VSSM’s support helps the women from nomadic community purchase a sewing machine and acquire financial independence ..

In 1971 many nomadic families living in Pakistan’s Tharparkar migrated to India.  Later many  of these families settled in Tharad’s Shivnagar area. During the partition of 1947 these families were working in Pakistan and remained there, the boundaries have never ever been able to hold back the wandering nomads who roamed for work across this vast country They were absolutely unaware of the consequences of new boundaries been drawn between a nation that was their home. So they stayed in the region they were working during migration. After the partition  the dynamics changed, they did not feel at home so when during the 1971 war they got an opportunity to migrate they chose to do so and come to India. The Government of India gave them all the rights of a citizen of this country. However they still do not have a house or land, their lifestyles have become sedentary but own no place of their own. The women are skilled with crafts of appliqué, embroidery, sewing etc.

VSSM has been working with these families. 2 years back 90 women received training in appliqué and various other dexterous skills. These trained women began bring job work from the local merchants. Later we also organised a training workshop for tailoring. After the training 8 of these women asked for a loan to purchase a sewing machine. Since they had no savings buying  sewing machine on their own wasn’t possible for them. The assured to pay regular EMIs of the  loan. VSSM decided to support these 8 women. Teh stories of these 8 women are narrated below. 

Inspite of wanting to study well 18 years old Aarti Goswami had to drop out of school because of weak financial condition of her family. Aarti’s father is truck driver addicted to alcohol, contributing absolutely nothing to run the house. The house functioned on the income of her mother Shardaben who took embroidery jobs.  Aarti began contributing to the family income by taking job work for appliqué. Tailoring was a skill Aarti planned to acquire hence, when she got an opportunity to do that she quickly  enrolled for the VSSM organised tailoring training. Earlier it was difficult to meet the family expenses but with Shardaben and Aarti both earning decent incomes the family’s financial well-being has improved. They mother-daughter duo also save money and  deposit the saving in a bank. Recently Aarti got engaged and Shardaben has decided to give the sewing machine on which Aarti works in dowry!! They have began shopping for the wedding from the money they have saved.  These women have  gained financial independence in the true sense.

19 years Ramila Gadaliyaa’s family are ironsmiths. The income from the family profession is not enough to sustain her large family. Ramila enrolled herself for the tailoring training by VSSM. After 2 months of leaning Ramila couldn’t learn enough to make her an independent tailor. Her friend Aarti Goswami who had also taken training at VSSM helped Ramila master the skill. Ramila’s family was know to VSSM  so on their request VSSM gave them  loan to buy a sewing machine. Ramila began taking independent tailoring jobs. After her marriage Ramila took the machine along and her income is supporting the family she has married into.

25 year old Pawanben Goswai is a mother of 4 kids. Her husband drives auto rickshaw in Tharad but contributes absolutely nothing in running the household. Pawanben a skilled appliqué craftswomen decided to learn tailoring with an objective to earn a decent income. Pawanben takes up tailoring jobs for stitching traditional Rajasthani and is so skilled at creating the outfits that everyone insists she tailors their outfits. Pawanben is raising her children single handedly, educating them and running the household without any financial support of her husband. The income is so good that she is easily able to pay instalments of VSSM’s loan.

Shilpaben Goswami too learnt tailoring through the training classes by VSSM. Her husband Govindbhai works at a brick making factory and earns Rs. 3,000 a month. The income is barely enough to feed the family of six. The couple has three daughters and a son. The financial crunch made the couple decide to remove the eldest daughter from school but the income from Shipaben’s tailoring jobs has helped them change their decision. The family income has increased considerably and their daughter continues to go to school. Shilpaben is skilled at sewing lace on the odhni’s adorned by Marwari women. They are thankful to VSSM for the support it has provided to them. 

Gomiben Goswami witnessed a considerable improvement in her family’s financial health after she began tailoring at home. After completing her tailoring training Gomiben requested VSSM to support her buy a sewing machine. SHe stitches blouses and does appliqué on bedsheets  when ever she has extra time on hand.  Her financial condition is gradually improving.

Anitaben lost her husband a few years back. The couple has two children. Anitaben worked as a assistant at an ICDS center but lost her job because of her continued illness. VSSM and Tharad municipal corporation had organised a tailoring workshop for widowed women staying in and around Tharad. Antigen received tailoring training through this workshop. After the workshop she took up a job at a tailor’s shop but felt the need to own her own sewing machine to improve her income. She requested VSSM’s Shardaben to support her with loan for buying a sewing machine. We supported her with a loan to purchase a sewing machine. She is skilled in sewing ladies costumes.  Teh income is enough to sustain her family. Antigen currently lives in a rented house but plans to build her own small house and educate both her kids well.

