 Things get started with small steps or actions, no matter how small they are. Bhurabhai Lakhabhai Vadee (Vasfoda Vadee) started with making bamboo baskets and today, he has his own shop of ready made clothes..

As life progress, one learns and acquires skills in the process. Bhurabhai wanted to expand his bamboo basket business and was in need of money for it. At that time he met with Maheshbhai (VSSM worker) and put forward his wish to avail an interest free loan of RS 15,000/- to expand his business. The loan helped increase his income and he was able to repay the loan timely. Bhurabhai's savings increased which helped him gain confidence and he started to sell things made of plastic. But he was in need of money to continue the plastic business and got an interest free loan of 30, 000/- 

He got a good profit margin through his plastic business. Bhurabhai's son coaxed him to open a store of ready made clothes near their house. They had good savings and plus were able to pay the loan without any strain. 

During the floods in 2017, Bhurabhai suffered great loss in business and requested VSSM to give him a loan so that he can recover the loss and be able to get back on his feet. 

Bhurabhai requested for a loan of 70, 000/- in order to get back on his feet and VSSM gave him a third loan to recover losses and expand his business. He added his own savings to the loan amount and with his son opened a store of ready made clothes and is able to repay the loan on timely basis. 

We, at VSSM, are happy for him and wish him the best for all the steps that he takes forward. We would also like to thank the donors who enable us to help people like Bhurabhai.

Families of Nomadic Kangasiya community attained self-reliant under the guidance of VSSM.

In the List of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes declared by Gujarat State, out of the 146 communities, Kangsiya is one of them. This community is traditional engaged in wooden & horn made artistic items usually used in artificial jewellery making. These handmade crafts and carving done on these items are durable and long lasting.

Today the demand and supply for these items, both are less, as due to machine made and good finished products available at lesser prices. Families belonging to these communities started selling cosmetic products and artificial jewelleries to support their livings. But to start this venture they required some working capital on hand, buying in bulk from town side market would cost more & initial borrowing at heavy interest drags them into debt trap.

Members of these families staying under one roof and happily doing their business under the guidance of VSSM.

These families today neither have alternate skills or education or funds to venture into other occupations. If one has to work towards the rehabilitation the occupations of these nomadic communities, it is crucial to mentor and guide them towards adapting alternate livelihoods. The best solution was to rebuilding the livelihoods by lending them some funds to start their own ventures.

Five families of this community were funded interest free loan of Rs. 20000/- each during the festival season. Their dedication & understanding helped them to earn more profits and repay the loan timely. Considering their passion and commitments VSSM again funded them with 30,000/- loan to each family. During the monsoon season the condition of their home was dripping day by day they again approached VSSM for repairs of their houses, we granted them 30,000/- interest free loan to rebuild and renovate their house.

Today 85 members of 10 families are staying in this house and all these individuals are making tremendous efforts to make their businesses and lives successful. Under the guidance of VSSM these families have benefited with their independent earnings their own home & importantly relive from debt trap.

Naranbhai Devipujak with the statues they create 

Naranbhai Devipujak stays in Rajkot along with his wife and son. Their son works in a hotel, earning Rs. 3000 a month and it is this money that maintains the family. Naranbhai is skilled at making statues but starting an independent business of making statues requires capital investment, which Naranbhai did not have. Hence, Naranbhai works as a daily labour at one of the units that makes statues, finding work only during the season rest of the year he just whiles away his time….Since VSSM has worked with these families, Naranbhai knew VSSM, he requested a loan of Rs. 20,000 for making the statues for the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. He made statues for the festival of Ganesha Chaturthi and Navratri.

Normally, one has to start making the statues before almost 4 months but Naranbhai requested for loan quite late and he just had one and half months of time left. But he still managed to make profit of Rs. 10,000!! What to do with the money was the question he asked VSSM’s Kanubhai. Money management is not a subject the nomads are comfortable with. Since he also is skilled at hand making various knotted ropes for cattle he was advised to do so. With Rs. 10,000 he bought threads and strings to make ropes. He now works from home earning Rs. 50 to Rs. 150 everyday. He is delighted with this new found financial freedom. “ You don’t just help us start a business, but also on how to do good in business. We will never forget your help and support in this life,” say a rather relieved and happy Naranbhai.

