Rs. 10000 as revolving fund supports Amrutbhai to boost his earnings…..

In the rural Gujarat there exists an occupation of collecting hair that women shed while combing. The shed hair for these rural women was of no value until they understood its value!!! The hair shed by them are collected by men who go and sell them in market. Earlier they hair was collected for free but now most of them exchange it for some goods like hair clips, hair bands, balloons, small toys etc etc. The men collecting the hair are like middlemen and don’t stand to gain much as the earning is just enough to kept kitchen fires burning. Its the merchant that makes the most and calls the shots..

Amratbhai Bajaniya and Haribhai Bajaniya the uncle-nephew duo stay in Jalalabad village of Patan’s Sami block.  These men earn their living by collecting hair, while their family remains stationed in Jalalabad, the duo keeps wandering in nearby villages to return home once a week or so. With limited cash on hand the amount of goods they bought to exchange for hair was not much. Less hair to sell means the merchant calling shots.

VSSM’s Mohanbhai knew the duo so offered them to help with providing a loan of Rs. 10,000. The money is their revolving fund. They have stopped exchanging hair for goods instead they buy hair on cash. The purchase price is Rs. 120 for 100 grams while they sell it at Rs. 190 to 200 for 100 grams. The profit is good and with the cash on hand they can buy more hair and go for selling them after collecting substantial amount meaning the merchant too will weigh it well.  Mohandbhai has cultivated the habit of regular saving. Amratbhai is looking forward to the day when he can own a shop and with regular saving he sure will be able to realise it soon. “ Not having cash on hand is a very difficult situation and I have undergone the difficulties one undergoes when they do not have enough cash on hand, I plan to help other men in my community once I have enough savings.” Such thoughtfulness, it reflects the pain Amratbhai has endured. The loan as revolving fund as equipped him to increase in income.

This time around Suresh finds his footing…..

It is not always that children wish to take the occupations or professions of their parents. They would have their own plans, would want to do something on their own.. all they require is some support and the will to work hard to achieve their goal.  Sureshbhai Raval is a resident Diyodar.  Since he did not want to take up his father’s occupation of farming so he tried his luck with two-three other occupations.  However,  lack of proper education and other vocational skills proved to be a hinderance for him. He failed to find his footing. VSSM as been closely working with these families in Diyodar so we could sense the concern of Somabhai, Suresh’s father. VSSM offered to sent Suresh to  some vocational training institute to help him pick up some relevant occupational skills, but Suresh was not prepared to do so.  After lot of contemplation Suresh finally asked us to support him to buy a hand cart to start his own venture of selling fruits. There was a fear of his giving up this occupation too like he had done previously but since we knew and trusted his father we had to have similar faith in Suresh as well. We are glad to say that Suresh has been able to live put to the trust we have in him. He is earning well  enough to live by himself and regularly pay the EMIs of the loan.

We are grateful to our good samaritans respected Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholia and Shri Gorishbhai Shredalal without  whose support it wouldn’t have been possible to extend support to these numerous individuals earn their living and dignity. The support they provided has enabled us to help 115 families pull out from the cycle of poverty and migration..

Nomads or not, our dreams and goals are the same…...

We continuously write to you about nomadic families working hard to bring about a substantial change in their otherwise tumoultous lives, the desires they are chasing is like everyone else’s - a decent house, education the kids and settling down to live in peace. Who does not chase such dreams?? Each one of us desire the same and strive hard to live our dreams. VSSM’s efforts to create opportunities for the nomadic families to earn their livelihood is enabling these communities to chase their dreams and to a great extent  realise them aswell. The families are earning well, saving for building their homes and to a great extent are learning to manage their money and lives.

The team of VSSM plays a very important role here, they are the facilitators, advisors, moral boosters, hard task masters….. all of these rolled in one. They are the friends, philosophers and guides to these families. As most of the VSSM team members are from nomadic communities they are catalysts of change.

The trailing story is a perfect example of the relation the team member and community member share…..

