“Will giving this pedal rickshaw really help you?”

“Oh yes, sister, it will help a lot. We used to go to Rajkot GIDC from Lodhika to collect scrap sitting in a rented rickshaw. We used to pile the scrap so high on our shoulders and heads that we could barely carry it. On such days, we would barely earn ₹250. After paying the rent, we were left with only ₹150. But now, with this pedal rickshaw, we will be able to collect much more scrap. I estimate we could easily earn ₹800–₹900 per day. Earlier, we barely had enough to fill our stomachs, but now we can even save.”

Hearing this was truly heartwarming. Can ₹15,000 really make such a difference in someone’s life?

As part of our self-reliance program, we provide loans to people who want to start their own independent businesses. But some families are not capable of repaying a loan. For them, we provide tools or equipment suited to their trade, so they can increase their income. In this effort, Rajeshbhai Shah from Mumbai has been a great supporter. One could even say he has “pushed this initiative forward.”

Under this program, eight families in Lodhika were provided pedal rickshaws in the first phase. There are still more families who need rickshaws, but we couldn’t provide them earlier because they were not identified during our survey. Now, we are ready to support them as well.

This initiative has been supported by those who truly believe in the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — Sanjaybhai Shah, Sagar Modi, and Kushal Modi from Diya Trends Pvt. Ltd.

Through everyone’s combined effort, VSSM has brought smiles to the faces of ten families.

"અરે બેન બહુ સારુ રહેશે. અમે લોધિકાથી રીક્ષામાં બેસીને રાજકોટ GIDC માં ભંગાર ભેગુ કરવા જઈએ. તે એ રીક્ષા ભાડુ. પાછુ અમે ખભા ને માથા પર ઊંચકી શકાય એ રીતે  ભંગાર ભેગો કરીએ એના દિવસના બસો અઢીસો મળે. આમાંથી ભાડાના કાઢીએ તો વાંહે દોઢશો વધે. પણ હવે આ પેડલ મળી તે વધારે ભંગાર ભેગુ થઈ હકશે. મારા અંદાજ પ્રમાણે અમે આઠસો, નવસો નો ધંધો કરી હકીશું. પહેલા પેટ જોગુ માંડ નીકળતું પણ હવે બચતેય થાશે. એવું પેડલ રીક્ષા પાસે ઊભા રહીને ધીરુભાઈએ કહ્યું."સાંભળીને આનંદ થયો. 15,000 રૃપિયામાં કોઈની જિંદગીમાં આવડો ફરક પડી જાય?

અમારા સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત અમે પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરવાની ખેવના રાખનાર વ્યક્તિઓને લોન આપવાનું કરીએ. પણ આ કેટલાક પરિવારો એવા હોય કે, જેમની લોન લઈને ભરવાની ક્ષમતા નહોય. એમને એ જે ધંધો કરે તે ધંધાને અનુરૃપ સાધન આપવાનું કરીએ. જેથી એમની આવકમાં વધારો થાય. આ કાર્યમાં મુંબઈના રાજેશભાઈ શાહનો સહયોગ ઘણો. આમ તો એ ધક્કો મારે એમ પણ કહી શકાય. 

આ કાર્યક્રમના ભાગરૃપે જ લોધિકામાં રહેતા 8 પરિવારોને પ્રથમ ફેઝમાં પેડલ રીક્ષા આપી. હજુ કેટલાક પરિવારો છે જેમને પણ પેડલ આપવાની જરૃર છે. પણ એ પરિવારો અમે જ્યારે સર્વે કર્યો ત્યારે મળ્યા નહોતા. એટલે ન આપી શક્યા. પણ હવે આપીશું.

આ કાર્યમાં જેઓ વસુદૈવ કુટુંબકમ ની ભાવનાને ખરા અર્થમાં માને છે તેવા દિયા ટ્રેન્ડ્સ પ્રા.લી.ના આદરણીય સંજયભાઈ શાહ, શ્રી સાગર મોદી તેમજ શ્રી કુશલ મોદીએ મદદ કરી. 

સૌના સહિયારા પ્રયાસથી VSSM દસ પરિવારોના ચહેરા પર સ્મિત લાવવામાં નિમિત્ત બન્યું.

If we try to find a solution to a problem that seems difficult, the solution will certainly be found. The question is whether we are ready to approach the solution in the way we’ve found it.

Kanchanben lives in the village of Dabhana in the field. Her husband works in a company, and when Kanchanben gets work, she does field labor. However, field labor is not available year-round, and it becomes difficult to manage the household with her husband's earnings. She didn’t know what to do.

The government introduced sewing classes in the village. Kanchanben learned sewing. However, the issue was the sewing machine. She didn’t have enough savings to buy a machine.

Dr. K.R. Shroff Foundation provides loans to families of underprivileged and nomadic communities through VSSM. Kanchanben knew about this. She contacted Rajnibhai, a worker from the organization. She requested a loan of 50,000 to buy a sewing machine along with fabric to sew and sell ready-made dresses, blouses, etc.

Kanchanben’s eyes showed determination and the zeal to work hard. People like her definitely deserve loans. A loan was granted, and today she earns five to seven thousand a month. From her earnings, she saves money and dreams of opening a larger shop.

She also wishes to convince her husband to leave his job, buy an auto-rickshaw, and start an independent business.

When Kanchanben met the respected Pratulbhai Shroff, he became emotional. He said, “I am very happy now. VSSM and KRSF together have helped 9,400 families become independent in business. We are pleased to bring happiness into the lives of the underprivileged."

અઘરામાં અઘરી લાગતી સમસ્યાનું સમાધાન શોધવા કોશીશ કરીએ તો સમાધાન મળે જ. મુદ્દો આપણે સમાધાન શોધી તે પ્રમાણે કરવા તૈયાર છીએ કે કેમ તે...

ખેડાના ડભાણ ગામમાં કંચનબેન રહે. પતિ કંપનીમાં નોકરીએ જાય ને કંચનબેન ખતમજૂરી મળે તો એ કરે. પણ ખેતમજૂરી બારે મહિના મળે નહીં ને પતિની કમાણી પર ઘર ચલાવવામાં તકલીફ પડે. શું કરવું એ સમજાતું નહોતું.

ગામમાં સિવણના વર્ગો સરકારે શરૃ કરાવ્યા. કંચનબેન સિવણ શીખ્યા. પણ મુદ્દો મશીનનો હતો. બચત એટલી હતી નહીં કે એ મશીન ખરીદી શકે.

 ડો. કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશન તકવંચિત અને  વિચરતી જાતિઓના પરિવારોને VSSM ના માધ્યમથી લોન આપી ધંધો કરતા કરે એ કંચનબેન જાણે. એમણે સંસ્થાના કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈનો સંપર્ક કરી. સિલાઈ મશીનની સાથે સાથે કપડુ ખરીદી તૈયાર ડ્રેસ,બ્લાઉઝ વગેરે સીવી વેચવા 50,000 લોનની માંગણી કરી.

નિષ્ઠા અને મહેનત કરવાની ધગશ કંચનબેનની આંખોમાં દેખાતી હતી. આવા વ્યક્તિઓને લોન આપવાનું તો કરવું જ પડે. લોન આપી ને આજે હવે એ મહિને પાંચ સાત હજાર કમાતા થઈ ગયા. એમની કમાણીમાંથી એ બચત કરે ને મોટી દુકાન નાખવાનું એ સ્વપ્ન સેવે. 

એમના પતિને પણ નોકરી છોડાવી રીક્ષા લઈ એ સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરતા થાય એવી એમની ઈચ્છા છે.

આદરણીય પ્રતુલભાઈ શ્રોફને જ્યારે કંચનબહેન મળ્યા ત્યારે એ ભાવુક થયા. એમણે કહ્યું, મને અત્યાર ઘણું સુખ છે. VSSM અને KRSF એ મળીને અત્યાર સુધી 9400 પરિવારોને સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરતા કર્યા. તક વંચિતોના જીવનમાં સુખ આપી શક્યાનો અમને રાજીપો..