Guddiben (Samdaben) left her husbands home after a marital discord. She came back to stay with her aging mother. Her mother took jobs of making appliqué bedsheets so Guddiben also decided to continue doing the same.  The feeling that the income can be better if she honed the craft of tailoring always stayed in the back of her mind. So when she got an opportunity to learn tailoring through VSSM’s tailoring training she quickly enrolled herself. She has very good skill of sewing the skirts worn by Rajput women in the region. VSSM has also supported her in buying a sewing machine. Income has increased considerably. She also takes up appliqué jobs from the local merchants and gives it to other women in her vicinity. We are glad she is taking the initiative to improve the lot of other women around her.  

Nanuben inlaws pushed her out of their family home after the death of her husband. She has two young daughters studying in 9th and 7th grades. The three now stay in a kuccha structure in Tharad. Nankeen learnt tailoring in VSSM organised training and later VSSM provided her loan to by a sewing machine. She tailors salwar-kameez. Income is good the family is able to manage its needs and pay of VSSM’s loan from the income.

પાકિસ્તાનના થરપારકરમાં રહેતાં ઘણા પરિવારો ૧૯૭૧માં પાકિસ્તાનમાંથી હિજરત કરીને ભારતમાં આવ્યાં. બનાસકાંઠાના થરાદના શિવનગર વિસ્તારમાં હિજરત કરીને આવેલા ઘણા પરિવારો સ્થાઈ રહેતાં થયા. સદીઓથી પોતાના વ્યવસાય અર્થે ફરતા આ પરિવારોને સીમાડાના વિભાજનથી શુ થશે એની કલ્પના નહોતી. એ ક્યાં સીમાડાથી બંધાયેલા હતા? જ્યાં કામ મળે અને જેમને આ સમુદાયોની સેવાની જરૂર હોય ત્યાં આ પરિવારો પહોચી જતા. અને એટલે જ દેશના ભાગલા વખતે તેઓ પાકિસ્તાનના જે વિસ્તારમાં કામ ધંધા અર્થે ફરતા ત્યાં જ કાયમ રહેવાનું થઇ પડ્યું. પણ ફાવે નહિ અને આખરે ૧૯૭૧ના યુદ્ધ વખતે થયેલી હિજરતમાં તેઓ ભારતમાં આવીને રહ્યા. સરકારે એમને દેશના નાગરિક તરીકેના તમામ આધારો આપ્યા. પણ તેઓ જ્યાં રહે છે એ જગ્યા સરકારે હજુ એમને આપી નથી. પહેલાં વીચરતું જીવન જીવતાં આ પરિવારો હવે થરાદમાં સ્થાઈ રહે છે. ભરતકામ, પેચવર્ક, સિલાઈકામમાં આ પરિવારો પાવરધા છે..

vssm આ પરિવારો સાથે કામ કરે છે. બે વર્ષ પહેલાં ૯૦ બહેનોને પેચવર્કની તાલીમ આપણે આપી હતી એ પછી જુદી જુદી કુશળતા સંદર્ભની તાલીમો આ પરિવારો માટે vssm દ્વારા થઇ. તાલીમ મેળવેલી બહેનોને સ્થાનિક વેપારી કામ આપે અને એમનું ગુજરાન ચાલે. બે વર્ષ પહેલાં સિલાઈકામની તાલીમ આપ્યા પછી ૮ બહેનોએ સિલાઈ માટેના મશીનની માંગણી કરી. એમની પાસે બચત નહિ એટલે સિલાઈ મશીન ખરીદી શકે એવી ક્ષમતા નહિ પણ vssmમાંથી વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપે તો ધીમેધીમે ભરીશું એવી લાગણી ખરી. એટલે આપણે ૮ બહેનોને લોન આપી. 

