવે સ્થિતિ બદલાઈ છે. તેમના બાળકો પણ સામાન તૈયાર કરવાનાં હળવા કામો જેવાં કે ઝારાને લાકડાનાં હાથા બેસાડવા, હોલ પાડવા જેવા કામો નવરાશનાં સમયમાં કરી માં- બાપને ભણતરની સાથે સાથે મદદરૂપ પણ થાય છે.

આજે દિલાવરભાઈ પોતે લીધેલી પ્રતિજ્ઞાનું અક્ષરશ: પાલન કરી રહ્યા છે. આજે ધંધામાં પણ સારો એવો નફો થાય છે. સંસ્થાની લોન પણ નિયમિત ભરપાઈ કરે છે.

સુવાબેનનાં પરિવારમાં આજે સુખ-સમૃધ્ધિ આવ્યા છે. વ્યસનો, કંકાસ દૂર થયા છે. VSSM સંસ્થાના કાર્યકરોની સાદી સૂઝબૂઝથી આ પરિવારો સાચ્ચા અર્થમાં સુખી થયાં છે.

The Ghanteshawar area near Rajkot has a sizeable population of nomadic families.  When VSSM began woking here some time ago the conditions of the families here was similar to elsewhere in the state. Gradually the citizenry documents were processed and families began receiving their entitlements. Livelihood of the families here still remains a major issue as most are small time workers who find difficult sustaining of their limited means of income.

One such family is of Leelaben and Devjibhai Gadaliya.  The couple makes house hold and kitchen tools from tin sheets. Leelaben hand crafts the tools Devjibhai goes out to sell them. Sometimes the continuity of work gets affected because of unavailability of raw material as there are times they do not have enough savings to purchase raw material i.e. the tin sheets. In such times the couple was required to work as manual labourers.  Similar to them was the condition of  Ehsanben, a widowed lady who also earned her living by making kitchen tools etc. But Ehsanben had other issues as she did not have any one to sell her products, she just had to sell them to the wholesale merchant at the prices he offered. She wants abel to demand better prices for her products and make enough profit.

Kanubhai, VSSM’s team member in  the region was familiar with the economic issues of these families, so he recommended Leelaben and Ehsanben to VSSM for an interest free loan. The loan was to act as a  seed capital for these families. Now because of the loan the cycle of production-sale-procurement-production continues. The money they earn also helps in paying back the instalments of the loan. They are also able to save some of their earnings now!!!

“You are like God to us, we were clueless on how to go about in life, numerous people have come promised us the sky, taken money from us  and later never showed up. You have got us ration cards Adhaar cards, voter ID cards and now you are concerned about our livelihoods too…” says Devjibhai..and Ehsanben resonates similar feelings too…

VSSM has been instrumental in giving the nomadic families an identity, an address and is nurturing their livelihood dreams. The families are realising a new found financial liberation both from the debt and a continued income. There is a new found happiness amongst them .. and we at VSSM are happy because they are happy….

રાજકોટ નજીક આવેલા ઘંટેશ્વરમાં વિચરતી જાતિની વસાહતમાં લીલાબેન અને દેવજીભાઈ ગાડલીયા પરિવાર સાથે કાચા ઝુંપડામાં રહે. પતિ - પત્ની બંને શહેરમાંથી થોડાંક પતરા લાવીને ઝુંપડામાં તબકડા, ઝારા, સાણસી, ચીપીયા, તાવેતા, પતરાના ચૂલા બનાવે. લીલાબહેન ઘરે સામાન બનાવે અને દેવજીભાઈ ગામેગામ વેચવા જાય. ક્યારેક માલસામાન ન હોય ત્યારે નિરાશ થઇ બેસી રહે અને છુટક મજૂરીએ જાય.

આજ વસાહતમાં એસાનબહેન પણ રહે. વિધવા એસાનબહેન પરિવારનો ગુજારો લોખંડમાંથી વિવિધ વસ્તુ બનાવીને કરે. આમ તો એમની હાલત પણ લીલાબહેનના પરિવાર જેવી જ. પણ લીલાબહેનના પતિ સામાન વેચવા જાય પણ એસાનબહેનના ઘરમાં તો એવું કોઈ નહિ કે જે સામાન વેચવા જાય.. એટલે એ સામાન સ્થાનિક વેપારીને વેપારી કહે એ ભાવે વેચી દે છે. 

vssmના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ બજાણીયાનો આ પરિવારોને સંપર્ક થયો. કનુભાઈએ આ પરિવારોની તકલીફ જાણી અને સારી રીતે વ્યવસાય કરી શકે એ માટે VSSM મારફન લોન અપાવી. કાચી સામગ્રી મળતાં આજે આ પરિવારનું આજીવિકા ચક્ર અખંડ ચાલે છે. માલસામાન વેચવાથી મળતા નાણાંમાંથી વગર વ્યાજની vssmની લોનનો હપ્તો ભરાય છે. સાથે જ બચત પણ થાય છે.