"Instead of giving me ration, help me start a business... I don’t like sitting idle and eating." If a young person says this, it’s understandable, but this is what 82-year-old Jeevan Kaka was saying. There’s no one in his family. He sleeps in the courtyard of the Mataji temple in Kheda’s Beedj. He lived his life working hard, but was never able to own a house.

We provided Jeevan Kaka with ration every month under the maintenance program, so that he could make his own living and not have to depend on others. But Kaka didn’t like the idea of receiving free food.

One day, Dimpleben from our organization, along with our associate Inderbhai, went to Bidaj in Kheda where they met Jeevan Kaka.

When they inquired about his well-being, Kaka talked about wanting a source of livelihood. In his youth, Kaka used to sell plastic items from a cart. They decided to help him sell those items again, and respected Inder Modi offered to assist.

It’s been around three months since then. Help came through, and Kaka started selling items from the cart. Recently, when I went to Bidaj with Inder Modi, we met Jeevan Kaka again. Kaka said, "Now I have dignity. As long as my hands and feet work, I will work, and if I do business like this, my health will stay good."

We had many conversations with Kaka, but there was no trace of despair or fatigue in his life. Kaka is an inspiration to many... I bow to him in respect.

Thanks to the respected Inder Modi for understanding Jeevan Kaka’s feelings and helping him. As VSSM, we are honored to have been a part of this process...

મને તમે રાશન આપો એના કરતાં મને ધંધો કરી આપો ને.. મને આમ બેસી ને ખાવું ગમતું નથી.' કોઈ જુવાન વ્યક્તિ આવુ કહે તો સમજાય પણ અમને આ કહી રહ્યા હતા 82 વર્ષીય જીવણ કાકા. એમના પરિવારમાં કોઈ નહીં. ખેડાના બીડજમાં માતાજીના મંદિરના ઓટલે એ સુઈ રહે. મહેનત મજૂરી કરીને જીંદગી જીવ્યા. પણ ઘર ન કરી શક્યા. 

જીવણકાકાને અમે માવજત કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત દર મહિને રાશન આપીયે. જેથી એ પોતાના જોગુ બનાવી જીવી શકે. કોઈની ઓશિયાળી વેઠવાની ન થાય. પણ કાકાને આ મફતનું ખાવું ગમે નહીં.

એક દિવસ અમારા ડિમ્પલબેન અમારી સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજન ઈન્દ્રભાઈ સાથે ખેડાના બીડજમાં ગયા ત્યાં જીવણકાકા મળ્યા.

એમની ખબર અંતર પુછતા કાકાએ રોજીરોટીનું સાધન કરી દેવાની વાત કરી. કાકા યુવાનીમાં લારી લઈને પ્લાસ્ટિકની ચીજો વેચવાનું કરતા. તે એ જ ચીજો વેચવા મદદ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું ને આદરણીય ઇન્દ્ર મોદીએ એ માટે મદદ કરવા કહ્યું. 

આ વાતને ત્રણેક મહિના થયા. મદદ પહોંચી ને કાકાએ લારી પર સામાન વેચવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. હમણાં બીડજ ઇન્દ્ર મોદી સાથે જવાનું થયું ને જીવણકાકા મળ્યા. કાકાએ કહ્યું, 'હવે હખ છે. જ્યાં સુધી હાથ પગ ચાલે ત્યાં સુધી કામ કરવું છે ને આવી રીતે ફરતો ધંધો કરુ તો તબીયતેય સારી રે..'

કાકા સાથે અમારી ઘણી વાતો થઈ પણ ક્યાંય જીવન પ્રત્યે હતાશા નહોતી ના કોઈ થાક...

 We have got houses, but now the problem is lack of occupation/work. We collect scrap from the streets (scavengers). We got houses in the Gondal-Gundala area of Rajkot. We collect scrap in the city of Gondal. So far our hut dwelling was also in Gondal.  We used to leave in the morning with the gunny bag on our shoulders to collect scrap. By afternoon the bag would get full which we would take it to our hut. We would do this for 2-3 days when the scrap dealer would come and collect all the scrap. But now you have given us houses in Gundala. We are happy about it. Our lifelong dream of having our own house is fulfilled. We have settled down in the new house but now the difficulty is with our work. Gundala to Gondal is about 7 kms. From Gundala we reach Gondal with empty gunny bags in a vehicle. We collect the scrap but after collection to go back to Gundala is a challenge. The distance is too long. To take a rickshaw and go home to Gundala is an expensive proposition . 

We do not know what to do . We got our houses but if we cannot do business what do we eat?  We would not like to stay in temporary sheds now that we have proper homes in Gundala. It is after a great deal of trouble  that we have our own homes.  

With the efforts of all located in the Gundala area of Gondal, VSSM was able to build houses for 87 families.  One of the residents of this home, Smt Gajraben, came to our associates Chhayaben and Kanubhai with the problem faced by about 15 families.. We thought of solving their problem by providing them with a pedal rickshaw.  However, the financial condition of these families is so bad that they cannot buy a pedal rickshaw even after taking a loan. While we were thinking how to solve the problem, we got a phone call from our well-wisher Shri Rajeshbhai Mehta that he along with other well wishers would help solve the pedal rickshaw problem. We felt that this is all nature's play. Shri Jesalkumar Bharatbhai Shah, Shri Milanbhai Ratilal Shah, Shri Tusharbhai Modi, Shri Vinaybhai Mehta & Kaycee Diamonds helped us and we could give  Rickshaw Cycles to 15 such families. Rajeshbhai was instrumental in getting this done. With the blessings of all of you, we improve the lives of 15 families. Thank You very much !! 

'ઘર મળી ગયા પણ તકલીફ કામની હતી.. અમે ભંગાર વીણવાનું કામ કરીએ. રાજકોટાના ગોંડલના ગુંદાળામાં અમને ઘર મળ્યા. કચરો અમે ગોંડલ શહેરમાં વીણીયે. અત્યાર સુધી અમારુ ઝૂંપડું પણ ગોંડલમાં જ હતું એટલે ખભા પર કોથળા લઈને સવારના નીકળી પડીયે. બપોર સુધી ભેગુ થાય એ ભંગાર ખભા પર કોથળામાં લઈને ઝૂંપડે આવીયે. બે ચાર દિવસ આ રીતે ભંગાર ભેગો થાય પછી ભંગારવાળા ભાઈ અમારા છાપરે આવીને સામાન લઈ જાય. પણ તમે અમને પોતાના ઘર ગુંદાળામાં કરી આપ્યા. રાજી તો થવાય. વર્ષોનું અમારા ઘરનું સપનું પુરુ થ્યું. 

અમે રહેવા આવી ગયા. પણ પછી તકલીફ ભંગાર વીણવાના ધંધાને લઈને થવા માંડી. ગુંદાળાથી ગોંડલ છ સાત કી.મી. થાય. અમે વાહનમાં ખાલી કોથળા સાથે બેસીને ગોંડલ પહોંચી જઈએ. ભંગાર વીણી લઈએ. પણ એ ભંગાર ખભા પર લઈને વસાહતમાં આવવું મુશ્કેલ થઈ જાય. અંતર ઝાઝુ છે એટલે. રીક્ષા કે કોઈ સાધનવાળાને બેસાડવા કહીએ તો એ ભાડુ એટલું માંગે જેટલો અમે ભંગાર ભેગો કર્યો ન હોય...

શું કરવું સમજાતું નહોતું. ઘરનું સુખ મળ્યું. પણ ધંધો ન કરીએ તો ખાઈયે શું?. પાછુ ગોંડલમાં છાપરુ વાળવું પણ ગમે નહીં. માંડ માંડ છાપરાંમાંથી મુક્તિ મળી હતી'

ગોંડલના ગુંદાળામાં VSSM એ સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા સ્વજનોની મદદથી 87 પરિવારોના ઘરો બાંધ્યા. આ ઘરમાં રહેવા આવનાર ગજરાબહેને ભંગારનો ધંધો કરતા 15 પરિવારોની મૂંઝવણ અમારા કાર્યકર છાયાબહેન અને કનુભાઈને કહી. રસ્તો એમને પેડલ રીક્ષા આપવાનો અમે વિચાર્યો.