આરતી ગૌસ્વામી ઉંમર ૧૮ વર્ષ. પરિવારની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ એટલી સારી નહિ એટલે ભણવાનું ખાસ થઇ શક્યું નહિ. પેચવર્ક ખુબ સારું કામ કરે અને એમાં જો સિલાઈકામ આવડી જાય તો ચારચાંદ લાગી જાય. આપણા ક્લાસમાં તે સિલાઈકામ શીખ્યા. આરતીની માં શારદાબેન પણ ભરતકામ કરે. પતિ ટ્રક ચલાવે પણ દારૂની લત થઇ ગયેલી એટલે ઘરે પૈસા ના આપે ઉલટાનું ઘરમાંથી શારદાબહેનની કમાણીના પૈસા પણ જબરજસ્તીથી લઇ જાય. ક્યારેક ઘર ચલાવવું મુશ્કેલ બની જતું. પણ હવે શારદાબેનની સાથે સાથે આરતી પણ કમાતી થઇ છે. હવે માં- દીકરી બચત ઘરમાં ના રાખતા બેંકમાં કરતા થયા છે. આરતીના લગ્ન પણ નક્કી થયા છે.. અને દીકરીને દાયજામાં આ સિલાઈમશીન કે જેના પર આરતી કામ કરે છે આપવાનું પણ એમણે નક્કી કર્યું છે. આરતીની કમાણીમાંથી જ આરતીના લગ્નની વસ્તુ પણ ખરીદી છે.. આમ ખરા અર્થમાં શારદાબેન અને આરતી બંને પગભર થયા છે. 

રમીલા ગાડલિયા(લુહાર) ઉંમર ૧૯ વર્ષ. પિતા લોખંડમાંથી વિવિધ ઓજારો બનાવવાનું કામ કરે. પરિવારમાં સભ્ય સંખ્યા મોટી. એટલે માંડ માંડ પૂરું થાય. રમીલા રૂ.૧૫૦૦ ભરીને થરાદમાં ચાલતા સીવણ ક્લાસમાં સિલાઈકામ શીખવા માટે ગયા. બે મહિના તાલીમ લીધી પણ સિલાઈકામ બરાબર આવડ્યું નહિ. આરતી જેને vssm દ્વારા સીલાઈની તાલીમ આપવામાં આવી હતી એ રમીલાની બહેનપણી. એટલે આરતીએ રમીલાને સિલાઈ કામ શીખવાડ્યું. રમીલાનો પરિવાર પણ vssm સાથે સંકળાયેલો એટલે સિલાઈ મશીન ખરીદવા માટે લોન આપવા એમણે વિનંતી કરી. આપણે મશીન આપ્યું અને રમીલા પણ સરસ કામ કરતી થઇ ગઈ. એના લગ્ન પણ હમણાં જ થયાં. સાસરે પણ સિલાઈકામ કરે છે અને પરિવારને આર્થિક રીતે મદદરૂપ થાય છે. 

પવનબેન ગૌસ્વામી ઉંમર ૨૫. પરિવારમાં ચાર બાળકો. પતિ થરાદમાં રીક્ષા ચલાવે પણ એમની આવકમાંથી એક રૂપિયો પણ ઘરે મળે નહિ. પેચવર્કનું કામ કરે અને સિલાઈકામ પણ શીખ્યા. અત્યારે હાલમાં રાજસ્થાનના બહેનોના જે પારંપરિક ડ્રેસ પહેરે છે એ બનાવવાનું કામ કરે છે. એક ડ્રેસની સિલાઈના રૂ.૪૦૦ મળે છે પવનબેનના કામની કુશળતા ખુબ છે એટલે લોકો એમના ત્યાં સિવડાવવાનો આગ્રહ પણ રાખે છે. પતિની આવકની ઈચ્છા રાખ્યા વગર ચાર બાળકોને ભણાવવાનું અને ઘરનું પણ પુરુ કરે છે. vssmમાંથી મળેલી લોન પણ આરામથી ભરપાઈ કરે છે. 

શિલ્પાબેન ગૌસ્વામી પણ vssm દ્વારા આયોજિત સિલાઈ ક્લાસમાં સિલાઈકામ શીખ્યા. એમના પતિ ગોવિંદભાઈ ઇંટો બનાવવાની ફેકટરીમાં મજૂરી કરે એમને માસિક રૂ.૩,૦૦૦ પગાર મળે. આર્થિક ભીંસ ખુબ રહેતી.  પરિવારમાં ત્રણ દીકરી અને એક દીકરો. મોટી દીકરી ભણતી પણ આર્થિક મુશ્કેલીના કારણે એનું ભણવાનું છોડાવવાનું તેઓએ નક્કી કરી લીધું હતું પણ શિલ્પાબેન સિલાઈકામ શરુ કરતાં અને પરિવારની આવકમાં વધારો થતાં એમણે દીકરીને આગળ ભણાવવાનું ચાલુ રખાવ્યું. મારવાડી ઓઢણીમાં લેસ લગાડવામાં શિલ્પાબેન ખુબ કુશળ છે.  vssm એમની સાથે છે એનો આ પરિવાર આનંદ વ્યક્ત કરે છે.

