Mittal Patel meets Mituben at her store

 “Ben, Mituben runs cutlery (businesses that sell fashion and kink-knacks are called cutlery stores/business in Gujarati countryside) the business was good, but her husband’s COVID infection and consequent medical expenses has left them with huge debts. The financial condition is so weak that she is incapable of restocking her store and whatever she is left with is not enough to run the store. Can we loan her some money?” VSSM’s Shankarbhai based in Patan’s Radhanpur called up with this request. We approved an interest-free loan of Rs. 30,000 to Mituben.

Mituben restocked her store and business limped back to normal. She paid the loan instalments twice a month. Shankarbhai took me to meet her when I was in Radhanpur recently. It was a joy to hear that a woman from  Devipujak community was so efficient with her business.

“How much did you study, Mituben?”

“I have not even climbed the stairs of the school. It was my husband’s illness that brought me the responsibility of earning for the family. The responsibility has taught me all that I know of the business.”

I was at her store for about 30 minutes, during our conversation she continued to attend to her customers and orally calculate the amount. I was amazed at her skills. It was not education but experiential learnings that had shaped Mituben’s entrepreneurial abilities.

“Once I finish paying off this loan, I want to take another one. I want to make my business thriving as before!” Mituben said as I bid her adieu.

“Of course. But make sure you adopt the practice of regular savings. We would love that even more.” I mentioned before leavening.

'બેન, મીતુબેન કટલરીની દુકાન ચલાવે. પહેલાં ધંધો સારો ચાલતો પણ એમના પતિની માંદગી ને કોરોનાએ એમની કેડ ભાંગી નાખી. આર્થિક હાલત નાજુક દુકાનમાં સામાન ભરાવવા પૈસા નથી ને જે છે એમાંથી કાંઈ સરખો ધંધો થાય નહીં તે આપણે એમને લોન ન આપી શકીએ?'

પાટણના રાધનપુરના અમારા કાર્યકર શંકરભાઈએ આ વાત કહીને અમે મીતુબેનને 30,000 વગર વ્યાજે આપ્યા. 

મીતુબહેન સામાન લાવ્યા ને ધંધો પાછો પાટે ચડ્યો. એક જ મહિનામાં એ બે વાર લોનનો હપ્તો આપી ગયા. હું રાધનપુર ગઈ એ વખતે શંકરભાઈ મને મીતુબહેન પાસે ખાસ લઈ ગયા. 

દેવીપૂજક સમુદાયની બહેન આવો સરસ વ્યવસાય વિકસાવે એ વાત જ આનંદદાયક હતી. 

'કેટલું ભણ્યા મીતુબહેન?''હું તો નિશાળનું એકેય પગથિયું નથી ચડી. પણ મારા ઘરવાળાને લાંબી માંદગી આવી ને મારા માથે જવાબદારી આવી. બસ એ જવાબદારી એ બધુ શીખવી દીધું'

એમની દુકાનમાં હું અડધો કલાક ઊભી રહી. એ દરમ્યાન એમણે ઘણી વાતો કરી સાથે ગ્રાહકોને પણ સાચવ્યા ને સૌથી અગત્યનું હિસાબ તો આંગળીના વેઢે કરે..

ભણતરનેય ચડે એવું ગણતર મીતુબહેનમાં હતું. હું વિદાય લઈ રહી હતી ત્યાં એમણે કહ્યું, 'આ લોન ઝટ પતાવી મારે બીજી લેવાની છે હો.. મારે દુકાન પહેલાં જેવી ધમધમતી કરવી છે..'

વ્યવસાયની હોંશ હોય એને તો મદદ કરવાની જ હોય તમે આ લોન પતાવો ને સાથે નાનેરી બચતેય કરજો તો બીજી લોન ચોક્કસ આપીશું કહીને અમે ત્યાંથી નીકળ્યા.

મીતુબહેન જેવા 4000 લોકોને અમે લોન થકી તેમનો ધંધો વિકસાવવા મદદ કરી રહ્યા છીએ અને આ બધુ સંસ્થા સાથે સંકળાયેલા પ્રિયજનોની મદદ વગર શક્ય નથી. આપ સૌનો આભાર...ને અમને નિમિત્તનો આનંદ...