પણ આ પરિવારોની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ અત્યંત ખરાબ. એ પોતે લોન લઈથી પેડલ રીક્ષા ખરીદી શકે નહીં. 

શું કરવું એ મૂંઝવણ હતી ત્યાં મુંબઈમાં રહેતા અમારા પ્રિયસ્વજન રાજેશભાઈ મહેતાનો ફોન આવ્યો ને એમણે કેટલાક પ્રિયજનો આવા કાર્યમાં મદદ કરવાની ભાવના રાખે છેનું કહ્યું. 

અમને તો જાણે આ બધુ કુદરતે ગોઠવી આપ્યાનું લાગ્યું.. મુંબઈથી અમને શ્રી જેસલકુમાર ભરતભાઈ શાહ, શ્રી મિલનભાઈ રતિલાલ શાહ, શ્રી તુષારભાઈ મોદી, શ્રી વિનયભાઈ મહેતા, Kaycee Diamonds એ મદદ કરી ને અમે 15 પરિવારોને સાયકલ આપી. રાજેશભાઈ આમાં નિમિત્ત બન્યા...

આપ સૌ પ્રિયજનોની મદદથી 15 પરિવારોના જીવને સાતા પહોંચી... ખુબ ખુબ આભાર.

Shantibahen’s long battle with tuberculosis has taken a heavy toll on her body. The body has lost a lot of muscle and fat weight, and it is tired of fighting all these years. Shantibahen was a vegetable vendor and her husband Hasubhai rode a three-tiered paddle rickshaw. The couple worked hard, and life was good.  But the battle with TB stretched too long; it shattered her physical and mental strength; fight it out, and mental strength is a significant factor in fighting a disease like TB.

Hasubhai continued to boost Shantibahen’s spirits to keep fighting, but it didn’t help much. Hasubhai is wise; he knows work is the only therapy to keep his wife upbeat. He wanted Shantibahen to take up vegetable vending again but lacked the capital to buy a hand cart. VSSM learned about the need and gave a handcart to Shantibahen.

“I want to work and get better soon; I want to be there for my children, who are still small!” Shantibahen shared her sentiments while at our office to collect the handcart, 

We pray for Shantibahen’s speedy recovery, and a happy and peaceful future. We are also grateful to the generous support of our well-wishing donors who enable us to walk this path.

શાંતિબહેનનું શરીર સાવ જીર્ણ થઈ ગયું. એ ઘણા વખતથી ટીબીની બિમારીથી પીડાય. શરીર પણ હવે થાક્યું. પહેલાં એ શાકભાજીનો વેપાર કરતા અને એમના પતિ હસુભાઈ પેડલ રીક્ષા ચલાવે. પતિ પત્ની બેઉની મહેનતથી જીંદગી સરસ ચાલતી.

પણ ટીબીની લાંબી બિમારીથી એ મનથી એ સાવ ભાંગી પડ્યા. આમ પણ માણસ મનથી ભાંગી પડે પછી શરીર કાંઈ ઝાઝી ઝીક ઝીલી ન શકે.

હસુભાઈ શાંતિબહેનની આ હાલત જુએ એ હિંમત આપે પણ શાંતિબહેનના જીવનમાંથી જાણે શાંતિ જ હણાઈ ગયેલી. 

આવામાં શાંતિબહેન ફરીથી કામ પર લાગે તો મન વ્યસ્ત રહે તો ખોટા વિચારો આવવાના બંધ થાય. આવું હસુભાઈએ વિચાર્યું ને એમણે શાંતિબહેનને ફેર શાકભાજી વેચતા કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. પણ એ માટે જોઈતી લારી એમની પાસે નહીં. અમારા ધ્યાને આ વિગત આવી અને અમે એમને લારી આપી. 

અમારા કાર્યાલય પર એ લારી લેવા આવ્યા ત્યારે ખુબ રાજી થયા. એમણે કહ્યું, 'બસ ધંધો કરવો છે ને શરીર સારુ કરવું છે..' મૂળ એમના બાળકો નાના એમના માટે શાંતિબહેનને જીવવું છે..

શાંતિબહેન ધંધામાં સફળ થાય સાથે એમની તબીયત સારી થાય એવું ઈચ્છીએ VSSM ને આ કાર્ય કરવા માટે મદદ કરનાર સ્નેહીજનોનો આભાર..

We will give a handcart to Bhanuben and some capital to start a business selling vegetables.

"Who is Bhanuben? What is her age?" I asked obvious questions when one of our team members mentioned the above.

"Bhanuben is here at our office; let us meet her," he responded.

"A very frail-looking lady with an equally frail voice entered my office.

"Do you know the business of selling vegetables?" I asked.

"My husband was a vegetable vendor; I would accompany him sometimes. Hence, I know certain things but will learn on the job, Didi!"

"What work do you do at present?"

"I work as domestic help, but an  income of Rs. 3000 is insufficient to feed my two children and parents-in-law," Bhanuben responded. 

"What went wrong with your husband?"

"Cancer. My husband was addicted to gutka masala; he would not listen to any of my pleas to stop eating the gutka. As a result, he was diagnosed with cancer of the mouth. We got him operated on, but the doctor said he would never be cancer free because cancer had spread in the body. My husband heard the doctors say this and committed suicide." Bhanuben was emotional by the time she finished this statement. She would be 27ish years old, and her husband passed away two years ago.

"You re-married?"

"I don't want to marry again. I want to focus on raising my children well and educating them. I want to live for them."

"what difference will a handcart bring to your life?

"It will make a difference, Didi. I don't have money to buy a handcart. If I get into selling vegetables, I will make a decent income. My house is a kuccha one-room house with a leaking roof; my father-in-law remains ill. I question why god has granted me so much pain. I don't have parents, just a sister as a family. Whenever possible, sends Rs. 500-1000. She is my strength and support. But I am tired now; if I had no children to look after, I too would have decided to end my life." Tears rolled down Bhanuben's eyes.

I am astonished by the sheer negligence of people with addictions towards their families.

"Didi, Hirenbhai tells me that you also operate a hostel. I wish to enrol my children into it." The life lessons Bhanuben has learned under her given  circumstances 

A handcart was given to Bhanuben while we worked towards getting her a proper house.

"Will God give me happiness?" on her way out, she comes back from the main gate to ask me this.

આપણે ભાનુબહેનને શાકભાજીનો વેપાર કરવા લારી આપીશું ને ધંધો શરૃ કરવા થોડા રૃપિયા પણ...

અમારા કાર્યકરે આ વાત કહી એટલે સાહજીક થયું ભાનુબહેનની પસંદગી કેમ? એમની ઉંમર શું?

જવાબમાં ભાનુબહેન આવ્યા છે મળી લઈએ એવું કાર્યકરે કહ્યું ને, ભાનુબહેન મારા કાર્યલયમાં આવ્યા. શરીરે દુબળા, અવાજ પણ સાવ ઝીણો..

મે પુછ્યું, તમને શાકભાજીનો વેપાર આવડે છે. 

મારા ઘરવાળા એ કરતા હું ક્યારેક એમની સાથે જતી. એટલે થોડું ફાવે છે પણ કરી લઈશ દીદી.

હાલ કામ શું કામ કરો?

કચરા પોતા કરવા જવું છું. પણ એમાં ઝાઝુ મળતું નથી. 3000 જેવું મળે એમાં મારા બે બાળકો અને સાસુ સસરાનું પુરુ કરવાનું. થોડું મુશ્કેલ થાય છે. ઘરવાળાને શું થયેલું?કેન્સર.. વ્યસન કરતા. હું ઘણું ના પાડતી પણ એ માને નહીં. મોંઢાનું કેન્સર થયું. ઓપરેશન કરવાનું હતું. એ વખતે ડોક્ટરે મને કહ્યું, ઓપરેશન પછી પણ એ ઝાઝુ નહીં કાઢે. મૂળ કેન્સર પ્રસરી ગયું છે. મારા ઘરવાળા આ સાંભળી ગયા ને એમણે આત્મહત્યા કરી..

