VSSM Support Nomadic Communities for Livelihood - Hameerbhai Vansfoda's story

VSSM supports Hameerbhai Vansfoda’s new venture of selling household plasticware….

Hameerbhai Vansfoda  a skilled bamboo basketmaker cannot afford to make baskets anymore- reason the increasing cost of bamboo is making it difficult for him to source bamboo and keep the prices of his products reasonable….hence he is left with no choice  but to search for alternate means of livelihood. Hameerbhai is a resident of Ludra village of Diyodar block. He stays on the government wasteland.

Like Hameerbhai,  thousands of nomadic families are being forced to reinvent their livelihood options. The changing markets, production techniques, new forest  and  wildlife laws, modern means of entertainment etc have had negative impact on the traditional occupations of these nomadic communities who were so dependent on their inherent skills that they never felt the need to pick any other skills.  In the present times this need to search new vocations is more pressing than ever.

Hameerbhai was familiar with the activities of VSSM, the organisation that facilitated the process of his Antoday ration card and ensured that his name entered the BPL list. Hameerbhai desired to start his own business of selling plastic buckets, tubs, baskets, stools and other household plasticware. But the venture required capital investment that he did not have. He proposed for a loan to VSSM. A loan of Rs. 30,000 was granted by VSSM and Rs. 15,000 Hameerbhai borrowed from his friend. With the money he bought enough plasticware to be sold by the husband-wife duo. They began with selling the good around Diyodar and later expanded their area to Himmatnagar and Vijapur. The sells are brisk and profit is good compare to the bamboo products.  The couple is really working hard to change its fate. Their elder son and his wife look after the rest of their children who are studying in Ludra village.

The Vicharta Samudaay Samarthan Manch – VSSM team has also eased out Hameerbhai's tension of paying instalments. Earlier Hameerbhai had to come all the way to Diyodar to pay his instalment but Naranbhai worked out an option that he either directly deposits the amount in VSSM account which he refused as it wasn’t a comfortable option for him or every month  he gives the amount to VSSM’s Vijapur team member Tohid, the option that has worked out fine.

Livelihood Generation Opportunities for Bajaniya - Nomadic Family by VSSM

Desired livelihood means altered  lives for good….

A VSSM Initiative in the direction of making selfreliant the Nomadic families
If Bachubhai Bajaniya had his way all he would do is  immerse himself in a business of selling cosmetics and imitation jewellery. But with severe lack of funds that was a distant dream. Instead he had earn his living by working as a manual labourer. But whenever he had the opportunity,  meaning  enough money, he would buy some stuff from the town of Patdi and  sell it in his village Vanod and its neighbouring villages. Babubhai’s wife Ragiben too has knack and skill to do business but its difficult of both of them to be in the same job since one was required to earn the daily income.

Vicharta Samudaay Samarthan Manch - VSSM decided to support them with a loan of Rs 10,000. The amount was their revolving fund. With this money Bachubhai brought products and material from wholesale market. It gave them the power to negotiate with the wholesale merchants. Earlier Bachubhai with very limited savings Bachubhai was required to buy goods at retail rate hence making more profit wasn’t possible for him. These days the husband-wife duo sets out in different villages and does brisk sales. The profit is good  and since they  now buy in regular basis the merchants know them and gives them good price.

With the double income they now can manage to save some amount.  Ragiben’s income is deposited in bank which is later used to buy goods and material while Bachubhai income is used to run the household. Now the couple does not need to go and work as manual labour. As Bachubhai says, “ I can understand that if one has no other relevant skills working as manual labour is the only option left, but I have skills to do business and am sure those skills would eventually  make me successful but it is very frustrating when one has to work as a labourer just because he/she has not capital required to do some business, working as a daily wage earner it isn’t possible to save even Rs. 5,000.”

Rs. 10,000 may seem a small amount but for individuals like Bachubhai Bajaniya a Nomadic Tribes it leaves a profound impact and helps drastically change their lives for better.

