VSSM supports Bhurabhai purchase a second hand jeep to ferry passengers...

Parshbhai Raval driving the purchased jeep..
Bhurabhai Raval stays in Deesa, Banaskantha. Both Bhurabhai and his son Paresh ferry passengers in a rented jeep. Everyday they rent the jeep for Rs. 500. At the end of the day the jeep needs to be returned back to its owner and if some days they have to attend to another work the owner gives away the jeep to some one else. Than they  keep waiting for their turn. The father-son duo felt that if they had their own jeep it would save them from all these apprehensions and bring them good earnings.  Buying a second hand jeep costs around Rs. 1,70,000. So how to go about was a question!!

When Bhurabhai came to know about VSSM’s initiative of lending money to nomadic communities to help them rebuild their livelihoods he approached VSSM team member Maheshbhai with a proposal for a loan to buy a second hand jeep. Maheshbhai discussed with Bhurabhai regarding his savings and his ability to pay back the loan. Maheshbhai referred his case to VSSM and helped him with getting a bank loan as well. So with his saving and loan from VSSM and bank Bhurabhai purchased a second hand jeep. Both father and son now drive separate vehicles and have doubled their income. They plan to purchase another jeep once the loan for this one is paid off.

The support VSSM is extending to such individuals from nomadic communities is helping them attain financial security and understand financial management.

Not just providing a loan but mentoring the nomadic families in improving their financial health….

Deviben Devipujak at her residence she showed
her the types of watches she sells.
Deviben Devipujak along with her husband  Bahadurbhai, and two daughters stays in the Gulbai Tekra area of Ahmedabad. Bahadurbhai works in a grocery shop during the day and sets up his kiosk to sell home decor stuff on the footpath at Law Garden, one of the posh locality of Ahmedabad.

The gap in the income and expenditure skewed the business economics of this family. Normally the profit in reinvested in buying the products but since the family couldn’t save enough borrowing money from private money lenders became necessary. Deviben has also put her jewellery as guarantee at a private money lender. On the face of it the system seems to be working well but a close examination would reveal the are under deep debt, enjoy absolutely no independence and function as sales men of established wholesale merchants.

VSSM’s Elaben the team member who works closely with the nomadic communities staying in an around Ahmedabad is much aware of the social and economic conditions of these families, she knew the struggle  Deviben and her family endures. Elaben referred Deviben to VSSM for a loan of Rs. 20,000. She also provided guidance to the family in managing the finances by advising them to not incur more debts. She also asked Deviben to support her husband with his business. Now the couple works together and the earning have improved. The debt they would incur every 15 days has stopped, they haven’t taken any money since last 4 months. Business is doing okay as well.

The couple is happy and the mood is upbeat. They intend to educate their daughters well, save and get back the jewelry she has deposited as guarantee. We hope they are able to do that at the earliest.

When we went to meet Deviben at her residence she showed (as seen in the picture) her the types of watches she sells.

A loan from VSSM helps Rameshbhai Nat start his own venture..

Rameshbhai Nat performing acrobatics
The plight of daily wage earners is extremely pathetic in our country, providing absolutely no security against family emergencies, medical emergencies etc. The day you don’t work you hardly are left with money to feed the family. The daily income isn’t enough to enable savings for the rainy day…which believe us are many when they are engaged in extremely labour intensive jobs.

The case of Rameshbhai Nat goes on to prove just that. ..

Rameshbhai Nat from Deesa in Banaskantha earned his living by performing acrobatic acts on the road side.Sometimes he got diagnosed with TB. The illness soon began taking toll on him. The family’s sole earning member in bad health meant difficulties for the family as well. The responsibility of keeping the kitchen fires burning, taking Rameshbhai to hospital, taking care of family fell on Rameshbhai’s wife. After a while she also felt the exhaustion go the increased work load.

VSSM knew Rameshbhai well but some how  got to know about his condition after a while. He needed immediate medical attention. We referred him to Civil hospital but as the treatment there diid not suit Rameshbhai he was hesitant to go to Civil hospital. Hence, we began his treatment with a private clinic and intake of nutritious food was ensured. We enrolled his kids with the Doliya hostel. Gradually Rameshbhai recovered from his illness and his health improved.