આટલું કહેતા ભાનુબહેન ઢીલા થઈ ગયા..  એમની ઉંમર છવ્વીસ કે અઠ્ઠાવીસની હશે.. બે વર્ષ પહેલાં પતિ ગુજરી ગયા. 

તમે બીજા લગ્ન?

ના દીદી હવે નથી કરવા.. મારા બે બાળકો છે એમને ભણવવા છે. એમના માટે જીવવું છે.. લારીથી જીંદગીમાં ફરક પડશે? પડશે દીદી.. મારી પાસે લારી ખરીદવા પૈસા નથી  પણ લારી મળે તો કામની સાથે સાથે શાકભાજીનો વેપાર થાય તો આવક વધે.. હાલ ઘર પણ ઠેકાણા વગરનું છે. એક રૃમ છે. ચોમાસામાં પતરાંમાંથી પાણી પડે. ઘરમાં બિમાર સસરા.. ક્યારેક થાય ભગવાને આટલું દુઃખ કેમ દીધું. પિયરમાં પણ એક બહેન સિવાય કોઈ નથી. મા-બાપ પણ નથી.. બહેન ક્યારેક 500 -1000 મોકલી આપે. હીંમત એ ઘણી આપે. પણ થાકી ગઈ છું. બાળકો ન હોત ને તો મે પણ એમના જેવો જ રસ્તો અપનાવી લીધો હોત...

આટલું કહેતા ભાનુબહેનની આંખોમાંથી બોર જેવડાં આંસુ વહેવા માંડ઼્યા. સાંત્વના તો આપવાની જ હોય..

પણ વ્યસ્ન કરનાર વ્યક્તિઓ પરિવારની કેમ ચિંતા નહીં કરતા હોય એ પ્રશ્ન હંમેશાં થાય..

ભાનુબહેનને કહ્યું, દીદી મને હીરેનભાઈએ કહ્યું કે તમે હોસ્ટેલ પણ ચલાવો તે મારા બે બાળકોને હું ત્યાં મુકવા ઈચ્છુ છુ.... 

કેવી સરસ સમજણ કદાચ સમયની થપાટે તેમને આ બધુ સમજાવ્યું.એમનું ઘર સરખુ કરવાનું પણ કરી આપીશું.. ને લારી તો આપવાની જ હોય...

એ મારા કાર્યલયમાંથી બહાર નીકળી રહ્યા હતા દરવાજે પહોંચી પાછા વળીને અમણે કહ્યું, 

ભગવાન મને સુખ આપશે?

There is a very popular phrase in Gujarati, 'Even the dogs from maternal town are dearer'. Women use it to share the ingrained love for all things associated to their maternal home. Rekha Maa used that phrase when she tightly held my hand.

VSSM's Madhuben and Hiren were working on ration card-related issues in Ramol when Alpesh from the settlement asked them to meet Rekha Maa.

Rekha Maa's husband ran a pakora cart, and it was a flourishing business. The family lived at peace until her husband was alive, as there was a steady flow of income. However, meeting the household expenses became a challenge after he passed away. The couple's only child is differently abled and needs constant medical attention. Rekha Maa took up a job as a utensil cleaner at a hotel. Gradually, as she aged, that became cumbersome because handling restaurant vessels required a lot of energy.

With no options left, she began begging near Ramol toll booth.

Alpesh and other village youth would watch Rekha Maa's plight in dismay. They helped whenever possible, but with unstable economic conditions, they also had limitations. Alpesh felt it would be better if Rekha Maa was given a hand cart through which she could trade seasonal produce. Alpesh did not want her to feel burdened by depending on others for food.

Alpesh shared his thoughts with Madhuben. Consequently, we bought a hand cart for Rekha Maa.

"Ba, where is your maternal home?" I asked Rekha Maa when she was at our office to collect the hand cart.

"Have you seen Tharad in Banaskantha?" Rekha Maa asked.

“Yes, I have also seen Chekhla, Simana, Kakar…” I replied.

"Are you from there, my village?" a gleaning Rekha Maa asks me.

The delight on her face was so bright that I could not say no. Also,  I believe in Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam… that makes this entire earth my maternal home.

I liked the Ba's intent of working to earn a living. Alpesh and others from the settlement accepted the responsibility of bringing goods for Ba and ferrying the cart to and from the work spot.

This was a fantastic amalgamation. Alpesh, his friends and Rekha Ma all belong to different communities neither were they related in any other way, yet humanity prevailed, and they chose to stand beside Rekha maa.

We told Rekha Ma to work until her health permits, after which we shall provide a monthly ration kit.

The world is a better place because humans live Alpesh still exist.

પિયરનું તો કુતરુય વહાલું લાગે... એવું કહીને રેખા માએ મારો હાથ એકદમ મજબૂત પકડી લીધો..

વાત જાણે એમ બની..

અમારા મધુબહેન અને હીરેન(કાર્યકરો) રામોલમાં  વિચરતી જાતિઓની વસાહતમાં તેમના રેશનકાર્ડના પ્રશ્નોને લઈને કામગીરી કરી રહ્યા હતા એ વેળા વસાહતમાં રહેતા અલ્પેશે મધુબહેનને રેખા માને એક વખત મળવા કહ્યું.

રેખામાના ઘરવાળા ભજીયાની લારી ચલાવતા. એ જ્યાં સુધી હતા ત્યાં સુધી સંસાર સુખેથી ચાલ્યા કરતો. પણ એમના ગયા પછી ઘર ચલાવવું કઠીન થઈ પડ્યું. એમને એક દીકરો પણ એ વિકલાંગ ને સતત બિમાર રહ્યા કરે. રેખા મા હોટલમાં વાસણ ઘસવા જાય ને ઘરનું પુરુ કરે.ધીમે ધીમે હોટલમાં વાસણો એ પણ મોટા મોટા ઘસવાનું પણ એમને કઠીન લાગવા માંડ્યું મૂળ ઉંમર થઈ ને એટલે. 

આખરે એમણે રામલો ટોલ નાકા પાસે ભીખ માંગવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

અલ્પેશ ને અન્ય યુવાનોને આ ગમે નહીં. એ નાની મોટી મદદ કરે પણ એ લોકોની સ્થિતિયે કાંઈ એવી સારી નહીં. અલ્પેશને થયું કે રેખા માને જો લારી મળે તો એ સીઝનલ ધંધો જેમ કે મકાઈના ડોડા વેચવાનું કે જામફળ વેચવાનુ કરી શકે. મૂળ કોઈ આપે ને ખાય એ રૃણાનુબંધ શક્ય હોય ત્યાં સુધી ન બંધાય તો સારુ એવું અલ્પેશ માને. 

તે એણે મધુબહેનને કહ્યું ને અમે લારી આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. રેખા મા લારી લેવા આવ્યા ત્યારે મે પુછ્યું,. 

બા પિયર ક્યાં થાય? 

એમણે કહ્યું બનાસકોઠામોં થરા જોયું?

મે કહ્યું હા, ચેખલા, સીમાણા, કાકર આ બધા જોયા..

સાંભળીને એ તો રાજી રાજી એમણે કહ્યું. તમે તોના? મારા ગોમના?

એમના મોંઢા પર એટલો હરખ હતો કે, ના ન પાડી શકી. વળી થયું હું તો વસુદૈવ કુટુબંકમઃમાં માનુ એટલે આ જગત આપણું પિયર જને....

પણ બાની મહેનત કરીને ખાવાની વાત ગમી. અલ્પેશ અને વસાહતના યુવાનોએ બાને લારીમાં ભરવાનો સામાન લાવી આપવાની ને લારી વેપારના સ્થળ સુધી લઈ આવવાનું ને સાંજે પરત મુકી આપવાની જવાબદારી સ્વીકારી. 

કેવો અદભૂત સંગમ. અલ્પેશ ને એના મિત્રો અને રેખા માની જાતિયે જુદી આમ કોઈ સંબંધ નહીં છતાં માનવતાને નાતે એ રેખામાની પડખે...

