 “In 2002, I was utterly broke financially; I lost everything I owned. Clueless about how to move forward, I left my village, arrived in Nadiad, and took up a night-shift security guard job. However, it did not ensure my daily job; hence I bought a pre-owned hand cart and began selling stuff around Nadiad. But such ventures only give minuscule income. I needed capital to procure more products to have more varieties to market. But who lends money to poor people like us?

One day while I was passing through the bazaar with my hand cart, I heard someone call me, “Why do you have less stock in your cart?” he inquired. I shared the challenges to which he offered to give me an interest-free loan to procure enough stock.

Isn’t it astonishing to be offered a loan while minding business in a busy bazaar? Initially, I felt he was joking. But later, he introduced himself, explained about VSSM and Vimukt Foundation, and assured me of financial support. 

I did not have the required documents, but Rajnibhai helped to procure them. I was given a loan of Rs. 30,000. The funds helped repair the hand cart and purchase enough goods to fill up the cart. If I can find work, I do night shifts as a security guard; on other days, I earn through my business. My business income has grown, and so has my income. I now stay in a rented house, wear decent clothes, and have proper food on my plate. I now wish to expand my business.”

Sanjaybhai from Nadiad shared his experience with VSSM’s Swavlamban initiative of providing interest-free loans to individuals willing to grow or revamp their businesses. The program has helped 6500 individuals increase their incomes and quality of life.

"2002માં હું સાવ રોડ પર આવી ગયેલો. જે હતું એ બધુ ખતમ થઈ ગયું. શું કરુ એ સમજાતુ નહોતું. ગામ છોડી નડિયાદ આવ્યો અને હોમગાર્ડમાં રાત્રે નોકરીએ જવા માંડ્યો. પણ ત્યાં કાંઈ કાયમી કામ ન મળે મહિનાના પંદર સત્તર દિવસ કામ કરુ ને બાકીનો સમય એક જૂનામાં લારી ખરીદી તેમાં પાંચસો હજારનો સામાન ભરાવીને નડિયાદમાં ફરી ફરીને વેચું. પણ એમાં ઝાઝુ મળે નહીં. વધારે સામાન હોય તો ધંધો સારો થાય. પણ મને પૈસા કોણ ધીરે.

એક દિવસ બજારમાંથી લારી લઈને હું નકળી રહ્યો હતો ત્યાં એક ભાઈએ મને બૂમ પાડી ઊભો રાખ્યો ને લારીમાં આટલો સામાન કેમ એમ પુછ્યું.. મે સઘળી હકીકત કહી. એ પછી એ ભાઈએ કહ્યું, અમે તમને વધારે સામાન લાવવા લોન આપીયે તો?

આમ રસ્તે ચાલ્યા જતાને કોઈ લોન આપવાની વાત કરે તો નવાઈ જ લાગે ને? મને લાગ્યું આ ભાઈ મજાક કરે છે. પણ પછી એમણે VSSM સંસ્થા અને વિમુક્ત ફાઉન્ડેશનનો અને પોતાનો પરિચય આપ્યો અને ખરેખર લોન આપશેનું કહ્યું.મારી પાસે પુરતા ડોક્યુમેન્ટ પણ નહીં. પણ કાર્યકર રજનીભાઈએ ડોક્યુમેન્ટ કઢાવવા મને બધી મદદ કરી. અને પછી 30,000 લોન પેટે આપ્યા. મે મારી લારી સરખી કરાવી. જેમાં વધારે સામાન દેખાઈ શકે એ રીતે મે વધુ સામાન ભરાવ્યો. આજે હું મહિનામાં રાતના જ્યારે હોમગાર્ડ તરીકે કામ મળે ત્યારે કરુ બાકી દિવસે મારી લારી લઈને ફરુ. મારી આવક વધી ગઈ. હવે હું ભાડાના મકાનમાં રહુ છુ. કપડાં પણ સરખા પહેરુ ને ખાવાપીવાનુ હખ થઈ ગયું. હવે સ્વપ્ન થોડો મોટો ધંધો કરવાનું છે."

નડિયાદના સંજયભાઈની આ વાત. અમે સ્વાવલંબન કાર્યક્રમ અંતર્ગત સંજયભાઈને લોન આપી. સમગ્ર ગુજરાતામાં તેમના જેવા 6500 થી વધુ પરિવારોને અમે લોન આપી છે જેઓ પોતાનો ધંધો કરીને બે પાંદડે થયા છે.

બસ સૌ સુખી થાય એવી અભ્યર્થના...

“What do you plan to do with the loan you take?”

“The place where I stay not only has houses of people like me but some factories as well. If I start selling vegetables, snacks, groceries the income will be enough to sustain us.”

“ No one arrives in this world learning anything in his mother’s womb, we all learn as we grow, I too shall learn!!”

“Rest assured, Ben! But do sanction my application at the earliest.”

