“For the first time in my life I got an opportunity to donate Rs. 5000, and I am very much thankful to the organization for this.”

Alpeshbhai Prabhubhai Parmar and his wife live in Gajivada of Rajkot and do cutlery business. They have four children including two daughters and two sons. Alpeshbhai belongs to Kangasiya community. Their traditional business was to prepare combs from wood and horns of animals. But with the passage of time this occupation stopped and died out. Alpeshbhai works as a labor whereas his wife does cutlery business. As the market was large, they had to bring products in bulk. To bring this goods into market they had to pay Rs 300-350/- as rickshaw fare. Alpeshbhai knew how to drive rickshaw and hence he took rickshaw at a rent of Rs. 150/- daily, he also had to pay Rs. 50/- to fill gas in the rickshaw. In this way, he started saving Rs. 100-150/- daily. Now he thinks that if he would buy a new rickshaw he would be able to save the rent of Rs. 150/-.

Alpeshbhai says, “Once my wife and I went to a financial institution to get a loan but the interest rate was too high for us to pay. We got disappointed and went back home. On our way we met a reputed leader of our Kangasiya village, Ravjibhai. He explained us about VSSM. We talked to the field workers of VSSM Kanubhai and Chhayaben about loan. We got a loan of Rs. 50,000/- from the organization. I bought a second-hand rickshaw from that loan. If we would not have got this loan we would be paying high interests of financial institutions and even we would have not got our own rickshaw. Because of the loan monthly amount of Rs. 6000/- which I had to pay as rent was now saved and now I had to pay only Rs. 1500/-. Whatever was saved after deducting all the expenses I would pay instalments? My loan is also over now. With the help of the organisation, our dream of our own rickshaw was accomplished and now I am the owner of a rickshaw.”

With the help of the organization Alpeshbhai bought a rickshaw and after completing the loan. He also wished to donate Rs. 5000/- for children hostel and he also donated the amount. He also wishes to expand his cutlery business. We wish that Alpeshbhai progresses on his path.

રાજકોટના ગંજીવાડામાં રહેતા અલ્પેશભાઈ પ્રભુભાઈ પરમાર અને તેમના પત્ની હાલ કટલરીનો ધંધો કરે. તેમને બે દિકરી અને બે દીકરા એમ ચાર બાળકો. અલ્પેશભાઈ કાંગસિયા સમાજમાંથી છે. જેમનો પરંપરાગત વ્યવસાય લાકડા અને શિંગડામાંથી કાંસકીઓ બનાવવાનો પરંતુ સમય જતા આ કામ બંધ થઇ ગયું. હવે અલ્પેશભાઈ મજૂરી કરવા લાગ્યા અને તેમના પત્નીએ કટલરીના સામાનનું વેચાણ શરૂ કર્યું. બજાર મોટું એટલે સામાન પણ ઝાઝો લાવવો પડે. સામાન બજારમાં લઇ જવા માટે રીક્ષાનો ૩૦૦ થી ૩૫૦ રૂપિયા ખર્ચ થતો. અલ્પેશભાઈને રિક્ષા ચલાવતા આવડતું તેથી તેઓ રોજના ૧૫૦ રૂપિયા ભાડેથી રિક્ષા લાવ્યા અને તેમાં ગેસ પુરાવવાના રૂપિયા ૫૦ થતા. આમ, હવે રોજના ૧૦૦ થી ૧૫૦ રૂપિયા બચવા લાગ્યા. તેમને એવો વિચાર આવ્યો કે જો પોતાની રિક્ષા થઇ જાય તો રીક્ષાના ૧૫૦ રૂપિયા ના આપવા પડે.

 “અલ્પેશભાઈ કહે, એકવાર હું અને મારી પત્ની બંને રીક્ષા માટે ફાઈનાન્સ કંપનીમાં લોન માટે ગયા. અમને પોસાય નહીં તેવું વ્યાજ તેમણે કીધું. અમે નિરાશ થઇ ઘરે પાછા ફરતા હતા એ વખતે અમારા કાંગસિયા સમાજના આગેવાન રવજીભાઈ એ અમને VSSM વિષે માહિતી આપી. VSSMના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ અને છાયાબેનને અમે વાત કરી. સંસ્થામાંથી રીક્ષા લેવા માટે મને રૂપિયા ૫૦,૦૦૦ની લોન મળતા મે જૂનામાં રીક્ષા ખરીદી લીધી. જો લોન ના મળી હોત તો ફાઈનાન્સ કંપનીવાળાને વધારાના પૈસા ચૂકવવા પડત અને ઘરની રીક્ષા થાત જ નહીં. લોન મળતા મહિનાના ૬૦૦૦ રૂપિયા જે ભાડાની રીક્ષાના વધારાના જતા હતા તે બચી ગયા. હવે ફક્ત ૧૫૦૦ રૂપિયાનો જ ખર્ચ થાય છે. બધું કાઢતા જે પૈસા વધતા તેમાંથી જ લોનનો હપ્તો ભરતા. હવે તો લોન પણ પૂરી થઇ ગઈ. સંસ્થાની મદદને કારણે અમારૂ રીક્ષાનું સ્વપ્ન પુરૂ થયું. આજે હું રીક્ષાનો માલિક બની ગયો. “