Mafabhai Devipujak stays in a shanty by the guest house  in Diyodar. He has four sons two of who helped him in earning livelihood and the other two are still in the school. Mafabhai is a community leader, is an active and zealous community member, always prepared to help and be part of the group. Mafabhai and his sons worked as loaders in the main bazaar of Diyodar, but after their marriage his two elder sons decided to part ways and earn for themselves. It was difficult for Mafabhai to do such laborious job all by himself. Finding some other option was all he was left with.

Mafabhai shared his dilemma with VSSM’s Naran, requesting help get him a hand cart allotted from the government during the Garib Kalyan Mela… this however was not possible; since only those featuring in the BPL list benefit from Garib Kalyan since Mafabhai did not feature in the BPL list he could not get any benefit under this scheme. Naran however suggested he could get support from VSSM in form of a loan. Mafabhai will have to repay back the amount in form of regular EMIs. Mafabhai  found this option appealing too. VSSM processed a loan of  Rs. 6000 for Mafabhai. He began selling vegetables to which Naran suggested to start selling only one or tow seasonal vegetables. So Mafabhai switched to that. During the season of potato he would buy potatoes at Rs. 3 from wholesale market and retail them at Rs. 10. The produce on his hand cart would keep changing according to the season. Mafabhai earn Rs. 200 to 250 daily and is able to regularly pay off the EMI too.

So far VSSM has provided loan to 21individuals in Diyodar, the issue they now face is finding Naran to deposit their EMI. Naran is always on the move because of the workload and it is difficult to get hold of him so how do this individuals pay their EMI was a question?? To this they the, selves found a solution. The money is given to Dineshbhai Raval who has a fruit lorry by the Diyodar bust stand and Naran collects from his to deposit in the bank. It is overwhelming to see all of these individuals belonging to different nomadic communities working collectively  to achieve larger goal…..

Meanwhile, Mafabhai has began saving for education his younger sons and building a small house. Chasing his dream…….

The Dafer are determined to move farther from their shady past…..

For decades now the Dafer families have suffered unnecessary police atrocities, the name Dafer attracts police attention and whether they have been part of any crime or not police picks them up subjects them to remands and false confessions. The Dafer were part of the armies before and are know to be a fierce and loyal tribe, past decades have seen them taking up work of guarding the farms and village boundaries. These families are not allowed to stay in the village and hence there Dangas dot the village boundaries. Guarding the boundaries requires them to keep some sticks and earlier they would have some weapon ( which they no longer keep fearing police attention). The instances of police entering the Dangas and taking the Dafer men along and not releasing them are very frequent, this requires the village Sarpanch and other village leaders to go to the police station, give statements and prove innocence.  Most of the Dafer families are to a great extent fed up of such behaviour of police. They are looking for alternates but lack of education and deficiency of any other skills are the major roadblocks for them to jump to other alternates of earning livelihood.

Fakirbhai Dafer stays in Danavada village of Surendranagar’s Muli block. He earns his living by guarding the boundaries, but was determined to find an alternate. He bought a used camel cart, the cart required some maintenance but there was no many to do that. VSSMs Harshadbhai got a sense of this need and recommended VSSM to support Fakirbhai. With the loan of Rs. 10,000 Fakirbhai got his cart repaired.

Fakirbhai no longer works as a boundary guard instead, he ferries sand, manure, grains, fuel wood to the farms. His son Haji also helps him with his work. The earnings are good and life is gradually changing for better…

Fakirbhai has become an inspiration to other families in his Danga, they too are looking for alternates and we are sure with the determination they have change isn’t very far…….

Its a win-win situation for all…..

Jorabhai Raval runs a small tailoring shop in Kuvada village of Banaskatha’s Diyodar block. He could not complete his schooling but he was a skilled tailor. And as skilled tailors are much in demand so was Jorabhai. But his old sewing machined failed to live up to the demand of increasing workload. Jorabhai was in need of a new sewing machine with latest technology. He requested a loan of Rs. 15,000 from VSSM.

