Teenaben Ravan was able to get a house in Deesa under Rajiv Gandhi Away Yojna. With the help of Pravinbhai Maadi and Nagarpalika, Teenaben had to pay the Rs 10, 000/- , which she borrowed through the interest free loans that VSSM gives to NT/DNT communities.

Mahesh (VSSM worker) clicked the picture and Teenaben told Mahesh to make a copy of it and give it to her the earliest. Today, Mahesh calls me with a request to send the picture clicked with Teenaben. He informed me that Teenaben has been calling him several times a day and  now, he is hesitant to even go to the locality that Teenaben lives , with the fear that she will catch him and ask for the copy of the picture.

Unlike Mahesh, I only had laughter in my part. Everyone has pictures of their family members in their house and to get a place in that is truly humbling.

VSSM helps Amthabhai Bharthari to get a Buffalo

On the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan lies the Bhandotra village, with a population of approximately 5 thousand. Amthabhai Hirabhai Bharthari lives in this village and works as a one fourth partner of an agricultural land. Whatever the harvest of the season, he gets to keep the one fourth part of it. But farming is full of uncertainty these days, from untimely rains to the droughts in the region and change in climate. Due to any of these climatic factors, if the harvest fails or is not good, then Amthabhai has to bear the loss. If they harvest twice in the year and the harvest is good, the total income is 40 thousand to 50 thousand. Without any concern of day of day or night, of the harsh sun or the freezing cold, they keep working in the farm.

Amthabhai has 3 sons and 2 daughters. From whatever he could save, he got his one daughter married. But it is not enough for running his household. So he thought that if he bought a Buffalo, then he can feed his family with milk and the remaining milk, he can sell it in the dairy of the village. And the dairy is not far from his house, so there won’t be any issue of travelling. 

So he contacted Maheshbhai (VSSM worker) and requested him for an interest free loan of 30 Thousand. His loan got approved and he could buy a Buffalo. After he got the Buffalo, his income increased and he was able to save for repaying the monthly amount of the loan.His wife also helps him take care of the buffalo. He is now thinking that once he repays this loan, he wishes to get another interest free loan of 30 - 40 Thousand and buy another buffalo that he has seen nearby. The buffalo is worth 55 Thousand and Amthabhai given a token amount for it from his savings and has got the buffalo home. He now has to pay the remaining amount for which he is expecting VSSM to give him an interest free loan.

We, at VSSM, wish that Amthabhai and his wife keep working together and sustain themselves. We heartily thank the donors who make is possible for us to help people like Amthabhai.

VSSM helps Dariyaben Raval find elusive happiness!!!

“My husband died very early, at that time our son was very young and hadn’t yet acquired the skills to our traditional profession as ironsmith. It was after my husband’s death that my son learnt the skills, he now works at an iron workshop, I have single-handedly raised him, got him married and helped him settle in life. My husband was an alcoholic and never contributed to running the household. I began working in the kitchens of professional caterers but it was not very rewarding.  I took this loan from Mittalben to begin this business of selling utensils.  The business has done well, helping us improve our standard of living. This initial capital has increased my capacity to procure more items to trade, I make a profit of Rs.20 per piece, by the end of the day I take home Rs. 400-500. I am here for the entire day only than I earn Rs. 10 to 12,000 a month!!”

VSSM supported Dariyaben with a loan of Rs. 10,000, which she has almost repaid. The business has done well and Dariyaben is in a happy state right now….

"પેલા લુહારી કોમ કરતા તાં. પણ આના પપ્પા મરી ગ્યા પસી સોકરાને લુહારી કામ શીખડાયુ. સોકરો હાલ લોખંડનાં કારખાનામાં જાય સે. મે સોકરાને પૈણાયો ને એને એકલા હાથે મોટો કર્યો. આના પપ્પા દારુ ખૂબ પીતા પીને ધમાલ કરતા એક રુપિયો ય કમાતા નઈ... એમના મરી ગ્યા પસી મે રસોડાના કામ કરવાના ચાલું કર્યાં પણ એમો કોઈ ખાસ મજૂરી મલતી નઈ પણ મિત્તલબેન પાસેથી લોન લઈને આ વાસણનો ધંધો ચાલુ કર્યો સે તો હાલ પરિસ્થિતિ સુધરી સે... હાલ થોડો માલ લાઉ સુ ને વેચુ સુ એક નંગ ચેડે 20 રુપિયા મલે સે ને દિવસે 400-500 રુપિયાનો નફો થઈ જાય સે... આખો દિવસ ઓય ઉભી રઉ ત્યારે મહિને દસ બાર હજાર રુપિયા રળી લઉ સુ..."