બસ રેખા માને અમે કહ્યું થાય ત્યાં સુધી કામ કરો ન થાય તે દિવસે કહેજો અમે રાશન આપીશું... 

પણ દુનિયા અલ્પેશ જેવા માનવતાવાદી યુવાનોથી ટકી છે...

During the olden days,  it was a norm to take up a father’s occupation. So a goldsmith’s son became a goldsmith, a farmer’s child would take up farming and so on. Just like so, we took up our family profession of playing ravanhattha, and it did sustain our generations. But today,  it is an occupation that brings us no returns; people consider us beggars, and they advise us to work to earn a living. Ben, doesn’t playing ravanhattha involve hard work? The younger generation has given up playing ravanhatta; instead, they have taken up odd businesses.

Dalpatbhai, from Ahmedabad’s Kamod village, had shared the above. Eventually, VSSM provided him with an interest-free loan to begin his venture.

The same was with Pravinbhai and Bhailalbhai from Banaskantha’s Bhoyan village. The duo had the skill to sell fashion and home accessories but lacked the capital to do so. They had stopped playing ravanhattha and made meagre earnings by working as menial labour. As we all know, working as a daily wage earner does bring meals to the table but is never enough to meet all the fundamental needs of life.

VSSM had provided loans to the duo. Once the paid off the first loan of Rs. 10K, they took another of Rs. 30k each. The monthly saving rule helped Bhailalbhai purchase a second-hand motorbike while Pravinbhai bought a brand new moped worth Rs. 65000 with a down payment of Rs. 10,000.

The Bharthari community earn their living by singing lullabies. In return of which, they are given sarees and grains. The sarees are repurposed in making shelters that barely protect them from the forces of nature. Sadly, they are left with no choice but to live so.

Pravinbhai and Bhailalbhai have growing independent ventures, each earning Rs. 500 to Rs. 600 daily. They now have a tin roof over their head and the aspiration to build a pucca house. Hopefully, that too shall happen soon.

VSSM’s Swavlamban initiative has supported marginal families with interest-free loans that help restore their livelihoods. The initiative has helped 5000 families until now. We wish each of these families the best in their life.

"હોની(સોની) નો સોકરો ઈના બાપા પાહેણથી ઘરેણાં ઘડતા હીખે, શેડુ(ખેડૂત)નો સોકરો સેતી કરતા. ઈમ અમેય બાપીકા ધંધા મોથે નભતા પણ હાલનો જમાનો બદલઈ જ્યો. લોકોન્ #રાવણહથ્થો વગાડનારા અમે ભીખ મોગનારા લાગીયે. એટલ હૌ મેનત કરીન્ કમાબ્બા કે. તે બુન રાવણહથ્થામોય મેનત તો થાય ક નઈ? પણ લોકો ન ઈની હમજ ચો? તે હવ અમાર #ભરથરીઓની હાલની પ્રજા આ બધુ મેલી ધંધો વળગવા મોડી..."

અમદાવાદના #કમોડમાં રહેતા દલપતભાઈએ આ કહેલું ને અમે એમને ધંધો કરવા લોન આપેલી. 

પણ આવી જ વાત હતી બનાસકાંઠાના ભોયણના પ્રવિણ અને ભાઈલાલભાઈની. શૃંગાર પ્રસાધનો અને એ સિવાય ઘરમાં જરૃરી નાની મોટી ચીજો વેચવાનું કરી શકવાની ક્ષમતા ખરી પણ ધંધો કરવા પાસે મૂડી નહીં. રાવણહથ્થો તો એમણે મૂકી દીધેલો.. મજૂરી કરતા પણ એ બંને કહે દાડી મજૂરીમાં પેટ જોગુ નીકળે. ઝાઝુ ભેગુ ન થાય..

અમે આ બેઉને ધંધો કરવા દસ હજારની લોન આપી એમાંથી એમને હીંમત આવી. લોન ભરપાઈ થઈ ગઈ બીજી ત્રીસ હજારની લોન પાછી લીધી. બચત તો અમે ફરજિયાત કરાવીએ. તે એ બચતમાંથી ભાઈલાલભાઈએ જુનામાંથી બાઈક ખરીદ્યું. જ્યારે પ્રવિણે 65000 નું નવું મોપેડ દસ હજાર ડાઉન પેમેન્ટ ભરીને લીધું. 

ભરથરીઓ હાલરડાં ગાય.. બદલામાં લોકો એમને સાડી અને દાણા ભેટમાં આપે. આ સાડીઓમાંથી એ ઘર બાંધે. સાડીના ઘર કેવા? એ શું રક્ષણ આપે? હોંશ તો કાચુ ભલે હોય પણ એ ટાઢ,તડકા અને વરસાદ સામે રક્ષણ આપે એવું ઘર બાંધવાની ખરી પણ પાસે પૈસા નહોતા. 

પ્રવિણ અને ભાઈલાલભાઈ લોનમાં સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરતા થયા. દૈનિક 500 થી 600 કમાતા થયા હવે એમણે પતરાંથી એમનું છાુપરુ ઊભુ કર્યું. 

હોંશ પોતાના ઘરની છે. એ પણ ઝટ પુરી થશે...

અમારા સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત નાના માણસોને નાની લોન આપવાનું કાર્ય કરીએ. અત્યાર સુધી 5000 થી વધુ પરિવારોને લોન આપી છે. બસ સૌ સુખી થાય એ ભાવના..

Vaishliben lives in Ahmedabad. Two years ago, she lost her husband to heart failure. The couple's family lay shattered due to this sudden life-changing event. The responsibility of raising their two children now fell upon Vaishaliben's shoulders. 

Initially, friends and relatives provided emotional and moral support. They assured support, but as we all know, we need to fight our battles.

Vaishaliben began working at the khakhra-making factory. However, the remuneration was not enough to meet their expenses. The challenges of life began taking a toll on Vaishaliben's mental health. She even contemplated and attempted suicide. VSSM's Kiran met her when she was undergoing treatment at a hospital. As she was admitted to Civil Hospital, there was no need for funds, but  VSSM remained by her side to provide warmth and strength to help her recover better.

"I know to tailor, women in my neighbourhood work on the sewing machine and earn Rs. 8 to 10,000 a month. I, too, can find sewing jobs if I had a sewing machine." Vaishaliben responded when we inquired if there was anything we could do to help her ease her financial challenges.

VSSM bought a sewing machine for Vaishaliben. We hope that it will help her earn and raise her children better. There is a regular workflow, and life seems a little easy for her. We hope that the children, once they grow up, become the support Vaishali needs.

I have always emphasised on education and financial independence of women. We should not be waiting for some untoward circumstances that force us to seek financial freedom.  

 વૈશાલીબેન.. અમદાવાદમાં રહે. 

એમના પતિ બે વર્ષ પહેલાં ગુજરી ગયા. એ રીક્ષા ચલાવતા. આમ તો એ હયાત હતા ત્યાં સુધી વૈશાલીબેનને કોઈ વાતે દુઃખ નહોતું. બે બાળકો સાથેનો સુખી સંસાર હતો. પણ હૃદયરોગથી એમના પતિનું અવસાન થયું. વૈશાલીબેનના માથે આભ ફાટ્યું. 

પતિ ગયાના શરૃઆતામાં તો ઘણા આવીને ચિંતા ન કરનું કહી ગયા પણ સમય જતા સૌ પોત પોતાની વ્યવસ્થામાં ગોઠવાઈ ગયા. વૈશાલીબેનને પોતાની મેળે બેઠા થવાનું હતું બે બાળકોને ભણાવીને ઉછેરવાના હતા. 

એમણે ખાખરાની ફેક્ટરીમાં કામ શરૃ કર્યું. પણ આવક ખર્ચને પહોંચી વળાય એટલી ન થાય. એ નાસીપાસ થઈ ગયા. વળી કોઈની હૂંફ પણ નહી. આખરે જીવન ટૂંકાવવાનો વિચાર આવ્યો ને એમણે એ પગલું ભર્યું પણ ખરુ. હોસ્પીટલમાં દાખલ થવા વખતે અમારા કાર્યકર કીરણનો સંપર્ક થયો. એ સાજા થાય એ માટે અમે એમની પડખે રહ્યા. આમ તો સારવાર સિવીલમાં થઈ એટલે બીજો કોઈ ખર્ચ ન થયો પણ માનસીક હૂંફ અને હિંમત અમે આપી. 