ગોમીબેન ગોસ્વામી પરિવારમાં બે બાળકો. પતિ છૂટક મજૂરી કરે. ઘર ચાલવાનું મુશ્કેલ પડે. ગોમીબેન પણ સિલાઈકામ શીખ્યા અને સિલાઈ મશીન માટે vssm દ્વારા લોન આપવામાં આવી. તેઓ બ્લાઉઝ બનાવે છે અને સમય મળે પેચવર્કની ચાદર બનાવવાનું કામ પણ કરે છે. તેમની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ સુધરી છે. 

અનિતાબેન વિધવા છે. પરિવારમાં બે બાળકો છે. આંગણવાડીમાં તેડાઘર બહેન તરીકે કામ કરતાં પણ એમની તબિયત ખરાબ થતાં એમને ત્યાંથી છુટા કરવામાં આવ્યાં. તે પછી થરાદ અને એની આસપાસમાં રહેતી અને  વિધવા હોય તેવી બહેનોનો સીવણ ક્લાસ નગરપાલિકા થરાદ અને vssm દ્વારા થયો હતો. જેમાં અનિતાબહેનને સીલાઈની તાલીમ મળી. એ પછી એક દુકાનમાં કારીગર તરીકે જવા માંડ્યા પણ પોતાનું મશીન હોય તો પોતે સારું કમાઈ શકે એવો વિશ્વાસ. આ અંગે vssmના કાર્યકર શારદાબેન સાથે એમણે વાત કરી મશીન માટે vssm માંથી લોન આપવા વિનંતી કરી. vssm દ્વારા વિચરતા અને જરૂરિયાતમંદ પરિવારોને પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરવા માટે વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપવામાં આવે છે. આપણે અનીતાબેનને પણ લોન આપી અને એમણે મશીન લઈને સિલાઈનું કામ શરુ કર્યું. બહેનોના કપડાં સીવવામાં એ કુશળ છે. પરિવારનું પાલન પોષણ પણ સરસ રીતે કરે છે. હાલમાં ભાડાના મકાનમાં રહે છે ભવિષ્યમાં પોતાનું મકાન કરવું છે અને બાળકોને ખુબ ભણાવવા છે એવો એમનો નિર્ધાર છે. 

 

ગુડ્ડી બહેન (સમદાબેન) ગૌસ્વામી. પતિ સાથે વિખવાદ થતાં તેઓ પિયરમાં રહે છે. પણ પિયરમાં વૃદ્ધ માં સિવાય બીજું કોઈ નહિ. માં પણ પેચવર્કની ચાદરો બનાવે પોતે પણ એ કામ કરવા માંડ્યા. પણ સિલાઈ કામ શીખે તો ખુબ કામ કરી શકાય એવી એમની લાગણી. vssm દ્વારા ચાલતા ક્લાસમાં એ સિલાઈકામ શીખ્યા. રાજપૂત બહેનો પહેરે એવા ચણીયા બનાવવાની એમની કુશળતા ખુબ સારી. vssmમાંથી લોન લીધી અને મશીન ખરીદ્યું. હવે સારી એવી આવક થાય છે તેઓ સીલાઈની સાથે સાથે પેચવર્કનું કામ વેપારી પાસેથી લઈને બીજી બહેનોને પણ આપે છે આમ કામ વિસ્તર્યું છે. જેનો એમને ખુબ આનંદ છે.

નાનુબહેન વિધવા છે. પરિવારમાં બે દીકરી છે. એક દીકરી ધો.૯ અને બીજી ધો.૭માં ભણે છે. પતિના ગુજરી ગયા પછી સાસરેથી એમને કાઢી મુક્યા. થરાદમાં છાપરું કરીને રહે છે. સિલાઈ ક્લાસમાં આપણે સિલાઈકામ શીખવ્યું અને સિલાઈ મશીન માટે લોન આપી. તેઓ બહેનોના ડ્રેસ બનાવે છે. સારી આવક થાય છે ઘર ચાલે છે અને vssmની લોન પણ ભરાય છે.

Deepakram Gadaliyaa and his family reside in Rajkot’s Ghanteshwar locality. He earns his living making iron tools and kitchen appliances just as his forefathers did. Making and selling these goods requires him to move from village to village. As a result of such constant wandering he was unable to get his identity proofs while his fellow community members had acquired the required documents. VSSM has even extended financial support to many of the settled Gadaliyaa families. Deepakram approached VSSM to help him acquire his identity documents. 

