Gadaliya families hopeful of a better tomorrow after VSSM’s intervention…

“There is a pre-condition to sanctioning loan, you must stop buying your ration daily!!”

“But, we do not have enough money to buy our food and groceries in bulk like the moneyed do!! We earn daily hence we need to buy food on daily basis. This is what we have done all our life.”

“We can sanction loan of Rs. 10,000, you will have to buy raw material from Rs. 6,000 to make your iron tools  and groceries worth Rs. 2000 and keep Rs. 2000 on hand.  We will give loan to 10 Gadaliya and all of you should be prepared to work collectively, buy raw material in bulk, groceries in bulk. Let us know if you can agree to this precondition!!”

“Ok, we will try doing that.”

The Gadaliya are the ironsmiths, they make kitchen tools from iron, sell the stuff they have made daily and buy their food daily. The daily selling does not fetch good price for the products and buying raw material in small quantity proves to be expensive. This is not just the Gadaliya but all daily wage earners function in this manner.  VSSM Kanubhai has been mentoring the families in managing their finances, business and daily lives to help them stretch their rupee a bit further!! He is helping them increase their productivity. As instructed, the Gadaliyaa bought their raw material and groceries in bulk, and when they went to sell their products they did manage to fetch good prices.

VSSMમાંથી લોન લઈને સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરનાર પરિવારો સાથે...

On a recent visit to Rajkot, I happen to meet these families. The 5 families who were given loans of Rs. 10,000 each were earning good profits. Inspired from their experiences more loan of Rs. 20,000 was requested by 10 individuals. Together they managed loan of RS. 2 lakhs.

Life is gradually changing for better, the increased and well managed earnings means they can now save which is increasing at a regular pace. They can now dream of contributing this savings to build a home. Mausamben, Panetarben, Pujiram, Sevakram, Ehsanben have given up their addiction to alcohol, the rituals of feeding meat and alcohol to guests have stopped completely instead the community has made a rule to offer meal to their guests. The community itself is positive about coming times and feels tomorrow is going to be good for them!!

 ‘પાંચ રૃપિયાનું મરચુ, પાંચનું તેલ આ બધુ રોજ રોજ લાવીને ખાવાનું બંધ કરવું હોય અને અમે કહીએ એમ ચાલવું હોય તો લોન આપું.’

‘પણ સાહેબ અમારી પાહે પૈસા જ નથ હોતા કે શાહુકાર લોકની જેમ હામટુ કરિયાણું ભરાવી હકીએ. રોજ ધંધા કરીએ અને કમાઈએ એમાંથી જ જીંદગી ચાલે.’

‘અમે તમને 10,000ની લોન આપીએ એમાંથી તમારે 2000નું કરિયાણુ ભરાવવાનું અને 6000નો સામાન લોખંડમાંથી તવી,તાવેતા,જારા બનાવવા લાવવાનો અને 2000 ખર્ચી માટે હાથ પર રાખવાના. વળી દસે ગાડલિયાને લોન આપીએ એ દસે સામટા જ કરિયાણું અને ધંધો કરવાનો સામાન લાવશે. અમે સાથે રહીશું મંજુર હોય તો બોલો.’

‘હા સાહેબ એમ કરો.’

ગાડલિયા રોજ 200 કે 300નું લોખંડ લાવીને સામાન બનાવે અને રોજ વેપારીને વેચે. જે આવક થાય તેમાંથી નવું લોખંડ ખરીદે અને બે ટંક ચાલે એટલું કરિયાણું લાવે. આમ તો દરેક ગરીબ અને વંચિતોનું જીવન આવું જ હોય..

પણ vssmના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈએ હોલસેલમાં કરિયાણું ખરીદાવાનું અને લોખંડનો સામાન ખરીદવાનું કર્યું. સામટો સામાન દસ દિવસે બધા પરિવારોનો વેચવાનો એટલે ભાવ પણ સરસ મળે.

રાજકોટ જવાનું થયું ત્યારે ગાડલિયા મળવા આવ્યા શરૃ પાંચ વ્યક્તિને 10,000ની મળીને કુલ 50,000 આપેલા એમાંથી સરસ નફો થયો એટલે ફરી રૃા.૨૦,૦૦૦ની લોન દસ વ્યક્તિઓએ માંગી. બે લાખની લોનનો વ્યવહાર ઉપર જણાવ્યા પ્રમાણે કર્યો.

