In the rural Gujarat there exists an occupation of collecting hair that women shed while combing. The shed hair for these rural women was of no value until they understood its value!!! The hair shed by them are collected by men who go and sell them in market. Earlier they hair was collected for free but now most of them exchange it for some goods like hair clips, hair bands, balloons, small toys etc etc. The men collecting the hair are like middlemen and don’t stand to gain much as the earning is just enough to kept kitchen fires burning. Its the merchant that makes the most and calls the shots..
Amratbhai Bajaniya and Haribhai Bajaniya the uncle-nephew duo stay in Jalalabad village of Patan’s Sami block. These men earn their living by collecting hair, while their family remains stationed in Jalalabad, the duo keeps wandering in nearby villages to return home once a week or so. With limited cash on hand the amount of goods they bought to exchange for hair was not much. Less hair to sell means the merchant calling shots.
VSSM’s Mohanbhai knew the duo so offered them to help with providing a loan of Rs. 10,000. The money is their revolving fund. They have stopped exchanging hair for goods instead they buy hair on cash. The purchase price is Rs. 120 for 100 grams while they sell it at Rs. 190 to 200 for 100 grams. The profit is good and with the cash on hand they can buy more hair and go for selling them after collecting substantial amount meaning the merchant too will weigh it well. Mohandbhai has cultivated the habit of regular saving. Amratbhai is looking forward to the day when he can own a shop and with regular saving he sure will be able to realise it soon. “ Not having cash on hand is a very difficult situation and I have undergone the difficulties one undergoes when they do not have enough cash on hand, I plan to help other men in my community once I have enough savings.” Such thoughtfulness, it reflects the pain Amratbhai has endured. The loan as revolving fund as equipped him to increase in income.

બોરિયા કે અન્ય વસ્તુ ખરીદવાની ઝંઝટ હવે મટી ગઈ છે...
અમરતભાઈ બજાણિયા અને હરિભાઈ બજાણિયા પાટણ જીલ્લાના સમીતાલુકાના જલાલાબાદગામમાં રહે. બંને ભાઈઓ માથું ઓળતા કાંસકામાં ઉતરીને આવતાં વાળ ભેગા કરીને વેચવાનું કામ કરે અને તે માટે વિચરણ કરે. એમનો પરિવાર જલાલાબાદમાં જ રહે પણ બંને ભાઈઓ જુદા જુદા પ્રદેશોમાં જઈને વાળ એકત્રિત કરવાનું કરે અને અઠવાડિયે એક વખત ઘરે આવે. ગામડામાં કાંસકામાં ઉતરીને આવતાં વાળ લોકો એક જગ્યાએ ભેગા કરીને રાખતા જે બજાણિયા પરિવારો લઇ લેતાં. પણ જેમ જેમ લોકોને ખ્યાલ આવતો ગયો કે, વાળનાતો બજાણીયાને પૈસા મળે એટલે એ લોકો પણ મફત વાળ આપવાનું બંધ કરીને પૈસા કે વસ્તુઓ માંગતા થયાં.
બજાણિયા ભાઇઓ બોરિયા, બકલ, ફુગ્ગાની સામે વાળ ખરીદે અને વેચે. હાથમાં મૂડી ના હોય એટલે રોજ રોજ ભેગા થતાં વાળ વેચે સામે વસ્તુઓ ખરીદે અને થોડો ઘણો નફો ભેગો થાય એ ઘરે લઇ જાય. હાથમાં મૂડી હોય તો વાળ સામે આપવાનો સામાન એક સામટો ખરીદી શકાય અને રોજે રોજે વાળ વેચવા જવું ના પડે. મળતર પણ સારું મળે.. આ પરિવારોને આપણે સારી રીતે જાણીએ. એમની સ્થિતિ જોઇને રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ ની લોન આપણે બંને ભાઈઓને આપી. બંને ભાઈઓ આમ તો સંબંધે કાકા- ભત્રીજા થાય.. પહેલાં રોજ કમાઈ અને રોજ ખાઈ શકાય એમ હતું. હવે થોડી બચત પણ થાય છે. vssmના કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈને બંને ભાઈઓએ બેંકમાં બચત કરવાનું હવે શરુ કરીશું એમ પણ કહ્યું છે.
અમરતભાઈ સાથે ફોન પર વાત થઇ. ધંધો કેવો ચાલે છે એ બાબતે પૂછ્યું તો કહ્યું, ‘ હવે હાથ પર પૈસા રહે છે એટલે જ હવે બેંકમાં જમા કરાવવા છે.. ધીમે ધીમે સમીમાં જ વાળ ભેગા કરવાની દુકાન કરવી છે. બજાણિયા વાળ ભેગા કરવા જાય અને હાથ પર મૂડી ના હોય એટલે જે વેઠવું પડે, એ મેં વેઠયું છે.. દુકાન થાય તો હુ લોકોને હાથ પર રહે એ માટે મૂડી આપીશ. હું હવે ફુગ્ગા અને બોરીયા સામે વાળ નથી ખરીદતો. રૂ.૧૨૦ના ૧૦૦ ગ્રામ વાળ લોકો પાસેથી ખરીદી છું. અને રૂ.૨૦૦ કે રૂ.૧૯૦માં વેચું છું. બોરિયા કે અન્ય વસ્તુ ખરીદવાની ઝંઝટ હવે મટી ગઈ. હાથ પર રૂ.૧૦,૦૦૦ હોય ત્યાં સુધી વાળ ખરીદી શકું અને પછી સામટા વેચી આવું છું.’