One day we received a call from Rameshbhai, “ Ben, the articles required by me to carry out acrobatic acts are with some one else. If i bring it on rent I would be spending more than earning but, if I invest in purchasing my own articles  I would be earning and saving more. Right now I do not have that kind of money to invest, if VSSM loans me Rs. 10,000 I can buy my own stuff and pay the money back on regular instalments. We got his point and gave him a loan of Rs. 10,000. With the amount he has purchased the required items.

Rameshbhai is happy with his independent venture while his kids are doing well in Doliya hostel..

VSSM helps Devipujak Tejmalbhai For Livelihood

VSSM Helps Devipujak Tejmalbhai For Livelihood
VSSM Helps Devipujak Tejmalbhai  For Livelihood
VSSM’s support helps Tejmalbhai improve his standard of living….

Tejmalbhai Devipujak stays in a shanty near Hawaii Pillar in Deesa, Banaskatha. He and his wife Sonalben, earn their living by selling grass, the couple harvests grass (cattle fodder) from neighbouring farms, brings it to an open plot where lot of cows graze, people come and buy grass from them and feed the grazing cows. Many Hindus follow this early morning  ritual of feeding the cows and individuals in the business of selling grass make brisk business, earning was good for Tejmalbhai as well  but the problem he faced was getting the hand cart on rent every day. The lorry rental service opened at 9 in the morning  by this time it got very late for him to bring the grass from the farms. The  couple sets out every morning at 4,  harvest and load grass in an auto  rickshaw and later load it in a hand cart and bring it to the plot for selling. Sometimes where the lorry owner needs the cart he would come and take it from Tejmalbhai in the middle of his business hours, so what if the cart was rented for an entire day!!! He couldn’t question the action since  there was this fear  that it could lead to denial of cart on rent on next day.

Tejmalbhai had recently moved to Deesa and VSSM’s Maheshbhai knew him. When Tejmalbhai became aware of VSSM’s livelihood initiative he requested for a loan to buy a hand cart. VSSM provided a loan of Rs. 5,500/- to which he added some more and bought a hand cart. The couple now takes the cart to the farms that helps them save the rickshaw fare. Sonalben now sells grass from another spot, almost doubling  the couple’s daily  income. They pay an instalment of Rs. 500 every month. Their standard of living is gradually improving. From a shanty they have moved to stay in a decent rented house. Tejmalbhai now wants to buy a Chakda  an indigenous loading vehicle of Gujarat, so that he can load and ferry more grass.

The collapse of traditional occupations are forcing the nomadic families reinvent their livelihood sources and such success stories spread a sense of joy amongst the team of VSSM and people associated with it.

Babubhai Bajaniyaa starts his independent venture from VSSM’s support.

Babubhai and his wife at their kiosk
Babubhai Bajaniyaa of Kuvaradgaum in Patan’s Sankheshawar district sings Bhajan’s - devotional songs, to earn his living. Along with singing Bhajan’s he also has developed a knack of repairing musical instruments. But both these activities weren’t enough to meet family’s financial needs, requiring Babubhai and his wife to work as masons. With three school going kids money has alway been an issue with this family.

Babubhai got to know about VSSM’s initiative of providing interest free loan to needy but enterprising and hard working individuals from Nomadic communities. Babubhai shared his idea of owning a shop of selling and repairing musical instruments  requesting a loan of Rs. 20,000. VSSM’s Mohanbhai recommended Babubhai’s request to the organisation after understanding the feasibility of his  proposal.

Babubhai has opened a small kiosk types shop ( as seen in the picture)  in Sankheshwar for sales and repairs of musical instruments. More than sales lot of repair jobs come his way. The folk musicians of the region know him, call up and come to get their instruments repaired. Along with the shop Babubhai continues to work as mason so the income has doubled. “Earlier running the household was an issue so saving for rainy day was out of question whereas he dual income now enables us to save,”confesses Bachubhai.

VSSM helps 70 year old Amratbhai Raval to earn living for his family

Amaratbhai Raval (70)with his cart bought under
VSSM livelihood programme
70 year old Amratbhai Raval from Banaskantha’s Deesa, belongs to the nomadic community of Raval, an extremely  hard-working community. Most of the Raval men work as loaders or cart pullers in the grains and wholesale  markets of towns and cities.