VSSM’s Kanubhai recommended him for a loan from VSSM. With a Rs.10,000 loan Deepakram bought iron in bulk at wholesale rates  and a linkage with the seller was established. Now Deepakram does not require to go selling his products, he sells his products at the same rate he retailed to the merchant and makes good profit. He is saved from wandering to sell his stuff and can focus on production. 

One of the pre-condition of applying for a loan from VSSM and a basic criteria for eligibility is that the applicant must be addiction free. Addiction to alcohol amongst Gadaliyaa men is rampant, VSSM has given loans to a lot of Gadaliyaa families. These men have given up their addictions after receiving the loan.  One day there were a few guests in the settlement from Rajasthan. The men had their  round of alcohol. Just then Kanubhai happen to visit the settlement and saw the men with their drinks. "Henceforth I will never help with any work in this settlement,” declared Kanubhai and left. The residents kept calling Kanubhai till 10 in the night but he refuced to speak to them. In the morning Panetarben called Kanubhai, “we are extremely sorry for what happened yesterday. every one is repenting, we broke your trust in us, kindly put that faith for one last time. Don’t help us, but please be with us. Please Kanubhai,” she pleaded sorry on behalf of the community. Pantarben has also been given a loan by VSSM. Later Kanubhai went to the settlement and everyone said sorry to him. This incident happened a while ago and everyone has completely left alcohol and are experiencing the benefits of staying sober. 

vssm દ્વારા વિચરતા પરિવારોને આપવામાં આવતી લોનથી લોકો વ્યસન મુક્ત થઇ રહ્યા છે

રાજકોટમાં ઘંટેશ્વર વિસ્તારમાં દીપકરામ ગાડલિયા પરિવાર સાથે છાપરામાં રહે. બાપદાદાનો પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય લોખંડમાંથી વિવિધ ઓજારો બનાવવાનો દીપકરામ કરે. તવી, તાવેતા, કુહાડી, દાતરડાં, ખુરપી વગેરે બનાવે અને ગામેગામ ફરી વેચે. ગાડલીયા વસાહતમાં રહેતાં અન્ય પરિવારો હવે રાજકોટમાં જ સ્થાઈ રહીને વ્યવસાય કરતા થયા છે. vssm દ્વારા એમને વ્યવસાય માટે લોન પણ આપવામાં આવી છે. પણ દીપકરામ સ્થાઈ રહે નહિ એટલે એમને પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો પણ મળે નહિ. બાળકો ભણવા પણ જાય નહિ. પણ ઘંટેશ્વરમાં રહેતાં તમામ પરિવારોને પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો મળ્યા પછી દીપકરામે પોતાને પણ વ્યવસાય માટે અને પુરાવા મેળવવા મદદ કરવા વિનંતી કરી. 

કનુભાઈએ એમને લોખંડના ઓજારો બનાવવા સામટું લોખંડ ખરીદવા માટે vssmમાંથી રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ ની લોન અપાવી અને સ્થાનિક વેપારી સાથે એમનુ જોડાણ પણ કરાવ્યું જેથી બનાવેલો સમાન વેચવા માટે બહાર ના જવું પડે. દિપકરામ જે ભાવે ગામે ગામ ફરીને સમાન વેચતા એજ ભાવે રાજકોટના દુકાનદારને એ વેચે છે. નફો પણ પ્રમાણમાં ઠીક ઠીક થાય છે. 