“We shall be happy to provide you the loan but in exchange you shall have to teach tailoring to any one person,” conditioned Naran.

“With one condition that the person will continue to be with me for a year, will not leave once he knows tailoring,” was the the condition Jorabhai put forward.

Chelabhai was the person Naran had selected as being handicap he was unable to do anything else to earn living. Naran knew about this and so he sent Chelabhai to learn tailoring from Jorabhai. Naran facilitated the entire exchange.

Chelabhai has now learnt to sew on the new machine Jorabhai bought, he has proved to be such  hardworking student that Jorabhai is willing to share his shop with him. Jorabhai is also willing to teach tailoring to  other nomadic community members for free, but not from the village as he fears competition will kill his business, which is natural and we respect his concern. For now Jorabhai is a happy man the new machine has really improved his productivity. While Naran has began finding new students for Jorabhai ……

In the picture.. Jorabhai working on his new sewing machine  and Chelabhai standing near him…..

Kantibhai, earning fruits of labour…..

Kantibhai Bajaniya sells fruits on a hand cart near the Detroj bus stand. His desire was to have a small shop and start trading fruits to people who are willing to go and sell in their own villages. This however required some start up capital which Kantibhai did not have. He had plans, he is a hard working man but absence of financial resources kept him away from realising his plans. This is a business involving credit exchange thus requiring substantial initial capital, he  had also seen a property he planed to rent and stock fruits but renting required payment of advance deposit,  Kantibhai had limited money on hand so  could not take the plunge.

Kantibhai is a resident of Detroj town in Ahmedabad, his elder son helps him in fruit selling while his younger son is studying in 10th grade. He wants to educate his younger son well. While his elders will take care of the fruit cart he will work on the fruit shop. As a father he wants to ensure his elder son is properly settled.   He is an active VSSM volunteer and knows our work well. He requested VSSM to support him with some start-up capital. VSSM has provided a loan of Rs. 25,000 to him. He has bought the shop and the business is gearing up.

Give us a plase to stand we will move the earth

57 women from various nomadic communities staying in Ahmedabad’s Vatva, Bhaktinagar, Shahwadi,  recently  took tailoring training. The training was conducted with the support of ATIRA and Sadvichar Pariwar. During the training that was spread over a month these women learnt to stitch salwar-kameez and saree blouse. After the training they expressed their desire to acquire loan to buy a sewing machine so that they can do job work from home.
VSSM inquired about the possibilities of getting job-work at home for these women but after meeting up with few companies  we found that the companies  prefer giving job to women who are trained in industrial tailoring because of the amount of work they are able to deliver in stipulated period of time. As we researched more it was found that ‘Calorax Foundation’ based in Maninagar provides industrial training to women. Our trainees made a visit to this institute too. 22 women had expressed their desire to acquire industrial training but took a step back since the distance was too long and expensive for them to commute every day. We have spoke to ‘Calorax Foundation’ about it and they have agreed to work out some way. Once they hone the necessary skills VSSM will support them financially to procure a sewing machine.

Begging of living is not an option anymore for these families...

Bhairavbhai Bharthari, a resident of Diyodar requested VSSM to provide him some startup capital for him to start his venture of selling clothes. ‘Whenever we went to sing lullabies to the new born we were gifted were gifted lot of new clothes. My wife Radha would go to the market and sell off the gifts. The money earned helped us in running the household. With the money you’ll give we shall buy some old  and new clothes from the city and sell them in the neighbouring villages,” said Bhairavbhai.

“But you have never done this kind of work of selling clothes, it was something your wife did,  will you be able to do it??” we inquired.

“I and my wife shall be doing the selling together, if my wife is able to manage it better she will continue doing it I shall find some other business. One thing is for sure though, I wish to work hard and earn living. I do not wish to beg and earn my living.

