“I was eating stones; if you hadn’t helped me, I would still be eating stones.”

The statement surprised me as much as it did to you. Malabhai smirked at our confusion and continued, “we cannot find work here throughout the year. The farmland we own is small and unirrigated, giving us an option for rainfed agriculture only. So, after monsoons, we leave for Palanpur and progress towards Ahmedabad, Surat, or where ever our labor is required to load stone in trucks. Hence, I told you I ate stone!”

Malabhai lives in Banaskantha’s Khatisitaram village of Amirgadh block. It is a predominantly hilly and tribal region. The hilly areas experience abundant monsoon, but post-winters, water resources become scarce. The communities here cannot afford to drill borewells, so drawing water from the well is the only option. And wells, too, are an expensive option because deepening wells on rocky terrain is a challenging task.

Malabhai, Punmabhai, and eight others had 10 feet deep wells whose waters dried after monsoons. These families wanted to deepen their lakes to take a couple more seasons in crops. Mustukhan, works for the welfare of these families. So he recommended we give them loans to deepen wells.

We always look forward to supporting families that work hard; we provided loans of Rs. 30,000 each. The amount helped repair and deepen the wells. The direct impact of this is seen in their crop.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet these families. “What do your dream for the future?” I inquired. “Will think after we pay off the loan!” they responded.

We still want to deepen the lake further and invest in cattle wealth so that we can earn enough hand not to move to Palanpur!

Such humble and god-fearing humans they are. Even their dreams are limited. We are glad to stop the distress migration for eight families.   Mustukhan, you have been instrumental in this shift. We wish Malabhai, Punmabhai, and our other loanees all the best with their future.

 'હું તો પથરા ખાતો તો. આ જુઓ તમે મદદે ન આવ્યા હોત તો હાલેય પથરા જ ખાતો હોત..'

કોઈના મોંઢે આવુ સાંભળીએ તો નવાઈ લાગે ને? મનેય લાગી. માલાભાઈ અમારી મૂંઝવણ સમજ્યા એટલે હસીને કહ્યું, અમારે અહીંયા બારેમાસ કામ ન હોય. ખેતીની જમીન નાની. પાછુ પાણી ચોમાસા પૂરતુ જ મળે. જો બારેમાસ મળે તો ખેતીની ત્રણ સીઝન લઈ શકીએ પણ પાણી નહીં એટલે ચોમાસુ ખેતી પછી પાલનપુર નાહી(જતા) જઈએ. ત્યાંથી અમદાવાદ, સુરત માટે પથ્થરની ગાડીઓ ભરાય એમાં કામ કરીએ. એટલે પથરા ખાતો એમ કહ્યું.

આમ પણ પહાડોમાં ચોમાસુમાં ખુબ વરસાદ પડે પણ ચોમાસા પછી શિયાળો ઉતરતા પાણીની તંગી દેખાવાનું શરૃ થઈ જાય. બોરવેલ બનાવવાના પૈસા આ લોકો પાસે નહીં. એટલે કૂવાગાળી એનાથી ખેતી કરે. પણ કૂવામાંય પથ્થર ઘણા એને ગાળવા ખર્ચ સારો એવો થાય. 

માલાભાઈ, પૂનમાભાઈ ને એમના જેવા બીજા છ મળી કુલ 8 લોકોના કૂવા 10 ફૂટના. જે ચોમાસા પછી ખાલી થઈ જતા. આ પરિવારોના કૂવા ઊંડા થાય તો તેઓ ખેતીની ત્રણે સીઝન લઈ શકે માટે તેમને કૂવા ગાળવા લોન આપવા આ પરિવારોના કલ્યાણનું કામ કરતા મુસ્તુખાને કહ્યું. 

મહેનતકશ લોકોને મદદ કરવી તો ગમે. અમે 30,000ની લોન આપી. જેમાંથી કૂવા ગળાવ્યા ને વરસાદથી સરસ ભરાયા. ખેતી પણ સરસ થઈ રહી છે.

હમણાં આ પરિવારોને મળવા ગયા ત્યારે એમને આગળનું સ્વપ્ન શું છે એ પુછ્યું. એમણે કહ્યું, આ લોન પતે પછી આગળ વિચારીશું. 

થોડી વધારે વાતો કરતા એમણે કહ્યું, હજુ વધારે ઊંડો કૂવો ગાળવો છે. અને પશુપાલન પણ કરવું છે જેથી અહીંયા જ કાયમ રહી શકાય. પાલનપુર નાહવું ના પડે. 

મજાના લોકો.. વધારે લેતાય ડરે. વળી લાંબા સ્વપ્નો પણ નહીં... 

અમને રાજીપો આઠ પરિવારોનું સ્થળાંતર રોકી શક્યાનો... મુસ્તુખાન તમે નિમિત્ત બન્યા. 

બાકી માલાભાઈ અને પૂનમાભાઈ જેવા અમારા લોન ધારકોને સફળ થાવની શુભભાવના...