vssm દ્વારા જે પરિવારોને લોન આપવામાં આવે છે એ પરિવારો વ્યસન મુક્ત હોવા જ જોઈએ એવો આપણો આગ્રહ છે. ગાડલિયા પરિવારમાં આપણે અગાઉ પણ લોન આપી છે. અહિયાં દારૂનું વ્યસન મોટાભાગના પુરુષો કરે પણ લોન લીધા પછી સૌએ એ છોડી દીધું. એક દિવસ રાજસ્થાનથી વસાહતમાં મહેમાન આવ્યાં અને બધા જ પુરુષો દારૂ પી ગયા. કનુભાઈ પણ એજ વખતે વસાહતમાં ગયા. એમને ખબર પડી એટલે કનુભાઈએ ‘હવે પછી આ વસાહતના એક પણ કામમાં હું સહભાગી નહિ બનું’ એમ કહીને નીકળી ગયા. વસાહતના લોકોએ રાતના ૧૦ વાગ્યા સુધી કનુભાઈને મનાવવા ફોન કર્યા પણ કનુભાઈએ ફોન પર વાત કરી જ નહિ.. છેવટે સવારે વસાહતમાંથી પાનેતરબહેન કે જેમને vssm માંથી લોન આપવામાં આવી છે એમનો ફોન આવ્યો અને એમણે કહ્યું, ‘કનુભાઈ કાલની આખી રાત બધાની પસ્તાવામાં ગઈ. તમારો ભરોષો અમે તોડ્યો છે પણ હવે છેલ્લીવાર ભરોષો કરો. ભલે અમારા કામમાં તમે સહભાગી ના બનો , મદદ ના કરો પણ તમે અમારી સાથે છો એ વાતથી પણ અમને નિરાંત છે. અમને માફ કરો અને ગુસ્સો થુંકી દો.’ તે પછી કનુભાઈ વસાહતમાં ગયા સૌએ માફી માંગી. આ વાતને ઘણો સમય થયો પણ સૌએ વ્યસન સાવ છોડી જ દીધું.. વસાહતના સૌ વ્યસન છોડ્યા-ના ફાયદા પણ સમજ્યા છે.

Some fundamental guidance, very simle changes in lifestyles and some amazing results in lives of these nomadic Gadaliyaa women……..

To understand this case-story a bit of a history first..……..

After suffering a bitter defeat from Akbar, Maha Rana Pratap left Chittodgadh and so did his loyal men.  Amongst them were the Gadaliya.  The Gadaliya were part of the royal army.  Mana Rana Pratap had vowed to return to Chittodgadh only after he won it back from the Moguls. But this was never to happen as he died soon after and the Gadaliya who had left their homeland never returned back to Marwar. The Gadaliya moved on carts or gada from which their name derives- with the army and were responsible of carrying the required logistics material for sustaining the armies during the war times.  They would set up tents and make or repair the weapons on site. In fact, they were the in-house ironsmiths. After the death of their beloved king the Gadaliyaa Community scattered away. Rajasthan has huge population of this community, where they are known as Gadariya or Gadi Luhar.  They got engaged in making household tools,  agricultural tools, kitchen tools etc.  which required them to travel from village to village.

During the monsoon months the community would have their settlement with the Vanzaras and hence they have picked up lot of their trade skills. These days they have their hands in lot of different trades. Buying and selling bullocks is a trade these community was skilled at. . But with the usage of tractors increasing in agriculture the demand for bullocks has decreased considerably. Along with trading bullocks they hand craft iron tools used for farming and some house-hold usage, they are skilled ironsmiths so many families had continued with this ancestral occupation. The Gadaliyaa in Gujarat are  engaged with either of the trades these days. 

Many Gadaliya families reside in Rajkot’s Ghanteshawar. Their occupation- making and selling tools made from iron. Very hard working but still could barely manage to make ends meet. Sort of daily wage earners who made just enough to buy daily ration. VSSM has been instrument in bringing Voter ID cards to these families just before the previous Loksabha elections. Infact 3,500 nomadic  individuals were allotted Voter ID cards because of VSSM’s efforts partnered with the unflinching support of Gujarat’s Chief Electoral Officer Ms. Anita Karwal.

Kanubhai, VSSM’s team member of rat region,  remains in constant touch with these families. He could very well sense the everyday challenges of these families. With limited money on hand they couldn’t buy enough raw material (tin sheets), the suppliers always gave them retail rather than wholesale rates. Tongs, serrated ladles, flat ladles, stoves, sieve are some of the products made by the Gadaliyaa.  They roam village to village to sell these kitchen tools,at times the merchants would buy these products from them but at a wholesale rate. Shrewd businessmen!!  can’t sell at wholesale price but can always buy at wholesale rate. Whenever the Gadaliyaa asked for good price,  they argued, buy the raw material in bulk (substantial amount) and we shall offer you wholesale price. Buying  material in  bulk requires  decent amount of investment which these families  never have. They do not  earn enough to be able to save for the rainy day.

VSSM decided to extend support to 3 Gadaliyaa Women A Nomadic Tribes of Gujarat Panetarben, Ehsanben and Sevakramben. All these three women are widows. A loan of Rs. 10,000 each was given to these women. VSSM’s Kanubhai helped them sort out their schedule and finances, managing this amount wasn’t easy for them. First he asked them to busy groceries of Rs. 2,000/- each. Food in the house meant no need to go out to sell the stuff on daily basis (which they did earlier for the need to buy food).  With the rest of the  money they bought tin sheets at wholesale rate and all the other stuff needed to begin manufacturing. It was decided to not go and sell stuff until  substantial numbers of items have  been made.  If the  merchants wanted  stuff at a wholesale rate  prices for the same were fixed as well.  

