VSSM supports Ramilaben Devipujak to build a shop to supplement her income...

Ramilaben devipujak with the newly constructed shop.

Ramilaben Devipujak was just 30 years old when all of a sudden she lost her husband. The couple has a son named Arun.  Saddened by the daughter’s fate Ramilaben’s father brought her back from her in-law’s home. The support she received from her father and brother helped Ramilaben rebuild her life once again. She decided not to remarry and single handily raise her son. Just like her father and brother she also bought a hand-cart and began selling fresh vegetables. The income has been good allowing Ramilaben to lead a dignified life. Ramilaben’s concerned father gifted her a small piece of land so that she has something to lean on, in case things in her life went south!! It’s a very small piece of land just enough to build a small kiosk or a shop and that exactly what she planned to do. After the construction of the kiosk she plans to rent it to supplement her income. However, the construction cost is something that is worrying her as she does not have enough reserves nor does she intend to ask for anymore help from her father.

Ramilaben was aware of VSSM’s activities in the region and its interest free loan program.  She approached VSSM’s team member Mahesh and requested for a loan of Rs. 40,000. Mahesh understood her situation and her plan to rent the premises. On being asked why she would want to rent it and not use it for herself, Ramilaben had an answer that quick and well thought of, “My business is very well settled, I would stand to lose around 2000 to 4000 if I give up my vegetable vending business. The income from the rent will supplement my income and I’ll have a small property for my son, we also have an option, just in case in future if he might want to use it to start his own business!!”

The Devipujak community is believed to be extremely enterprising and blessed with a very sharp business acumen, Ramilaben’s vision and plans for a secured future proved the popular belief for this community. The construction work has completed and Ramilaben is regular in paying the monthly instalment of Rs. 4000 as she intends to be debt free as soon as possible...

Interest free loans of VSSM helps karashanbhai Saranaiya to get more profit in Broom selling business

Karashanbhai saraniya with his broom selling business
“Ben, the business of main and selling brooms is doing well, the problem however our inability to reach out to the market elsewhere. You gave us loan for the business and the business has flourished but give us loan for purchasing a vehicle  so that we can manage to reach to distant markets!!” said Karshankaka who after all these years in Rapar, Kutchh has now settled in Ahmedabad’s Odhav suburb.

Doing well in life, having a decent home, visualising children studying all the way and doing well in life aren’t the desires the nomads cling to, infant they hardly dream for anything. When asked, “If God was to grant you wishes, what is it that you would ask for?”

The reply would be a very long pause, when we would insist on a reply, “ God can give us anything that he wishes is good for us, how would we know what do we want!!” such honest and unassuming folks. So when such individuals  begin to dream and desire for better opportunities and spreading their wings further we feel good, we feel  reassured that at least they will strive to achieve their dreams and it would make our task a bit more easy. In fact we ask them to dream and aspire  for better times.

Sometime ago Karshankaka and two other members form his settlement took a loan from VSSM to buy a  moped. The moped helped them increase their sales, but now they wanted to further expand their reach and wanted a bigger vehicle as the two-wheeler has its own limitations and the number of brooms that can be carried on a two wheeler is much less than a loading rickshaw!! Yes, now Karshankaka and his mates were proposing for a loan to buy a loading rickshaw. They expressed this wish of their’s when they visited our Ahmedabad office during Diwali. They definitely were dreaming bigger, on hearing his proposal I couldn’t curtail my laughter and happiness.

“They are planning to buy two loading rickshaw between four of them, it means we need to extend  loans of Rs. 1 lakh each to these 4 gentlemen. The amount is huge and we not have any guarantors!!” was Amiben’s first reaction. of course her concerns were genuine. But trading such risks has been VSSM’s nature, it is individuals like Karshankaka that need VSSM’s support and we assured Amiben to relax and prepare the documents for extending the required amount to Karshankaka and this friends.

The loan cheques were deposited in their bank accounts they had with Kalupur Cooperative Bank, but under the current circumstances of demonetisation the bank refused to give them cash. “You have to help us get the money soon, with the prevailing conditions it might take two months for us to get the rickshaw!!” they asked us to help speed up the process. Since all of them were illiterate the bank refused to give them cheque book so we got demand-drafts issued and gave it to the company from where the loading-rickshaws were to be purchased. The delivery is expected in two days.

