We haven’t known each other well, you did not even examine if we have any addictions!! You responded to the call of a poor. How can we ever forget your assistance to us? I have witnessed the amount of hard you put in for the development and empowerment of the nomadic and de-notified tribes. Almighty is going to be very happy with you. 3 years back during the Patan floods, we lost all our belongings, you loaned us Rs. 10,000 and gave us an understanding of how to do to business. We began making coal. You helped us develop the habit of regular savings. We have saved, bought anklets made with 500 grams silver. Later we also got another loan of Rs. 30,000. Life has been good after that.

Babubhai Raval from  Khakhal, Patan is an honest and hardworking human being.  These days he is stationed near Ahmedabad’s Ghuma village where he makes coal from babul wood. Once a daily wage earner,  he now employs around 20 people. He was at our office recently to pay the instalment. “May almighty give you the ability to continue doing what you are, you have the blessings of the poor!” Babubhai said while resting his hand over my head to bless me.

A few days back I received a call from him. “Ben, I will come to pay the last instalment in the next 3-4 days. I got gold earnings worth Rs. 64,000 made, will bring the bill when I come to see you. This is all because of you. I have managed to save Rs. 50,000 which I have kept with me as I need to feed the family as well as the 20 people working here!” Babukaka showed me the invoice which I have shared here. I was delighted to learn about his progress.

 “Kaka, you have made the best use of the loan. Also, save as much as you can. This is all because of your efforts and almighty’s blessings, we have just played the role of enablers.”

 “That is true, but look at the wealthy around us. God hasn’t given them the ability to think the way you do!! The nomadic tribes will always be grateful to you. Now that we have money we understand its strength. We too will educate our kids as others do. We are on the move to earn living but my daughter-in-law has stayed back in Khakhal so that my grandchildren can go to school. They too should have a better future!!”

“This is the only vice I have, nothing else!” Babukaka said while bringing out a bidi from his pocket.

I smiled at his honesty and prayed for his happiness.

 આપણી એવી કોઈ ઓળખોણ નઈ, અમે વ્યસની સીએ ક નઈ ઈનીયે તમે ચો તપાસ કીધીતી? બસ ભગવોન ભરોસે અમન દુઃખી મોણસ હમજી ન તમે મદદ કીધી. તે અમાર તમારો ગણ કોય દાડો ભુલાય?

આ વિચરતી જાતિન આગળ લાબ્બા તમે બધા ચેટલી મેનત કરોસો મુ સાક્ષી સું ઈનો. ભગવોન તમારુ ખુબ હારુ કરસે. બાચી તઈણ વરહ પેલાં પાટણમાં પુર આયું તાણ પુર હારે બધુયે જતુ રયુ'તુ.

તમે દહ હજાર આલ્યા અન ધંધો કરવાની બુદ્ધી આલી. તે કોલસા પાડવાનો ધંધો શરૃ કીધો. દહ હજારમોંથી પોનસો ગ્રોમ ચોદીના કલ્લા કરાયા અને ઘરમો થોડી બચતેય થઈ. એ પસી બીજી તરીની લોણ મોહનભાઈએ આલી. તે ઈના પસી તો લીલાલેર થઈ જ્યું.

પાટણના ખાખલના બાબુભાઈ રાવળ. સાવ સીધા સાદા માણસ. અમદાવાદના ઘુમાથી આગળ આવેલા ગામોમાં બાવળમાંથી કોલસા પાડવાનું કામ કરે. પહેલાં ટંકનું લાવી ટંકનું ખાતા. આજે વીસ લોકોને પોતે મજૂરી આપે છે. ઓફીસે લોનનો હપ્તો આપવા આવ્યા ત્યારે માથે હાથ મુકીને,

'આવું કોમ ભગવોન કરાવતા રે, ગરીબોના આશી બોલશે' એમ કહીને આશિર્વાદ આપ્યા.

થોડા દિવસ પહેલાં એમનો ફોન આવ્યો.

'બુન તરી હજારની લોનનો સેલ્લો હપ્તો બાકી સે તે ચાર દાડા કેડે આલી જઈશ. પણ મે ફોન હાઈઠ ન ચાર ચોસઠ હજારની હોનાની બુટ્ટી કરાઈ એ કેવા કર્યો સે. હપ્તો નોખવા આવું તાણ બીલ લેતો આઈશ. આ બધુ તમારા પરતાપે થ્યું. ચાલી પચા હજારની બચતેય થઈ સે. પણ એ હાથવગા રાખવા પડ. વીસ મોણસન ખવારવું અન મારા કટંબનુંયે પુરુ કરવાનું એટલ થોડા હાથમોં રાખવા પડ્'

બાબુકાકા આજે લોનનો હપ્તો આપવા આવ્યા તે બીલ લઈને આવ્યા જે ફોટોમાં મુક્યું છે.

પણ કાકાની વાત સાંભળીને રાજી થઈ જવાયું. મે કહ્યું, 'કાકા તમે લોનનો બરાબર ઉપયોગ કર્યો. બચત કરજો અને આ બધુ ભગવાનની કૃપાથી થાય છે અમે તો નિમિત્ત છીએ'

એ હાચુ પણ પણ દુનિયામોં ચેવા ચેવા પૈસા વાળા પડ્યા સ, ભગવોને એ બધાય ન ચો આવી બુદ્ધી આલી?વિચરતી જાતિઓ તમારો ઓભાર મોન.. અન બુન પૈસા આયા તો બુદ્ધી આઈ. જગત આખુ સોકરાંઓન ભણાવ તે અમેય ભણાબ્બાનું ચાલુ કીધુ. ધંધા હાટે અમે ફરીએ પણ સોકરાંની વહુ ખાખલમાં રે અને મારા સોકરાંના સોકરાંઓન ભણાવ. ઈમનું જીવન તો સુધરઅ...

બાબુકાકા ઓફીસમાંથી બહાર નીકળ્યા અને બીડી કાઢી એમણે કહ્યુું, 'આ એક જ વ્યસન નહી મેલાતું બાકી આડી અવળી બીજી કોઈ લત નહી....'
