“Gulabbhai, Amiben is complaining that you have not been regular with paying your loan instalments, there are many pending instalments!!”
“Ben, I will sell of my camel cart and pay off the loan, please do not worry. I cannot tolerate you facing the brunt of my inadequacy to pay.”
This is Galabbhai Dafer, one of my favourite human beings.
“Ben, it is because of you that we are at peace now.”

“We were never able to live as humans, in the jungles we rushed and survived as the police constantly chased us. We have lived on stolen cattle. Humans don’t live that way, do they?”
“God sent you for us. Life is much better, we are happy now!!”
Gulabbhai, who has immense affection for me becomes emotional while narrating this.

The interest free loan was provided to help Gulabbhai quit all the unlawful activities and settle down to earn a dignified living. Initially the business did well, but as they say the poor are always a stone throw away from misfortune. Gulabbhai had a small tussle with the villagers who in turn destroyed his camel cart. There remained no roof over his head and the family had to leave the village they had stayed in for years. For 8 months the family wandered villages visiting relatives and finding whatever work they could.
During these uncertain times he was unable to pay the scheduled instalments. Nonetheless, he would religiously call me up to regretfully convey his inability to pay the instalment.
It was one of those days when he had called up to convey the same and I asked him to start another business for which new loan will be provided by VSSM!!
For a while there was a long silence as he wasn’t able to believe what he had just heard, “Ben, what if there are new issues?”
“Have trust in Almighty and start afresh, nothing will go wrong!”
Four days later he called up requesting a loan for a Chakda auto. It’s estimated cost is around Rs. 2.25 lakhs. The amount was huge. “Do something that requires small investment,” I retorted.
“Ben, only the Chakda will run. I am sure this will do well.”
“I can’t sanction such huge amount.”
He did not argue but managed part amount from a finance company and Rs. 1.45 lacs from VSSM to buy a Chakda.
Since that day he has not missed a single instalment. Life is back on track. Yes, he still awaits a pucca house and a permanent address though.
He now stays at Danawada in Surendranagar.
I had the opportunity to visit his house recently. It was late afternoon, since I was hungry I asked for some food. “It would have been difficult had you asked me earlier when there was no work. Now I just have return what you have given us. Tell us what would you like to have??” The family fed us generously with lot of affection.
They bring dry fire wood from the woods to make some additional income. Life again looks positive and happy. Yes, a proper roof over the head is a dream they are waiting to turn into reality. “That is all we wish for now!”
I feel all these efforts have been worth it when I meet humans like Gulabbhai. And salute their integrity for these families have never let me down or broken my trust in them.