એ બેઠા થયા. આર્થિક રીતે એ પહોંચી વળવા બીજુ કશું પણ કરી શકાય એમ હોય તો અમે મદદ કરીશુંનું અમે કહ્યું ને એમણે કહ્યું, "સિલાઈ કામ મને આવડે છે. મારા ઘર આસપાસમાં ઘણા લોકો જોબવર્ક કરે છે. મહિને આઠ થી દસ હજાર તો આરામથી કમાઈ લે. મારી પાસે મશીન ખરીદવા પૈસા નથી. બાકી કામ તો મળી જાય."

વૈશાલીબેનના મોંઢા આ વાત સાંભળી. હવે આગળ કશું વિચારવાનું નહોતું. અમે મશીન લઈ આપ્યું જેથી એ બાળકોને મોટા કરી શકે. હવે એમનું કામ સરસ ચાલે છે. જીવન પ્રત્યે ફરિયાદો ઘટી છે. આશા રાખીએ બાળકો મોટા થાય ને એમને સુખી કરે. 

મશીન આપ્યું એ વેળા એ ઘણા રાજી થયા એ વખતની આ તસવીર..

હું હંમેશાં દીકરીઓને ભણવા માટે અને ભણ્યા પછી નાનુ મોટુ જે આવડે તે કામ કરવા ખાસ કહેતી હોવું છું. દરેકની સાથે અઘટીત ઘટના બને એવું જરૃરી નથી પણ બને ત્યારે આમ ઓશિયાળા ન થઈ જવાય માટે પગભર થવું...

I am sure you remember Harshil,  this little boy I mentioned a few weeks ago. We had reached out to you to help us support his treatment. Harshil is just a year old and has suffered from an intestine ailment since birth. A colostomy has been done as a stop-gap solution. The doctors are waiting for Harshil to weigh 9-10 kilos before they can perform any surgery on him. Right now, he needs constant medication and care. The pain this child undergoes makes me wonder when will he grow stronger to endure the surgery.

The family, including Harshil’s grandparents, must remain on their toes with frequent visits to Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital. At times they are required to call emergency medical services at midnight. Along with Harshil the illness is draining the family not just physically but financially as well.

Harshil’s father works as a porter and earns Rs. 200-250 a day, an amount that cannot buy enough food even. And Harshil’s grandfather used to sell fashion accessories through a roadside kiosk, but after Harshil’s heath issues surfaced, he was unable to focus on his business. As a result, the money he had saved was spent on the treatment, and even the products had to be given away.

After VSSM’s appeal, once the donations started pouring in, there was some relief in the expenses incurred by the family towards purchasing medication for Harshil. Gradually the treatment also got going, and we asked Karshanbhai (Harshil’s grandfather) to restart his work.

“I do wish to start my business, but I do not have enough funds to be able to buy goods and materials. If I had the required funds, I could begin earning and bring some money to the family,” he tells us.

With the help of Infomatic Solution, we brought Bagasara products for Karshanbhai to help him restart his business.

Karshabhai dropped by our office and arranged the purchased products nicely on the floor, just like he would at the market. “Of course, I have to show the stuff we have purchased!” he spoke with great honesty.

We pray for Harshil to recover soon and the family to find the happiness that has been eluding it…

હર્ષીલ...

તમને કદાચ યાદ હશે એની તકલીફ વિષે અહીંયા લખેલું ને પછી તમે સૌએ એની સારવારમાં ટેકો કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. હર્ષીલ એક વર્ષનો પણ જન્મતા જ આંતરડામાં કાંઈક તકલીફ થયેલી. તે હાલ એનું આંતરડુ બહાર છે. એને સતત દવાઓની જરૃર પડે. એનું ઓપરેશન એનું વજન 9 થી 10 કી.ગ્રાનું થાય ત્યારે થશે. ક્યારેક થાય આટલી બધી પીડા વચ્ચે એનું વજન કઈ રીતે વધે?

હર્ષીલના દાદા, દાદી ને મા એને લઈને સીવીલમાં દોડ્યા કરે. ક્યારેક અડધી રાતે 108 બોલાવી ભાગવું પડે એવી સ્થિતિ થાય. સતત દવાખાનાના દોડા ભલભલા માણસના હાંજા ગગડાવી નાખે.

હર્ષીલના પપ્પા સામાન ઊંચકવાનું કામ કરે. 200 -250 રૃપિયા મળે એમાંથી ઘરના બધાનું ચાલે. આમ તો હર્ષીલના દાદા કરશનભાઈ બુટ્ટી, ચુની, બંગડી ટુંકમાં બગસરાની વસ્તુઓ કાચની પેટીમાં લઈને વેચવાનું કરતા. પણ જ્યારથી હર્ષીલ બિમાર પડ્યો ત્યારથી એમનો ધંધો સાવ જ પડી ભાંગ્યો. જે બચત હતી એ દવામાં ખર્ચાઈ ને ધંધા માટેનો સામાન પણ વેચી નાખ્યો.

હર્ષીલને બહારથી દવાઓ લાવવી પડે. ખાસ તો મલમ ને અન્ય ડ્રેસીંગનો સામાન. આપ સૌ એમાં મદદ કરો એટલે હવે એ ખર્ચની જવાબદારી ઘટી. ધીમે ધીમે હર્ષીલની દવાઓને સારવારનું ગોઠવાયું. હવે અમે કરશનભાઈને તમે ધંધો વળગો એમ કહ્યું.

એમણે કહ્યું, ધંધો તો કરવો છે પણ મારી પાસે મૂડી નથી. દસ પંદર હજારનો સામાન જો મળી જાય તો એમાંથી હું ઘરમાં નાનામોટો ટેકો કરી શકુ ને આવકમાંથી જ બીજો સામાન લાવ્યા કરુ જે પહેલાં કરતો હતો..

આફતમાં આવી પડેલા સ્વજનોને મદદ કરવી એ તો ધર્મ છે. ઈન્ફોમેટીક સોલ્યુશનની મદદથી અમે કરશનભાઈને બગસરાનો સામાન જે એ પહેલાં વેચતા એ લાવી આપ્યો અને એમણે ફરી ધંધો શરૃ કર્યો..

Seventeen-year-old Fiza is a bright and intelligent girl, but after her father was diagnosed with cancer, Fiza had to drop out of school while she was still in 8th grade. The responsibility to fund her father’s treatment fell to Fiza, who began working as domestic help and got her father treated.

Fiza could never return to school even after her father was alright. Later, instead of working as domestic help, she began sewing on her neighbour’s sewing machine whenever it was not in use. The money helped supplement the family income.

After a gap of a couple of years, Fiza’s father has recently had a cancer relapse, and her mother, too, is not in the best of her health. The father has been the primary breadwinner of the family, but with cancer coming back,  the physical and financial burden of running the household fell on Fiza’s shoulders.

The treatment was underway in Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital, which required the family to frequent the city. The loss of income brought the challenges of getting food on the table. After VSSM learnt about this condition, it began sending a monthly ration kit to the family. We also felt that a new sewing machine would help Fiza earn more for her family.With the help of Infrometic Solution, we bought Fiza a brand sewing machine which helps her have long work nights.

It feels proud to know daughters like Fiza; she is not old enough to take up the huge responsibility of running a household. Still, the harsh circumstances have taught her to gracefully accept the challenges coming her way.

 17 વર્ષની ફીઝા ભણવામાં ખુબ હોંશિયાર. 8મું ભણતી એ વેળા એના પપ્પાને મોંઢાનું કેન્સર થયું. ખુબ સારા ગુણથી પાસ થતી ફીઝાનો અભ્યાસ પપ્પાના ઈલાજ માટે છૂટ્યો. એણે લોકોના ઘરોમાં કચરા પોતા વાસણ કરવા જવાનું શરૃ કર્યું અને પપ્પાનો ઈલાજ કરાવી તેમને સાજા કર્યા.