 જીવનમાં ઘણો ફરક પડ્યો. ઘર બનાવવા પૈસા  ભેગા કરી રહ્યા છે. કોઈએ પાંચ તો કોઈએ સાત  હજાર સુધીની બચત કરી છે. જે ઉત્તરોત્તર વધી  રહી છે. જીંદગી બદલાઈ રહી છે. મોસમબેન, પાનેતરબેન, એહસાનબેન, પુંજીરામ, સેવકરામ  વગેરે સૌએ દારૃના વ્યસનને ત્યજ્યું છે અને મહેમાન આવતા ત્યારે માંસાહાર અને દારૃ પાછળ થનાર ખોટા ખર્ચને તેમણે બંધ કર્યો છે. મહેમાનોને મીઠા ભોજન મળશે તેવું ગાડલિયા નાતમાં તેમણે જાહેર કરી દીધુ છે. બદલાવ આવી રહ્યો છે હવે અમારા દિ વળ્યા તેવું તેઓ હસતા મોંઢે કહે છે.

સ્વતંત્ર ધંધા માટે વગર વ્યાજની લોન આપનાર સૌ સ્વજનોનો આભાર...

“Ben, the business of main and selling brooms is doing well, the problem however our inability to reach out to the market elsewhere. You gave us loan for the business and the business has flourished but give us loan for purchasing a vehicle  so that we can manage to reach to distant markets!!” said Karshankaka who after all these years in Rapar, Kutchh has now settled in Ahmedabad’s Odhav suburb.  

Doing well in life, having a decent home, visualising children studying all the way and doing well in life aren’t the desires the nomads cling to, infant they hardly dream for anything. When asked, “If God was to grant you wishes, what is it that you would ask for?” 

The reply would be a very long pause, when we would insist on a reply, “ God can give us anything that he wishes is good for us, how would we know what do we want!!” such honest and unassuming folks. So when such individuals  begin to dream and desire for better opportunities and spreading their wings further we feel good, we feel  reassured that at least they will strive to achieve their dreams and it would make our task a bit more easy. In fact we ask them to dream and aspire  for better times.

Sometime ago Karshankaka and two other members form his settlement took a loan from VSSM to buy a  moped. The moped helped them increase their sales, but now they wanted to further expand their reach and wanted a bigger vehicle as the two-wheeler has its own limitations and the number of brooms that can be carried on a two wheeler is much less than a loading rickshaw!! Yes, now Karshankaka and his mates were proposing for a loan to buy a loading rickshaw. They expressed this wish of their’s when they visited our Ahmedabad office during Diwali. They definitely were dreaming bigger, on hearing his proposal I couldn’t curtail my laughter and happiness. 

“They are planning to buy two loading rickshaw between four of them, it means we need to extend  loans of Rs. 1 lakh each to these 4 gentlemen. The amount is huge and we not have any guarantors!!” was Amiben’s first reaction. of course her concerns were genuine. But trading such risks has been VSSM’s nature, it is individuals like Karshankaka that need VSSM’s support and we assured Amiben to relax and prepare the documents for extending the required amount to Karshankaka and this friends. 

The loan cheques were deposited in their bank accounts they had with Kalupur Cooperative Bank, but under the current circumstances of demonetisation the bank refused to give them cash. “You have to help us get the money soon, with the prevailing conditions it might take two months for us to get the rickshaw!!” they asked us to help speed up the process. Since all of them were illiterate the bank refused to give them cheque book so we got demand-drafts issued and gave it to the company from where the loading-rickshaws were to be purchased. The delivery is expected in two days. 

We are glad people like Karshankaka are dreaming big and striving towards fulfilling those dreams, we were so overjoyed with the purchase that it felt like we had bought the rickshaw. 

Many a times I get asked, What are VSSM’s vision and mission?? and I tell them that these communities lead a life of dignity and turn up to be  best humans and they take VSSM’s work forward, the way VSSM has helped them realise their dream they too should someday reach out to the individuals in need and support!!!

And I am pretty sure they will take the good work forward!!!

‘બેન હાવરણીનો ધંધો હવે હારો હાલે સે પણ માથે લઈને કેટલીક હાવરણી વેચવી. હાવરણીના ધંધા હારુ તમે લોન આપી ઈતો અમે ભરી હોત નાખી હવે કાંક વાહન માટે લોન આલો તો વધારે ધંધો થાય.’ વર્ષો સુધી કચ્છના રાપરમાં રહેલા અને હવે અમદાવાદના ઓઢવમાં રહેવા આવેલા કરશનકાકાએ સ્વપ્ન જોવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓ સાથે અમારા કામના અનુભવે અમે જ સતત અનુભવ્યું તે આ પરિવારોમાંના માટોભાગના સ્વપ્ન જ નથી જોતા. એમને પુછો કે તમને ભગવાન પ્રસન્ન થાય અને કહે કે, ‘માંગ માંગ માંગે તે આપું. તો તમે શું માંગો?’ આના જવાબમાં મોટાભાગના જેમની સાથે vssm કામ કરે છે તે લોકો ચૂપ જ થઈ જાય. બહુ કહીએ તો કહી કે, ‘ભગવાનને યોગ લાગે ઈ આપે અમન ઈમાં કાંઈ હમજ ના પડે.’ આવા સરળ અને બહુ બધી મહત્વકાંક્ષા ના રાખનારા આ પરિવારો થોડા સ્વપ્ન જોતા થાય તો અત્યારે જે તકલીફો એ વેઠે છે તેમાંથી સરળતાથી મુક્તિ મળી શકે અને એટલે અમે સૌ એમને સ્વપ્ન જોતા કરવાનું કરીએ છીએ.