We are glad people like Karshankaka are dreaming big and striving towards fulfilling those dreams, we were so overjoyed with the purchase that it felt like we had bought the rickshaw.

Many a times I get asked, What are VSSM’s vision and mission?? and I tell them that these communities lead a life of dignity and turn up to be  best humans and they take VSSM’s work forward, the way VSSM has helped them realise their dream they too should someday reach out to the individuals in need and support!!!

And I am pretty sure they will take the good work forward!!!

VSSM’s support enables Shanabhai experience financial independence for the first time….

Shanabhai Raval is happy with his new milk
Shanabhai’s father was required to take a loan from friends and relatives to build a house. The economic health of the family was very poor and hence repaying the loan amount required him to engage his physically disabled son Shanabhai into bonded labour. Shanabhai Raval tried very hard to break free from the bondage but remained unsuccessful. He learnt about the activities of VSSM through Paresh, one of our team members who later made a recommendation to VSSM  for a loan to Shanabhai. Based on the recommendation VSSM approved a loan of Rs. 30,000 from with Shanabhai purchased a buffalo and began a business of selling ’s milk. He sells nearly 8 litres of milk everyday and earns about Rs. 200 a day. Earlier Shanabhai was often required to borrow money from his relatives to buy his monthly ration but the support from VSSM has now helped him buy his own ration, pay the loan and make monthly savings as well!!!

“Very soon I will be able to pay off all my debts and break free from the cycle of debt!!” said a cheerful Shanabhai. He couldn’t thank VSSM enough for its concern and support.

Malabhai earned his living by selling Ayurvedic medicines, but his profits began to dwindle with the ever increasing prices of these medicines. The business was no longer profitable to him requiring him to contemplate a change in the products he sold. VSSM’s Ilaben recommended for a loan to Malabhai. With the Rs. 20,000 support that the organisation provided him, Malabhai began selling imitation jewellery, cosmetics and likes. The business now enables him earn Rs. 250-300 daily, he saves Rs. 50 every day  as a working capital that will help him replenish the sold items.

Such items are in demand all the time and hence the sales remain brisk, his wife also sets up a small makeshift stall in front of the house everyday. If VSSM’s had not come to the rescue the couple would have required to put their gold as mortgage.   Malabhai’s daughter works as cook in surrounding houses and his son studies at VSSM operated hostel.

“Life has become a bit less stressful because of the support provided to us by VSSM!!” says Malabhai.

VSSM’s support helps Baluben bhati remain afloat even during medical emergency…

Baluben bavri with her business
Baluben and her family comprising of husband Sanjaybhai and two small children aged 4 and 2 years stay in Bavri settlement of Ahmedabad’s Ramdevnagar area.  The couple earn their living by selling toys, clothes and other everyday items opposite the Ramdevnagar Police station. On recommendation of our team member Madhuben VSSM has extended Baluben a loan of Rs. 30,000. Before VSSM’s support Baluben borrowed money from private money lenders at 10% interest rate. But the support from VSSM has helped her stop dependence on private money lenders who lynch away all earnings with such high interest rates.

With her current earnings Baluben is now able to make a monthly saving of Rs.1500 to 2000.

A recent medical emergency in her family disrupted Baluben’s loan repayment schedule as the medical bills were very high but she remained assured that this was not going to increase the repayment amount as VSSM’s loans are interest free. “If I did not have VSSM by my side I would have needed to go for private loan and wind up my business,” confessed Baluben.

Support from VSSM gives Rajubhai the courage to leave his ill paying job and begin his own venture….

Rajubhai Devipujak worked with a private firm but the salary he earned from his job wasn't enough to support even his small family. He had secretly desired to begin his own small venture but that required funds which he had none. When he learnt about his father doing well after the support from VSSM he too expressed his desire to do something similar. His father made the required recommendation to VSSM’s Ishwarbhai and VSSM extended a loan of Rs. 20,000. With the loan Rajubhai has initiated his business of retailing onions and potatoes. He buys the goods from wholesale market thus taking advantage of low prices. He now earns 350-400 daily and regularly pays of his instalments and saves some amount as well. The future sure looks bright as he plans to extend his business.

VSSM’s support to Bhupatbhai Vansfoda has helped him avoid falling into trap of private money lenders..