The Bharthari families earn their living by playing the ektara/Ravanhatta, these families are hosted by those families that have a new born in the house. The Bharthari sing lullabies and bless the newborn!! But with changing times barring few exceptions hardly anyone calls Bharthari families to welcome their newborns, instead they ask these men to wo
rk hard and earn living. This has made the Bharthari each for livelihood options! They are prepared to work hard and make decent living.

Here’s wishing the very best and  may such hard working and determined families find success.

We are grateful to our donors and well-wishers for supporting the cause of creating livelihood options for such marginalised families.

Journey from a helper in a shop to vegetable vendor

Dineshbhai Goswami of Tharad worked at a vegetable shop in Tharad market earning Rs. 150 daily.  He asked for VSSM support to buy a hand cart. With the money he has bought a hand cart for Rs. 5500 He now sells fruits and vegetables and is earning well. He pays back his loan with a monthly installment of Rs 500.

We are thankful to State Bank of India (SBI) and respected Ms. Bhartiben Prajapati. The traditional occupations of most of the nomadic communities have collapsed and it is extremely essential they be given opportunities to realise their potential The support we are getting is helping us achieve the goal of providing alternates to numerous families.

Life takes a refreshing turn for this young couple….

A freak accident has left Merubhai with a lifelong challenge. Almost three years back Merubhai Devipujak from Deesa in Banaskantha had met with an accident. The bones in one of his legs were shattered. The injury required surgery. However after the surgery he could not stand for more than half an hour. With such medical condition earning a living for the family became difficult. His wife Sita stepped out of home to earn for the family. In the meantime the couple gave birth to a son,  Mukesh. Sitaben also has a medical condition. She suffers from epilepsy. Once while cooking for the family Sitaben suffered a  convulsion and fell on burring stove. She suffered serious burns from neck to waist. Working to earn living was just not possible for Sitaben, now.  She took up begging  while Merubhai stayed back to take care of young Mukesh.

VSSM happened to know about this family during a meeting with the community members at the settlement a few months ago. The medical conditions of both the earning members of the family had left them reeling under sever poverty. It was cold and the family did not have sufficient clothing to protect themselves from the chill.

VSSM proposed to support him to start his own small kiosk. Instead of begging this certainly was a good option. Initially Merubhai rented a hand card and began selling potatoes and onions. On his request a shopkeeper permitted him to park the cart in front of his shop. The earning was good and he was gradually picking up  business skills.  Merubhai asked for a loan from VSSM. On receiving  Rs.  5500  loan Merubhai bought his own cart. He has now started selling fresh vegetables took and the earning is also good. He makes a profit of Rs. 150 daily from which he repays the loan with an EMI of Rs. 500.

We are grateful to our supporters who have helped us spread joy in lives of Sitaben, Merubhai and little Mukesh.

we just want to work very hard with honesty…….

Bharthari  Chamnbhai and Kalubhai earned their living by singing bhajans and folk songs and playing the traditional instrument Ravanhatta. Their lives were filled with constant wanderings where managing a single square  meal for the family was impossible most of the times.  Their sons Ramabhai and Amratbhai were witness to this daily struggle. The families stayed in Sutharnesdi village of Bhabhar block since last 10 years but the villagers were unwilling to allow them to settle permanently in the village. Acquiring documents like voter ID card, ration card etc became possible after a lot of effort. Staying in the Danga/settlement the families face constant harassment from the police who were in always watching out  for a chance to arrest them and confess to the crimes they have not committed.  VSSM’s presence have saved them many a times. Making us ask the crucial question what if we were not present??

Inspite of hailing from Bharthari community both Ramabhai and Amratbhai were not blessed with a voice that could sing so earning a living by singing bhajans was not possible, both earned their living by working as manual labourers doing petty jobs. Life continued to be a struggle. How will we survive, will our children have the same life as us, will they face the same hardships ???? were the questions that always budged them.. from labour they turned to collecting hair ( in village and towns individuals go door to door and collect the hair that we shed while combing) in exchange of some jewellery, hair clips, rubber bands, small toys, balloons etc.  The hair are later sold. The earning was better than labour but they had to walk all he time.

