Seventy-five years old Shanta Ma resides in Ahmedabad. After the demise of her husband and young son, she began earning her living by selling artificial jewellery and fashion accessories on the roadside. But her physical condition was not keeping pace with her will to keep working. Considering her age, VSSM’s Madhuben offered to send a monthly ration kit, but she refused to accept the offer.

Agreed, I have financial challenges, but if you want to help, buy me goods to stock up my kiosk. I don’t have capital; hence I buy in small quantities and earn in small amounts too. I cannot even pay off the rent of the small room I call home. Nor do I have money to buy medicines if I have health issues. However, if I have more products to sell, I will be able to earn more. Maybe sell at a larger scale.’

How could we not help Shanta Ma! VSSM purchased goods worth Rs. 15,000 for her, it was a pleasure to witness the joy on her face at the sight of the goods she had come to collect at our office. Especially the anklets; looking at them, she tells us, “I have always wanted to buy them, but they are so expensive to stock up.”

Shanta Ma roughs it out to earn a dignified living. When she takes her products to fetes and fairs, she must stay under the open sky, but hard work is what she prefers.

Shanta Ma’s honesty and integrity have won my heart; I hope she inspires many to live diligently.

75   વર્ષના શાંતા મા અમદાવાદમાં રહે. તેમના પતિ અને જુવાન દીકરો ગુજરી ગયા પછી એ બોરિયા, બકલ, કાનની બુટ્ટી વગેરે વેચીને ગુજરાન ચલાવતા. પણ તબીયત હખડ ડખડ રહ્યા કરે. અમારા કાર્યકર મધુબહેને શાંતામાની ઉંમર જોતા દર મહિને તેમને રાશકીટ આપવા કહ્યું પણ એમણે ના પાડી. એમણે કહ્યું, 'તકલીફ તો છે પણ મદદ કરવી હોય તો હું જે ધંધો કરુ તે ધંધા માટે સામાન લાવી આપો. મારી પાસે પૈસાની સગવડ નહીં એટલે થોડો થોડો સામાન લાવી વેચી એમાંથી ચલાવું.  જે ઓરડીમાં ભાડુ ભરી રહુ એ ભાડુ માંડ નીકળે.. બિમારીમાં દવાના પૈસાય ઘણી વખત ન હોય.. પણ જો સામાન વધારે થઈ  જાય તો આવક વધી જાય. પછી તો હું મેળામાં પણ જવું'

આવા કામની હોંશ રાખવાવાળા શાંતા માને અમે 15,000નો સામાન લઈ આપ્યો.એ સામાન લેવા ઓફીસ આવ્યા ત્યારે બધુ જોઈને રાજી થઈ ગયા. પગની પાયલ જોઈને તો કહે, મને આ ખરીદવાની બહુ ઈચ્છા હતી પણ મોંધો સામાન આવો તો હું ક્યાંથી લઈ શકું?

શાંતામા મેળામાં સામાન વેચવા જાય ત્યારે મેળાના સ્થળે બે ત્રણ દિવસ ખુલ્લામાં જ રાત્રી રોકાય. બહુ હાડમારી વેઠે.પણ મહેનત કરીને ખાવુ એમને ગમે... એમની આ જિંદાદીલી મને સ્પર્શી ગઈ... આવા મહેનતકશ શાંતામાને પ્રણામ ને મહેનતમાં કામચોરી કરનાર શાંતા મા પાસેથી શીખે...