Amratbhai’s only son Ashok, fell into bad company and did not work to earn living for his wife and 6 children compelling Amratbhai to earn for Ashok’s brood. Amratbhai requested VSSM to extend him an interest free loan of Rs. 5500 to buy a push cart. With the loan he bought a cart and began working at Deesa’s  main market, earning Rs. 150 to 200 daily.

Somehow, over a period of couple of months Ashok  had a change of heart when he saw his old and frail  father working hard to feed his grand children. Ashok’s wife bought an old auto rickshaw and he became earning from the auto. “So why do you need to work now that your son has began earning, as such pushing cart is hard work, why don’t you sell it off?” we asked.

“ Ashok’s family is  large and the kids are small, if they’ll eat well they’ll be able to grow well and work hard in future. I earn for Ashok’s small children..” replied Amratbhai, the loving and concerned  grandfather.  It was this concern that compelled Amratbhai to engage in such laborious livelihood. We are glad for such hard working people striving to make the fate of their families brighter than it was for them…...

Rameshbhai with his vegetable cart

Rameshbhai and Manjuben are an extremely hard working couple from Diyodar. Rameshbhai works as a daily wage earning manual labour while Manjuben, with a basket mounted on her head, sets out everyday to sell vegetables.  The couple’s two elder daughters are married, staying with their husbands while the younger sons are studying. The main bread winner of the family is Manjuben because finding work everyday isn’t possible for Rameshbhai. The house practical runs on the income of Manjuben, saving money for rainy days was an impossible task for this family.

The family always remained short of even meeting the basic needs hence Rameshbhai  had a strong urge to  change his livelihood, he contemplated  having  a hand cart to sell vegetables,  but with no savings and income that was barely sufficient buying a hand cart was an impossible task.

Rameshbhai stays in a makeshift dwelling on a government land, since his name features in BPL list VSSM’s Naran has been striving hard to ensure Rameshbhai is allotted a residential plot. Naran remains  in close contact with families like Rameshbhai. They meet often to discuss the progress on their various applications and future directions. Rameshbhai knew about VSSM’s initiative of supporting nomadic individuals to start their own enterprise. He mentioned his intent to Naranbhai. “My wife sells vegetables and I also have a knack of selling vegetables. If VSSM supports us in purchasing a hand cart, two of us can do separate business and soon improve the economic condition of our family,” he suggested.

Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM provided a loan of Rs. 5500 to which Rameshbhai also added a small amount. He bought a hand cart and now moves to various locality of Diyodar selling vegetables whereas Manjuben sells vegetables in the main market. The couple is working hard and earning well. They have moved to stay in a rented house now and are managing to save some amount as well. The EMIs to VSSM are also nearing completion.

Women Empowerment for Nomadic Communities Women by VSSM

Creating opportunities of starting independent business for women of nomadic communities….

Madhuben Raval resides in Deesa’s Regiment area. Having learnt tailoring she looked forward to start her own tailoring venture  but lack of funds  to buy a sewing machine stopped her from taking the plunge. Since she was was aware of VSSM providing loans to nomadic individuals  wishing to start their own small venture, Madhuben approached VSSM’s team member Maheshbhai with a request of a loan for buying a sewing machine. VSSM lent her Rs. 10,000 for the same. The neighbourhood where Madhuben resides has a tailoring shop so finding work was a challenge initially but Madhuben is working her way out, she has spread a word about her new venture and work has began to flow in. She earns RS. 100 daily and is happy about it because working from home means  she can take care of the house and family as well. She is also teaching tailoring to  her elder daughter who also helps her mother once she is back from school  both of them together are managing work well.

The rising cost of living is making it increasingly necessary for both husband and wife to earn and manage the family finances, the Nomadic Communities who have lost their traditional occupations where women’s contribution was at par with men, are in deep dilemma but with families prepared to hone new skills and such opportunities being created the future sure looks upbeat for them...

VSSM’s pledge to make the nomadic communities debt free

Amidst one of the very posh localities of Ahmedabad called  Gulbai Tekra is nestled a large ghetto called Hollywood, a slum that  houses a large number of nomadic families. Most of these families are involved in the craft of making statues from plaster of paris. They are mainly Ganesha statues that are sold during the annual Ganapati Mahotsav.