સંસ્થાની મદદથી અલ્પેશભાઈ એ રીક્ષા લીધી તેમજ લોન પૂરી થતા સંસ્થા દ્વારા ચાલતી બાળકોની હોસ્ટેલ માટે રૂપિયા ૫૦૦૦નું દાન આપવાની તેમણે વાત કરી અને તેમણે દાન આપ્યું પણ ખરું. તેઓ પોતાના કટલરીના ધંધાને હજૂ ખૂબ આગળ વધારવા માંગે છે. અલ્પેશભાઈ પ્રગતિના પંથે આગળ વધતા રહે તેવી શુભેચ્છા...

“To teach them a lesson, we are prepared to outcaste them!”

The nomads we work for are generally very righteous communities. They abide by the human values we all have grown up with, but somehow choose to unfollow at times!! Sometime back VSSM sanctioned interest free loans to two Devipujak families, for a while they remained regular in paying back the monthly instalments. But as time passed they decided to stop paying their installments. This was quite disturbing for VSSM’s Kanubhai who had recommended these individuals to VSSM management and to us too. Since we always vouch for the integrity of these families, we felt let down by the behavior we had encountered.  There was a sense of betrayal we were experiencing.

The issue of non-repayment of loan was taken up to the Marwadi Devipujak community leaders from Rajkot. The leadership was astonished by the offence. They failed to understand how can someone ditch their own people; this organization (VSSM) was their own.

“No one should point finger on our organization!! This act will give a bad name to our community too, we can never tolerate this. The community cannot allow to break the trust the organization has put in us!!” The leaders of the Marwari Devipujak community decided to collectively pay the remaining installments. Every month they raise contribution to be sent as installment.

“We will be teaching these two individuals a lesson, let there be a right occasion, a proper opportunity. If required, we will outcaste them!” said the leaders.

Hope these otherwise simple and humble communities can hold their values intact from the bitter external influences!

લોનનો હપ્તો ના ભર એ નાત બારો

મારવાડી દેવીપૂજકના બે પરિવારોને વગર વ્યાજની લોન ધંધા માટે આપી. થોડા હપ્તા સમયસર આવ્યા અને પછી હપ્તા આપવાનું બંધ કર્યું. 

પરિવારનું કોઈ ખરાબ રવાડે ચડી ગ્યાનું સાંભળીએ ને જે દુ:ખ થાય તેવું થ્યું. નૈતિકતા કાયમ જળવાવી જોઈએ એવું અમે સૌ માનીએ ત્યારે પરિવારનું કોઈ અવળે રસ્તે જાય તે કેમ કરી સાંખી શકાય? VSSM ના કાર્યકર કનુભાઈ પણ દુઃખી.

રાજકોટના મારવાડી દેવીપૂજક સમાજના લોકોએ આ જાણ્યું. લોન લેનારને સમજાવ્યો. આપણી સંસ્થા સાથે દગો કરીએ તો કુદરત ના છોડે વગેરે... પણ.. પેલા ભાઈની નિયતમાં ખોટ આવી ગઈ હતી.

આખરે મારવાડી દેવીપૂજક સમાજે બાકી રહેલી લોન સમાજ તરીકે ભરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. દર મહિને ઉધરાણું થાય અને લોન ભરાય. 

‘અમારી સંસ્થાને કોઈ કહી જાય એ નો પાલવે, બાવરીઓનું હોત નામ ખરાબ થાય... તમે ભરોષો મુક્યો અમારાથી એને ના તોડાય. પેલો ભલે હાલ લોન ના ભરે પણ નાતમાં તો બેહવાનું થાશેને? પ્રસંગ આવવા દો.. એવું ઉદાહરણ બેહાડીશું કે દગો કરવાનો બીજોય કોઈ વિચાર નઈ કરે. જરૃર પડે નાત બારો કાઢશું’  

મૂલ્યો સાથે જીવનારા આ સમાજને કહેવાતા ભદ્ર સમાજની ગંદકી અડકી ના જાય તે જોવું રહ્યું..