પણ એ પછી ફીઝાનું ભણવાનું ન થયું. એ મોટી થઈ રહી હતી. હવે કચરા પોતાની જગ્યાએ એણે પડોશીના સિલાઈ મશીન પર કામ કરવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. જ્યારે મશીન ફ્રી હોય ત્યારે એ કામ કરતી. આમ તેનાથી ઘરમાં ટેકો થતો.

હમણાં એના પપ્પાને કેન્સરે પાછો ઉથલો માર્યો. ફરીવાર ફીઝાને ઝાઝુ કામ કરવાની જરૃર પડી. એની મમ્મીની તબીયત પણ નાદુરસ્ત રહે. એ ઈલાજમાં કે ઘર ચલાવવામાં ઝાઝી મદદ ન કરી શકે. ઘર તો ફીઝાના પપ્પા સાબરકાંઠાના તલોદમાં ટેક્ષી ચલાવીને ચલાવતા પણ એ બિમાર થતા એ બધુંય બંધ થયું.

અમદાવાદ સિવિલના સતત દોડા. આર્થિક રીતે પરિવાર ખુવાર થઈ ગયો. ખાવા પીવાની પણ તકલીફ ઊભી થઈ. અમને ખ્યાલ આવતા અમે જ્યાં સુધી ફીઝાના પપ્પાની સારવાર ચાલે ત્યાં સુધી દર મહિને રાશન આપવાનું શરૃ કર્યું.

સાથે ફીઝા પોતાનું મશીન હોય તો વધારે કામ કરી શકે એમ લાગતા એને મશીન ખરીદીને આપ્યું. હવે એ મોડી રાત સુધી કામ કરી શકે છે.

ફીઝાને મશીન આપવા ઈન્ફોમેટીક સોલ્યુશને મદદ કરી. એ માટે એમના આભારી છીએ.

પણ ફીઝા જેવી દીકરીઓ જોઈને ગૌરવ થાય. હજુ એ કાંઈ પરિવારનો ભાર વહન કરી શકે એવડી મોટી નથી થઈ પણ સંજોગો ઘણું શીખવી દે છે.

આપણા બાળકો ને ફીઝા જેવી દીકરીની જિંદાદીલી બતાવવી જોઈએ. એમને ખ્યાલ આવે કે એ કેટલા નસીબદાર છે.

I had recently travelled to Mehsana. Since we had some time on hand after finishing the scheduled engagements, we decided to meet Narendrabhai. And his growth story amazed me. I witnessed the life-changing transformation a small amount could bring in someone’s life.

Whilst we extended the interest-free loan to Narendrabhai, we also educated him (like all our loanees) on saving some of his income. The saved amount helped Narendrabhai buy a buffalo. Gradually, his cattle wealth grew. Today he has Rs. 1.5 lacs worth of cattle wealth and sells milk worth Rs. 500 daily. He has also leased four bigha farmland to grow cattle food, securing him from the ever-growing rates of cattle feed. Moreover, the amount he has been saving is securely put away in the bank, which he plans to use to build a house.

And all this progress within a span of a short time.

The individuals VSSM offers interest-free loans don’t stay in shiny houses but in huts or mud houses, one of the reasons banks or other lending institutes don’t lend them money. The private money lenders are waiting to grab an audacious amount of interest for any deprived soul that comes their way. However, we have been lending money to very impoverished families, and the positive outcomes have only stunned us.

Narendrabhai resides in  Gandhinagar’s Delwada village. Until VSSM’s Rizwan had met him, Narendrabhai did not have a ration card or a space to call his own. Rizwan helped Narendrabhai and other families like him obtain documents of their identity. We also offered a loan of Rs. 10,000 to help him revamp his livelihood.

After he paid off the initial loan of Rs. 10,000 we gave him one of Rs. 20,000 and then Rs, 30,000. Narendrabhai has not only paid off all his loans but has also regularly donated to VSSM.

“I am happy!” he would tell us every time he met us in Ahmedabad, but to be able to watch his progress did brighten up my day.

We are immensely grateful to our well-wishing donors for helping us support individuals like Narendrabhai.

 હમણાં મહેસાણા જવાનું થયું. અમારુ કામ પત્યું પછી સમય હતો તે દેલવાડાના પહોંચ્યા ને નરેન્દ્રભાઈએ એમની પ્રગતિ જણાવી એ સાંભળીને નવાઈ લાગી. 

નાનકડી રકમ કોઈની જીંદગી કેવી બદલી શકે તે પ્રત્યક્ષ જોયું.

નરેન્દ્રભાઈને અમે લોન આપી સાથે બચતની સમજણ આપેલી તે એ સમજણથી જ એમણે એક ભેંસ ખરીદી. એ વેચી એમાંથી બીજી ને ત્રીજી એમ ઢોર વધારતા ગયા આજે એમની પાસે દોઢ લાખના માલઢોર છે અને રોજનું 500 રૃપિયાનું દૂધ એ ડેરીમાં ભરાવે છે. હમણાં એમણે ચાર વીધા જમીન પણ ઉઘેડમાં રાખી. જેથી ઘાસચારો કરીને ઢોરને ખવડાવી શકે. સૌથી અગત્યનું બેંકમાં બચત પડી છે. જે ઘર બાંધવા એ એકઠી કરે છે.

ટૂંકાગાળામાં નરેન્દ્રભાઈએ આ પ્રગતિ કરી. 

રહેવાનું છાપરાંમાં એટલે દસ હજાર જેવી મૂડી કોઈ વ્યાજવી આપે નહીં. જે લોકો આપવા તૈયાર થાય એનું વ્યાજ મારી નાખે. પણ તમે જુઓ એક ભરોષો કરીએ તો કેવું પરિણામ નીપજે છે. 

ગાંધીનગરના દેલવાડામાં એ રહે. એમની પાસે રહેવા પોતાની જગ્યા નહીં. રેશનકાર્ડ વગેરે પણ નહીં. અમારા રીઝવાનના સંપર્કમાં દેલવાડામાં રહેતા નરેન્દ્રભાઈ ને એમના જેવા બીજા પરિવારો આવ્યા. અમે ધંધો કરવા લોન આપીયે એ નરેન્દ્રભાઈ જાણે ને અમે દસ હજારની પ્રથમ લોન આપી એમાંથી એમણે આ પ્રગતિ કરી. 

પ્રથમ લોનના હપ્તા એમણે નિયમીત ભર્યા. એ પછી બીજી 20,000ની પછી 30,000ની લોન લીધી. આ બધી લોન ભરપાઈની સાથે એ સંસ્થાને નાનકડુ  અનુદાન પણ આપે. 

એ સુખી છે ના સમાચાર એ અમદાવાદ આવે ને મળે ત્યારે આપે. પણ એમને પ્રત્યક્ષ મળ્યા પછી એમની પ્રગતિ જોઈ રાજી થવાયું. 

આ કાર્યમાં અમને મદદ કરતા સ્વજનોના અમે આભારી એમના કારણે આ બધુ શક્ય બને છે.

Vinodbhai is based in Himmatnagar and drives a rented rickshaw to earn his living. However, lack of funds prevented him from fulfilling his wish of buying an autorickshaw. Rented autorickshaw has many drawbacks. The limited timings, maintenance, fuel etc., do not help bring home more than Rs. 200 a day. Vinodbhai believed owning a rickshaw would help him earn more, but buying one was a challenge.

Vinodbhai once shared his concern with VSSM's Tohidbhai (whom he knew well). Tohid assured support under VSSM's Swavlamban program. Consequently, we sanctioned a loan of Rs. 50,000, which he clubbed with his savings to buy a second-hand auto-rickshaw for Rs. 90,000.

"How has life different from what it was?" I had asked Vinodbhai when I had met him on my recent visit to Himmatnagar.

"Earlier, a major chunk of my income from driving rickshaw  was used up in paying the auto's rent. Even if I wished to drive the rickshaw in the evening, I could not because the rented auto had to be returned by 6. Today, I wake up at 5 in the morning and drive the rickshaw to a dairy farm. They give me Rs. 12,000 a month. After the dairy shift, I drive the auto to ferry passengers. I don't have to worry about returning the auto; I can work late and make a profit of Rs. 700 to 800 daily."