Right now these women are busy making products that will fetch them good rates. The y are hopeful  things will workout well. As Ehsanben says, “Kanubhai has guided us a lot, earlier we would go out to sell products everyday, our spending on commute was also very high, now we save that money, we have also revised our pricing, we are saved from the tedious job of everyday selling. No more are we required to worry about how to keep the kitchen firs bring as there is enough food in the house. Once we start selling he money will begin to roll in. We will bring some more raw material from it, pay the instalment, bring groceries and begin to save for future.  Nobody had ever taught how to manage and plan in such a manner.” 

Normally, we write about individuals  who have been supported by VSSM once some radical change is observed  in their lives. But we felt the need to share this story with you as it reflects how simple and basic guidance can bring  such major change in the lives of people living on the margins, people who are constantly pushed to the end just because they haven’t picked up the tricks of the trade. But its their inherent wisdom accompanied by the astute guidance of VSSM team that is bringing a gradual change in their lives………..

કેટલી નાની વાત પણ એમની સાથે બેસી એમને સમજાવીએ તો કેટલા અદભૂત પરિણામો મળી શકે

ગાડલિયા સમુદાયનો મૂળ વ્યવસાય લોખંડના ઓજારો બનાવવાનો અને ગામે ગામ ફરીને વેચવાનો. ખેતીમાં જરૂરી બળદો વેચવાનું કામ પણ આ પરિવારો કરતાં. બળદો ખરીદીને એને એવા સરસ શણગારી - તૈયાર કરીને વેચવાનાં. બળદ વેચવાની સાથે સાથે તેઓ ખેતી કામમાં વપરાતા ઓજારો વેચવાનું કામ પણ કરતાં. પણ ખેતી માટે હવે ટ્રેક્ટરનો ઉપયોગ ખુબ થવા લાગ્યો છે. એટલે બળદથી ખેતી કરવાનું પ્રમાણ ખુબ ઘટી ગયું છે. તેઓ ખેતીના ઓજારો બનાવવાનું કરતાં આજે કેટલાંક એ કામ પણ કરે છે પણ ઘણા પરિવારો હવે ઘર વપરાશમાં વપરાતી લોખંડની વસ્તુ બનાવીને વેચવાનું કરે છે. મહારાણા પ્રતાપના વફાદાર એવાં ગાડલિયા મૂળ રાજસ્થાનના વતની પણ રાણાપ્રતાપે અકબર સામેની લડાઈ વખતે ચિતોડગઢ છોડ્યું એમની સાથે એમની વફાદાર પ્રજાએ પણ ચિતોડગઢ છોડ્યું. ગાડલિયા એમાંના એક હતાં. રાજસ્થાનમાં એમની ઘણી મોટી વસ્તી છે ત્યાં ગાડરિયા કે ગાડી લુહાર તરીકે તેઓ ઓળખાય છે. ગુજરાતમાં પણ એમની વસ્તી ઘણી છે.