Naranbhai, our team member was witness to their hardships he suggested them to bring different shaped balloons so that the kids will get interested in the process and told them that VSSM will give them loan to buy a bicycle so that they can cover more villages in a single day. Since they had no bank account they were worried, we tried to get their accounts opened but they had no money that is required to open the account. So VSSM mended its rules for lending money for these to very hard working individuals and gave them cash loan to buy bicycles.

It has been two months since they started doing their business on cycles, they can now cover three villages and the earning has increased. They earning goes to Rs. 250 to 300 per day. They are absolutely punctual in paying the instalments, most of the time they pay their instalments before time.

'We want to work very hard with honesty and give a bright future to our kids,’ is what they are telling Naranbhai.

'What are your plans ,  what are your dreams?’  Naranbhai asked them.

they just had  smile on their faces, smiles that spoke a thousand words…...

As Vadia moves forward…...

A lot has been written about the on Vadia a village where in prostitution is practised as a traditional occupation. And no one can deny this fact, the families here still need to fall back on prostitution as there is absence of other options of earning livelihood. This precisely was the reason why almost six decades ago few women of this village had taken up this trade to meet the needs of their family. Later as time went by pimps entered this village and the trade. For them money was of utmost import ace and hence a practice that was taken up voluntarily began to be forced upon small and young girls of this village. The men in the families rather than working to earn living enjoyed the incomes the women fetched. The families also began to fall prey of the debt traps that the pimps strategically weaved around them. The victim families have had no option but to push their daughters/sisters in to prostitution.

VSSM has been working in Vadia since 2006. The activities of VSSM in this village influence social, economical, education aspects of the families here. A lot of families have pledged to stop sending the daughters in their families into prostitution. VSSM is striving to pull these families out of the traps of the pimps, it supports families and youth willing to start up their own business so that the women in their families can live a dignified life.
The picture below is of young man who has set up his own kiosk with the funds provided by VSSM.

Soon we shall be owners of these carts…….

Since last couple of months we have been sharing with you stories of individuals who have taken loans from VSSM to initiate their own venture or buy a machine that increases their potential of earning more. Today we share with you a similar story of three other individuals.

100 families of Vedva Devipujak and Marwari Devipujak communities stay in a settlement in Surendranagar’s Dudhrej town. Most of these families earn their living by working a manual labourers. 27 of these families earn their living by ferrying goods  on a hand cart. The hand carts are rented. Everyday these families rent hand carts from the Mehta Market of Surendranagar at the cost of 20 per day. Individuals live Kalubhai have been renting such carts since last 10 years. ( So far Kalubhai must have paid rent enough to own his own hand cart shop) . A year back 7 families were given hand carts under the Manav Garima Scheme, the rest have been left out.
Harshadbhai, a team member of VSSM explained the math to the individuals who had been renting carts. 'With a monthly EMI of 600 you can own a cart in 1.5 year,’ he told them. Harshadbhai requested VSSM to support these families and since we knew Kalubhai Devipujak, Sureshbhai Devipujak and Ratabhai Devipujak we agreed to support them with a loan of Rs. 9000/-

It has been more than 2 months since these individuals  bought their own carts. The income has been fair enough, they pay a monthly instalment of Rs. 500. Two instalments are already paid. The most important part is they do not have to depend on others,  there are no fixed hours of returning the carts so if the season is good they push the cart for long hours. There used to be a lot of conditions attached with the rentals which apply no more. Kalubhai is a happy man, ‘ we are glad Harshadbhai explained us and came too our support, there were time when we wanted to work more but we were at the mercy of the cart owners  now we are our own boss and with a monthly instalment of R. 600 we will soon be owners of our carts!!’

Others from the settlement have also approached VSSM for support  ad we intend to provide them with the loan soon.
We are thankful to Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholiya and Girishbhai Sherdalal for enabling us to provide interest free capital to such nomadic families.