નારણભાઈ મારવાડી દેવીપૂજક પત્ની અને એક દીકરા સાથે રાજકોટમાં રહે. દીકરો હોટલમાં કામ કરવા જાય અને મહીને રૂ.૩,૦૦૦ પગાર આવે એમાંથી એમનું ઘર ચાલે. નારણભાઈ મૂર્તિ બનાવવાનું કામ જાણે પણ એમાં મૂડી રોકાણ જોઈએ. એ નહોવાથી બીજા લોકો મૂર્તિ બનાવે એમના ત્યાં દાળિયા મજૂર તરીકે મૂર્તિની સિઝનમાં કામે જાય. બાકીના સમયમાં એમની ભાષામાં કહીએ તો ‘નવરાં’. રાજકોટમાં રહેતાં આ પરિવારો સાથે vssm કામ કરે. નારણભાઈએ આ વખતે ગણેશ ચતુર્થી પહેલાં મૂર્તિ બનાવવા vssm પાસેથી લોનની માંગણી કરી અને આપણે વગર વ્યાજે રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ની લોન આપી. જેમાંથી એમણે ગણેશ અને નવરાત્રીને ધ્યાનમાં રાખીને માતાજીની મૂર્તિ બનાવવાનું કર્યું.

આમ તો લોન માટે એમણે ખુબ મોડેથી અરજી કરી. દોઢ જ મહિનો સીઝનમાં બાકી હતો છતાં એમણે જૂની મૂર્તિ લાવીને એના ઉપર કામ કરીને રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦નો ચોખ્ખો નફો કર્યો. આ પૈસાનું શુ કરવું એ પાછું એમણે vssmના કાર્યકર અને એમના પ્રશ્નો સંદર્ભે કામ કરતાં કનુભાઈને પૂછ્યું. નારણભાઈ દોરડામાંથી રાંઢવા, બળદ અને ભેંસ માટે મોયડા, જોતર બનાવવાનું જાણે અને ક્યારેક ક્યારેક એ આ કામ કરી પણ લે. કનુભાઈએ રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ માંથી દોરી લાવીને ઘેર બેઠા આ કામ શરુ કરવા કહ્યું અને નારણભાઈએ આ કામ આરંભ્યું.. એમની આવડત એટલી સરસ છે અને એમને મજા પણ પડે છે. રોજના રૂ.૫૦ થી લઈને રૂ.૧૫૦ સુધીનું કામ એ કરવા માંડ્યા છે. એ ખુબ રાજી છે એ કહે છે, ‘તમે ધંધો કરવામાં તો મદદ કરો જ છો પણ એ ધંધામાં આગળ કેમ અવાય એ પણ શીખવાડો છો. અમે જીવશું ત્યાં લગણ તમારો ઉપકાર નહિ ભૂલીએ અને અમે ખુબ કામ કરીશું.’ 

દરેક પરિવારો પોતાની ક્ષમતા પ્રમાણે સદ્ધર થઈ રહ્યાં છે જેનો આનંદ છે.

Deepakram handcrafting his products 

Deepakram Gadaliyaa and his family reside in Rajkot’s Ghanteshwar locality. He earns his living making iron tools and kitchen appliances just as his forefathers did. Making and selling these goods requires him to move from village to village. As a result of such constant wandering he was unable to get his identity proofs while his fellow community members had acquired the required documents. VSSM has even extended financial support to many of the settled Gadaliyaa families. Deepakram approached VSSM to help him acquire his identity documents. 

VSSM’s Kanubhai recommended him for a loan from VSSM. With a Rs.10,000 loan Deepakram bought iron in bulk at wholesale rates  and a linkage with the seller was established. Now Deepakram does not require to go selling his products, he sells his products at the same rate he retailed to the merchant and makes good profit. He is saved from wandering to sell his stuff and can focus on production. 

One of the pre-condition of applying for a loan from VSSM and a basic criteria for eligibility is that the applicant must be addiction free. Addiction to alcohol amongst Gadaliyaa men is rampant, VSSM has given loans to a lot of Gadaliyaa families. These men have given up their addictions after receiving the loan.  One day there were a few guests in the settlement from Rajasthan. The men had their  round of alcohol. Just then Kanubhai happen to visit the settlement and saw the men with their drinks. "Henceforth I will never help with any work in this settlement,” declared Kanubhai and left. The residents kept calling Kanubhai till 10 in the night but he refuced to speak to them. In the morning Panetarben called Kanubhai, “we are extremely sorry for what happened yesterday. every one is repenting, we broke your trust in us, kindly put that faith for one last time. Don’t help us, but please be with us. Please Kanubhai,” she pleaded sorry on behalf of the community. Pantarben has also been given a loan by VSSM. Later Kanubhai went to the settlement and everyone said sorry to him. This incident happened a while ago and everyone has completely left alcohol and are experiencing the benefits of staying sober.

