One of the numerous ways the nomads function..

Karshanbhai Mir at the settlemet…
Karshanbhai’s wife developed some major illness and to pay the medical expenses he needed immediate funds. It was this medical emergency that required Karshanbhai Mir to borrow money from a local moneylender. Unaware of the interest such private money lenders charge he took the loan, it was only once he began paying the installments he realized the tricky situation he had stepped into.

VSSM’s Naran recommended a loan of Rs. 50,000 for Karshanbhai. I chanced to meet him during one of my field trip to Diyodar. Dressed in a shabby dhoti, an old previously owned coat that he must have bought from the sidewalk seller and tethered head gear that he always wears, Karshanbhai came across as a very dignified person.

“So what if you can’t repay the loan amount? What if you approach the private money lender again” I inquired.

“Ben, only an insane person can repeat such mistake, I can’t understand why I did not reach-out for you earlier. Yes we do not remember date, day and months but we are committed to return each penny we borrow from you,” he replied.

This is how our nomadic families work, you have to set the calendar in terms of days..1 day, 10 days, 30 days… and they shall never miss on that….

There honesty and love is enough to keep us going…….

Inculcating the habit of regular savings amongst the nomadic communities….

Jivabhai Marwadi Devipujak with his wife
“Ben, I have understood the importance regular savings only after the organization (VSSM) provided me the financial assistance and compelled me to begin saving on regular basis. Today I have jewelry worth Rs. 17,000 and Rs. 15,000 in cash,” said a cheerful Jivabhai.

Jivabhai Marwadi Devipujak  availed a loan of Rs. 10,000 from VSSM to begin a business of trading seasonal products. A scrape collector, Jivabhai followed a daily routine of first collecting the scrape and then selling it to the wholesale scrape dealer. But, this method did not allow him to negotiate better  selling price. However, once when he accumulated the scrape and sold it in bulk he could fetch better price. After this learning he took a bigger loan of Rs. 40,000 from VSSM.

VSSM’s Kanubhai thought him how conduct his business smartly and made sure he saved from the profits he made. Jivabhai never liked going to a bank but the fear of Kanubhai’s scolding made him visit the bank to deposit part of his profits. The figure has now reached Rs. 15,000. For nomadic families, even such a small amount is huge and the joy it brings in the lives of these individuals is incomparable.

The poor of our country look up to the government for support and hopes that the support will help them tackle poverty. It is not an unreasonable expectation, communities reeling under abject poverty require external support to break free from the clutches of poverty. But, the confidence people like Jivabhai gain after becoming successful in business makes them aspire to do away with government support.

“It will be good if I can get government support but the pace at which my business is going these days makes me believe that in next five years I will buy a house of my own.” In the past one and half years Jivabhai has managed to save the above-mentioned amount and send his children to a decent private school aswell.

We feel humbled when VSSM becomes instrumental in bringing such confidence in the lives of people like Jivabhai. Thank you all for helping us support thousands of individuals like Jivabhai.

Bhikhabhai Vansvadi chooses to dream big….

Bhikhabhai Vansvadi with his pickup dalu
“Ben, I want to buy a pickup-dalu (personal vehicle in the nomadic dialect). Will you give me a loan?”

“But buying such a big vehicle requires lot of money and VSSM does not give big loans. Think of some other smaller vehicle!”

This was the conversation I had with Bhikhabhai Vansvadi, a resident of Tadav village. The required loan amount was huge and since I had not approved it this conversation also  slipped out of my mind. Two months later Bhikhabhai calls up again…

“Ben, I have managed to save some money, the auto dealer also offers a loan, please lend me Rs. 50,000 and I shall be able to buy the pickup dalu. I am confident, the business will grow because of the vehicle and my earning will increase substantially. You please  do not worry about the repayment of loan, I will repay each penny of the amount borrowed.”

“It is not the loan I am worried about, I have complete faith in you, it is just that I don’t want you to incur so much debt!!”

“You are right, Ben!! But you have taught us to dream, so let me dream… trust me I will not fail!!”

There was nothing left for me to say to talk convince him further!! VSSM sanctioned a Rs. 50,000 loan to Bhikhabhai. He uses his vehicle to sell plastic houseware. The business is doing extremely well and he is repaying the installments on time.

I am glad Bhikhabhai chose to not just dream but dream big. A little prayer slips for him though, may the divine also help him live his dream…..

VSSM is trying to make co-operative society of broom-makers vadi...

Meeting under progress with vadi community
We recently had a meeting with the Vadi families engaged in making broom sticks. They stay in dangaas located around Ahmedabad. It is their skill of making brooms that helps them sustain their families since the manual labor jobs aren’t paying enough. These families face issues very similar to the other nomadic communities, their names do not feature in any BPL list, the villagers are against their permanent settlement etc.. etc..

Also, they do not have access to any support to initiate into other ventures or expand their current business. The meeting was to understand their issues, how can they come together as a cooperative to improve their bargaining capacity!! They aren’t convinced of forming a cooperative but we are hopeful…