Bhupatbhai Vansfoda's daughter and son in law
The 8 Vansfoda families have been living in Morbi’s Beri village for the last 20 years and yet they lacked any identity proofs. No ration card, no Voter ID cards, no Adhar Card nothing at all.  In 2013 VSSM’s Kanubhai came across these families and got to know about their status. He briefed the families with the activities of VSSM and the prerequisite to send the children to school before VSSM begins to support any of the nomadic families. Hence Bhupatbhai decided to send his two children to Doliya Hostel while other families also planned to send their kids to other VSSM operated hostels. VSSM helped these families receive Ration cards, Voter ID cards, Election Cards etc. Two of these families were provided loans that they managed to repay on schedule. Bhupatbhai was aware of this support hence he approached VSSM with a request to provide a loan of Rs. 30,000 to help him meet the expense of his daughter’s wedding. These are not the reasons for which VSSM provides support but if we did not lend the money there is always fear of such families falling into the debt-traps of private money lenders. Hence, VSSM did extend the support and money helped him marry off his daughter with peace and remain stress free at the same time!! He was so humble that he thanked VSSM for its support during the marriage ceremony while his entire community was present…

VSSM helps Shardaben supplement her income..

- the Swavlamban initiative
Shardaben Amrutbhai Bajaniyaa (loan #693) is a resident of Ahmedabad’s Vatva suburb. She stays with her family in Dolivav Settlement along with her son and daughter-in-law. The family earns living working as manual labour. Shardaben works as household help in nearby houses but the income wasn't enough to help her sail through the month. Shardaben learnt about VSSM’s 'Swavlamban' initiative through our team member Madhuben. Surviving with such limited income was becoming taxing for Shardaben hence she applied for a loan of Rs. 30,000. With the amount she has ventured into selling daily need items. Whenever there is a fete around her house she sets up her stall and makes brisk sales. At the same time she continues to work as house-hold help. This was her new venture has helped her supplement her income and make some monthly savings as well.

VSSM help a few more business ventures amongst the nomadic communities...

Mukeshbhai Kangsiya selling imitation jewellery &
Cosmetic products
Mukeshbhai Kangasiya  is a resident of Maninagar area of Bhachau town. VSSM helped him secure his Voter ID card and a job. However, being uneducated meant he was assigned menial labour and such unskilled jobs not fetch good remuneration at the end of the day. The money earned from the job was little while the family was large hence it was difficult to sustain them on such meagre income.

As most of the members of the Kangasiya community do Mukeshbhai’s family was also engaged with selling of imitation jewellery and cosmetic products,  but since Mukeshbhai did not have sufficient cash on hand he could not commence such business. It was VSSM’s Ishwarbahi who recommended Mukeshbhai to VSSM for a Rs. 10,000 loan under its Swavlamban program. The loan served as seed capital to help him initiate into the business of selling imitation jewellery, cosmetics and gift articles. Mukeshbhai has also bought a hand cart and now functions from Bhachau’s main market. The income is enough to help him sustain his family, pay the monthly instalment of Rs. 1000 and make a monthly saving of  Rs. 500.

Dharmabhai Devipujak with his new venture
Similarly, Dharmabhai Devipujak also intended to begin his venture of selling imitation jewellery as his similar initiative on much smaller scale wasn’t rewarding at all. The struggle for him was to mobilise resources to begin the business. In the past VSSM had helped him acquire identity documents. He got in touch with our team member  Ishwarbhai and proposed for a loan of Rs. 10,000 under the Swavlamban program. The money lent by VSSM has helped him procure enough material and begin selling it in Bhacahu bazar as well as neighbouring villages. Dharmabhai’s wife helps him with sales as well. The result has been increase in sale and profits.

The small loans by VSSM are triggering small yet impactful changes in the lives of these and many such  families supported by VSSM. It is providing the family food security and ability to save little that can eventually become their emergency fund.

We are grateful to all those who have played vital role in supporting the Swavlamban initiative….

The recently published story in Gujarat Guardian reflects the contradiction to our popular belief that nomads are corrupt, they are thieves and dacoits….

Recently Published Story in Gujarat Guardian...
Neniben is a very dignified woman. Widowed at the  young age of 25 she was left with the responsibility of single handedly raising her 3 children. “When Jago (her husband) left, I inherited the responsibility of our  3 kids and no roof to shelter the family!!” said Neniben on her financial condition then. Today Neniben has built a house of her own and married off her children well. But somewhere during this time she went through lot of ups and downs.. moments when she felt like ending her life as  she incurred losses in her business. ‘I cannot run away from the people who have lent me money. If I do not repay the money I owe them my conscience will punish me, I will be termed guilty by the one who is watching us from above!! Help me get out of this debt!!” So how does Neniben find her way out??