કરશનકાકા અને તેમની વસાહતના બે લોકોએ vssm પાસેથી વગર વ્યાજની લોન લઈને મોપેડ ખરીદ્યું. ધંધો તો સારો ચાલ્યો. દિવાળીના રામ રામ કરવા ઓફીસ આવ્યા એટલે એમણે કહ્યું, ‘બેન મોપેડમાં માપની હાવેણી લઈને વેચવા જવાય. તમે ગાડી માટે લોન આપો ન.’ 

તેમના મોંઢેથી આ સાંભળીને હસવું આવ્યું પણ હરખ ઘણો થયો. અમારા અમીબેન કહે કે, ‘બે લોડિંગ રીક્ષા લેવાનું કહે છે અને એ માટે ચાર વ્યક્તિને એક એક લાખ એમ કુલ ચાર લાખની લોન આપવાનું થાય. લોનની રકમ બહુ મોટી છે પાછું ગેરન્ટી અને અન્ય કશું તો છે નહીં.’ અમીબેનની ચિંતા વ્યાજબી પણ vssmનું કામ જ આ છે. આવા જ પરિવારોને આપણી મદદની જરૃર છે. ચિંતા ના કરો લોન આપો કાંઈ નહીં થાય. લોનના ચેક અમે તેમનું કાલપુર બેંકમાં ખાતુ ખોલાવ્યું હતું ત્યાં ભર્યા. હાલની ચાલી રહેલી 500 અને 1000ની રામાયણમાં એક સામટા પૈસા આપવાની બેંકે ના પાડી. કરશનકાકા, ભલાભાઈ ચિંતામાં પડી ગ્યા શું કરીશું. ‘બેન ઝટ ગાડી આવે એમ કરો. આમ જ પૈસાની રામાયણ રહી તો આ તો બે મહિને ગાડીનો મળે નહીં પડે.’ આ ચારેય પાછા અભણ એટલે ચેક બુક બેંક આપે નહીં. બેંકમાં મેનેજમેન્ટ સાથે વાત કરી તત્કાલ ડીમાન્ડ ડ્રાફ્ટ કઢાવ્યા અને જ્યાંથી લોડિંગ રીક્ષા ખરીદવાની હતી તેમને ગઈ કાલે આપ્યા. બે દીવસમાં તેમની ગાડી આવી જશે.

સ્વપ્ન જુઓ અને તેને પુરા કરવા મથો એવું હંમેશાં કહું ત્યારે કરશનકાકાની વસાહતના લોકો એ દિશામાં બે ડગલા ચાલ્યા એનો અનહદ આનંદ, અમારા કાર્યકર અને અમારા ઘરે રીક્ષા ખરીદાઈ હોય એવો અદભૂત આનંદ અમને સૌને થયો.

વિચરતી જાતિના તમામ પરિવારો કરશનકાકાની જેમ સ્વપ્ન જોતા થશે તો કોઈનીયે મદદની તેમને જરૃર નહીં પડે.. અમારા આ પરિવારો સ્પપ્ન જોતા થાય એની સાથે એ ખુબ સારા માણસો બને તેવો પ્રયત્ન અમે કરીએ છીએ.. ઘણા મને પુછે કે vssmનું વિઝન, મીશન શું? હું કહું છુ વિચરતી જાતિના જે પરિવારો અમારા સંપર્કમાં છે તે સ્વમાનપુર્ણ જીંદગી જીવે, ખુબ ઉમદા માણસો બને અને vssm ના માધ્યમથી જેમ હજારો લોકો તેમને મદદ કરે છે તેમ તેઓ પણ ભવિષ્યમાં તેમનાથી વંચિત દુખી પરિવારોને મદદ કરે તેવા વિચારવાળા બને...

The collapse of rural economies have triggered the most profound and yet largely unrecognised rural-urban migration in our country. Amongst many other poor and marginalised  communities also present are the nomadic communities, whose traditional occupations gradually became obsolete and they have no other means but to work as labourers or resort to begging. The nomadic communities as such do not belong to any village but their occupation largely depended on rural communities  so with the rural population moving towards the cities the nomadic communities also turned towards the urban regions and  settled in the various slums and ghettoes or makeshift shanties on the roadsides. In cities also these communities struggle to find work on daily basis and sustaining a family is a challenge.