Dhulabhai and Ratanben with the statues they create
Dhulabhai and Ratanben with the statues they create
Ratanben, her husband Dhulabhai, three daughters and one son stay in this slum. While one of daughters is married and lives in  her own home the other two daughters help their parents in making statues.  The couple’s only son  has just cleared his 10th grade. The statue making business is seasonal one requiring lot of pre-planning, lack of which results into a flop season and no earnings. The statues have to be prepared four months before the season approaches and requires substantial capital investment. The returns on which are only after the statues are sold off. For the rest of the year Ratanben sells cosmetics and imitation jewellery while the daughters work as household helps at houses in neighbourhood, the combined  incomes of which helps feed the family during the rest of the year. Such families do not have any savings to fall back on, requiring them to borrow money at  hefty interest rates from private money lenders or some relatives. Once the statues are sold and they have money on hand the debts are paid off.  Also since Dhulabhai doesn’t possess any other skill he needs to borrow money whenever some need arises. But they do remain trapped into a permanent cycle of debt. Even the family’s combined  income from all the occupations isn’t enough to allow them to save for the rainy day. Any emergency would mean borrowing money and incurring debt!!! That is how life goes on for this as well as many other families like them….

VSSM through its various initiatives is much involved with this community. VSSM’s Elaben has suggested to these families to work towards creating a corpus by borrowing money from relatives and VSSM (both interest free funds) and do a proper business this year. The loan  is to be repaid from the money that is earned from other occupations.  If need be work more and work harder. The aim will be to make good profit in this season. Ratanben grasped the matter well and took a loan of Rs. 20,000 from VSSM, brought Rs. 40,000 from her family members and created a fund of Rs. 60,000 to work with. Dhulabhai has began making statues and expects brisk sales this year. Ratanben’s expects making good profit since all the funds are interest free.

"I want to educate my son well, get my daughters married without incurring further debt. We will be able to pay off the VSSM loan from the work I and my daughters do, so we will be saving Rs. 20,000 in this season itself!!” says a rather confident Ratanben.

Livelihood Generation for Meer community by VSSM

VSSM’s efforts heralding a gradual change in the lives of extremely marginalised communities…...

Livelihood Generation for Meer Community of Gujarat By VSSM
Livelihood Generation for Meer Community of Gujarat By VSSM
Samakhiyali region in Kutchh has a sizeable population of families from Meer Community. These families earn their living by working as menial labour, goat farming, selling lace and borders etc. VSSM has been working towards helping these families get their identity documents, livelihood etc. The  families have received Voter ID cards and Ration Cards. Families who have been given loan by VSSM have began earning well from new ventures they have created.

One such family is of Fatehbhai and Kaliben - an extremely hard working couple. Fatehbhai earns from goat and sheep farming, selling the sheep wool for living. The earnings are low because he could afford to  buy and rear on 7 to 10 of these cattle. Fatehbhai wanted to change his profession so he  requested Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM to lend him Rs. 15,000 to buy lace and borders (VSSM had supported some individuals in the settlement for the same). He bought the material from Surat. Now the couple sells lace in the bazaar of Samakhiyali and Bhacahu and if there is a need  they also go to villages. The business is good enabling them to pay Rs. 1000 as instalment and save Rs. 500 every month.

“Life seems to be changing for better now. Gone are the days when we had to drink water to and fill our hungry stomach. We have also bought a barrel to store grains. The earning is enough to help us buy good  amount of food. Your trusting us and lending money has been a blessing otherwise who keeps faith in people who wander, have no permanent address!!” shared Fatehbhai.

Fatehbhai is contemplating to enrol his children in VSSM run hostel in Bhachau. This particular hostel was a Balghar before and now with support of Arati Foundation it will be functioning as a hostel.

The efforts we have been putting in with the support of our well-wishers and supporters is gradually changing lives of some of the most marginalised communities and vulnerable sections of society. We are extremely grateful for all of yours unflinching support.

Livelihood For Nomadic Communities by VSSM
One of the major endeavours of VSSM is to enable the nomadic communities earn a dignified living. We have been consistently sharing with you the state of livelihoods of the various  nomadic communities. Mechanisation,  industrialisation, urbanisation, environmental changes, wildlife laws etc.  have affected the age old and  traditional livelihoods of the nomadic communities across our country. The implementation of Wildlife Protection Act rendered the Vadee - Madaree Communities jobless while the Bharthari have lost their music because the recent  generations  haven’t been interested in listening to their Ektara…instead they ask them to work and earn their living.... Since last couple of decades the various nomadic communities are finding it extremely difficult to survive on the very skills their forefathers were revered for….want an irony….