Nomadic Nat and Bajaniya community benefited to start their own venture with help of VSSM’s interest free loan, under livelihood programme.

Jivabhai with his own auto rickshaw
Champaneriya Jivabhai, resident of Dist. Surendranagar, with limited opportunities & handful resources he has to meet the daily requirements. Income was average while running expense of his hired auto rickshaw was demanding huge portion of whatever he earns, daily rent of Rs.250/-, fuel and other maintenance charges was costing 500/- per day.
Jivabhai had positive prospects to look towards these challenging conditions, he was desirous to make changes in his life by owing an auto rickshaw. But with limited earnings and marginal savings it seems impossible. Eventually he happened to meet our karyakar Harshad.

Harshad is the young and energetic field worker of VSSM. He has given hopes to many young entrepreneurs from these communities.

Harshad explained Jivabhai the benefits of Interest Free loan program especially run for Nomadic communities by VSSM. Jivabhai is desirous and dedicated to take the responsibilities of owing his own auto rickshaw & apparently returning the loan amount within the approved period. VSSM sanctioned a loan amount of Rs.40,000/-.  Jivabhai bought a used auto rickshaw, for 60,000/-, apart from loan amount he received help for balance 20,000/-from friends and family.

Earlier he used to pay 6000/- as monthly rent to the owner of auto rickshaw, today he repays his loan amount to VSSM with fixed 4000/- EMI. Eventually he is benefitted by owning his own auto rickshaw & gradually savings has also increased.

VSSM along with bajaniya community is proud of Jivabhai, he has set an best example of effective management with optimum utilization of handful or marginal resources.

He has given hopes to many young entrepreneurs from these communities.

Families of Nomadic Kangasiya community attained self-reliant under the guidance of VSSM.

Members of these families staying under one roof and
happily doing their buisness under the guidance of VSSM
In the List of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes declared by Gujarat State, out of the 146 communities, Kangsiya is one of them. This community is traditional engaged in wooden & horn made artistic items usually used in artificial jewellery making. These handmade crafts and carving done on these items are durable and long lasting.

Today the demand and supply for these items, both are less, as due to machine made and good finished products available at lesser prices. Families belonging to these communities started selling cosmetic products and artificial jewelleries to support their livings. But to start this venture they required some working capital on hand, buying in bulk from town side market would cost more & initial borrowing at heavy interest drags them into debt trap.

Members of these families staying under one roof and happily doing their business under the guidance of VSSM.

These families today neither have alternate skills or education or funds to venture into other occupations. If one has to work towards the rehabilitation the occupations of these nomadic communities, it is crucial to mentor and guide them towards adapting alternate livelihoods. The best solution was to rebuilding the livelihoods by lending them some funds to start their own ventures.

Five families of this community were funded interest free loan of Rs. 20000/- each during the festival season. Their dedication & understanding helped them to earn more profits and repay the loan timely. Considering their passion and commitments VSSM again funded them with 30,000/- loan to each family. During the monsoon season the condition of their home was dripping day by day they again approached VSSM for repairs of their houses, we granted them 30,000/- interest free loan to rebuild and renovate their house.

Today 85 members of 10 families are staying in this house and all these individuals are making tremendous efforts to make their businesses and lives successful. Under the guidance of VSSM these families have benefited with their independent earnings their own home & importantly relive from debt trap.

Bachubhai Bajaniya with his newly purchased
octopad - performing at a gathering...
Music is passion; musical instruments are gadgets for Bachubhai Nayak Bajaniya living in village Mafatiyapara, Dist. Surendranagar. Since from childhood Bachubhai played his hands on different musical tools, sometimes in community (Bajaniya) gathering sometimes in funfairs & sometimes in family get together. Professional classes are not at easy access for kids staying in remote villages like mafatiyapara, going to city side to attend the classes demands money, economical condition of bachubhai’s family was not sound enough to support his hobby.

His zest for playing an octopad has cultivated by now from hobby to dream, he started playing the instrument along with his musical troop. In social gathering audience applauded his performance. People started recognizing his music, he started getting invites for solo performance.