Bachubhai now dreams of education his youngest son all the way and marry him at a later age deciding not to repeat the mistakes he made with his elder two sons……...

Livelihood Generation for Nomadic Tribes of Gujarat by VSSM

Livelihood for NT
Livelihood Generation for Nomadic Tribes by VSSM
A year and half back Vershibhai Raval of Deesa developed some cardiac complications. The doctors at Lions Hospital where he was hospitalised  advised a Bypass surgery. The financial condition of Vershibhai poor thus affording a bypass surgery was out of question. The expected cost of the surgery was almost 1.5 lacs. VSSM was approached by a community leader for a loan to cover the cost of Vershibhai’s surgery. The community contributed Rs. 50,000 while VSSM lent Rs. 1 lac. Vershibhai’s two sons guaranteed that they will pay back the loan. The surgery was successful and Vershibbhai was on path of recovery. The family repaid the entire loan as well.

All was not all as soon Vershibhai suffered from post operative depression. The restrictions on activities and medication took its toll of his mental wellbeing. He would remain irritated and aggressive all the time. Middle aged Vershibhai had a life ahead of him and such behaviour concerned the family. He  was advised to begin working. Vershibhai earned his living  as an auto rickshaw driver before his illness so he requested VSSM to loan him money to buy a rickshaw. VSSM lent him Rs. 30,000 and rest 1 lac he sourced from a finance company from which he bought a second hand auto rickshaw.

The rickshaw has made Vershibhai busy and his family is relieved. ‘Our medical expenses have drastically reduced. We ask him not to overexert  and take a break in the afternoon but he just does not want to. He earns well and repays the loan from his earning. The family is quite happy with his health now,” said Mahesh, Vershibhai’s son.

‘We were all fed up with his continuous nagging and irritability, but his getting back to work has relieved us all,” confessed Vershibhai’s wife Jebarben….

"Want to save to build a home…."

Hemabhai Meer is a community leader amongst the 25 Meer families staying on the Boda road in Diyodar. An extremely humble and helpful Hemabhai puts the needs of others before his. The Meer families of Boda road work as daily wage earners, they are skilled mud excavators but getting work daily isn’t always possible. When work is scarce they set out to beg. During festivals like Holi these families go house to house singing Holi folk songs in return of which people give them money.

Hemabhai and his wife Pasiben have always worked for the larger good of their community. They are leaders who work for the betterment of their community. They have been instrumental in bringing the children of the community to school, on behalf of the families Hemabhai also makes rounds of various government offices whenever needed. All this engagement hardly gave him time to work to earn living and support his family so the community supported him for working on their behalf. The death of his first wife and the subsequent remarriage had left Hemabhai in a big debt.

Once VSSM began working in the settlement, most of the work was done by VSSM so the community’s need to sustain Hemabhai decreased. Hemabhai struggled to make ends meet but he was to dignified to share his problems with VSSM’s Naranbhai. It was Pasiben  who shared their  issues  with Naranbhai and requested him to find support to help them start their own business. The couple wished to get a camel cart. In rural parts camel carts are hired by farmers to ferry manure, grains etc. Buying a camel cart required substantial amount which the family did not have. VSSM loaned Rs. 30,000 to Hemabhai to buy a camel cart. Hemabhai bought a camel cart with part his and part VSSM’s support. The couple now works really hard and earns a decent amount everyday. They get regular jobs of ferrying manure to the farms. He has already repaid Rs. 15,000 - half  his loan amount.

“ Once I am repay the loan and some remaining previous debt I want to start saving for building my own home,” says an optimistic Hemabhai.

In the picture Hemabhai and Pasiben with their camel cart and their current home….

Becharbhai - working hard to achieve his dream….