Most of these livelihoods have become obsolete while there are some that are practiced just because the practicing communities do not have any option but to cling to them inspite of the fact that these professions  hardly earn them a square meal.

How to reintegrate the livelihoods of these extremely marginalised and  poor population was the question that kept arising all the time we addressed one after another issues challenging the nomadic communities. At one point we began training them for trades like electrical, plumbing, masonry , tailoring, mobile repairing etc. professions that have great demand both in rural and urban regions. It was an uphill task to convince them to take up these trades, link them with the market after the completion of training as most of the trainees never made efforts to search jobs in tune with the training received. Eventually we the effort had to be terminated the energy, money and time spent on the entire program wasn’t giving desired results, bringing us to same question what to do for the livelihoods of the nomads???

There was this demand from some individuals from these communities to give them loan to help them start their own enterprise or ventures. We found the proposal to be risky as these families continuously keep moving so how will they repay the month instalments was the challenge but we had to begin somewhere so why not experiment and give it a try was the consensus from the Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM team. Initially we gave  loan to a couple of  individuals.  And with the increase in positive experiences we began lending more… During the past 1 year we have supported 120 individuals with the total amount of loan being Rs. 17,18,500 of which Rs. 5,44,550 have already been returned. So far the experiences have been very encouraging.

With the increase in lending amount there emerged a need to setup a revolving fund to meet the needs of loans. The following Samaritans  helped us set-up the revolving fund..

Days Business Finance Pvt. Ltd. -   Rs. 5,00,000
Pragnya Girish Sherdalal Foundation  Rs. 5,00,000
N. A. Sonawala   Rs. 2,50,000
Blue Cross Laboratories    Rs. 5,00,000
Shri. Paresh Vora        Rs.       10,000

Total        Rs. 17,60,000

In the year 2015-16 we are looking towards supporting 150 more individuals and from Rs. 17,60,000 we plan to increase amount of revolving fund to Rs. 25, 00,000 ( 25 lacs)

The financial support has to a very great extent changed the lives of 120 families, it has enabled these families to do jobs they like allowing them to maintain their inherent nature of enterprise. All their lives and historically as well these communities have worked for themselves be it making baskets, sharpening  knives, creating iron tools etc etc. they pursued their professions on their own terms and hence it is difficult for them to work on the back and call of others. Being involved in their own businesses means they are their own boss and can put in extra hours to increase sales and profits. All these families are doing exactly that to change the destiny of their families……

We are hopeful that with you continued support more families will be abel to earn and live with dignity.

Babubhai Bajaniyaa, his wife, 2 daughters and a son stay in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad. The couple’s two elder daughters are married and moved to their own homes. Babubhai irons clothes during the day time and drives a rented auto in the nights. His wife works as household help at times taking her daughters along to help her out. All the 4 kids do go to school though.

Inspite of the couple working really hard,  making ends meet remained a challenge. The rent of the auto is Rs. 200 per day plus fuel charges, “ driving rickshaw isn’t a very lucrative, the  income from driving rickshaw is just enough to buy some vegetables for the family,” says Babubhai.  Had Babubhai owned the rickshaw he would save substantial amount every month, Babubhai desired to buy a rickshaw but that required lot of money which the family did now have. The couple had managed to save Rs. 20,000 but that wasn’t enough to buy an auto.

VSSM’s Ilaben knew Babubhai. She knew Babubhai wished to buy a rickshaw , she explained to Babubhai that instead of buying a new vehicle get a second hand rickshaw  and once he has  saved  enough get a brand new one!! Ilaben helped Babubhai in getting Rs. 30,000 loan from Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM. He added his savings of Rs. 20,000 and bought a second hand rickshaw fro Rs. 50,000.

Babubhai Bajaniyaa Nomadic Tribes still works the same way irons clothes in during the day ash drives auto in the night. Sometimes when he gets a good customer he drives during the day. But he does have to catch up with his sleep which he does during the day by taking breaks from  ironing clothes. He saves Rs. 5000 to Rs. 5500 every month the amount he paid as auto rent earlier. “I want to educate my children well and give them a better future, it seems I will be able to do that now!!” shared Babubhai.