To own an octapad was not just a dream but a requirement to sustain in this career. Hiring the instrument for each show would cost him a rent of Rs.300-400 and during festival & marriage seasons this rent were at highest. Sometimes he has to let go the show as he would not afford the rent. Non availability of instrument also led to no shows or performance.

These communities were aware of VSSM’s different initiatives for Livelihood. Bachubhai approached Harshad our Karyakar, who is actively working in this village & keen for betterment of Bajaniya community. Bachubhai had some limited savings while the shortfall was huge. Considering his profound desire to take this as his career & oversee the overall growth of this community as this will be benefitted on long run to the society, we sanctioned a loan of Rs.30,000/- under VSSM’s Interest free loan program.

Bachubhai contributed Rs.10,000/- from his savings & bought an used octapad for Rs.40,000/-. Today he is repaying the loan in regular EMI’s, we appreciate his dedication & devotion towards his passion for music and also towards his responsibility to repay the loan amount.

Bachubhai has opened new doors of career and hopes of earnings for this community while VSSM plays an important role to initiate this changing phase of Bajaniya community.

Navghanbhai Kishanbhai Bajaniya, resident of village Laxmipara, Dist. Surendranagar. With limited opportunities & handful resources this family has to meet the daily requirements. Both father and son duo run auto rickshaw on the roads of Laxmipara in shift duties. Income was average while running expense for this vehicle was demanding huge portion of whatever they earn, daily rent of Rs.250/-, fuel and other maintenance charges was costing 500/- per day.

Navghanbhai with his auto rickshaw
An emerging situation aroused when his father got badly addicted to alcohol and could not drive the vehicle. Apparently his earnings stopped and this family was in debt ridden situation.
Navghanbhai is youngest in the family, his prospects to look towards these challenging conditions changes when he meets our Karyakarta, Harshad. Harshad is the young and dynamic field worker of VSSM. He has given hopes to many young entrepreneurs from these communities.

Harshad explained Navghanbhai the benefits of Interest Free loan program especially run for Nomadic communities by VSSM. Navghanbhai is desirous and dedicated to take the responsibilities of owing his own auto rickshaw & apparently returning the loan amount within the approved period. VSSM sanctioned a loan amount of Rs.30,000/-. Navghanbhai bought a used auto rickshaw, and decided to ferry in shifts, his brother also joined him.  Now this vehicle is fully operative, shift duties are set, early morning 4 to 8:30 his father drives, morning 9 to evening 8 Navghanbhai drives & then after till next day morning his brother drives.

His father has not completely quit his habit of drinking alcohol but substantially reduced, he appreciate his sons efforts and dedications and he too has joined them and contribute his share of earnings to their family.

VSSM along with bajaniya community is proud of Navghanbhai, he has set an best example of effective management with optimum utilization of handful or marginal resources.

Similarly Nathabhai Gadaliya sets a best example of age is not barrier if you are dedicated and devoted to deploy your best available resources along with your inherent skills.
Nathabhai’s son owns a small shop of iron made tools generally used as kitchen accessories in the village, buying the material from town side requires adequate working capital, with marginal investments & savings he was unable to procure the items in bulk quantity. Hence compelled to buy at high rates.

Nathabhai Gadaliya selling iron made tools and kitchen
accessories
Earnings from the existing setup was average to meet all basic requirements but not sufficient enough to led a comfortable life. Nathabhai was aware of our livelihood program, he has several times attended the community meetings and has witnessed the growth of other community people who has been benefited with VSSM’s interest free loan program.

He approached for help, our field executive Ishwar was aware of Nathabhai’s zeal to expand his current arrangements. With Rs.30,000/- interest free loan he started buying the raw material in bulk quantity from Rajkot & then after molding and making hand hammers and sledgehammers, a number and variety of chisels, punches and drifts and a selection of tongs with big or jaws of various shapes.
He now started going to nearby village to sell the tools, his wife also willingly joins him and they earns good margin. They also have good setup to sell the tools in Bhachau. Nathabhai gradually returns his loan amount to VSSM in small instalments but in form of regular repayments.

Nathabhai is thankful to VSSM for transforming his life, his belief in us and our distinct programs has remarkably played an role in the lives of needy people.

VSSM helps nomadic communities to start their own vocations with our micro finance – interest free loan program, we are also considerable in the repayments, sometimes repaid at their convenience and availability of money, purpose is to make these poor nomadic people independent & self-reliant.