- દરિયાબેન રાવળને વાસણની લારી કરવા માટે 10,000ની લોન આપી. દરિયાબેને લીધેલી આ લોન પૂરી પણ થવા આવી છે. એકલે હાથે છોકરાને મોટો કરીને તેના લગ્ન કરાવ્યાને હાલ VSSM પાસેથી લોન લઈને વાસણની લારી કરીને દરિયાબેન દિવસે સારો નફો કરી લે છે.

VSSM supports Ramilaben Devipujak to build a shop to supplement her income...

Ramilaben Devipujak was just 30 years old when all of a sudden she lost her husband. The couple has a son named Arun.  Saddened by the daughter’s fate Ramilaben’s father brought her back from her in-law’s home. The support she received from her father and brother helped Ramilaben rebuild her life once again. She decided not to remarry and single handily raise her son. Just like her father and brother she also bought a hand-cart and began selling fresh vegetables. The income has been good allowing Ramilaben to lead a dignified life. Ramilaben’s concerned father gifted her a small piece of land so that she has something to lean on, in case things in her life went south!! It’s a very small piece of land just enough to build a small kiosk or a shop and that exactly what she planned to do. After the construction of the kiosk she plans to rent it to supplement her income. However, the construction cost is something that is worrying her as she does not have enough reserves nor does she intend to ask for anymore help from her father.

Ramilaben was aware of VSSM’s activities in the region and its interest free loan program.  She approached VSSM’s team member Mahesh and requested for a loan of Rs. 40,000. Mahesh understood her situation and her plan to rent the premises. On being asked why she would want to rent it and not use it for herself, Ramilaben had an answer that quick and well thought of, “My business is very well settled, I would stand to lose around 2000 to 4000 if I give up my vegetable vending business. The income from the rent will supplement my income and I’ll have a small property for my son, we also have an option, just in case in future if he might want to use it to start his own business!!”

The Devipujak community is believed to be extremely enterprising and blessed with a very sharp business acumen, Ramilaben’s vision and plans for a secured future proved the popular belief for this community. The construction work has completed and Ramilaben is regular in paying the monthly instalment of Rs. 4000 as she intends to be debt free as soon as possible...

   

રમીલાબેન પોપટભાઈ દેવીપુજક ડીસા પાટણ હાઈવે પર સંતઅન્ના સ્કુલની પાસેના વિસ્તારમાં રહે છે. તેઓ વિધવા છે અને તેમનો એક દીકરો છે જેનું નામ અરુણ છે. તે બન્ને છેલ્લા ૧૨ વર્ષથી પિતા સાથે જ રહે છે.તેમના પિતા અને તેમનો ભાઈ તે બન્ને ને બધી જ રીતે સહાય પૂરી પાડે છે. તેમના પિતા પાસે રોડ ની જગ્યા પર જમીન છે અને તે ઈચ્છે છે કે એ જમીન તે રમીલાબેન ના નામ ઉપર કરીલે અને ત્યાં રમીલાબેન અને તેમનો પુત્ર દુકાન બનાવે. રમીલાબેને દુકાન બનાવવા vssm માંથી ૪૦,૦૦૦ રૂપિયાની લોન લીધી. દુકાન બનાવ્યા પછી જ્યાં સુધી લોન ભરપાઈ ન થાય ત્યાં સુધી તે તેમની દુકાન ૨૦૦૦ રૂપિયા માં ભાડે આપશે અને બીજા ૨૦૦૦ રૂપિયા રમીલાબેન, તેમનો ભાઈ અને તેમનો પુત્ર એમ ત્રણ જણા થઈને મજુરી કરીને ૪૦૦૦ નો હપ્તો ચૂકવી રહ્યા છે. લોન ચૂકત થયા બાદ અરુણ ત્યાં પાર્લર કરવાનું વિચારે છે. તે એક બાજુ ધંધો કરીને રૂપિયા પણ મેળવશે અને ત્યાં રહીને ભણશે પણ ખરા. હું અહિયાં રહીને ભણીસ અને ધંધો કરી શકીશ અને મારી માતાનું ધ્યાન પણ રાખી શકીશ.