રાજકોટમાં ઘંટેશ્વર વિસ્તારમાં દીપકરામ ગાડલિયા પરિવાર સાથે છાપરામાં રહે. બાપદાદાનો પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય લોખંડમાંથી વિવિધ ઓજારો બનાવવાનો દીપકરામ કરે. તવી, તાવેતા, કુહાડી, દાતરડાં, ખુરપી વગેરે બનાવે અને ગામેગામ ફરી વેચે. ગાડલીયા વસાહતમાં રહેતાં અન્ય પરિવારો હવે રાજકોટમાં જ સ્થાઈ રહીને વ્યવસાય કરતા થયા છે. vssm દ્વારા એમને વ્યવસાય માટે લોન પણ આપવામાં આવી છે. પણ દીપકરામ સ્થાઈ રહે નહિ એટલે એમને પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો પણ મળે નહિ. બાળકો ભણવા પણ જાય નહિ. પણ ઘંટેશ્વરમાં રહેતાં તમામ પરિવારોને પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો મળ્યા પછી દીપકરામે પોતાને પણ વ્યવસાય માટે અને પુરાવા મેળવવા મદદ કરવા વિનંતી કરી. 

કનુભાઈએ એમને લોખંડના ઓજારો બનાવવા સામટું લોખંડ ખરીદવા માટે vssmમાંથી રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ ની લોન અપાવી અને સ્થાનિક વેપારી સાથે એમનુ જોડાણ પણ કરાવ્યું જેથી બનાવેલો સમાન વેચવા માટે બહાર ના જવું પડે. દિપકરામ જે ભાવે ગામે ગામ ફરીને સમાન વેચતા એજ ભાવે રાજકોટના દુકાનદારને એ વેચે છે. નફો પણ પ્રમાણમાં ઠીક ઠીક થાય છે. 

vssm દ્વારા જે પરિવારોને લોન આપવામાં આવે છે એ પરિવારો વ્યસન મુક્ત હોવા જ જોઈએ એવો આપણો આગ્રહ છે. ગાડલિયા પરિવારમાં આપણે અગાઉ પણ લોન આપી છે. અહિયાં દારૂનું વ્યસન મોટાભાગના પુરુષો કરે પણ લોન લીધા પછી સૌએ એ છોડી દીધું. એક દિવસ રાજસ્થાનથી વસાહતમાં મહેમાન આવ્યાં અને બધા જ પુરુષો દારૂ પી ગયા. કનુભાઈ પણ એજ વખતે વસાહતમાં ગયા. એમને ખબર પડી એટલે કનુભાઈએ ‘હવે પછી આ વસાહતના એક પણ કામમાં હું સહભાગી નહિ બનું’ એમ કહીને નીકળી ગયા. વસાહતના લોકોએ રાતના ૧૦ વાગ્યા સુધી કનુભાઈને મનાવવા ફોન કર્યા પણ કનુભાઈએ ફોન પર વાત કરી જ નહિ.. છેવટે સવારે વસાહતમાંથી પાનેતરબહેન કે જેમને vssm માંથી લોન આપવામાં આવી છે એમનો ફોન આવ્યો અને એમણે કહ્યું, ‘કનુભાઈ કાલની આખી રાત બધાની પસ્તાવામાં ગઈ. તમારો ભરોષો અમે તોડ્યો છે પણ હવે છેલ્લીવાર ભરોષો કરો. ભલે અમારા કામમાં તમે સહભાગી ના બનો , મદદ ના કરો પણ તમે અમારી સાથે છો એ વાતથી પણ અમને નિરાંત છે. અમને માફ કરો અને ગુસ્સો થુંકી દો.’ તે પછી કનુભાઈ વસાહતમાં ગયા સૌએ માફી માંગી. આ વાતને ઘણો સમય થયો પણ સૌએ વ્યસન સાવ છોડી જ દીધું.. વસાહતના સૌ વ્યસન છોડ્યા-ના ફાયદા પણ સમજ્યા છે.