'ગુલાબભાઈ તમારી લોનનો હપ્તો ચડી ગ્યો છે અમીબેન મને બોલે છે કે ગુલાબભાઈ પૈસા નથી ભરતા.'
'અરે એમ કાંઈ હોય કાલે જ હાંઢિયાગાડી વેચી લોન ભરી દઉ. આમ જુઓ મારા લીધે તમને કોઈ કાંય કઈ જાય એ હાંખી નો લેવાય બેન...'
આવા ગુલાબભાઈ #ડફેર મારા સૌથી વધુ ગમતા વ્યક્તિઓમાંના એક.
'બેન તમે સો ન અમન હવે હખ સે.'
'જંગલમાં રેતા તા પણ અમારા નસીબના માલિકે તમને મેકલ્યા. પેલા તો પોલીસને ભાળતા તો જંગલમાં નાહી જાતા. કાંઈક ઘેટાં બકરાંની ચોરી કરી લેતા ને એના માથે નભતા. માણહ જેવું જીવન જ ક્યાં હતું?
પણ હવે બધીયે વાતનું સુખ છે..'
ગુલાબભાઈ આટલી વાત કરતા #ભાવવિભોર થઈ જાય. મારા માટે પુષ્કળ પ્રેમ.
આડાઅવડા રસ્તા મુકી ધંધે વળગો એમ કહીને એમને ઊંટલારી લેવા માટે વગર વ્યાજે લોન આપી. ધંધો સરસ ચાલ્યો. પણ ગરીબ માણસને દુઃખ શોધવા ક્યાંય જવું ના પડે? ગામ સાથે થોડો ડખો થ્યોને ઊંટલારીને બધુયે તોડી નાખ્યું. માથે છાપરુયે ના રહ્યું. જ્યાં વર્ષોથી રહેતા તે ગામ છોડવું પડ્યું. લગભગ આઠ મહિના તો ગામે ગામ સગાવહાલના ત્યાં રઝળ્યા.
આ દરમિયાન લોનના હપ્તા નહોતા ભરાતા પણ દર મહિને ફોન કરીને બેન આ મહિને હપ્તો નહીં થાય એવું એ કહી દેતા. વળી આટલું બોલતા એમના મનને સખત ભાર લાગતો.
એક દિવસ ફોન આવ્યો ને લોન માટે કાંઈ કહે એ પહેલાં જ મે એમને કહ્યું બીજો ધંધો કરો અમે પૈસા આપીશું.
ઘડીક તો ગુલાબભાઈના માનવામાં જ ના આવ્યું. પણ પછી કહ્યું,
'બેન કાંઈ તકલીફ થશે તો..'
'નહીં થાય તમે ઈશ્વર અલ્લાનું નામ લઈને કરી નાખો..'
ને ચાર દિવસ પછી ગુલાબભાઈએ છકડાં માટે #લોન આપવા કહ્યું. લગભગ સવા બે લાખમાં છકડો આવે. આ રકમ મોટી હતી મે કહ્યું નાનુ કાંઈ કરો ને ભાઈ. પણ એમણે કહ્યું,
'બેન છકડો હાલે એમ સે એ જ લાવવો સે.'
'પણ સવા બે લાખ તો ના આપી શકાય.' એમણે કોઈ જીદ ના કરી. એમણે ફાઈનાન્સમાંથી થોડી લોન લીધીને #VSSM માંથી એકલાખ પીસ્તાલી હજાર રૃપિયા અમે આપ્યા. ને ઘરે છકડો આવ્યો.
ગુલાબભાઈ વ્યવહાર આજ સુધી ચુ્ક્યા નથી. એક હપ્તો પડ્યો નથી.
જો કે હજુ પાક્કુ #સરનામુ મળ્યું નથી. ને છાપરુયે નથી. હાલ #સુરેન્દ્રનગરના દાણાવાડામાં રહે છે. થોડા દિવસ પહેલાં ત્યાં જવાનું થયું.
બપોરનો સમય હતો ગુલાબભાઈને ભુખ લાગી છે જમાડશો એવું કહ્યું તો એમણે કહ્યું, ધંધો નહોતો ત્યારે કીધુ હોત તો કાઠુ થાત પણ હવે તો તમે દીધેલું તમને દેવાનું સે શું ખાશો ક્યો?.. ને હેતથી એમને જમાડ્યું. તમને ફોટોમાં બતાવું છું બાકી રૃબરૃ તો આવવું રહ્યું.
અદભૂત ભાવ. હાલમાં જંગલમાંથી સૂકાં લાકડાં કાપી લાવે ને એ વેચવાનું એ કરે. સુખી થ્યા છે બસ હવે રહેવાનું ક્યાંક થઈ જાય તો ભયોભયો એવો ગુલાબભાઈનો ભાવ...
ગુલાભાઈ જેવા માણસોને મળુ ત્યારે કરેલું લેખે લાગ્યાનો ભાવ થાય..
પણ આ પરિવારોએ મારો ભરોષો નથી તોડ્યો એમની આ લાગણીને પ્રણામ..
ગુલાબભાઈનો છકડો ફોટોમાં જોઈ શકાય છે.
ને ઊંટલારી આપી એ વખતે તેમણે અમારા માટે વ્યક્ત કરેલો ભાવ વિડીયોમાં. સાંભળજો તમનેય ગુલાભાઈ માટે પ્રેમ થઈ જશે એ નક્કી..
