Rameshbhai with his vegetable cart

Rameshbhai and Manjuben are an extremely hard working couple from Diyodar. Rameshbhai works as a daily wage earning manual labour while Manjuben, with a basket mounted on her head, sets out everyday to sell vegetables.  The couple’s two elder daughters are married, staying with their husbands while the younger sons are studying. The main bread winner of the family is Manjuben because finding work everyday isn’t possible for Rameshbhai. The house practical runs on the income of Manjuben, saving money for rainy days was an impossible task for this family.

The family always remained short of even meeting the basic needs hence Rameshbhai  had a strong urge to  change his livelihood, he contemplated  having  a hand cart to sell vegetables,  but with no savings and income that was barely sufficient buying a hand cart was an impossible task.

Rameshbhai stays in a makeshift dwelling on a government land, since his name features in BPL list VSSM’s Naran has been striving hard to ensure Rameshbhai is allotted a residential plot. Naran remains  in close contact with families like Rameshbhai. They meet often to discuss the progress on their various applications and future directions. Rameshbhai knew about VSSM’s initiative of supporting nomadic individuals to start their own enterprise. He mentioned his intent to Naranbhai. “My wife sells vegetables and I also have a knack of selling vegetables. If VSSM supports us in purchasing a hand cart, two of us can do separate business and soon improve the economic condition of our family,” he suggested.

Vicharta Samuday Samarthan Manch - VSSM provided a loan of Rs. 5500 to which Rameshbhai also added a small amount. He bought a hand cart and now moves to various locality of Diyodar selling vegetables whereas Manjuben sells vegetables in the main market. The couple is working hard and earning well. They have moved to stay in a rented house now and are managing to save some amount as well. The EMIs to VSSM are also nearing completion.