Becharbhai Bajaniyaa  resides in Sarwal village of Patan’s Harij town. He earns his living by collecting and selling hair that women shed while combing. The money earned is just about enough to support his family of 5. But what Becharbhai really desires is to increase his income by starting some small business. Option of a small shop to sell snacks and utilities required substantial capital investment and involvement. Giving up the only earning option  of collecting hair for starting the shop wouldn’t be a wise decision for him.  He would  constantly weigh his options…

Becharbhai decided to involve Jadiben his wife who until now was a homemaker, into starting some small home business. He took a loan of Rs. 10,000 from VSSM. Half of that money was used to purchase hair (initially he would exchange them for small stuff like toy, rubber bands etc). Rest of the amount was used to buy tamarind seeds. There is a great demand for tamarind seeds in villages and towns. These seeds are roasted and nibbled upon. He bought the seeds at wholesale rate and repacked them in smaller amount. Small shop owners, hawkers etc. started buying tamarind seeds from him. At the end of the day Jadiben would sell around 20 kgs of seeds. There are some hair collectors who exchange hair for such seeds and so the demand is good. They make a profit of Rs. 6 per kg i.e. Rs. 120 to Rs. 150 daily. The couple takes turns in managing the outlet. They are saving the amount for a bigger shop. All their 3 sons are studding well. The eldest is in 9th grade at one of the VSSM run hostels. He plans to educate his kids all the way so that they have a brighter future.

This Diwali was truly festive for Bharatbhai….

Bhatartbhai Marwari is a resident of Navagaum village in Rajkot. He earns his living by collecting scrap that he sells later. He is a daily wage earner cause not having enough money means he cannot buy enough scrap to make good margin. VSSM has supported Bharatbhai in getting  documents like Voter ID card, Adhar Card, Ration Card. The interaction during this process helped us understand the financial condition of Bharatbhai. He was looking for options to increase his income. In such trades if one has some capital on hand they can buy more scrap, store it and sell it later once enough is collected and prices increase.

Diwali is one festival when people throughly clean their homes, disposing everything that is no more of use to them. During the Diwali of 2014, Bharatbhai decided to collect as much of such scrap as possible. He approached VSSM’s Kanubhai for help, requesting him to find someone who can loan him some money. Chanukah recommended him to VSSM. We decided to lend him Rs. 10,000. It was a timely support. With the money he bought enough scrap an made made profit of Rs. 13,000. He isn’t a daily wage earner now but earns enough money to save regularly. He has opened a bank account where he deposits his savings. His children are also regular with school.

Kanubhai also helped Bharatbhai get a hand cart under  the Manav Garima Scheme (so what if on wheel of this cart is still at the government office).

At this juncture we would like to express our deep gratitude to Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholiya and Shri.  Girishbhai Sherdalal for their support in enabling us to help many others like Bharatbhai increase their earning capacities…..

Initial capital support helps Yakubbhai and Sabirbhai increase their business potential….

Yakubbhai Meer and Sabirbhai Meer are residents of Samakhiyali in Kutchh. The duo are engaged in the occupation of selling brocade and other borders used for enhancing and ornamentation of sarees, blouse, chaniya-choli etc. Surat is a huge market for buying such decorative borders. It offers immense  choice for  both the  type and price of such stuff . Both Yakubbhai and Samirbhai would travel to Surat to buy them. With limited cash on hand the purchase would be very limited of course. With Rs. 2000 in pocket they set out to buy material from Surat, spending almost Rs. 500 on commute, with the balance Rs. 1500 it is difficult to get substantial amount of material.

VSSM got into touch with these families and assisted them in getting their indignity documents. The dialogue also gave us a sense of their economic condition and struggles for earning livelihood. VSSM’s Ishwarbhai and Nareshbhai  taught the children of these Meer families. Yakubbhai and Sabirbhai requested the Baldosts to help the get some financial assistance from VSSM. We helped them with a loan of Rs. 15,000 each.

With the money they bought enough stock from Surat and set out to sell it in the region of Saurashtra, where there is great demand for borders and lace. After a few days they come back to their home town where they resume selling in the main market by renting a hand cart. They are earning well, have opened a bank account are saving for building a home.

