Many of us might not resonate with the gravity of the above statement. The families I talk about are ones whose monthly income is 2-3 thousand rupees. So a statement like this would most certainly cheer me up.
Ranjitbhai runs a tea stall on Chanasma crossroads, younger brother Pintoo also aspires to have his independent venture and helps whenever possible.
Both the brothers had been practising their traditional occupation of sharpening knives but as the use of thick metal knives reduced their skills were no longer required, work was hard to find and so was income. Ultimately, both the brothers gave up their occupation and took up jobs at a hotel and snack store in Chanasma.
Our team member Mohanbhai encouraged the duo to start their independent ventures. Ranjit grasped the idea quickly. VSSM offered him an interest-free loan of Rs. 30,000 to set up his tea and snack bar. The income has been good, enough to provide the family two meals daily.
I have had frequent opportunities to meet their mother Taraben. The family used to stay in the shanties around Chanasma. They never had enough water to meet their daily needs. “Now in this rented home we have moved into there is a washroom and access to water from the tap.” Taraben shared with a smile on her face.
The pain of surviving in shanties in the middle of a sprawling urban landscape, bathing around the street corners no place for lavatories!! We will never be able to comprehend the trauma these families undergo. I always pray that no one should undergo the suffering of not having a decent roof over the head.
The interest-free loan has helped this family experience the little joys of life. Their quality of life has improved and that is visible on their face and outfits too.
VSSM has worked hard to ensure the Saraniyaa families of Chanasma obtain residential plots. However, before the got to get the possession of their plots many were required to vacate their shanties. Families who were struggling economically had to stay on the footpath.
While I was talking to Taraben, Mukeshbhai Saraniya passed through, there was a stark difference between the appearance of his and Pintoo-Ranjit’s.
It is the difference economic stability brings. I guess when individuals achieve financial well-being rest of the things do begin to fall in place. They start figuring out things and do not need our hand-holding.
VSSM aims to continue helping the nomadic and marginalised communities, we are grateful to all who have and continue to support our endeavours.
Pintoobhai would often call up to invite me to his tea stall, “Ben, whenever you are passing through Patan and Radhanpur please drop by at my tea stall and taste the tea I make.” I am not an avid tea drinker but at Pintoobhai’s stall, I had enjoyed the cuppa he served with so much affection.

ભાડેથી ઘર રાખવાની વાત આપણા માટે નવી નથી. પણ જે પરિવારની હું વાત કરુ છુ એની તો એક વખતે મહિનાની આવક બે ત્રણ હજાર હતી.. આવામાં પંદરસો ભાડુ ભરીને રહેવાની વાત.. આનંદ આપનારી..
ચાણસ્મા ચોકડી પર રણજીતભાઈએ ચાની હોટલ કરી. પિન્ટુ એમનો ભાઈ એ પણ સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરવા ઈચ્છે પણ એ પણ જરૃર પડે મદદ કરે.
આમ તો બેય ભાઈઓ સરાણિયાનો બાપીકો ધંધો છરી ચપ્પુની ધાર કાઢવાનો જ કરતા પણ હવે જાડા ચપ્પા નથી આવતા તે એની વખતો વખત ઘાક કાઢવી પડે એટલે મળતર ઘટ્યું. આખરે બેય ભાઈઓ ચાણસ્મામાં જ ફરસાણની દુકાને ને ચાની હોટલે નોકરીએ લાગ્યા.
અમારા કાર્યકર મોહનભાઈએ આ બેયને પોતાનો સ્વતંત્ર ધંધો કરવાની સલાહ આપી. રણજીત તૈયાર થયો ને ત્રીસ હજારની અમે લોન આપીને એની હોટલ થઈ. સરસ આવક થાય છે ને બે ટંક સુખેથી ખવાય છે..
તારાબહેન આ બેયની મા.. ઘણી વખત એમને મળવાનું થાય. પહેલાં ચાણસ્મામાં છાપરાં બાંધીને રહેતા આ પરિવારોને પીવા અને વાપરવાના પાણીની ભારે મુશ્કેલી રહેતી. હવે ભાડાના ઘરમાં ટોયલેટ, બાથરૃમ સાથે પાણીની સગવડ છેની વાત હરખાતે હૈયે એમણે કરી..
છાપરાંમાં રહેતા પરિવારો માટે પાણી મેળવવું મહામુસીબત ભર્યું બનતું. વળી શહેરની વચ્ચોવચ.. આવામાં ટોયલેટ માટેની મુશ્કેલી... ખુલ્લામાં નાહવાનું..પાર વગરની પીડા... જેમના માથે પોતાની પાકી છત છે એ ક્યારેય આ પીડામાંથી પસાર નથી થયા. ઈશ્વર કોઈને આવી પીડામાંથી પસાર પણ ન કરે એમ ઈચ્છુ પણ જેમને આ તકલીફો નીત વેઠવાની છે એમની હાલત એમની સાથે બેસીએ ત્યારે સમજાય..
ખેર વગર વ્યાજે લોન રૃપે મદદ કરી એનાથી આ પરિવાર બેઠો થઈ ગયો. કપડેલતે પણ સુખ દેખાવા લાગ્યું..
ચાણસ્મામાં રહેતા સરાણિયા પરિવારોને રહેણાંક અર્થે પ્લોટ મળે એ માટે અમે ભારે જહેમત ઉઠાવી આખરે પ્લોટ ફળવાયા. પણ હજુ કબજો મળે તે પહેલાં જ એ લોકોને છાપરાં ખાલી કરવા પડેલા... ઘણા સરાણિયા જેમની આર્થિક સ્થિતિ નબળી છે તે તો ફૂટપાથ પર પડ્યા છે.
હું તારાબહેન સાથે વાત કરતી એ વખતે જ મુકેશભાઈ સરાણિયા ત્યાંથી પસાર થયા. મને જોઈ એટલે કેમ છો પુછતા સામે આવ્યા, એમના દીદાર અને પિન્ટુ, રણજીતના દીદારમાં જમીન આસમાનનો ફરક હતો..
આ ફરક આવ્યો આર્થિક સદ્ધરતાથી.. દરેક વ્યક્તિ શિક્ષિત અને આર્થિક રીતે સુખી હશે તો મારા ખ્યાલથી એનો વિકાસ એ જાતે કરી લેશે એને કોઈનીયે જરૃર નહીં રહે..
VSSM તરીકે વિચરતા અને વંચિત પરિવારોને મદદ કરવી એ લક્ષ છે.. આ કાર્યમાં મદદ કરનાર સૌ પ્રિયજનોનો અમે આભાર માનીએ છીએ..
પિન્ટુભાઈ ફોન કરીને બેન પાટણ, રાધનપુર મગા આવો તો અમારી હોટલ જોતા જજો એવું કહે, તે હોટલ જોઈ અને ચા ઓછી પીવું છુ પણ આ હોટલની તો પીવી જ પડે...