Now my son is hardly at home……...

Widowed at a young age Jiviben Bajaniya from Diyodar has single handedly  raised three sons with her grit and determination. She sold cosmetics to earn living. When her two elder sons were old enough to start working she sent them to work at the main bazar of Diyodar. In 2013 when Jiviben came into contact with VSSM she requested for a loan to buy a hand cart for her son, which she did from the support VSSM provided. Munno, her elder son began trading fruits in exchange on scrape from the neighbouring villages. The collected scrape was later sold in the market.

For Jiviben the  need to settle her son was of utmost importance, ‘he got addicted to alcohol while working at the bazar. I got him married but soon his wife died of some unexplained illness, his habit of consuming alcohol increased tremendously. He stopped working, if I sent him to work he would come back home after i left for work. I had no option but to request you to help me,’ said a rather sad Jiviben. ‘While giving him the hand cart I  told Munna to involve himself in work so that he can get out of the pain and addictions and the more he will work the more he will earn,  he does not want to work for someone else, but he can work for himself, this would be his business.  I asked him to get up and get going do not sit and waste your life..’ continued Jiviben on her very honest advice to her son.

‘You know, Munna has listened to me and is on the correct path now,’ she says with a sparkle in her eyes.

Naranbhai, one of our team members visited Jiviben’s house to see how is the family doing after they bought the hand cart. Infact  he visited them a couple of times but all the time he could only meet  Jiviben and not Munna whereas he wanted to speak to Munna about his experiences in the new trade.  ‘ Why don’t I get to see Munna??’ asked Naranbhai.

Jiviben replied with a glee in voice, ‘ Naranbhai, when we  labour for someone the wage is fixed, but here the amount of money earned depends on the efforts we have put in, so Munna is hardly found at home.’

‘But I want to take his picture with the hand cart’ said Naranbhai.

‘Then you will have to find him because he leaves very early and comes back late in the evening.’ Jiviben replied.

One day on his way to a settlement  Naranbhai happened to cross Munna, they talked and Munna seemed to be happy with his new found passion.

So that the need to extend my hand does not arise in future……..

Kamuben Raval is a resident of an interior village named Odhav of Ahmedabad’s Detroj block. She has three sons, two of whom work as manual labourers in town of Kadi and  earn monthly Rs, 2,000 each. Kamuben’s husband also works as manual labourer. Large family and limited income makes it difficult for Kamuben to make ends meet. The responsibility of wedding her boys soon was also hovering around. VSSM’s Jayantibhai is from Odhav village and knew Kamuben well who also happens to be his neighbour. Jayantibhai was also much aware about the thrifty nature of Kamuben who would rather walk the distance  than spend money on short commutations. ‘It saves money had keeps me fit,’ she would say!! Jayantibhai wanted to help her out but was struggling to find alternates.   Odhav being a small village with very few vehicles passing by availability of fresh green vegetable is limited. Hence Jayantibhai suggested Kamuben set up a small roadside stall to hawk vegetables. Infact he had to convince a rather hesitant Kamuben to start this trade. He assured Kamuben to stand by her and provide all the necessary support. VSSM lent her Rs. 10,000 as a start-up capital. With the help of the money Kamuben bought vegetables and set up a road-side hawking stall. The stall has been strategically set-up on the road to the village well. The villagers of Odhav draw their drinking water from a well in the village so it was decided to set up the stall near the temple which falls en-route  the well. In absence of any other such hawkers Kamuben’s vegetable stall soon began doing a brisk business. Kamuben’s  husband purchases the vegetable from the town of Kadi every morning. From 8  to 11 in the morning Kamubne sells her veggies in the village.  At around 1.30 pm she sets them to hawk them in the nearby Odhavpura village and again sets up her stall again in the evening to sell the remaining stock.