રાજકોટના ઘંટેશ્વરમાં... ગાડલિયા પરિવારો વર્ષોથી રહે. આ પરિવારો  પોતાનો પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય લોખંડમાંથી ઘર વપરાશના સાધનો બનાવીને વેચવાનું કરે. આ પરિવારો ખુબ મહેનતુ. ખુબ કામ કરે છતાં બે ટંકનો રોટલો નિયમિત ભેગો કરવો મુશ્કેલ થઇ જાય. રોજે રોજ પાંચ રૂપિયાનું તેલ. બે રૂપિયાનું મરચું એમ છૂટક સામાન લાવીને રાંધવાનું. vssmના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ આ પરિવારો સાથે કામ કરે. ગત લોકસભાની ચુંટણી વખતે રાજકોટમાં રહેતાં વિચરતાં પરિવારોના આશરે ૩,૫૦૦ લોકોને vssmના કારણે અને મુખ્ય નિર્વાચન અધિકારી શ્રી અનિતાબહેન કરવાલની મદદથી મતદારકાર્ડ મળ્યાં. જેમાં આ ગાડલિયા પરિવારને પણ કાર્ડ મળ્યા હતાં. હવે એમનાં રોજબરોજના પ્રશ્નો સમજવાનું પણ થતું. રૂ.૨૦૦૦ કે ૩૦૦૦ની સગવડ થાય એટલે આ પરિવારો લોખંડનું પતરું લઇ આવે અને એમાંથી ચુલા, ઝારા, ચારણી, તાવેતા, ચીપિયા વગેરે જેવા સાધનો બનાવીને ગામડાંઓમાં ફરીને વેચે કેટલીક વખત તો દુકાનદારો એમની પાસેથી હોલસેલમાં સામાન ખરીદી લે. પણ સરવાળે ખુબ મોંઘુ પડતું. એ જે સામાન લાવતા એ એમને હોલસેલમાં ના મળે અને વેચવાનું હોલસેલમાં? પણ વેપારી કહે, ‘તમે એક સામટો સામાન ખરીદો તો હોલસેલના ભાવે આપું. હવે એકસામટો સામાન ખરીદવા ફદિયા તો જોઈએ ને? વળી બચત તો જીંદગીમાં ક્યારેય કરેલી નહિ. એટલે પાસે મૂડી હોય એમ પણ ના બને. આપણે ત્રણ વ્યક્તિને (૧) પાનેતરબહેન (૨) અહેસાનબહેન અને (૩)સેવકરામને લોન આપવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. બન્ને બહેનો વિધવા છે. પ્રત્યેકને રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ની લોન આપી. અલગ અલગ ગણીએ તો રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ અને ભેગા ગણીએ તો રૂ.૩૦,૦૦૦ થયાં. એમાંથી કનુભાઈએ એમને આયોજન શીખવ્યું. પ્રત્યેક પરિવારના ઘરમાં રૂ.૨,૦૦૦ નું કરિયાણું ભરાવ્યું. જેથી સામાન બનાવીને રોજે રોજ વેચવા જવાની ઝંઝટ ના રહે અને શાંતિથી કામ થઇ શકે. એ પછી ૨૪,૦૦૦ માંથી લોખંડના પતરાં ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ અને જરૂરી હાથા, રીવેટ વગેરે પરચુરણ સામાન હોલસેલના ભાવે ખરીદાવ્યો અને કામ શરુ કરાવ્યું. જ્યાં સુધી ૧૦ થી ૧૫ની સંખ્યામાં સામાન તૈયાર ના થાય ત્યાં સુધી વેચવા નહિ જવાનું અને વેપારીને જથ્થાબંધમાં જોઈએ તો એનો પણ ભાવ- તાલ કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. હાલમાં બધા જ પરિવારો સામાન બનાવવામાં વ્યસ્ત છે.. સારું પરિણામ મળશે એવી આ પરિવારોને આશા છે. અહેસાન બહેન સાથે જયારે વાત થઇ ત્યારે એમણે કહ્યું, ‘અમે રોજ માલ બનાવીને વેચવા જતા એની જગ્યાએ ૮ દિવસથી સામાન બનાવી રહ્યા છીએ. ઘરમાં ખાવા છે એટલે રોજ વેચવા જવાની માથાકૂટ નથી. એટલે રોજે રોજનું ભાડું પણ બચે છે. બસ બે દિવસમાં બધો સામાન થઇ જશે પછી વેપારી પાસે જ જઈશ. સારો ભાવ આપશે તો એને જ વેચી દઈશ અને એમાંથી બીજો સામાન અને કારીયાણું ભરાવી દઈશ. લોનના હપ્તાની રકમ એક બાજુ રાખીશ. થોડી બચત પણ કરવી છે.. અમને કોઈએ વ્યવહાર શીખવાડ્યો જ નહોતો એટલે આ બધું સમજાતું નહોતું પણ કનુભાઈએ સારું સમજાવ્યું..’

આમ તો vssm દ્વારા જેમને લોન આપવામાં આપવામાં આવે છે એમનો વ્યવસાય બરાબર ચાલે પછી જ અમે એમનાં વિષે લખીએ જેથી અમને પણ એમની રોજિંદી જીન્દગીમાં આવેલા બદલાવ વિષે ખ્યાલ આવે પણ ફોટોમાં દેખાય છે એ વ્યક્તિઓ વિષે શરૂઆતથી જ લખવાનું જરૂરી લાગ્યું.. કેટલી નાની વાત છે પણ એમની સાથે બેસી એમને સમજાવીએ તો કેટલા અદભૂત પરિણામો મળી શકાતા હોય છે એનો આ દાખલો છે..

ફોટોમાં સામાન બનાવી રહેલાં ત્રણે પરિવાર..અને એ જે સ્થિતિમાં રહે છે એ જોઈ શકાય છે