Marwadi Devipujak brothers Started their own business with Help of VSSM interest free loan program.

Jivabhai and Hirabhai doing their small business
of umbrella selling & their prevailing living condition is
also seen from the photos.
Jivabhai Marwadi belongs to Vaghari community from Rajkot. Family’s living condition economically very tragic, his family earned their living from collecting scraps from homes & selling these items to scrap dealers, such livelihoods barely allow families to have a  daily meal. It was an absolute poverty under which they survive. To buy scrap in bulk from houses, requires some working capital on hand  & Jivabhai was struggling to meet two ends.

VSSM’s Kanubhai used to teach the children in the settlements where Jivabhai lives. Jivabhai shared his stress with Kanubhai. Kanubhai counseled Jivabhai and encouraged him for starting his own small business and referred him for an interest free loan from VSSM’s livelihood program. With a loan of Rs.10,000/- he began his small occupation of scrap trading and gradually his financial conditions started getting better.

Kanubhai made him understand the importance of savings & got opened a bank account for him. Today he is regularly depositing in his savings bank a/c.

His understanding & desire for growth now developed. He again approached VSSM for Rs.30,000/- interest free loan to help him to start a seasonal business. He started selling home decorative items. As its being monsoon season, he sells umbrella near lalbaug area in Rajkot. The positive sign is, he has saved 22,000/- in his bank a/c, till now.

Similarly, Hirabhai Marwadi Vaghari, an elder son in family. Entire  responsibilities lies on his shoulder. His father was bed ridden since long due to ailment  and earning sources were limited. Both husband and wife wandered from places to places to collect scrap. Sheer poverty in family, sometimes difficult to have sufficient meals for two times. However it was difficult for them to find work all the time, they need to keep wandering in search of work. A major earnings was spent on medications. Hirabhai was mentally depressed. A light behind the dark clouds was Kanubhai. Kanubhai came for his help, through VSSM’s help of interest free loan program. Hirabhai started a small business of home decorative items, he bought an old pedal rickshaw. Now moving from place to place was easy. With help of Rs.10,000/- received from VSSM, Hirabhai and his wife’s lives are accelerated & new hopes are emerging. Still today, this couple starts their day with collecting scrap from homes & then after around 10 in the morning they move from places to places in their rickshaw selling house hold & decorative items.

VSSM’s karyakar Kanubhai has also played an important role in the medical treatment of Hirabhai’s father. This family also understood the importance of saving, they have saved Rs.5000/-.

Both of these families are gradually settling down and improving their economic footing. Now they dream of their own house. Application  to avail plot from govt.  has also been done.  If there is no chance to get plot from govt. , these families have decided to buy houses of their own.  Regular  savings are done, they have made resolution not to withdraw the savings under any circumstances.

We are glad to witness such changes in lives of Jivabhai & Hirabhai. May the almighty bless them and fulfill the dream of their own homes.

Families from nomadic communities begin independent businesses after availing loan from VSSM..

Vashrambhai Raval with his loading AutoRickshaw
Vashrambhai Raval is a resident of Banaskantha’s Kankrej. He earned his living through selling vegetables on a camel cart. It allowed him to move two-three villages through the day and sell the vegetables. The income was just enough to meet the household expenses. If the camel fell ill Vashrambhai had to remain home for the day. To escape from such uncertainties he felt the need of buying a lorry rickshaw but finding enough funds remained a challenge.

Since he was aware of the Swavlamban initiative by VSSM he contacted Naranbhai and requested for a loan of Rs. 30,000. On availing the loan he bought a second-hand lorry rickshaw and began selling potatoes, onions, bedsheets, blankets anything that earned him well. The rickshaw enables him to cover 5 villages in a day and the income is good as well.

Vashrambhai has 3 sons and hopes to provide good education to all his children.

Deepakbhai with his Octapad
Deepakbhai Bjanaiya hails from Jaaspur village of Karol block in Gandhinagar. Right from his early childhood Deepakbhai was found of playing musical instruments and with time decided to make a career out of it. He has trained himself in playing Octapad. Over the period he began receiving invitations to play Octapad at various musical gatherings. Deepakbhai needed funds to invest in an Octapad but until that could  that he performed on a hired instrument. But the rental for such instruments are so high that most of all that  Deepakbhai earned was spent on paying the rent. Deepakbhai has some amount  that he had saved over the period of time and required around Rs. 20,000 to buy a brand new Octapad. He applied to VSSM for a loan and from the amount sanctioned he bought a new Octapad. “There were times I had work but did not have the instrument cause someone else had rented it but now I have both, work and instrument.  At times I had to say no to the assignment because I did not have instrument. But now I need not have to worry about finding the instrument and work is easily flowing in and income is good as.” narrated Deepakbhai.