Putting their training to an immediate use by constructing their own homes..

The  nomadic communities have been absorbing all the  adversities hurled upon them in a way they have been roughing it out. Their occupations have died down, they don’t have any decent means of earning, they have been greatly neglected by the society and the authorities, they have never been to school, haven’t been able to hone any relevant  skills that can help them make living. While the older generation is not willing to make that shift,  VSSM has taken upon training the current generation so as to equip them with contemporary skills.

In January 2015 we enrolled 12 young men for the communities of Vadee, Vansfoda and Meer,  at a vocational  training centre run by 'Ambuja Foundation' and ‘Sadvichar Parivar’ in Uvarsad. VSSM had to be a hard task master here as the parents weren’t prepared to send their sons away. The trades they are learning are tailoring and masonry. The training will complete on 17th April. 5 men undergoing training are from Dhangadhra settlement where construction of homes is underway. These men are planning to take up construction of their own homes. And we couldn’t ask for anything more.
The training expenses for these trainees has been borne by Ambuja Foundation while Sadvichar Parivar provided them the lodging and VSSM sponsored their food bill during the stay at the centre.

We are determined to prepare the communities to enable them to earn dignified living, it challenging but we are committed to it…...

Pulling out from the clutches of the cycle of poverty……...

Distress migration or the wandering that the nomadic families do to earn their living not only deprives these wanderers of the fundamental facilities to lead even a minimalist life but the lack of financial resources means these families do learn to handle money. Most of them are daily wage earners means what they earn is spend to buy their daily needs. The ever increasing inflation leads to huge gap between their earnings and spendings. VSSM’s livelihood initiative targets to address some of these basic issues.  As  scope of families benefiting from VSSM’s livelihood initiative increases our learning are also increasing. The interaction VSSM team members have with the loanees helps us shape our strategies so as to bring significant  improvement in the economic conditions of these families.

One of the most important aspect of this exercise has been to compel the families to open bank accounts and start saving. The loan from VSSM is helping the families earn better, more income means more money on hand and if these families are not guided to manage their earnings it would be difficult to pull them out from the cycle of poverty-debt-migration……

25 Kangasiya families of Chunarawad in Rajkot are taking baby steps to gaining financial independence. The women of these families earn by selling imitation jewellery, cosmetics, hair accessories and likes. The men in the families are daily wage earners. The women buy stuff from retail merchants in Rajkot and sell them in the villages around their settlement. While its a job involving lot of walking and travelling through the day whereas the earnings at the end of the day are not more than Rs. 100 to 150.   These women do a business of Rs. 1200 to 1500 daily but earn only 100 to 150 as most of the money is the cost towards buying the products. The merchants are also their money lenders who lends them money in times of need with high interest rates (as all private money lenders do). Since they have to repay back it is necessary they keep buying goods from the same merchant even if they were priced higher than others. Exploitation it was but these women had no option. They can buy stuff at wholesale rate but that requires capital to make those initial investments. Which these families do not have.

VSSM had helped these families get their basic citizenry documents and that is how the organisation has remained in touch with them. VSSM’s Kanubhai got a sense of the challenges they faced during the initial  interactions.  First he asked the families to open their bank accounts and assisted them in doing so. One of the preconditions of receiving loan from VSSM was to open a bank account and cultivate the habit of regular saving. The bank officials were non cooperative initially but not  understand their situation and assists them wherever and whenever possible. Than we provided loan of Rs. 15000 to 5 families initially. They bought goods from wholesale market and the returns now are good they have also began transaction with the bank on regular basis, the savings and earnings are good which has instilled a lot of confidence amongst  these families.
Given the economic background of the marginalised nomadic families, trust was hard to come by. But the faith we have put in hundreds of nomadic families is enabling them to create alternate sources of income and realise their potential is bringing a remarkable change in their bargaining capacity, giving them income to fall back on and raising their standard of living.

We are eternally grateful to all our well-wishers who have stood by us in creating this opportunities…