“Ben, the business of main and selling brooms is doing well, the problem however our inability to reach out to the market elsewhere. You gave us loan for the business and the business has flourished but give us loan for purchasing a vehicle  so that we can manage to reach to distant markets!!” said Karshankaka who after all these years in Rapar, Kutchh has now settled in Ahmedabad’s Odhav suburb.  

Doing well in life, having a decent home, visualising children studying all the way and doing well in life aren’t the desires the nomads cling to, infant they hardly dream for anything. When asked, “If God was to grant you wishes, what is it that you would ask for?” 

The reply would be a very long pause, when we would insist on a reply, “ God can give us anything that he wishes is good for us, how would we know what do we want!!” such honest and unassuming folks. So when such individuals  begin to dream and desire for better opportunities and spreading their wings further we feel good, we feel  reassured that at least they will strive to achieve their dreams and it would make our task a bit more easy. In fact we ask them to dream and aspire  for better times.

Sometime ago Karshankaka and two other members form his settlement took a loan from VSSM to buy a  moped. The moped helped them increase their sales, but now they wanted to further expand their reach and wanted a bigger vehicle as the two-wheeler has its own limitations and the number of brooms that can be carried on a two wheeler is much less than a loading rickshaw!! Yes, now Karshankaka and his mates were proposing for a loan to buy a loading rickshaw. They expressed this wish of their’s when they visited our Ahmedabad office during Diwali. They definitely were dreaming bigger, on hearing his proposal I couldn’t curtail my laughter and happiness. 

“They are planning to buy two loading rickshaw between four of them, it means we need to extend  loans of Rs. 1 lakh each to these 4 gentlemen. The amount is huge and we not have any guarantors!!” was Amiben’s first reaction. of course her concerns were genuine. But trading such risks has been VSSM’s nature, it is individuals like Karshankaka that need VSSM’s support and we assured Amiben to relax and prepare the documents for extending the required amount to Karshankaka and this friends. 

The loan cheques were deposited in their bank accounts they had with Kalupur Cooperative Bank, but under the current circumstances of demonetisation the bank refused to give them cash. “You have to help us get the money soon, with the prevailing conditions it might take two months for us to get the rickshaw!!” they asked us to help speed up the process. Since all of them were illiterate the bank refused to give them cheque book so we got demand-drafts issued and gave it to the company from where the loading-rickshaws were to be purchased. The delivery is expected in two days. 

We are glad people like Karshankaka are dreaming big and striving towards fulfilling those dreams, we were so overjoyed with the purchase that it felt like we had bought the rickshaw. 

Many a times I get asked, What are VSSM’s vision and mission?? and I tell them that these communities lead a life of dignity and turn up to be  best humans and they take VSSM’s work forward, the way VSSM has helped them realise their dream they too should someday reach out to the individuals in need and support!!!

And I am pretty sure they will take the good work forward!!!

‘બેન હાવરણીનો ધંધો હવે હારો હાલે સે પણ માથે લઈને કેટલીક હાવરણી વેચવી. હાવરણીના ધંધા હારુ તમે લોન આપી ઈતો અમે ભરી હોત નાખી હવે કાંક વાહન માટે લોન આલો તો વધારે ધંધો થાય.’ વર્ષો સુધી કચ્છના રાપરમાં રહેલા અને હવે અમદાવાદના ઓઢવમાં રહેવા આવેલા કરશનકાકાએ સ્વપ્ન જોવાનું શરૃ કર્યું. 

વિચરતી વિમુક્ત જાતિઓ સાથે અમારા કામના અનુભવે અમે જ સતત અનુભવ્યું તે આ પરિવારોમાંના માટોભાગના સ્વપ્ન જ નથી જોતા. એમને પુછો કે તમને ભગવાન પ્રસન્ન થાય અને કહે કે, ‘માંગ માંગ માંગે તે આપું. તો તમે શું માંગો?’ આના જવાબમાં મોટાભાગના જેમની સાથે vssm કામ કરે છે તે લોકો ચૂપ જ થઈ જાય. બહુ કહીએ તો કહી કે, ‘ભગવાનને યોગ લાગે ઈ આપે અમન ઈમાં કાંઈ હમજ ના પડે.’ આવા સરળ અને બહુ બધી મહત્વકાંક્ષા ના રાખનારા આ પરિવારો થોડા સ્વપ્ન જોતા થાય તો અત્યારે જે તકલીફો એ વેઠે છે તેમાંથી સરળતાથી મુક્તિ મળી શકે અને એટલે અમે સૌ એમને સ્વપ્ન જોતા કરવાનું કરીએ છીએ.