Such feedbacks are music to our ears.

VSSM and Vimukt Foundation's Swavlamban Program has extended interest-free loans to more than 5000 individuals. The loans are g to help the poor individuals reinvent and revamp their traditional livelihoods. The support has helped many families uplift their economic condition. વિનોદભાઈ હીંમતનગરમાં ભાડાની રીક્ષા ચલાવે. પોતાની રીક્ષા લેવાની ઈચ્છા ખરી પણ એ માટે પાસે પૂરતા પૈસા નહીં. વળી ભાડાની રીક્ષામાં ઈચ્છીત ધંધો પણ ન કરી શકે. મુળ રીક્ષા સવારે છ વાગે મળે ને સાંજ છ વાગે પાછી આપવી પડે. પાછુ ગેસ ભરાવતા અને રીક્ષાનું રોજનું ભાડુ આપતા બસો અઢીસો રૃપિયા માંડ હાથમાં આવે..

પોતાની રીક્ષા થાય તો નફો વધારે થાય એવું એ સમજે પણ પોતાની રીક્ષા લેવી કેવી રીતે? અમારા કાર્યકર તોહીદભાઈ સાથે વિનોદભાઈને સારો પરીચય તે એમણે એક વખત પોતાની મૂંઝવણ તોહીદભાઈને કહી. અમારા સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત તમને લોન આપીશુંની તોહીદભાઈએ ખાત્રી આપી ને પચાસ હજારની લોન કરી આપી. એમની પાસે થોડી બચત પડી હતી એ બચત અને અમારી લોન એમ કરીને એમણે 90,000ની જૂની રીક્ષા ખરીદી.

હમણાં હીંમતનગર જવાનું થયું ત્યારે વિનોદભાઈને મળવાનું થયું. અમે પુછ્યું પહેલાંની ને અત્યારની  જિંદગીમાં શું ફેર છે?

જવાબમાં એમણે કહ્યું, “પહેલાં જે કમાતો એ ભાડામાં જતુ રેતું, મરજી વધારે ધંધો કરવાની હોય તોય રીક્ષા પાસે નહોતો રાખી શકતો. આજે હું સવારે પાંચ વાગે ઊઠુ છુ. સવારે એક ડેરીમાં રીક્ષા બાંધી દીધી છે. તે એના મને મહિને 12,000 મળે. સવારનો એ ધંધો પતે પછી આખો દિવસ રીક્ષા ફેરવું. સાંજે રીક્ષા આપવાની ચિંતા નહીં આમ ધંધો મળે ત્યાં સુધી કરુ. ગેસનો ખર્ચ કાઢતા 700 થી 800 નો વકરો થાય છે”

સાંભળીને રાજી થવાયું..

I have accepted to work for others, and that I will do till the end of my life!

Becharbhai is a person whose own financial health is poor yet has committed himself to the path of working for others and does it with all his heart!

If his loading rickshaw needs to be used for the service of others, he responds, “I will not take the hiring cost, just pay the fuel charges!” And it was this statement that had introduced us.

VSSM provides interest-free loans and tool support to nomadic and marginalised families. As part of the initiative, we give handcarts to individuals in need and Surendranagar based  Darshanbhai of Praful Cycles has agreed to build them for us at no profit. We had to give away some handcarts to families living in Ahmedabad. Becharbhai had ferried these handcarts from Surendranagar to Ahmedabad when VSSM’s Bhargav introduced him saying, “he is refusing to take rental charges; wants us to pay the fuel charges only.

“I start my rickshaw only after I have fed the dogs of my lane. I also do Gau Sewa. During the deadly second wave, I worked to ferry the dead from the civil hospital and ensure they were respectfully cremated,” Becharbhai talked about his endeavours.

Becharbhai aspired to buy a bigger vehicle but lacked funds. So we gave him an interest-free loan of Rs. 70,000, and the balance was offered as an interest-free loan by his well-wishing friends in Surendranagar. The funds helped him buy the vehicle seen in the image.

Once again, he was at our office with more handcarts loaded in the new vehicle.

“Happy now?” I asked Becharbhai.

“Ben, now I will be able to be of  more service to others!” he replied.

Becharbhai is a gem of Surendranagar, and we are glad to know such a noble soul.

આ વાત એક વખતે જેના ઘરમાં એક સાંધતા તેર તુટે એવી પરિસ્થિતિ હતી તેવા સુરેન્દ્રનગરના બેચરભાઈએ કરી. આમ તો હાલેય એમની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ એવી કાંઈ સબળ નહીં પણ સેવાની ભાવના ભારોભાર..

એમની પાસે લોડિંગ રીક્ષા. આ રીક્ષા સેવાના કાર્યોમાં વાપરવાનું કોઈ કહે તો, કહે ગાડીમાં ખાલી ગેસ ભરાવી દેજો. ભાડુ નથી લેવું. આ ભાડુ ન લેવાની વાતથી જ અમારો પરીચય થયો. 

મૂળ અમે વંચિત વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારોમાંથી આર્થિક સ્થિતિ અત્યંત નબળી હોય તેવા વ્યક્તિઓને પોતે સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરી શકે તે માટે વિવિધ સાધનો આપીએ જેમાંની એક હાથલારી પણ..

આ હાથલારી અમને સુરેન્દ્રગરમાંથી પ્રફુલ સાયકલ સ્ટોરવાળા દર્શનભાઈ જેઓ એક રૃપિયાનો નફો લીધા વગર અમને બનાવી આપે તેમની પાસેથી ખરીદીએ. અમદાવાદમાં રહેતા કેટલાક પરિવારોને અમારે લારી આપવાની હતી.

જે સુરેન્દ્રનગરથી લાવવાનું બેચરભાઈએ કર્યું ને એ વખતે અમારા કાર્યકર ભાર્ગવે એમનો પરિચય કરાવ્યો ને કહ્યું એમણે ખાલી ગેસ ભરાવવા કહ્યું. ભાડુ નથી જોઈતું. 

એ પછી બેચરભાઈએ કરેલા સેવાકાર્યોની ઘણી વાતો થઈ. જેમાં એમણે કહ્યું, મારી ગાડીનો સેલ સવારે મારી શેરીના કૂતરાઓને દૂધ પીવડાવ્યા પછી જ વાગે. ગાયોની સેવા કરવાની કે કોરોનાની બીજી લહેર વખતે મૃતકોને સીવીલમાંથી સ્મશાન લઈ જઈ સન્માનપૂર્વક અગ્નિદાહ આપવાનું હોય એ બધુ કરવામાં બેચરભાઈ ક્યાંય પાછા નથી પડ્યા. આ એ સમય હતો જ્યારે સ્વજનો પણ આધા રહેતા. 

બેચરભાઈની ઈચ્છા મોટું સાધન ખરીદવાની પણ તે માટે પૈસા નહીં. અમે એમને સીત્તેર હજાર વગર વ્યાજે લોન પેટે આપ્યા ને બાકીના 

સુરેન્દ્રનગરમાં રહેતા એમના મિત્રોએ એમની સેવાપારાયણ વૃતિ જોઈને વગર વ્યાજે લોન પેટે આપ્યા. 

આમ ફોટોમાં દેખાય એ ગાડી એમણે ખરીદી.

નવી ગાડીમાં પાછી અમારા માટે લારીઓ લઈને એ આવ્યા.. એ વખતે એમને કહ્યું, બેચરભાઈ રાજી.. તો એમણે કહ્યું,બેન હવે વધારે સેવા થાશે...

આવા બેચરભાઈ સુરેન્દ્રનગરનું હીર છે. ને એમના જેવા માણસનો પરિચય હોવાનું ગર્વ છે...

ફોટોમાં નેવી બ્લુ કલરના શર્ટવાળા બેચરભાઈ ને બીજા બેમાં એક ભાગર્વ ને અન્ય એક તેમના મિત્ર જેઓ સતત તેમને મદદ કરે..