દેવજીભાઈ કહે છે “ તુમ હમારે ભગવાન કે સામાન હો, પતા નહિ થા ક્યાં કરના હૈ, લોગ આતે થે, પૈસે લે જાતે થે પર ઉન્હોને હમારે લિયે કુછ નહિ કિયા, તુમને હમારા રાશનકાર્ડ, આધારકાર્ડ, મતદારકાર્ડ બનવાકે દિયા ઔર હમારે ધંધે કી ભી આપ ચિંતા કરતે હો.” એસાનબહેનની લાગણી પણ કંઇક આવી જ છે.

વિચરતા સમુદાયને ઓળખ અને સરનામું અપાવવાનું, સ્વરોજગારમાં સહાય કરવાનું કાર્ય vssm થકી વસાહતોમાં થાય છે. આ પરિવારો સુખી થાય છે. એનો અમને આનંદ છે.

Dariyaben Gadaliya and her son stay in Deesa town of Banaskantha. The responsibility of running the house was on the son, who earned living by working as a manual labourers. The son got married, had a family of his own and sustain the growing family on a single income was getting difficult. Dariyaben decided to take up some work and  once her got married and the financial requirement of the house increased. She decided to sell kitchen tool made of iron. This as such was their traditional occupation and Dariyaben had the necessary skill to conduct the business. She would buy the products from Deesa market, sit on a roadside to sell them and in the evening bring the unsold stuff back home. The issue she had was carrying all the goods back home and sitting on a roadside to sell the stuff.

Dariyaben, who is aware of the activities of VSSM in the region approached Maheshbhai, VSSM’s team member in the region with a request for an interest free loan of Rs. 5,000 to buy a hand cart. She felt buying a hand cart wold ease her problem of carrying the goods. With the loan from VSSM Dariyaben purchased a hand cart. Her business is doing good. Her loan was entirely repaid this month (October 2015). When she had come to repay the last instalment she told Maheshbhai..”I plan to expand my business…i want to sell more products…VSSM will have to give me a loan of Rs. 10,000 once I have planned the expansion.”

Such assertive statements show the ownership the communities have towards VSSM. Its their organisation, working for their betterment. Such small loans have helped numerous families rebuild their living. When women like Dariyaben thank the organisation and value the efforts it makes us take a sigh of relief….afterall everything was worth it….

બનાસકાંઠાના ડીસામાં દરીયાબહેન ગાડલિયા પોતાના દીકરા સાથે રહે. દીકરો છૂટક મજૂરી કરે. એના પણ લગ્ન થયા અને એનો પરિવાર પણ મોટો થતો ચાલ્યો. દરિયાબહેને દીકરાને મદદરુપ થવા માટે લોખંડના ઓજારો વેચવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. આમ પણ એ બાપીકો વ્યવસાય હતો અને એમાં એમને ફાવટ પણ હતી.. લોખંડના ઓજારો ખરીદ્યા પછી એ વેચવા ડીસા બજારમાં બેસવાનું એમણે શરુ કર્યું પણ સાંજે પથારાનો સામાન ભેગો કરીને ઘરે લઇ જવો મુશ્કેલ પડે.

vssm દ્વારા ડીસામાં રહેતાં વિચરતા પરિવારો સાથે થઇ રહેલાં કામને દરીયાબહેન જાણે.. એમને vssm દ્વારા નાના વ્યવસાય માટે વગર વ્યાજની લોન આપવામાં આવે છે એ અંગે ખબર. હાથલારી મળે તો સામાન વેચવામાં ઘણી સરળતા પડે એવું દરિયાબહેનને લાગે પણ એટલી મૂડી નહિ.. vssmના કાર્યકર મહેશ સાથે એમણે લારી માટે રૂ.૫,૦૦૦ની લોન આપવા વિનંતી કરી. લોનથી એ લારી લાવ્યાં. આજે સરસ વેપાર કરે છે. એમની લોન આ મહીને (ઓક્ટોબર -૧૫) પૂરી થઇ. લોનનો છેલ્લો આપતાં એમણે vssmઅન કાર્યકર મહેશને કહ્યું, ‘મારે હજુ વધારે સામાન વસાવવો છે એનું આયોજન થાય પછી vssmમાંથી મને બીજી રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ લોન આપવાની છે..’ vssm પર એમનો કેટલો હક છે એ એમની વાત પરથી સમજી શકાય છે.. vssmની નાનકડી મદદથી લોકો પગભર થઇ રહ્યાં છે. દરીયાબહેન જેવા બહેનો જયારે સંસ્થાનો આભાર માનતા હોય ત્યારે ખુબ સુખ અનુભવાય છે..