We sanctioned a loan of Rs. 30,000/- to Lakhabhai. Although he has never gone to school and does not even know how to read or write, he successfully manages his kiosk. The daily income of Rs. 600-700 helped him save enough to build a decent house. Recently, when I met him I was given a tour of his neatly decorated house.  Lakhabhai shared his journey, which we have captured and shared in the attached video. As the family stays of government wasteland we have asked him not to  build a pucca house. Although his savings are enough to  help him build a one room house. He repaid the entire loan amount of Rs. 30k without missing an instalment. Lakhabhai intends to upscale his business now for which he needs bigger amount from VSSM.

VSSM’s has envisaged to provide dignified living to the marginalised nomadic  communities and the interest free loans are doing just that.  Also the Dafer community he belongs to needs our trust and support. Our policies need to be more inclusive for communities like these. This helps ensure  they improve their image amongst the police and administration. The unwarranted  police harassment of Dafers will stop  when they see the Dafer individuals working and earning rightful incomes like so.

'બુન લાખો બોલુ સુ. તમે ક્યો સો ને કે હવે આડા અવળા રસ્તા મેલી સીધા રસ્તે ચડી જાવ તે ઈ હાટુ મારે લોણ જોવે સે'

'લોન લઈને શું કરવા ના?'

'મુ જ્યાં રઉં સુ ન્યાં અમારા તો ઘર સે જ પણ બાજુમાં ફકેટરીએ સે. શાકબકાલુ, નાસ્તાના પડીકા અન થોડો કરિયાણાનો સોમાન એવું બધુ થોડ થોડું રાખુ તોય મારા જોગુ નેહરી જાય'

'પણ તમે પહેલાં કોઈ દિવસ ધંધો કર્યો નથી તો આવડશે?'

'આ દુનિયામાં કોઈ ક્યાં એની માના પેટમાંથી શીખીને બારો આયો તો બધાય શીખ્યા તો અમે ચમ નઈ શીખીએ?'

'સારુ તોહીદ પાહે ફોમ ભરાવી દેજો અને બહુ મોટી રકમનું સાહસ નો કરતા બધુ ધીમે ધીમે કરવું સારુ'

'ઈ નો કેવું પડે બુન. ફારમ ભરી મેલુ પહી ઝટ કરી દેજો'

'હા'

અમે લાખાભાઈને ત્રીસ હજારની લોન આપી. એમણે ફોટોમાં દેખાય એવો સરસ ગલ્લો કર્યો. લાખાભાઈ એક ચોપડી ભણ્યા નથી. પણ વ્યવહાર બરાબર આવડે. ગલ્લામાંથી રોજની છસો - સાતસોની આવક થાય છે એમાંથી એમણે પોતાનું સરસ ઘર પણ બનાવ્યું. લાખાભાઈના ઘરનાએ મને એમણે બાંધેલું અને સજાવેલું ઘર બતાવ્યું જે ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે. પોતાના ધંધાની વાત પણ લાખાભાઈએ આ સાથેના વિડીયોમાં કરી છે.

સરકારી ખરાબાની જમીનમાં રહે છે એટલે પાકુ ઘર બાંધવાની અમે ના પાડી, નહીં તો થોડી બચત કરીને એક રૃમનું ઘર બાંધવાની ક્ષમતા તો હવે થઈ ગઈ છે.

તેમણે લીધેલી લોન એક હપ્તો ચુક્યા વગર એમણે ભરપાઈ પણ કરી દીધી. હવે મોટો ધંધો કરવા બીજી લોન આપવા તેમણે કહ્યું.

બીજી લોન પણ આપીશું. મૂળ તો લાખાભાઈ જેવા સૌ તકવંચિતો બે પાંદડે થાય એ તો ઉદૃશ્ય છે અમારો..

વળી એ જે સમાજમાંથી છે એ ડફેર સમાજના સૌ મહેનત કરી રોજી રોટી રળતા થાય, પોલીસ એમને પજવે નહીં ને સમાજ એમને માનભેર જુએ એ સ્વપ્ન પણ અમે સેવ્યું છે..એટલે આ સમાજનો દરેક માણસ સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરીને આર્થિક રીતે સ્વતંત્ર થાય તે જરૃરી..

VSSM livelihood program helps prakash change his mindset...

Prakash, is wise beyond his age. He resides with his family at a Bawri community  settlement called Gulbai Tekra in Ahmedabad. 

Champa and Prakash were at our  office today to pay the instalment for Rs. 30,000 interest free loan VSSM has provided him. The loan was used to start a retail venture of selling wrist watches.

“How is work, Prakash?” I inquired.

“Very good!” he replied hesitantly.

“We have never seen what is your business. We simply have to believe whatever you say!!” I joked  with this extremely shy chap. This brought a broad smile on his face.

The next he came back in the afternoon with his watch shop.

“Ben, this is my business!!”

“So has the loan benefited you in any way or you have just spend it away??”