With her sheer hard work Kamuben has bought a hand cart within four months of setting up her vegetable stall. She pays an EMI of 800 to VSSM and has also purchased an LIC policy. Says Kamuben, ‘ I still run the household in Rs. 4000 as I did earlier. The money I earn from my vegetable vending goes into our savings so that in future we do not have to ask for money from someone.’

We are sure once the nomadic families start saving and planning their future a lot of their current issues will be resolved. All they need for now is the support to help the out of their current financial woes.

We are thankful to Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholiya and Girishbhai Sherdalal for enabling us to provide interest free capital to such nomadic families.

Fabrication is my passion…..

Babubhai Bajaniya is a resident of Detroj village of Ahmedabad District. He makes a daily commute to Kadi town to work in a fabrication workshop as a skilled workman. The everyday commute and indefinite working hours took a toll on his health. He was advised to stay home and take adequate bed rest. The bed rest of 4 months made him jobless as well. With no other job on hand he began working on daily basis as fitter for tin shades. It was not a fixed job and working as a fabricator all his life, he was too good at it so this was not  something he enjoyed  doing. He loved his earlier job. Fed up with the uncertainties of searching of work everyday he decided to set up his own fabrication unit. But how to go about it,  an enterprise requires funds?? This ain’t some kind of work that could be done on a road side!!  Such a unit requires a proper shop, three phase power supply! What to do was the big question he faced.

Detroj was soon going to be a town place and people knew Babubhai well, they wished he start a workshop in Detroj itself. If a fabrication workshop came up in Detroj it  had  the potential of doing good business.  The only issue was of the start up capital. Babubhai  a dedicated community leader,  is an active VSSM volunteer, always present when needed. He shared his concern to VSSM’s Jayantibhai, asking him to inquire if any bank would loan him some funds. Jayantibhai conveyed to him that VSSM will support his endeavour,  asked him to go ahead with his plan.

Babubhai eyed a shop situated on the outskirts of Detroj on the Ahmedabad-Bechraji road. Babubhai approached Kantubha Jhala the owner of the shop with the proposal to rent it.

‘How much is the investment?’ inquired Kantubha.

’30,000’  Babubhai replied.

‘ Would that be enough? Fabrication unit requires lot more!! continued Kantubha.

‘Yes, I know. I do not have funds, organisation is helping be with Rs. 25,000 the rest 5,000 I shall manage.’ said Babubhai

‘ Partner with me, I shall invest some money, I already have a shop.’ proposed Kantubha.

Babubhai was quick to accept the proposal. It was decided that the rent will go Kantubha, Babubhai will take Rs. 9000, the salary of a skilled worker and the profit shall be equally shared between both.

Today Babubhai, apart from the monthly fixed salary of Rs. 9,000 takes home Rs 10,000 to 12,000 a month.

He also supports the other nomadic family who are in need of small loans. ‘I am unable to give my  time but since I earn well the  least I can do is give money. Its my responsibility  towards others.'

We are thankful to Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholiya and Girishbhai Sherdalal for enabling us to provide interest free capital to such nomadic families.

I want to provide good education to my daughter, wish to start a saree shop now…….

Since the last few years  VSSM has been actively working with he nomadic communities of Kamod village in Ahmedabad’s Daskroi block. Sharmilaben and her husband live in Kamod along with their small daughter. The husband works in a factory but their economic condition quite poor. It is difficult to run the household and give their daughter decent education with just the husband’s earnings. What to do, how to increase the family income?? Sharmilaben spoke to Ilaben, VSSM’s team member in Kamod. She asked her if VSSM can loan her some money to start a small venture. Since Sharmilaben did not being to a nomadic community Ilaben refused her right away. A rather dejected Sharmilaben remained persistent in her request.' Why can’t you give us, we are poor and needy, we will be repaying the money  soon, trust me……’ she kept insisting. Finally Ilaben brought her to VSSM office for a meeting.

Sharmilaben Jiteshbhai Vasava dreams of educating her daughter well. To realize her dream she needs to earn aswell and share her husband’s responsibility of earning.