Recently we happened to visit such families living in Rajkot and Morbi.  These families are struggling with their lives, making numerous rounds to the government offices for getting power, water, ration cards and various other entitlements. But as it happens no one listens to the pleas of the poor and powerless. When there are no guarantees of their where about who is going to hold their hands and help them earn a decent living, who loans money to such individuals and communities?

VSSM has supported such families in Rajkot and Morbi and we recently has a meeting with them. During the meeting they talked about the change they are experiencing in their lives because of their new business initiatives and what are their plans for future. The community here have a special liking for VSSM’s Kanubhai. They say " no one cares for them more than him, he is the one who stands by them in times of need. After he came to our settlements there has been 70% change in our standard of living, our addictions have also reduced, we are experiences new possibilities in life.”   Such honest feedbacks delights us. We feel, as an organisation we are inching closer to our goals.

ગામડાં ભાંગતા જાય છે. લોકોએ રોજગારીની શોધમાં શહેરોની વાટ પકડી છે. આવામાં વિચરતી જાતિના પરિવારો કે જેઓ પોતાનાં પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય અર્થે સદીઓથી ફરતા રહ્યા છે. જેમના વ્યવસાયો પણ સમાજ આધારિત હતા જે હવે પડી ભાંગ્યા છે, એમણે પણ શહેરોમાં આવીને વસવાટ કર્યો છે. આમ તો એમના કોઈ ગામ જ નથી અને વિચરણ એજ એમનું જીવન હતું એમાં શહેરોમાં હવે થોડા ઘણા અંશે એ સ્થાઈ થવાની કોશિશ કરે છે. આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નાજુક છે. માંડ માંડ ગુજારો કરતાં આ પરિવારો પાસે બે ટંકનું ભેગું કરવું પણ મુશ્કેલ હોય છે આવામાં પોતાનું આવાસ તો કાયથી હોવાનું.. સડકો ઉપર, ગટરની બાજુમાં કે જ્યાં સામાન્ય રીતે કોઈને નડે નહી એવી જગ્યા પર આ પરિવારોએ પોતાના ડેરા-તંબુ નાખ્યાં છે.

આ દેશમાં આવા લાખો પરિવારો વસે છે. તાજેતરમાં રાજકોટ અને મોરબી શહેર અને તેના તાલુકા મથકોમાં રહેતાં આવા પરિવારો વચ્ચે જવાનું થયું. આ પરિવારો જીવવા માટે મહેનત કરે છે. વિવિધ સરકારી કચેરીમાં વીજળી, પાણી, રેશનકાર્ડ વગેરે જેવા પ્રશ્નો સાથે કેટલીયેવાર રજૂઆત કરી પણ કોઈ સાંભળવા તૈયાર નથી. આવામાં સ્વબળે ઉભા થવા આ પરિવારોએ બેંક પાસે જઈને ધિરાણ માંગ્યું કે, જેમાંથી નાનું – મોટુ પોતાને ગમતું કામ કરી આજીવિકા મેળવી શકાય પણ જેની પાસે પોતાની ઓળખના આધારો જ નથી અથવા આધારો છે પણ સરનામુ નથી - આજે અહિયાં તો કાલે બીજે ક્યાંય ડંગા સાથે ફર્યા કરવાનું એમને લોન કોણ આપે?

vssmએ આવા પરિવારોને વગર વ્યાજની લોન આપીને સ્વમાનભેર જીવન જીવી શકે એ માટે મદદરૂપ થવાનું કર્યું છે. હમણાં રાજકોટ જવાનું થયું એ વખતે લોન લીધેલા પરિવારો સાથે એક બેઠક થઇ(ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે) જેમાં એમણે લોન લીધા પછી જીવનમાં આવેલા હકારાત્મક ફેરફારની સાથે સાથે ભવિષ્યના આયોજનો સંદર્ભે વાત કરી...

vssmના એ વિસ્તારના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ માટે આ પરિવારોને અનહદ પ્રેમ છે. એ લોકો કહે છે એમ, કનુભાઈ અમારી વસ્તીમાં જે રીતે ફરે છે અમારા સુખ દુઃખમાં સાથે ઉભા રહે છે એ રીતે કોઈ ઉભું રહ્યું નથી. ના કોઈએ મદદ કરી છે. એમના આવવાથી અમારામાં ૭૦ ટકા ફેર પડી ગયો છે. વ્યસનપણ અમે બંધ કર્યા છે.. આ સાંભળ્યું ત્યારે ખુબ આનંદ થયો. vssmની સ્થાપનાના મૂળમાં આ વિગતો હતી જે સાકાર થઇ રહી છે.