Prakash shyly looked towards his wife and replied, “It has been a great help, Ben!! The money I earned supported her delivery, we bought gold jewellery worth Rs. 42,000!!” Obedient Champa moved her head covering to show  us the earrings she was wearing.

“What are your  dreams, Prakash? Where do you aim for the future?”

“I want to buy my own house!!’

“Where, in Gulbai Tekra?”

“No, not Gulbai Tekra. The culture there is not conducive. Children cannot grow well there. I want to raise my children into a fine human beings and achieving this in Gulbai Tekra looks difficult.”

Prakash is dreaming something that we have been dreaming for past couple of years. To enable the Bawri community integrate with other urban communities. It is crucial they move beyond  the orthodox and medieval mindsets of their community to progress well. This is something Prakash has realised.

Champa has been keeping a piggy bank at home, Prakash sells watches worth Rs. 1200 to 1500 every day.

Our Amiben has convinced her to buy monthly groceries and save the money with some back. Champa has agreed to make this shift.

We wish Champa and Prakash much  happiness and success in life.

પ્રકાશ ઉંમરમાં નાનો પણ સમજણ બહુ પાક્કી.
ગુલબાઈ ટેકરામાં આવેલી #બાવરી(મારવાડી દેવીપૂજક) વસાહતમાં એ રહે. પત્ની ચંપા સાથે આજે એ ઓફીસ પર આવ્યો.
VSSMમાંથી એણે ઘડ઼િયાળનો વેપાર કરવા માટે 30,000ની વગર વ્યાજે લોન લીધી હતી. લોનનો હપ્તો ભરવા એ ગઈ કાલે આવ્યો.
'કામ કેવું ચાલે છે પ્રકાશ?' એવું પુછતા એણે શરમાતા શરમાતા 'બહુ હારુ' એમ કહ્યું.
થોડી મજામાં મે કહ્યું, 'અમે તો જોયું નથી તુ શાનો વેપાર કરે છે. એટલે હારુ ચાલે એ તુ કે ને મારે માનવાનું.' એ હસ્યો.

આજે બપોરે પ્રકાશ એની ઘડિયાળની દુકાન સાથે ઓફીસ પર આવ્યો અને કહ્યું,
'બેન આ મારો વેપાર..'
'લોનમાંથી કાંઈ ફાયદો થયો કે ખાધુ પીધુ ને રાજ કર્યું.' થોડું શરમાતા એણે એની ઘરવાળી સામે જોયું અને કહ્યું,
'ફાયદો થ્યો ને બેન આની ડીલીવરી કરાવી. એ સિવાય 44,000ના આના દાગીના કરાવ્યા. '
કહ્યાગરી ચંપાએ તુરત માથા પરનું ઓઢણું આઘુ કરીને કાનમાં પહેરેલી બુટ્ટી બતાવી.
સપનું શું છે પ્રકાશ? આગળ ક્યાં પહોંચવું છે?
પ્રકાશે કહ્યું, 'ગુલબાઈ ટેકરામાંથી નીકળવું છે. મારુ પોતાનું ઘર લેવું છે.'
'ઘર ક્યાં ગુલબાઈ ટેકરામાં લેવું છે?'
'ના બેન ત્યાંના સંસ્કાર સારા નથી. મારા છોકરાંઓને ભણાવીને સરસ માણસ બનાવવા છે ગુલબાઈ ટેકરામાં આ બધુ બહુ અઘરુ.'
બાવરી પરિવારો અન્ય સમાજ સાથે ભળે. અન્ય સમાજની સાથે તેમના ઘરો હોય તેવું અમારુ સ્વપ્ન પ્રકાશ જેવા યુવાનો જોવા માંડ્યા છે.
એક વખત પોતાના સમાજના વાડામાંથી બહાર નીકળશે તો દુનિયા બદલાશે એ વાત પ્રકાશ સમજી ગયો.
ચંપાએ ઘરમાં બચતનો ગલ્લો રાખ્યો છે. દિવસના 1200 થી 1500નો ધંધો પ્રકાશ આરામથી કરી લે છે.
અમારા અમીબહેને એને મહિનાનું સામટુ કરિયાણું ભરાવવા સમજાવ્યો અને બચત ગલ્લાની જગ્યાએ બેંકમાં કરવા કહ્યું.
ચંપાએ એ માટે હા પાડી..
સુખી થાવની ભાવના સાથે પ્રકાશ ખુબ તરક્કી કરે તેવી શુભેચ્છા
ફોટોમાં એણે બતાવેલો એનો વેપાર તમે પણ જુઓ.
ઓફીસ પર વેપાર બતાવવા આવ્યો ને અમારી હોસ્ટેલની દીકરીઓએ ઘડિયાળ જોવા અને ખરીદવા પડાપડી કરી.
સાથે એનો નાનકડો વિડીયો... એના મોંઢે એની વાત સાઁભળજો મજા પડશે..