Anitaben with her hand cart
Similarly, Anitaben Bajaniya also approached VSSM with a request for a loan of Rs. 30,000. Anitaben is a resident of Guptanagar in Ahmedabad. Her family of 7 can barely survive on the sole income of her husband, so she decided to work as domestic help in the bunglows located in her neighbourhood. However though she did not prefer working as a household help, she desired to have a venture where she could be her own boss. Like her fellow community members she also wanted to begin her business of selling imitation jewellery, cosmetics etc. Since  saving money from a single income was not possible she did not have necessary capital to invest and  her desires could not take wings.

Anitaben met up with VSSM’s Ilaben with a request for loan. Once the loan was sanctioned she bought a hand-cart and the products to sell from a wholesale market. She began selling selling her products through a daily market near her home in Guptanagar. The income has been very good, along with paying the instalments regularly she is also began saving a small amount in Kalupur Bank.

The Savlamban program has enabled hundreds of such families improve their standard of living. VSSM is extremely thankful to all of you for being instrumental in bringing such change in the lives of these poor families.

VSSM supports Dhanabhai Bajaniya begins his own business venture…

Dhanabhai Bajaniyaa with his new venture….

65 years old Dhanabhai Bajaniya lives in Patan’s Sidhpur village. All these years he earned his living and supported his family through selling cosmetics and immitation jewellery, taking all the items he sold in a small glass carrier. His work required him to move from village to village, sometimes walking  long distances. But as age caught up he found it difficult to walk such long distances. His knees have become very weak and he finds it difficult to sit or squat, something that is much needed in his profession, for long time. As a result of these health issues, his wife and son had to pitch in and earn for the family. Seeing his wife put in all the hard work also pained him a lot. Dhanabhai wished he could be of any help to the family as sitting ideal and whiling time was against his nature.

and immitation jewellary

Since he was aware about the activities of VSSM and its interest-free loan program, Dhanabhai approached VSSM’s Mohanbhai with a  request for a loan of Rs. 20,000. He planned to begin a wholesale business of imitation jewellery and cosmetics. The plan was that instead of going tot the city for purchases other retailers from his community would come and buy products from him at wholesale price.

The loan was granted and Dhanabhai began his venture. Everyday around 10 to 12 retailers come to him to make their purchases. He makes a daily profit of Rs. 250 to 300. Until now he has repaid Rs. 13,200 of his loan and has stocked goods worth Rs. 35,000.

Dhanabhai is a happy man. He can stay at home because of his health issues and yet earn and supplement his family income. The support from its donors has enabled VSSM  bring such happiness in lives of  hundreds of  nomadic individuals.

VSSM’s support helps Abbasbhai Meer start his own venture….

VSSM's interest free loan helps Abbasbhai Meer to
start his independent buisness
Abbasbhai Meer and his family stay in the Lakadia village of Kuttch. The family earns their living from cattle grazing, such livelihoods barely allow families to have a  daily meal.. It is  absolute  poverty under which  they survive.  Their houses are nothing more than shanty roofs with no walls to support. VSSM’s Ishawarbhai had been instrumental in enabling this family acquire their fundamental documents  like Voter ID card, Ration Card and likes…

Along with the issue of having a permeant place for building a house the other crucial problem was of earning a decent living. Cattle grazing was not an option Abbasbhai was prepared to pursue for long time. He had seen his fellow community men start business of selling laces and borders after procuring interest free loans from VSSM. Abbasbhai also wished to start-up a  similar venture but did not have enough investment capital. So he came up to VSSM  with a request for a loan of Rs. 20,000 to help him start his own venture of retailing laces and borders.

Abbasbhai Meer and his home...
These families consider VSSM to be their guardian and whenever in need they look up to VSSM for support. Ishwarbhai recommended the proposal to VSSM and the loan was sanctioned. The venture has helped Abbasbhai make decent living. He hopes to gradually expand his business. All we can hope for is he continues to be successful and earn a dignified living without having to depend on others for help…..