Babubhai Bajaniyaa of Kuvaradgaum in Patan’s Sankheshawar district sings Bhajan’s - devotional songs, to earn his living. Along with singing Bhajan’s he also has developed a knack of repairing musical instruments. But both these activities weren’t enough to meet family’s financial needs, requiring Babubhai and his wife to work as masons. With three school going kids money has alway been an issue with this family. 

Babubhai got to know about VSSM’s initiative of providing interest free loan to needy but enterprising and hard working individuals from Nomadic communities. Babubhai shared his idea of owning a shop of selling and repairing musical instruments  requesting a loan of Rs. 20,000. VSSM’s Mohanbhai recommended Babubhai’s request to the organisation after understanding the feasibility of his  proposal. 

Babubhai has opened a small kiosk types shop ( as seen in the picture)  in Sankheshwar for sales and repairs of musical instruments. More than sales lot of repair jobs come his way. The folk musicians of the region know him, call up and come to get their instruments repaired. Along with the shop Babubhai continues to work as mason so the income has doubled. “Earlier running the household was an issue so saving for rainy day was out of question whereas he dual income now enables us to save,”confesses Bachubhai.

vssmની મદદથી વિચરતા સમુદાયના બજાણીયા બાબુભાઈ પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર વ્યવસાય કરતા થયા

પાટણ જીલ્લાના શંખેશ્વર તાલુકાના કુવારદગામમાં રહેતાં બાબુભાઈ બજાણિયા ભજન કલાકાર છે. ભજન ગાતા ગાતા તબલાં અને અન્ય સંગીતના સાધનો રીપેર કરવાની સૂઝ પણ બનતી ગઈ. ભજન ગાઈને ઘર ચાલે નહિ એટલે પતિ –પત્ની બંને કડિયા કામ કરે. પરિવારમાં ત્રણ બાળકો અને એ બધા જ ભણે. પણ બાળકોના ભણતરનો અને ઘર ચલાવવાનો ખર્ચ ભેગો કરવો બાબુભાઇને મુશ્કેલ પડે. 

vssm દ્વારા વિચરતા પરિવારોને પગભર થવા સ્વતંત્ર વ્યવસાય કરવા માટે લોન આપવામાં આવે છે એ અંગેના સમાચાર બાબુભાઇને મળ્યાં. એમણે vssmના એ વિસ્તારના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈનો સંપર્ક કર્યો અને પોતે સંગીતના સાધનોની દુકાન નાખવા ઈચ્છે છે અને એ માટે રૂ.૨૦,૦૦૦ની લોન vssmમાંથી મળે તો આખું કામ સરસ થઇ શકે એમ છે એમ એમણે જણાવ્યું. મોહનભાઈએ બાબુભાઈ ક્યાં દુકાન કરવાના છે વગેરે વિગતો જાણી અને vssmમાં બાબુભાઈને લોન આપવા સંદર્ભે અરજી કરી.

બાબુભાઈએ નાની દુકાન- આમ તો ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ ગલ્લા જેવી દુકાન શંખેશ્વરમાં કરી અને સૌ બાબુભાઈને ડબગર તરીકે ઓળખવા લાગ્યા છે. તેઓ સંગીતના સાધનો વેચે અને રીપેર પણ કરે. જોકે વેચાણ કરતા રીપેરીંગનું કામ વધારે મળે છે. હવે બાબુભાઈ કાયમ દુકાન પર બેસતાં નથી, હા કામ ના હોય એ સમયે તો એ દુકાન પર જ હોય પણ હવે એ વિસ્તારના તબલચી પાસે બાબુભાઈના નંબર છે એટલે જરૂર પડે બાબુભાઇને ફોન કરીને જ દુકાન ખુલ્લી હોય એવા વખતે તેઓ રીપેરીંગના કામ માટે જાય છે. જયારે બાબુભાઈ પણ દુકાનની સાથે સાથે કડીયાકામ કરે છે એટલે આવક પણ સારી મળે છે. બાબુભાઈ કહે છે, ‘પહેલા બચત નહોતી થતી ઘરનું માંડ પુરુ થતું, પણ હવે બચત થાય છે. મારી પત્ની પણ કામ કરે છે.. એટલે પ્રમાણમાં સારી એવી બચત થાય છે..