'How much loan do you want?'

’10,000’

‘what do you plan to do with that money?’

‘start selling sarees from home’

‘do you know how to sell’

‘i will manage, i can’t go out to earn because there is no one to take care of my daughter’

We gave her the loan. Its been five months ands has already repaid Rs. 5000. When the daughter goes to school she sets out to sell sarees in neighbouring villages of Piranha, Oad, Saijpur, Piplaj……she has also acquired the skills of selling sprees and makes good profit.

‘How’s business ?’ we asked.

‘I earn as much as my husband now..’ she replied with a smile.

Sharmilaben now wants to start a saree shop. She plans to repay the entire loan in one go and take another loan of bigger value. We are glad that its turning out to be good for her…..

We are thankful to Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholiya and Girishbhai Sherdalal for enabling us to provide interest free capital to such nomadic families.

Gomti’s desire to earn and live with dignity fulfilled….

Gomti is the youngest of the three  daughters of Virabhai Gadaliya. Having been  born in Gadaliya community meant she had an inherent skill of making and selling iron  tools and vessels. Gomti got married and widowed at a very young age. Later she went on to marry again but was soon divorced because of disputes with her husband. After the divorce she came back to stay with her parents. Her father worked as labour in  a business that sold iron tools. The money he earned was just enough to feed the family. But, two months back Virabhai lost his battle against cancer.  She is left all alone and wishes to work and earn rather than beg and survive. She wished to make living from the skill she has inherited.  But to start up an own venture required funds and not just the skills!!!  The difficult question she faced was in absence of required documents which bank would support her.  Hence, she  approached VSSM to help her set up a unit for selling iron vessels and tools. VSSM provided her with a loan of Rs. 10,000 with which she has purchased material and sells it at the bazaar in Diyodar. The earning is enough to keep her happy.  VSSM feels privileged to be able to support such strong willed women and enable them to lead their life with head held up high…
We are thankful to Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholiya and Girishbhai Sherdalal for enabling us to provide interest free capital to such nomadic families.

VSSM, our Guarding Angel

Sonabhai Meer and his family stay in the Meer settlement of Diyodar. The Meers were traditionally engaged in playing ‘dafli’ a drum like musical instrument, the wealthy  families would invite them to play dafli on special occasions. However with changing times these families play dafli during Holi only and earn whatever little is possible. For the rest of the year earn their living through labour intensive jobs. Sonabhai works as mud excavation labourer for foundations of buildings. It is an extremely labours work which is difficult to be done on daily basis. If Sonabhai does not work it becomes difficult to feed the family. Sonabhai spoke to VSSM team member Naranbhai, ‘ I want to start my own business, but do not know what can it be?’ Naranbhai gave it a thought. He realised that the settlement where Sonabhai lives has no shop that sells provisions or other daily need stuff. Why not have a small shop in the settlement?? thought Naranbhai.. He spoke to Sonabhai about it… but there was some resistance from Sonabhai, what if no one buys from my shop..( envy of fellow settlers would be the reason) Naranbhai spoke to the community members in the settlement. All agreed that along with Naranbhai they all also would stand to gain. All unanimously agreed that it was  nice thought that needed to be implemented.

VSSM provided a loan of Rs. 25,000 to Sonabhai. He got a kiosk built and bought goods from the money. The business has been good and Sonabhai is a happy man. He plans to start selling groceries and vegetables from his kiosk.

VSSM remains in constant contact with the individuals it had supported to start-up their own business. We inquire if any further  support or assistance they require from us. Almost a fortnight after Sonabhai started his own venture we called him up to ask if there was any further assistance he requires. ‘The business is good, what else is to worry about when we have our organisation looking upon us a mother would for its child!!’ was his extremely heartwarming reply. All of those who are associated with this kind of work will understand how gratifying such reply can be ……….

We are thankful to Shri. Rameshbhai Kacholiya and Girishbhai Sherdalal for enabling us to provide interest free capital to such nomadic families.