કરશનકાકા અને તેમની વસાહતના બે લોકોએ vssm પાસેથી વગર વ્યાજની લોન લઈને મોપેડ ખરીદ્યું. ધંધો તો સારો ચાલ્યો. દિવાળીના રામ રામ કરવા ઓફીસ આવ્યા એટલે એમણે કહ્યું, ‘બેન મોપેડમાં માપની હાવેણી લઈને વેચવા જવાય. તમે ગાડી માટે લોન આપો ન.’ 

તેમના મોંઢેથી આ સાંભળીને હસવું આવ્યું પણ હરખ ઘણો થયો. અમારા અમીબેન કહે કે, ‘બે લોડિંગ રીક્ષા લેવાનું કહે છે અને એ માટે ચાર વ્યક્તિને એક એક લાખ એમ કુલ ચાર લાખની લોન આપવાનું થાય. લોનની રકમ બહુ મોટી છે પાછું ગેરન્ટી અને અન્ય કશું તો છે નહીં.’ અમીબેનની ચિંતા વ્યાજબી પણ vssmનું કામ જ આ છે. આવા જ પરિવારોને આપણી મદદની જરૃર છે. ચિંતા ના કરો લોન આપો કાંઈ નહીં થાય. લોનના ચેક અમે તેમનું કાલપુર બેંકમાં ખાતુ ખોલાવ્યું હતું ત્યાં ભર્યા. હાલની ચાલી રહેલી 500 અને 1000ની રામાયણમાં એક સામટા પૈસા આપવાની બેંકે ના પાડી. કરશનકાકા, ભલાભાઈ ચિંતામાં પડી ગ્યા શું કરીશું. ‘બેન ઝટ ગાડી આવે એમ કરો. આમ જ પૈસાની રામાયણ રહી તો આ તો બે મહિને ગાડીનો મળે નહીં પડે.’ આ ચારેય પાછા અભણ એટલે ચેક બુક બેંક આપે નહીં. બેંકમાં મેનેજમેન્ટ સાથે વાત કરી તત્કાલ ડીમાન્ડ ડ્રાફ્ટ કઢાવ્યા અને જ્યાંથી લોડિંગ રીક્ષા ખરીદવાની હતી તેમને ગઈ કાલે આપ્યા. બે દીવસમાં તેમની ગાડી આવી જશે.

સ્વપ્ન જુઓ અને તેને પુરા કરવા મથો એવું હંમેશાં કહું ત્યારે કરશનકાકાની વસાહતના લોકો એ દિશામાં બે ડગલા ચાલ્યા એનો અનહદ આનંદ, અમારા કાર્યકર અને અમારા ઘરે રીક્ષા ખરીદાઈ હોય એવો અદભૂત આનંદ અમને સૌને થયો.

વિચરતી જાતિના તમામ પરિવારો કરશનકાકાની જેમ સ્વપ્ન જોતા થશે તો કોઈનીયે મદદની તેમને જરૃર નહીં પડે.. અમારા આ પરિવારો સ્પપ્ન જોતા થાય એની સાથે એ ખુબ સારા માણસો બને તેવો પ્રયત્ન અમે કરીએ છીએ.. ઘણા મને પુછે કે vssmનું વિઝન, મીશન શું? હું કહું છુ વિચરતી જાતિના જે પરિવારો અમારા સંપર્કમાં છે તે સ્વમાનપુર્ણ જીંદગી જીવે, ખુબ ઉમદા માણસો બને અને vssm ના માધ્યમથી જેમ હજારો લોકો તેમને મદદ કરે છે તેમ તેઓ પણ ભવિષ્યમાં તેમનાથી વંચિત દુખી પરિવારોને મદદ કરે તેવા વિચારવાળા બને...
